you know we haven't really spoken much about grim joe yet on this channel um you know there's so much to talk about regarding bleach it's story it's characters and i am trying to get through as much as i possibly can and i feel like as far as the ultra popular characters go grimjo is one of the more glaring omissions so i wanted to rectify that today this is not going to be a full-on character analysis that's obviously coming later on down the line and i do have a couple of ideas for grim joe videos in the future for example comparing him to basbee looking at the two resident hot-headed bad guys of their respective massive story arcs and seeing who fulfilled that role better but in this video i wanted to do kind of more of a lighthearted shorter video looking at grim joe's evolution throughout bleach and basically posing you the question does grimjo change at all or does he retain that kind of bad boy hot-headed tough guy persona throughout the entire story of bleach you know is that what he embodies is that everything he is is there more to him than that and does he change at all as the story progresses so that is kind of what i wanted to talk about today but before we kick the video off guys if you haven't subscribed yet make sure to hit that button right now as you are in the perfect place for bleach content like this every single week um so make sure to do that now and give the video a thumbs up as well if you enjoyed it because it really does help the old youtube algorithm if we get the video to a thousand likes that would be amazing and i would really appreciate it and of course if you want to support the channel even further and do so in a slightly different way you can become a member today by hitting the join button down below so you know i don't think i really need to give grim joe any kind of introduction he is one of the most popular characters in the series and really has been since his inception very early on in the iran karak and i'll level with you grim joe has never been one of my favorites you know if i had to pick between the two major espada focused in that arc i was always more of an all-kiara kind of guy um i just found him more interesting than grim joe i preferred his design but there's no denying that grimjoe is a real standout in his own right you know from the shock of blue hair to his crazed expressions he's incredibly memorable for all the right reasons and he really is one of the major reasons bleach's popularity was so elevated during the iran car arc to the point where kubo didn't even kill the guy off like he originally intended grimjoe stuck around where most of spada were killed during that story arc so that's a real testament to his popularity and while like i say i was never the biggest fan of grim joe i didn't mind him and actually some of my earliest most vivid memories as a bleach fan involve grim joe the fight the initial first battle between him and ichigo in the anime sticks out to me so much and will forever be ingrained in my memory the music emergence of the haunted playing as he fights ichigo and ichigo is just so overwhelmed by this terrifying new villain a kind of villain we had just hadn't seen before in the soul society arc renji kind of fills the role of the brash hot-headed tempered rival character to ichigo but grimjoe does it with such murderous malice you know he has such a killer intent but none of really the soul society characters had before because obviously now kubo was unrestrained these guys could be villains through and through and grim joe really embodies that really well and he's very much the enforcer of the iran cars early on he's the muscle guy who goes down there and beats up the good guys and shows them you know you are actually slightly out of your league and i did really appreciate that and that initial fight has forever stuck with me as one of my earliest bleach memories and so yeah looking at grim joe's evolution through the story there is no better place to start than at the beginning and he does kind of show up and i think he is definitely at his most murderous his most crazed early on in the iran karak he does seem to be like a dog on a leash who eisen sometimes releases or sometimes he'll break out of his own accord and that's obviously what he does when he assaults karakura town with his fraction all of this sort of thing is the kind of thing i want to get into more detail probably in a grim joe specific analysis but here he very much does his own thing and i think that grim joe one of the defining aspects of his character is his hatred for the establishment you know he really hates being controlled he hates this feeling of someone looking down on him a huge part of his motivation for wanting to face off against ichigo is ichigo's eyes and the way he thinks that ichigo looks down on him um and this whole almost like king complex grim joe has really yeah eeks through to this idea that he hates the establishment and that's very much where he's at you know he's part of wacom and though he's part of eisen's iran car army whether he likes it or not essentially at this point um and you know even though he is a part of eisen's army he's not necessarily going to always pretend that he's super happy with it you know he's openly defiant nearly all the time this puts him on the uh on a on a bad relationship with characters like tozen who obviously uh cherish order over chaos and grim joe really is chaos over order so at the