conversion renewal and purification as we seek by god's grace to grow in faith hope and charity as we gather on this the first sunday of lent we hear how jesus himself was tempted by the devil in the desert he overcame those temptations which gives us the courage and the fortitude to seek by grace to overcome our own temptations as we gather we are very mindful of all that is taking place in our world in particular in ukraine and we hold the people of ukraine in our prayers praying to god that peace may once again reign in the hearts of all people [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] there [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] so a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priest shall take the pania from your hand and laid before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering armenian he went down into egypt to find refuge there viewing numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on this but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand and outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he bought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the produce of the soil that you lord have given me you must they then lay them before the lord your god and bow down in the sight of the lord your god the word the lord so [Music] so [Music] ah [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] yes [Music] ah [Music] foreign [Music] me [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask for his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] oh foreign [Music] foreign [Music] oh [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this stone to turn into a loaf but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall all be yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against the stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord so the season of lent is a time for renewal a time for being refreshed in the spirit a time to be at peace on ash wednesday we received on our heads the ashes burnt palms from last year's palm sunday procession and this marked for us this year the beginning of that journey of lent towards easter but of course it is also the continuation of an ongoing journey that began on the day of our baptism our christian journey through the tests which modern society subjects us to are many and affect both our personal and communal lives when we allow the holy spirit to guide us through those tests through those temptations then we can overcome we find the strength to face them just as we heard in the gospel that jesus who faced the temptations in the desert overcame them and so we know that when we face tests and trials and temptations that we do not face them alone because jesus is with us but together we face them as brothers and sisters in the church jesus as we heard in the gospel was tempted but yet did not sin jesus knows what it is to hear those voices tempting us towards power pleasure and glory voices that are too easily accessible via social media the television radio and so on telling us that it is okay to do this or that on our christian journey as disciples of jesus we are called daily to listen to the word of god and to strive to overcome by the grace of god those voices that are tempting us this can be a reality for us you and i both know that by grace there are many times that we do turn away from temptation that strength to do so comes from listening to god's word which st paul in our second reading today reminds us that is very near to us as he writes it is on your lips and in your heart it is that word that we are called to live out in action it is having a hunger and thirst for what is true and just ultimately it is to recognize our hunger and thirst for god during lent we are reminded of that call to conversion an invitation that we will hear day after day in these 40 days but what does it mean quite simply following christ so that his gospel is a real guide for our life it means allowing god to transform us through our prayer our fasting and arms giving we keep that desire that hunger and thirst for god at the forefront of all that we do and say striving to keep our eyes firmly fixed on the one who reveals to us the god of love and mercy namely jesus our savior to respond in faith to the call to conversion moment after moment day after day is by god's grace the renewing of the choice to be a christian to give god first place our mission as disciples of jesus is as we are fully aware to tell others of god's love and mercy for all people but this remember requires us to fix our gaze on jesus ourselves so that we experience that love and mercy firsthand and then we go and share that with others and so as we have embarked on this year's lenten journey let us ask for the strength to persevere to be patient and not to be afraid let us keep our eyes our minds our hearts firmly fixed on gazing at the face of love the face of jesus and let us ask our heavenly mother mary during these weeks of lent to help us moment by moment to make that choice to be a christian to give god first place with confidence and with ever greater joy it will bring us yes to the celebration of easter with renewed faith and hope and charity and we pray that also it will bring us one day to the fullness of life and joy in god's presence in heaven um [Music] oh [Music] yes [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] ah
