(Feb 9, 2019) The Message of the Cross (Part 2)

[Music] all right that's where I've been parked for the last 31 days parked right there I don't know how long it's gonna last but I'm just taking one day at a time I spoke to a pastor this week and I said yeah I'm just taking one day at a time you said isn't that a a I said no that's yeshua matthew 6 he spoke that a lot way before they ever spoken I want to tell you a couple of things I want to preempt this I think it's really really important I did not have the opportunity to go to Bible College or seminary I just did not and I want you to know just for your edification that I tried I really did I felt called and I tried I'm not gonna tell you who I met with but some very high-powered people in Florida that were heads of denominations they were very kind I had meetings with them and their take was you you're not called to be a priest for a reverend or rabbi you seem to be very much an evangelist and I was a young guy in the faith and they were I have a lot of respect for people anyway but I definitely had a lot of respect for them and I just thought you know I totally trust your relationship with the Lord okay I'm not called to do that and the doors weren't closed they was slammed shut so I just bowed out gracefully and just helped out with youth and gotten involved in the prison on my own I just went and then it it just multiplied like crazy but I was still good I was still sharing the gospel everywhere and it didn't matter I was okay but then God called me out of the blue to take over Beth Judah the synagogue I was at prior to this there was something happen but it's it's public knowledge and the thing just fell apart and they had nobody it was mja a witch which was all covering and you know it's not like a rabbi can just leave his synagogue and take over another synagogue and it was um it was a powerhouse synagogue really the the leader was the executive director of the mja on the steering committee we had a building which was unheard of we just built a building when this whole thing happened I mean just built the building and we probably had I don't know 80 90 people which believe it or not that is huge for a messianic synagogue and it just fell apart and so the oldest came to me and asked me if I would take over and I don't think I was their choice I'm just being honest and I knew that and I didn't have a problem with that but I was willing to help any way I could however however whether I wanted to help or not I still consulted the Lord because ultimately he has the final say in my life so I said okay thank you very much for this opportunity and I spent the afternoon with the Lord now you have to understand I was a bit confused and this was my confusion if these men of God who I respect and have years in ministry are telling me I'm not called and they asked me for help Lord if you just want me to fill in and help I'm your guy you follow you I want you to understand what I was feeling and I'm sure you can relate maybe so he said no you're called to take over that I've called you to take a bit sir so I said then I don't understand why would the door slam shut he said I slam them shut now I got really confused why would you do that this is what he said to me hand to God he said I wanted a man after my own heart now I know some of you went to Bible College and some of you went to seminary my friends have gone I'm not saying by no stretch of the imagination that going to Bible College of seminaries wrong please do not misquote me for me my tract that was not my tract okay you do getting marinated there's no way around it if you're told your whole life you're stupid and you're not gonna amount to nothing you're gonna be stupid and not amount to nothing I don't read books I only read the Bible I stopped reading books like 20 years ago listen to me everybody online I know there's thousands watching please don't take this the wrong way but if you send me a book I will not read it I won't read it for two reasons and again let me print this I'm not telling you not to read books but whatever book you read you marinate in it if you read a book about grace you're talking grace if you read a book about truth you're talking truth if you read a book about deliverance now all of a sudden it's all deliverance read a book about signs and wonders now all of a sudden Saul signs wonders and I just don't want to be marinated in anything but his book that's what the Lord told me to do that does not mean you shouldn't read books books can be incredibly helpful if you're dealing with a situation but make sure the author is qualitative and they have a wonderful relationship with God I had to learn all this on my own I had no mentor and nobody teaching me so all I had was my Bible I had a concordance you absolutely need to study words you absolutely have to understand the Hebrew and the Greek there is no way around it and I was dependent on the Holy Spirit to teach me now I remember Billy three weeks ago spoke or four weeks ago actually four weeks ago and he made the comment when rabbi Gregg got here he didn't know so much and he's right he said he said but let me give the addendum I thought it was very sweet but Billy's not sweet he's honest he said but in all my years of ministry I've never seen somebody grow from from where he was to where he is am i quoting you okay just want to make sure I'm not missing you the way I did that was spending countless hours countless hours in Lord's presence all day long saying I don't understand what even righteousness means what's sanctification What's in between the gifts in the fruits what am i but didn't you she would say if you ask he'll answer if you seek you