very start of his tenure in the story grim joe immediately breaks out into an argument with characters like ulqra and yami about the fact that they failed to kill ichigo during their initial mission to karakura and so grimjo basically takes his own squad of iran car going over eisen's head and attacks karakura himself in a brazen display of going against the rules and eisen himself of course you know we've talked about tozen and alkiora they're both both those kind of characters are stoic statuesque beings who do value order over chaos and eisen's an interesting mix of the two eisen on the surface um professes to love order you know he loves order he's all about making sure everyone has their tea on time while he enacts his villainous schemings but undeniably behind the curtain eisen loves chaos as long as he is the one orchestrating it um so even though grim joe goes off the chain you know numerous times this is not something that eisen necessarily condones inwardly anyway and it's a really interesting dynamic seeing grim joe going against the grain um in the way he does but obviously his first meeting with ichigo is pretty incredible like i said already it's really stuck with me ever since seeing it um grim joe is brutal unflinching and we don't even see any of his power he doesn't even draw his arm toe in that first fight you know he's about to use it and then tosin arrives um and this is grim joe at his purist this first battle in karakura town this is him completely crazy in the manga you know you get multiple close-up shots of his face with just this wide maniacal uh grin um and you know i think this is probably the grim joe that most people fell in love with before we got a chance to find out more about him just this initial first impression is very powerful and so regarding grim joe's evolution through bleach this first touch point with the character is everything we have to measure him against moving forwards this is the bar that has been set and in my opinion grim joe's evolution is subtle but definitely there if i were to ask you the question i posed at the start of this video does grim joe change throughout bleach my answer would be yes but not entirely a lot of his character retains its personality and its standout traits but he himself does definitely change with the flow so grimjoe as i said already he starts out as this manic anti-establishment guy who just wants to prove his own strength crush those beneath him who he believes look down on him um and you get this idea that he is just this bloodthirsty warrior to begin with he then gets humbled pretty hard when tozen cuts off his arm and obliterates it again this is eisen relishing chaos at his fingertips you know eisen knew as gene points out later that tozen would react incredibly negatively to grimjo coming back and not really suffering any punishment and it's just eyes in creating all these crazy uh situations of descent and grim joe does become a changed man in my opinion after losing his arm he retains that dislike this distrust for the establishment he that he always has and this this distaste he has for authority but he's slightly more quieter about it i think he's definitely more reserved you know the next time he meets ichigo he seems slightly more off balance of course he is caught off balanced by ichigo's incredibly accelerated um you know training he's now got a hollow mask and all this sort of thing really throws grimjo off in their next fight and it's i think it's a good fight i think it's eye-opening it shows you already how their relationship is changing you know in the initial battle when grim joe invades karakura town there's very little talk um and it basically grim joe attacks rukia almost out of the blue and then he fights ichigo and there's very little discourse between the two of them but here this fight starts out more traditionally with a little bit of back and forth between them ichigo even asks him what happened to your arm and grimjo not wanting to show weakness says that he himself discards it because he doesn't need it to defeat ichigo but obviously that's a lie um and i wonder if he could probably suspect it was a lie as well but it's an interesting little back and forth between these two characters that really shows already how their dynamic is evolving and in some ways it's becoming this dynamic of mutual respect now obviously they don't like each other at all they you know ichigo hates grim joe grim joe's dangerous um he's hurt his friends before in the past and grim joe is starting to see ichigo as an unwanted equal i would say because grimshaw obviously wants to be king that's what his entire backstory is about um but ichigo is pushing him pushing him to his limits and in this fight grim joe does actually use his sword grim joe's resurrection pantera is really teased by kubo and it takes ages to finally get there he's about to release his zan puck toe here but then ulchiora stops him at the very end of their fight and obviously grim joe gets humbled even further during this battle not only does ichigo kick his ass before his mask breaks but shinji shows up and then customarily does the exact same thing again so grim joe gets pretty badly tossed around here what's also really cool about grim joe is that he has this kind of primitive way of looking at fighting maybe even more so than characters like ken patchy like i love the way when ichigo successfully strikes him with a get scooter at the