my name's Tyler Mike Smits and this is essential reasons so um life is difficult this is just life is difficult um one of my favorite books that I'd never read I read the first line of the first chapter of this book called the road less traveled by M Scott Peck and it opens up with this line three words life is difficult and I remember reading it going like yeah that's true that's true and I think the sooner we accept that the the easier things are for us now well that's not what this videos about there's gonna be another video about that later on but I want to look at like what's our response to that reality what's that response to that truth what's our response to life's difficulties because I can't control how difficult life will be I can't control difficult life will be for me I often can't control how difficult life will be for the other people I mean we keep we have a certain influence right we can make we can make smart decisions we can make unhhhh smart decisions some people call that wise in foolish but whatever they're people who like use big words anyways um I can't come I'm not in complete control over life's difficulties or over life but I am I can very much control or at least I have a high degree of influence over how I respond to the difficulties of life because here's what we need to know here's what I think I just want to say I need to say you probably experienced things in your life that have been tragic you probably experienced things in your life that have been like earth-shatteringly difficult like a hundred percent and so of course you have permission to grieve those things you have permission when like life is difficult to be crushed by it in some ways right your permission to be sad you should be frustrated at like your to keep trying and keep trying and things are not going your way your permission to be upset right I mean just I'm saying this because it's very important to establish as a ground level kind of a thing that in the face of life's difficulties it's okay it's okay to be exhausted it's okay to be tired of it it's okay to be frustrated by it it's okay to be grieved by the fact of the difficulties of life but here's one thing you do not have permission to be you did not ever do you don't have permission to feel you don't have permission to be sorry for yourself that's that's what it comes down to you absolutely you absolutely do not as a Catholic Christian you have absolute you absolutely do not have permission to feel sorry for yourself ever ever like it's actually again you can you get you get to feel sad you get to feel grieved you get to feel like you wish things were different you get to feel frustrated all those negative emotions as well as the positive emotions that come with good things but when it comes to us we never ever have permission to feel sorry for ourselves because I mean think about this that what what a what good would just feel sorry feeling sorry for yourself to like grief helps you process grief right like going through the stages of grieving like that helps you process the thing that's happened to you actually letting yourself be sad helps you get through sadness being frustrated sometimes gets you to the point where you move forward so feeling those things they're all they actually a to start off can be helpful the feeling sorry for yourself is never helpful for you or for anyone else and that's very key cuz secondly what about think about this like in in the midst of our pain oftentimes our temptation is to turn in ours on ourselves like to look at this and end to look at our frustration look at our sadness look at our brief gonna think and like turn in ourselves but then we turn background let the idea right if we work through it in turn back around but for someone who just feels sorry for themselves they're turning in on themselves and their whole world shrinks down to the size of themself so I've got this illness I've got this wound I've got this injury I've got this circumstance and now it's all about I it's all about me it's all about this self and while you are worth loving and you're worth feeling sorry for for other people like they're you're worth someone giving pity to you you're we're at baseball and say is you worth caring about maybe I'll say like that you're worth caring about and you're also you can care about yourself obviously but feeling sorry for oneself is to collapse in on oneself be focused on oneself and to like your make the whole universe the size of one self so you don't have permission to do that it doesn't help anything and secondly it reduces everything to just me he's funny I was reading this in Colossians chapter 3 st. Paul's running to the church at Colossae he hasn't been there and and the church there in colossi is if they're going through stuff you know maybe not the worst things that Christians have been through but Paul is actually he's writing to the church and colossi from jail and in no point does he ever say like poor me poor me like I'm a victim here i it's so terrible what's he do he looks at them and says I can help even though he's in jail he's I can't go visit you but I can write you a letter and can encourage you I can call you back to the truth and in fact what he says is you know it's one of those awesome with many awesome lines in Scripture but this is one against Colossians 3 where Jesus or Saint Paul says let the Peace of Christ the Peace of Jesus let the Peace of Christ control your hearts let the Peace of Christ control your hearts like in the midst of all this stuff that your guts got you've got going on let the Peace of Christ control your hearts and then he says and be thankful just really three words kind of like life is difficult he says and be thankful and be thankful what gets you out of self-pity gratitude because it's out of this sense of like I just pour me is thank you he goes on to say he says let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another singing Psalms hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God so hear st. Paul who says they and all these things be thankful and then he says and then turn to each other and help each other encourage you so there are monitors each other build each other up with gratitude one of my favorite quotes of a kind of a poem I don't know if it's a poem it's a saying it's a line I heard in the movie back in the 90s and it was this it was I've never seen a wild thing feel sorry for itself I've seen a small bird drop dead frozen from a bow without ever having felt sorry for itself now I might get that quote a little bit wrong I've never seen a wild thing feel sorry for itself a small bird will drop dead frozen from a bough without having ever felt sorry for itself man I remember I hearing that going like yes yes I mean even though we have tragedies in life even though life is difficult if you'll say yeah but there's never there's no room why because as Christians were called to be wild things like Christians were not called to be domesticated we're not called to be pampered or not called to be merely living in comfort called the wild things wild sons and daughters of our Father who loves us very much and yes life is difficult but what do we do we do what Jesus did in the midst of his passion in the midst of his rejection of his message from others from people in his in his hometown from the authorities in Jerusalem did he ever once give us the impression that he felt sorry for himself not once was he grieved absolutely did he say I could let this cup pass from me please don't let this happen yes but did he once feel sorry for himself no why because I would make this claim I would say that Jesus is the ultimate Wild Thing he's the ultimate God who is also man who has this power and is unwilling to hand his power over to hand his ability to serve over to relinquish his his his his ability to encourage and mana to inspire and save others because he was too preoccupied with his own wounds we do not have permission to feel sorry for ourselves ever you do have permission to be grieved to be sad to be hurt to be frustrated to wish things were otherwise than they are absolutely but you do not have permission to feel sorry for yourself instead look up from yourself look out to the others and ask the question where can I serve where can I praise God about what can I still give God thanks and be like Jesus who in the midst of his agony did not once feel sorry for himself but handed himself over for us all for all of us here at essentia presents my name's bottoming god bless Hey like subscribe smash the like button do all those things and also that movie was GI Jane super embarrassing okay but whenever I mentioned a movie here's the thing I saw that when I was in high school I'm not sure what scenes are in it I'm not sure if it's good or bad all I know is that was a sweet quote and that's all and Demi Moore shaved her head I remember that those are the two things I remember also that the guy who says the quote is Aragorn from Lord of the Rings so there you go I don't know peace