will find if you knock doors will be open I had no choice I was forced into corner I had to and I asked and I saw it and I knocked if any of you have played sports you know the coach loves the scrappy kid who's there early stays late and tries his heart out I'm here to tell you God's no different if you want to ease on down the road you're gonna have a peripheral relationship with the Lord but I'm concerned to be marinated in somebody else's theology I don't want you to be marinated in mine with that being said there was something called hermeneutics I'm gonna give you the textbook definition hermeneutics is the branch of theology theology is Theo's logos the study of God's Word that deals with the principles of biblical exegesis I'll give you another textbook definition the science of interpretation especially of the scriptures okay let me give you my definition of exegesis and hermeneutics what is what are the words mean you could not apply the scripture without understanding it the first preaching we have in the Bible was Ezra and Ezra was an expository preacher he didn't tell the people how they can apply the word to make their life better he told them what the word means you have to interpret the Word of God to understand what it's saying way before you apply it now is there too much application today and very little interpretation come on it's rhetorical it's rhetorical most believers don't know the Word of God they just know how to kind of apply it and most of that most of that is dangerous hermeneutics or what are the words mean what does the Bible mean I've told you this many times for the life of me guys I don't know why churches and synagogues and ministries don't teach people how to study the Word of God you hear sermon after sermon and these professionals go to a school to learn right they have th DS they have PhDs they have doctorates and they learned this in school and yet they're not teaching you how to study and understand scripture and you could spend 40 50 years in a pew and really not know how and you might be saying who do you think you are don't you want to learn how to study scripture five principles first principle you have to take the word literally until you realize that it's cent simile or metaphor or mixed metaphor or symbolic but you have to see that symbolism running through the entire Bible okay - is scripture must prove Scripture you cannot make a theology about predestination from one verse in Romans 8 it is poison listen to me it's poison it's not bad interpretation it ends up being a doctrine of demons rabbi that's so strong well if it's not a doctrine of God who is the doctrine of guys there's no third door three you have to reconcile all apparent and I say apparent discrepancies and if you really want against that study there's a guy named Haley who wrote a book they are on 969 of parent discrepancies in your Bible for when it comes to prophecy there's something called the Lord of a reference like the prophecy and Joel that was not fulfilled in acts 2 that was the near prophecy the far prophecy is going to be fulfilled when Yeshua comes back in Israel and five and this is the most important principle I mean the other four don't even come close you can almost mess up the other for a little bit but if this one you don't get right you baked context context it's the part of the written statement before meaning preceding and after meaning following a specific passage because it totally influences it meaning and if you take text meaning the words in the Bible the narrative out of its context it becomes pretext meaning it's a lie how many times are you going to grab a verse out of the Bible and go and talk about it for 40 minutes you know think about it think about how ludicrous that is with no context noting preceding or following how important is it to understand God's Word the utmost for a believer the utmost nothing's more important it's of the highest importance the greatest importance it's paramount rabbi why is it so important understand God's Word well first of all can you imagine being a believer without the word you wouldn't understand how to be saved you would understand how to pray you wouldn't understand what God expects of you you wouldn't understand what you can expect of him you would have no idea of your future as a believer you follow what I'm saying you'd be toast you'd know nothing without the Word of God and yet the canons complete everything you need to know is in there but why is it important because Matthew 12:34 says from the mouth speaks an overflow of the heart guys this isn't just a book this is God's words so if you want to know God's heart you have to know God's words because the words speak from an overflow of the heart the tongue is an index of the heart so how important is it oh now you can read certain stories in the Bible especially in the Old Testament if you want to read about the story about Daniel and the lines then and what I'm sharing with you is is paramount I've seen so many people take scripture out of context it's it it I mean I hear sometimes God saying that's not what it means and you're influenced a whole audience of people who are then influencing other people if you want to read about Daniel in the lion's den easy you go to Daniel 6 it's a complete story you can just yank that chapter out of the Book of Daniel you follow no harm no foul you want to read about the David and Goliath story no problem 1st Samuel 17 read the chapter it's complete you want to read about you schewe feeding the 5,000 no problem John 6 they stand alone but when it comes to Paul's epistles which is the majority of the New Testament and how's this I'll go out on a limb when