of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all my brothers and sisters we gather as a family we enter into the desert with jesus we remain with him as he continues to teach us how to restrain ourselves from sin and temptation and give ourselves as he did to the father we come together we gather together as family and as family we welcome all those who gather with us this morning brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words and what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life lord have mercy receive christ have mercy right mercy lord have mercy [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and everyone [Music] [Applause] a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramaian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us impar imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] [Applause] be with me lord be with me lord when i am in trouble and needs me [Music] you dwell in the shelter of god most high say to the lord my refuge my stronghold my guard in who my trust [Music] evil shall never be for you nor affliction come near to your tent [Music] unto his angels he's given a command to guard you in all your ways be with me lord when i [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame [Music] for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] lord jesus [Music] one does not live on [Music] of god is [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you lord filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they shall support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord [Music] we are asked today to consider the nearness of god the closeness of god we hear scripture says that the word is on our lips and the word is in our heart and this is the closeness in the intimacy of god that even when we're about to receive this word on our lips and in our heart we make the sign of the cross may this word be on our minds may this word be on our lips may this word be in our heart this is the nearness of god his closeness he desires to be on our thoughts always he wants to be in our mind he wants to be on our lips that we may profess and proclaim his goodness to others so that others might be drawn closer to him and in knowing him we will come to know who we are we are god's beloved children and everything that he does is for us today we see jesus doing something for us something that we benefit from greatly because he allowed himself to be baptized and received a baptism of repentance he did that for you he did that for me he allowed the holy spirit to anoint him so that he can be covered in the glorious freedom of the children of god he did that for us and today jesus allows himself to be led by the spirit into the desert see the father's love for you that he would allow his son to be tempted so that jesus who doesn't understand temptation would allow to himself to be tempted for us so that he can teach us how to renounce sin and satan and all his empty promises so that we can continue to be covered in the glorious freedom of the children of god jesus is showing us what it means to be covered in god he assumes a yoke for us comes into our humanity into our sinfulness into our darkness he is covered in our humanity this is a cloak of slavery of sin but he wants us to take off this cloak this cloak of slavery and sin this yoke this burden that gives us death and he wants us to be covered in him and that glorious freedom of god that when we were baptized we were covered in christ we were covered in glory in the glorious freedom of god but throughout life we exchange this cloak and we allow the enemy to give us his cloak and he loves to show us how beautiful it looks how glorious this cloak is he wants us to take off freedom and put on slavery that is the people of israel that when the lord set them free when he gave them freedom they continued to chose and choose idol worship they continued to choose slavery they wanted to go back to egypt and allow another master to continue to press them and oppress them jesus is saying no he goes into the desert to say no the people of israel chose slavery and sin rather than the glorious freedom of the children of god jesus goes back into the desert for you for me to be tempted to show us what freedom looks like today the enemy tempts him as he always tempts us what does he want us to do well he knows our weakness jesus is hungry jesus has been praying and he figures when we're praying when we're fasting so that we can draw closer to god this is when he comes to tempt us he's annoying he wants to distract us he's noisy he wants his voice to be heard over the voice the beautiful voice of the father saying i love you you belong to me and so he wants jesus to use his own power he wants jesus to be independent he wants jesus to rely on himself rather than to rely on god we are dependent on god we are his children and that is glorious for us because the father always provides for all that we need and so jesus renounces that by reminding us that we live on the word of god we feast on scripture that we don't need to live on only the things of this world but we have a higher calling we are spiritual beings we allow the father to provide for all our needs and then he wants him to put on this cloak of slavery see all this look at all that i can give you lie lie lie look at all the kingdoms that have been given to me and i'm the only one that can give it to you lie lie lie the father says everything that is his is ours it belongs to us we have inherited we are the glorious children of god and we have inherited his kingdom no one can take that away from us and no one can give it to us only god can give it to us and we're the only ones that can give it away he wants jesus to put a cloak on yes look at all this that i can give you but it's a disguise and this is what we cannot allow the glorious freedom to be taken away from us and receive this cloak because under this cloak it looks good on the outside remember he is cunning he is deceptive but on the inside there's chains on the inside there's slavery on the inside he wants us to be drawn to him to be often to be without the father and we say no to that because we are the children of god we serve god and god only we have a master but our master is meek and humble of heart our master is the master teacher it's jesus and he says learn from me because my yoke is easy and my burden is light put on my yoke and not the yoke of slavery put on the yoke of freedom and finally the enemy wants us to question god questions on themselves are not bad questions are good we should be able to ask god god father what do you want me to do with all these gifts that you have given me father how do you want me to serve you father what ministry are you calling me to father what is the vocation that you chose for me questions like that are good but when we begin to question god god where are you who are you why aren't you here why aren't you helping me where were you when this happened and that happened the enemy wants us to test god to question god and children do not do that to their parents children are obedient we listen to what our father has