end of their first battle it creates a horrible burn on grim joe's chest and he keeps that as like almost like a reminder that ichigo is the one who damaged him in that way um i think that's that's a pretty interesting little character trait of grim joe's um and it kind of in my opinion feeds into this almost like this honor system that grim joe has that you really see more during their next encounter um but i think grim joe comes to view ichigo and his friends in a slightly different way when things start getting shaken up in way comundo obviously lupi being appointed the sixth spader once grim joe has been demoted is a huge blow to his ego and it's eisen again sowing discord between his um subordinates and eventually when grim joe is reinstated into that role and he kills lupe it's thanks to orihime that he's able to do that he then goes and saves orahime from lowly and men only and this kind of shows you again this is a very different guy in many ways to the same guy who stabbed rukia the moment he saw her and made like disparaging remarks about her and tossed her body on the floor and stuff like that this is already a very different guy even if only slightly even if on the surface he's still brash and abrasive and rude and kicking people around and stuff like that he does have some kind of an honor code no matter how twisted it may be and it's interesting because i kind of get the impression grim joe is obviously the antithesis to cure in almost every single way kiara truly wants to be this emotionless statue you know robotic killer essentially who just exists because he exists whereas grim joe embodies many more human attributes of you know anger and jealousy and feeling uh you know insufficient in comparison to other people and feeling that people look down on him but also grim joe embodies certain codes of honor you know you know repaying a debt that sort of thing that's that's quite not particularly hollow-like and of course the iran car arc in general going deeper and deeper into last not chess is all about analyzing and understanding what it truly means to be a hollow and what it truly means to be a human in comparison to that that's a big point of the ichigo vs alkyora fight is what does it mean to be a hollow and what does it mean to be a human but i also think grimjoe is included in that because i think kubo wants us to initially see grimjo as this vessel for the animalistic drive that hollows have and then actually you see once that gets chipped away a little bit he gets humbled by a couple of scenarios there is good good in grim joe putting it very lightly you know he he says that he only saves orihime because she a helped him out and b because he then wants her to do something for him but the key thing is that he did actually save her and by the time grim joe and ichigo have their final showdown in waco mundo he is a very different man to the man we first met you know they have a moment where after ichigo is healed you know although grim joe although grim joe seems like he's going to kind of attack orihime ichigo grabs his arm and there's like no retaliation you know they kind of start fighting a little bit but then grim joe allows ichigo and orihime to talk and then agrees to his request to move the fight away and it's because at this point grimjo really has become completely removed from the establishment and it's this idea of him being a rebel again at this point he's openly for okiyora um locked him away with the negacion and it's like at this point all grim joe cares about is proving to himself and to ichigo that he is stronger than he doesn't care about eyes and doesn't care about the aspardo or anything like that he's become a pariah essentially um that act of saving or ahime killing mentally and hurting lowly and then fighting all kia ora he is at this point doing his own thing and he's become very different because he's become removed from the ideals of the iran car and you see that in the way he acts here the way he grants each of those requests the way he lets them talk to each other all he cares about is the fight as long as the final battle happens doesn't care how they get there um and i think that's that's fascinating it's things i think it's very it is very subtle because grim joe's most pronounced traits are also very overbearing you know he is incredibly rude he's incredibly rebellious you know all of that is the top layer of grimj but you do get this interesting through line of change for the character um and you know ichigo defeats him he uses resurrection pantera and then ichigo defeats him and there's this moment of changing ichigo as well you know when grim joe is basically beaten he's bloodied he can barely stand his resurrection involuntarily leaves his body um each girl basically is like you know stop you know you don't have to carry on like this anymore you know there's like an unspoken thing between them that ichigo is stronger and grim joe although he he hates that he does try and attack ichigo again before he gets wiped by neutra the quiet moments between them are some of the most interesting and then of course after grim joe is taken out by neutral he's literally not seen for ages like i mean ages so like when we were reading it weekly if you were reading it weekly you almost certainly remember grim joe's death was like greatly believed to have been a thing like many people thought grimshaw was probably dead kubo gave a couple of interviews at