it comes to any epistle John's three epistles Peters two epistles and all of Paul's epistles all Thessalonians Colossians Ephesians Rome you name it that's the bulk of the New Testament you must read an epistle in their entirety they must be read from start to finish in order to maintain proper context in order to ensure correct interpretation that's why where the arguments come the arguments never come with the Christian in the Messianic Jew it never comes in in the Gospels it's straightforward nobody argues about the Gospels we know what you Xu has said but why is it always Colossians 2 says Galatians 2 says you're taking it totally out of context you don't even know who the letter was written to you don't even know when it was written you don't know what was going on you don't know where Paul was when he wrote it you hear what I'm saying so if you don't know all that information and then you take a verse out of the letter and then develop an argument it's disturbing I didn't learn this from a book it's just me and the Holy Spirit for the last 30 years and I haven't arrived but like I told Bernadette I feel like I understand things for the first time I wish I could do a do-over but I am doing a do-over this is the day the Lord has made I I have no problem with understanding my past I use it as a tool for the present if you dwell on the past you're gonna get buried I have no problem looking to the future but if you dwell on the future you're gonna get buried you know why you're never gonna live in today ever and so many people believe it and none miss it miss today life moves fast guys and if you don't stop a little bit you're gonna miss it you know people tell me all the time I told this to burn kids grow up so fast not mine cuz I spent every day with them teaching them the word taking them to the park I think some of those people say that because it's a blur cuz where were you some I'm not saying listen I get in Phatak out what I'm trying to say is you got today Rabbi my parents lived to be 80 I'm 58 years old chance omelet okay chances are you are hopefully a drunk driver doesn't cross the medium and hit you it was a head-on collision in my neighborhood I live across street in my neighborhood Saturday night max just missed it by this much how do you have a head-on collision in a subdivision unless some is doing this now I don't want anywhere to get hurt but hear me you want to hit a tree knock yourself out don't hit me in my family because you got to tell you dopey friend that you know who I just saw it's neuromuscular if you look down you're body's gonna follow you you can't cross over if you're looking out the window and driving how do you do that I think I just it's not gonna happen to me rabbi famous last words no never happens to us having said the other guy so we're going to read and study I don't know how long it's gonna take because I'm not on a time constraint the Holy Spirit will tell me enough and I'll stop if we get it done we get done if not so many people do drive-bys with the Word of God it's way too precious to do a drive-by if God speaking to me I never say can you hurry up I gotta go - uh-huh uh-huh I have no problem texting somebody to say hey man God stalking me right now I'm we'll do lunch tomorrow so we're gonna study the first chapter the entire chapter of the first letter written by Paul to the congregation in Corinth okay it might be a little boring for you I'm sorry to say that because it shouldn't be but I think it's gonna help you study the Word of God in the future okay Paul's first letter to the Corinthians is the problem book in my heart because the Holy Spirit is knocking though literally the hell out of me or or is it hot in here are you guys warm or are you warm whoever takes care of the air-conditioning when you're sweating profusely in your armpits that's usually a good indication that we need to turn it down so as I said Paul's first letter to the Corinthians is the problem book it is in the sense that Paul is handling problems that is wrapping the church and let me list a few divisions divisions not that you guys would know anything about that right thank God that just happened in the first century hero worship of leaders you know what hero worship of leaders is I'll give you a couple of examples most people know these mega church leaders names but you can't name the church nobody ever says I got a rabbi Greg's synagogue nobody would ever say that they know I'm leading here because you should know who's leading the synagogue but this is Beth yushua it's his house he rules okay when somebody says to me I go to so-and-so search I'm like oh boy that's a telltale sign it's a mess here I'm saying by the same token some of you need to show a little bit more respect to leaders and when you can't what I say is start your own church so we have divisions we have hero worship of leaders massive immorality marital problems up the wazoo and legal battles they're suing each other and that's just to name a few as such I believe this letter is most needed today because today our churches are totally problem right however we would be remiss not to mention that this letter first Corinthians contains the most beautiful essay on love not just in the Bible as far as I'm concerned but in all of literature isn't it amazing how God can take something that's so problematic and yet brings something so beautiful out of it at the same time that's God he is a way of taking broken pieces and making a beautiful vows out of it it also contains the most remarkable chapter on resurrection in the whole Bible both Messiah's and ours now ancient Corinth was in southern Greece west of Athens and by the way it's still there it