in this video we're going to look at the basics of using fusion within DaVinci Resolve 16 to create an animated title the video clip for today's tutorial come from pixels comm if you go over to pixels comm and click on the free videos under the explore menu there are a heap of free videos you can download to help you build up your skills and resolve today's video is called a rocky coast by Tom Fisk so if we switch over to resolve we have an empty project so we can drag in our video clip now as you can see it's a 4k clip at frame rate of 29.97 frames per second so if we drag the video onto our timeline to create a new timeline now this video goes for about 36 seconds for our demo today we don't really need it to be that long so we'll cut it down to about 10 seconds to cut this clip we can just press control B select that extraneous content and hit backspace to remove now what we want to do is we want to have a title flash up in about the middle of the clip so what we want to do is we'll come to about the two second mark and we'll cut again and we want our animated title to be about four seconds long so we'll go to the six second mark control B again to cut now the reason why we're cutting our footage like this is that we want to have our fusion title on this single clip when we get into the fusion editor we're only working within the frames within this specific clip and we don't have to worry about all the frames outside of this clip so if we just click to the start of this clip right click on the clip say new fusion clip and you can see we get these little stars at the end of the clip which show that it's a fusion clip we can now click over the fusion tab and start working Fusion is based around building up nodes and each node contains a different piece of information about the animation of each fusion title we'll always have two items one being a media in which if we click on the little left icon in the two dots at the bottom of the media in that will display on the left window and you can see the media out is selected on the right window what we can use these windows for is to display different parts of the animation as we go through so we'll look at that in more detail as we add more information now always like to press f2 to rename these so we know what they are this is our background clip and this is our output now with our background clip selected we want to click on the text plus icon in the menu above it will create a text node which will contain the text that we want for our title and it will create a merge node which merges the content of the text with the background clip and if we hover over we can see the merge 1 dot background setting is linked to the background clip and the merge one dot for ground is linked to the text 1 clip this means that the text will show over the top of the background clip because the background clip is in the background the text is in the foreground so if we were to just go over to our styled text and add in the text that we want to add a rocky coast which is the name of this video now what you can see is because we have the background clip selected in the left viewport we don't see our text that's because the text doesn't merge with the background clip until we get to merge 1 if we were to select the icon on merge 1 we would see both if we were to just select the left icon on text we would just see the text output on the left window rather than the full output as we see on the right window the other way we can change these displays is by dragging the node up to the window and you'll see it marks the left view window so we'll start with just adding the text there for now so we can see what we're working with and we can see the final output on the right window so now we've got our text we can look at aligning the text to where we want it within the clip if we wanted to show the text side down in this bottom left hand corner we can move it down like that you saw me add in the text earlier but we can change all the different settings we can change the font so we'll pick say Paris I think looks quite good we can change the size some fonts have different settings as to whether they can be regular bold this font only has the regular so we've got our title in our bottom left-hand corner now as you can see just below the viewports is the list of frames because we've selected a four second piece of footage and it's at 29.97 or 30 frames per second we actually have 120 frames to work with which we can see up here in our global in-and-out so the little red line here shows what frame were on so as we click along we go to different frames so if we go back to the star and we just press play we can see that the video clip is playing and that our title is showing up now we have loop enabled so it'll just continue playing for as long as we're playing it so we can either press stop or press the spacebar to stop the playback and we can turn the loop on and off just by clicking on it so now what we want to do with this title is not have it show the full length of the clip to animating over the course of the clip and then dissolve out at the end of the clip so there's a number of different settings you can use for animating text you can use tracking to spread text in and out you can use size you can do the right arm and right off effect but for this example we're going to go over to the shading tab and we're going to use the opacity and we're going to just bring the opacity up to bring the title onto the screen and then fade it back away again so what we want to do is we use a mechanism called keyframes to set the changes in each step of the process we go over to our first keyframe come over to our opacity click on this little white button which sets a keyframe we want to set the opacity value that we want at this keyframe so we want it to be zero we need to decide at which point along the clip we want the title to be fully displayed so let's say we go to keyframe 40 and we want the title to easing up to frame 40 stay there until frame 80 and then dissolve away through to the end of the clip so we move our playhead to frame 40 we can add another keyframe by clicking on the white diamond we move our opacity up to 1 which brings our title back to view we can then move to frame 80 what we want to do is between 540 and brain 80 we want the title to be visible on the screen and nothing to change so frame 80 we just want to add another keyframe because nothing's going to change in that opacity value between 3 and 40 and Graham 80 so the next thing we want to do is go right to the end we don't want to go to the very last frame because that's actually the first frame of the next clip we want to go to our last frame which is 1 1 9 and add another keyframe and drop our opacity back down to 0 if we move our red playhead back to 0 and click on the start button or press the spacebar you can see our title becomes visible and then stops being visible again if we play that again it slowly comes in and then it dissolves away again if you want to change the speed of the animation or change the keyframes there's a couple of different ways to do it now we can click on the keyframes button to view our keyframes to move the nodes around we have a couple of different options we can hold the mouse middle mouse button down and move around we can hold the control button down and use the mouse scroll wheel to make them make the node smaller and we can move them around gives us an opportunity to move our keyframes window across we can click on the three little ellipses here and select show only selected tools and then if we select our text item and expand out we can see our opacity and it's a bit hard to see here so we can click on this zoom to fit and we can see our keyframes so as we said we had a keyframe at frame zero a keyframe at 40 a keyframe at 80 and a keyframe at one one nine okay so with the node name selected we can actually click on these or we can hover over and click on these keyframes and actually move them if we wanted to move all the values we can click on the actual item so clicking on opacity means we can move it either way either forwards or backwards on the whole timeline if we select text one we can actually hover over each node and move them accordingly or each keyframe and move them accordingly the next thing we can do is if we turn off keyframes and go into the spline editor extend this out click on opacity we also see these points represent our keyframes and we can see that the opacity changes from zero to one stays at one and then drops from one down to zero these are very abrupt changes so it goes in a linear fashion up to one then it stays on one and it moves on a linear fashion down so what we can do is if we control and scroll with our mouse wheel we can select each item press the F button and this actually rounds out so we get more of a smoother transition through the visibility of the title so if we play we can see it eases in and then it eases out so if we click back to our edit tab now move to an earlier part in the clip spacebar to start playing what you may notice is that you'll see this red bar along the top which changes to blue this is the Machine rendering the fusion clip behind the scenes so until it goes blue your rendering may be a little bit choppy so once it's blue we can play this and you can see title comes on and disappears again that's the basics of creating a fusion title in DaVinci Resolve 16 thanks for watching