one point uh almost kind of vaguely saying that grim joe was actually still alive um and kind of we held on to this idea that maybe we'd see him again at some point and we do thousand-year blood war arc he comes in kills kyrgy opie liberates wakamundo from the quincy essentially um and but he's barely seen because kubo spends a lot of time teasing him so you don't really get to see him properly until later on when they invade varvelt and again he's changed even more than he once was he is a different guy he still is as i mentioned before on the surface the same dude like he still wants to attack ichigo he still wants to fight ichigo he's all about proving his strength to those around him when nell says to him you know you need to keep quiet because you're six and i'm three grim joe's like eisen's not around anymore those numbers don't mean anything and if we fight right now i will show you that you're wrong and he's preparing to fight just about everyone um so on the surface he's still the same but it's really surreal seeing grim joe sitting there just chilling out in yukio's box next to ichigo and it goes like so why'd you swap sides again and grim joe's like well i haven't swapped sides but if this uh guy gets what he wants and waka mundo's destroyed i won't have anywhere to to fight you and you know that small smile of ichigo's is like a thinly veiled i get what you're saying but i appreciate the help you know and it's like it's very unspoken between the two of them uh and i i think ichigo and grim joe have this great rivalry between them it's a it is a good relationship and i kind of wish that cooper had brought grimshaw back a little bit earlier so that we could capitalize on that but grim joe himself does seem more mature now the post time skip look his new clothes and everything reflect that he has at least changed somewhat you know the physical changes reflect the slight changes with him um but grim joe is in many ways still the same guy then there's no getting around that he leaps asking without even thinking and giving it a second thought um but he is again shown willing to cooperate with kisuke in one of the most fascinating partnerships we actually get out of the thousand-year blood war you know you've heard me say it a million times one of my favorite things about the final arc is the way it brings together so many different characters from so many different races partnerships and pairings you never expected to see and urahara and grim joe is up there but it's awesome and i wish we've got more of it um but they work together to defeat asking you know this incredibly dangerous opponent who is you know fighting on even ground with ki skates bankai only gets defeated because kisuke thinks ahead and actually enlists grim joe and grimgo comes through for him so yeah i think grim joe does change and i think it's subtle but i think it's it's definitely there the major changes happen in the sort between around the second fight with him and ichigo in the third fight that's all the kind of big development for grim joe he definitely becomes a bit more mature we see that in a thousand year blood war arc that even grim joe who was supposed to embody hollow's desire to destroy and to devour can put that all aside to you know come together and face the bigger evil which i really like and unfortunately grim joe's fate in the the manga is the same as kisukes and yoroichis he disappears after asking uses gift ball deluxe to bring them all to their knees uh poisoning heavily implied nellie l rescues him and then of course in kant for your own world um we know that grim joe is still alive he's featured fairly heavily in that story and although i haven't read the whole thing yet i've read enough to see that that change is still there it's really cool and weird seeing grimjo act as like almost like a diplomat um at the end of the war i love seeing him there without harabel and neliel talking to serious bigwigs in the soul society ichibe and shin sweet i think that's really cool stuff um and you know grim joe's involved in a lot of fights and can't for your own world i'm looking forward to i've seen a lot of people asking about a review for this it's definitely coming i'm making my way through i haven't read the whole thing yet um but i love seeing this changing grim joe and i think it's really cool that kubo did keep him alive in the end like i said never one of my favorite characters but i i love seeing villains survive in bleach and i think it's something he should have done more asking um but yeah grim joe it's great to see him still around and that change is definitely evident in him and i think he does become more subdued overall but what made people fall in love with grim joe in the first place is still there um in the character and i think that's awesome to see but that's pretty much it for this video on grim joe's evolution through bleach i hope you enjoyed it let me know in the comments below guys whether you think grim joe changed at all during bleach's storyline or if he remained the same guy that he was from the start of the iran car arc like i said i think he has changed i think it's very subtle he's become more subdued um but what we know and love about grim joe remains on the surface all right guys but if you haven't subscribed yet already make sure to do that now become a channel member to support me even further i really appreciate it until next time i'll catch you later see you then