to say to us we never test him we do what he asks us to do why because he's trustworthy and everything that he's done for all has been done for you and he has done it for me as we enter into the desert of this season as we want to fast from the things of this world as we want to draw closer to god who's already drawn closer to us he wants to teach us through his son how to pray how to hear his voice how to allow him to supply for all our needs he does not want us to test him because testing for us shows that we are weak that we are vulnerable to the enemy instead we are obedient of faith meaning we freely in the glorious freedom of god and the glorious freedom of the children of god give ourselves freely to god as jesus did remember jesus is not in the desert for himself he's in the desert for you and he's in the desert for me everything he says and does is for us because we are truly the children of god let us learn from jesus who's meek and humble of heart and not give up this beautiful cloak that god has given us it's a cloak of freedom it's a cloak of freedom let's not let the enemy dupe us into a cloak of slavery and sin our loving father has given us the profession of faith so that in confidence as one voice and one family in confidence we can profess what we believe i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from life true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen together let us bring our deepest desires to god our heavenly father and ask him for what we truly need during this season in confidence we pray for all members of the church during this season of lent that they be examples of faithful service we sing to the lord [Music] for the leaders of all nations that they make a serious commitment to peace and justice among all people and in a special way for the people of the ukraine we sing to the lord [Music] for our parish family that during this lenten season we can me may we and compassion in the presence of christ especially jim weston we sing to the lord [Music] and for the recently deceased margaret bogdan ron harmon catherine doyle lourdes astia jesus verde floor luis freely martin leshi paul fratto we sing to the lord [Music] for our own private intentions which we speak now in the silence of our hearts and for the people of our parish we sing to the lord [Music] heavenly father you open our mind our lips and our hearts to true deep conversion and your loving grace we beg you to listen to our prayer and grant what we ask in accordance through your divine will we ask this through christ our lord [Music] oh [Music] come on is [Music] i will praise him [Music] up [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] pray brethren that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father give us the right dispositions oh lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord be with you r [Applause] [Music] let us give thanks to the lord our god [Music] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feasts and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim oh [Music] oh is [Music] so you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of its death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and john our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god the blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the angels and saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through christ our lord through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] [Applause] me [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say [Music] thy will be come on earth as it is [Applause] [Music] us as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into [Music] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever [Music] the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer one another a sign of peace is [Music] peace [Music] watching behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am [Music] every word that comes forth from the mouth of god [Music] now [Music] bring me to my knees lord i lay me down rip me of myself i belong to you oh lead me lead me to the crowd [Music] to your heart to your heart to your heart [Music] your blood poured out bring me to my knees lord i lay me down bring me on myself i belong to you oh leave me lead me to the cross [Music] so [Music] the great unknown where feet may fail [Music] my faith will stand [Music] when oceans rise [Music] your sovereign hand will be my god my feet may fail and fear surrounds me you've never failed and you won't start now [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] ocean [Music] but i am yours spirit lead me where my trust is [Music] me deeper than my feet could ever wander and [Music] and keep my eyes above the waves rise my soul [Applause] [Music] and you are mine [Music] yes yes let us take a moment in eucharistic love and realize what jesus has done for all of us his word is truly in our heart and on our lips for we have just tasted his goodness and his goodness resides in us he is the breath that breathes life inside of us he is the one at this moment touching all our wounds already bringing healing and promoting grace this is the nearness of god he's so close to us that he's inside of us desiring nothing more than holy communion with us let us pray renewed now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthen we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which proceeds from his mouth through christ our lord as we enter into this first full week of lent reminding that god is drawing us closer to him let us just take a moment to realize how he draws closer through the gift of these angels who have been singing for us and leading us in song so as our lord draws us in prayer this week please we ask you to take a bulletin home with you or giving him our hearts and allowing him to hear our confession and to grant us his pardon and peace also as we continue to pray for the people of the ukraine many of you have asked about support to them and so in union and with all the united states conference of catholic bishops and all the churches throughout the states we are taking up a collection and so there's several ways that you can do that we have um special blue envelopes and the narthex and then there you can mark special collection on that and let us know that that's for the ukraine also in the envelope packets that you received at home for march there's an envelope that's labeled for the churches in central and eastern europe that is the envelope that we'll use to assist the people of the ukraine as we continue to pray for peace in that region but you can also do that online when you go online for those who are on online giving you can go to the month of march and you will see in there that it has for the churches of central and eastern europe and that would be the collection that we'll use for the people of ukraine we continue to keep them in our hearts we continue to pray for peace in that region and throughout the world as always thank you for your prayers finally thank you for the way that you continue to support our catholic appeal and the ministries here in our own diocese and all the ways that we
