understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priests shall take the pania from your hand and lay it before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering aramaian he went down into egypt to find refuge there few in numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand an outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the produce of the soil that you the lord have given me you must then lay them before the lord your god and bow down in the sight of the lord your god the word of the be to lord [Music] be with my me [Music] be with me lord in my distress he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and the bites in the shade of the almighty [Music] says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust [Music] upon you no evil shall fall [Music] no plague approach where you dwell for you has he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways [Music] they shall pay you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against the stone on the lion and the viper you will trust and trample the young lion and the dragon be with me by his first his love he set on me so i will rescue him protect him for he knows my name when he calls i shall answer i am with you i will save him in distress and give him glory [Music] be with [Music] me a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] king of eternal glory priest the king of eternal glory and dost not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of god [Music] [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit this proclamation taken from the holy gospel according to sin luke glory to you o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this stone to turn into a loaf but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i will give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall all be yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the good news the gospel of the lord praise to you lord lord jesus christ you must have heard of the monkey trap have you heard of the monkey trap it's a well-known trap used by hunters to catch monkeys what they do is they make a hole just big enough for the monkey to put its hand in the coconut then they put some kind of bait their favorite food i heard green bananas and they cut them up and they put them into the coconut then they tie the coconut up in the tree what they find is that the greed of the monkey will always stick its hand into the coconut to grab the bananas or whatever is the bait but with a clenched fish it can't get its hand out when the hunter approaches the monkey panics it tries harder and harder to pull the fruit out it can't and eventually it is captured all the monkey had to do was to open its hand to let go and it was free but this obsession this possession of that fruit keeps the hand the fists clench and it eventually causes the monkey it's like it's freedom silly monkey right hmm silly me i'm that monkey so often what's my coconut what's yours today's gospel tells us what our coconuts are we have marked ourselves with ashes on wednesday to prepare ourselves to celebrate the great feasts of easter a special time of recalling the gift of our baptism and our freedom to live as god's children today in this first sunday of lent the narrative the gospel narrative points to the three ways in which we often trap ourselves being lured to the coconut's promising satisfaction success and domination it invites me lures me with false desires with traps i want i want i want i must have i must have i must have and eventually my fist grabs my hand is inside the coconut and eventually i'm trapped because i find it very hard to let go it's an insidious logic isn't it that first temptation so natural i'm hungry so legitimate after 40 days of hunger one needs to survive one needs food and so i begin insidiously to say this is what i need and eventually that need grows into a greater need and a greater need and eventually it becomes i want when i'm tempted i find i do not eat to live i live to eat and this eating becomes my purpose and meaning in life to satisfy my cravings it possesses me how insidiously it works and very soon it's not food it's everything that first works with i need to eventually begin to possess me perhaps less insidious but more deadly is my vain glory my sense of importance my need to possess control and dominate i mean i have friends who are influences and sometimes they work themselves to death to try to gain more followers and more followers and it's never enough it seems that there's nothing about the content anymore it's just what grabs the headlines what will get more eyeballs and eventually all that drives me is to reach to the top to dominate when instead i'm called to be humus to be soiled to be humble the reference is not me the reference is god but how often my grades my possessions my status becomes that vain glory and this eventually brings us to the parapet of the temple and then the parapet of temple i begin to temp god i begin to serve like say i will use my god and manipulate him i will test him i am his beloved let him prove that i am i'm blessed he will surely save me and so my life moves from just what i need to survive to eventually the focus on myself and eventually i become the tempter temptations will always be part of our lives no matter our age or circumstances in life len provides us with that season to discipline ourselves to see things as they are yours traps that can eventually steal my life to examine what my fist is clenched with what is it that i'm holding on to and i can't let go anger pride maybe even sloth and eventually with the grace of god and of the season to let go to save my life let us not be depressed discouraged or nervous but humble enough to know that this is a season of grace given to you and me to allow myself to move from being in the middle where every reference is about my wants and my desires and my addictions but to allow that center to be god's word god's love god's forgiveness and mercy perhaps an expression that dramatically comes home for me about our excessive consumption was when i read in the news that 470 billion plastic bottles are used just for one single purpose 470 billion plastic bottles are floating in the river choking our wildlife destroying our planet who's consuming them me it's never enough the harmony between creator humanity and creation is disrupted by our presuming to take the place of god and refusing to acknowledge our limitations and what is enough when we act out of greed at the lack of respect by grabbing and possessing by excessive satisfaction and consumption for self for my own comfort we damage our relationship with god jesus in the desert invites us to unite with him and to see that our dependence is on god as the source destination of our lives that slowly allows me to let go and get my hand out of that monkey trap let us together take this season enter into it participate into it and find our freedom to love i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered and the pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen heavenly father hear our cries to you for help during this lent as we present our needs and those of the world for the catholic church that we be strengthened to live lives marked by humility and love we pray to the lord lord hear our world to live in we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer loving father grant us our prayers that we be like jesus in the desert placing his full trust in his father we ask this through our lord jesus christ amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for this through your goodness that we have this bread and wine to offer fruit of the earth fruit of the vine work of human hands it will become for us our spiritual food and drink bless be god forever pray my sisters my brothers pray that what you bring in this offering the prayers you pray the sacrifices you make pray that your offering and mine here may be acceptable to god our almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and for the good of all his holy church give us the right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord then let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feasts and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hopes heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus the christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks he broke it he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence minister to you humbly we pray that partaking in the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world in the violence of