hasn't moved it's still there it hasn't moved it's a tough crowd huh it's strategically situated on the trade routes in Paul's day why is that important Rama who cares where it is yeah that's a big problem because it was the great center in southern Greece aquella Yetta km I still use the great Center for international commerce and immense quantities of traffic came to the city now what do you know about cities that have immense traffic and immense money what happens when you have a lot of people with a lot of money coming into a city it becomes Las Vegas they want to be entertained they want a party they want to have a good time you know their wife and kids a home you know they're just out there having a good time right but not only was that an issue but their religion was so depraved so depraved it soon became the Center for the grossest forms of immorality known to man Paul first visited Corinth on his second missionary journey you can check that out in the book of Acts in the 18th chapter people were saved through the preaching of the gospel and a congregation was formed small about three years later when Paul was preaching in Ephesus he received a letter from Corinth and the letter told him about all the awful things that were going on in his assembly there the assembly that he worked so hard to plant he was an apostle a sent one so this letter that we're going to go over is an answer to the letter he received while he was in Ephesus about all the difficulties that were going on in that congregation the theme of the Epistle is how to set a worldly and carnal church straight or as the rabbi Gregg version goes the church was in the world as it should be but the world was in the church as it shouldn't be let's take a look at the first chapter you might say wow this is so much I don't have time for this and that's why you're misinterpreting the scripture that's exactly why now I have the same 24 hours that you do and I'm sure that you are very busy I have four children I have a wife who's incredibly needy I have a job that's ridiculously busy I get calls from all over the world constantly and ministries I'm overseeing and it's I'm busy as you are I understand we're busy but I have the same amount of time I'm just telling you when you sit down to read the word you've got to take a little time now I know you're watching TV is that a problem no I know you're watching the game is that a problem no no you got to decompress it's cool hopefully what you're watching is cool but when it comes to the Word of God you've got to just consecrate yourself onto it okay let's read enough with enough with the intro from Showell called by God's will to be an emissary of the Messiah schewe and from brother sus tennis to God's Messianic community or depending what you say Church in Corinth don't get caught up in too many semantics guys some of you are so caught up in the minutia you are just frozen I call it the paralysis of analysis you're like spiritual petrified wood the rabbi mine it should say Church it's the same thing Church community synagogue it's a gathering of believers what are you going crazy over seriously consisting of those who have been set apart by Yahshua the Messiah and called to be God's holy people along with everyone everywhere who calls on the name of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah their Lord as well as ours grace to you and Shalom peace from god our father and the lord yeshua the messiah i thank my god always for you because of god's love and kindness given to you through the Messiah Yeshua in that you have been enriched by him in so many ways particularly in power of speech and depth of knowledge indeed the testimony about the Messiah has become firmly established in you so that you are not lacking any spiritual gift and are eagerly awaiting the revealing of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah he will enable you to hold out until the end and thus be blameless on the day of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah God is trustworthy it was he who called you into fellowship with his son Yeshua the Messiah our Lord nevertheless brothers I call on you in the name of our Lord Yeshua them aside to agree all of you in what you say and not let your cells remain split into factions but be restored to having a common mind and a common purpose for some of khloe's people have made it known to me my brothers that there are quarrels among you I say this because one of you says I follow show another says I follow Apollo's another I follow Kiefer while still another says I follow the Messiah as the Messiah been split into pieces was it Showell was put to death on a stake for you will you immersed in the name of Sheol I thank God that I didn't immerse any of you except Crispus and Gaius otherwise someone might say that you were indeed immersed into mining oh yes I did also immerse Stephanus in his household beyond that I can't remember whether I immersed anyone else for the Messiah did not send me to immerse but to proclaim the good news and to do it without relying on wisdom that consists of mere rhetoric so as not to rob the messiahs execution snake of its power for the message about the execution snake is nonsense to those in the process of being destroyed but to us in the process of being saved it's the power of God indeed the Tanakh says I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and frustrate the intelligence of the intelligent where does that leave the philosopher the Torah teacher or any of today's thinkers hasn't God made this world's wisdom look pretty foolish for God's wisdom ordained that the world using its own wisdom would not come to know him therefore God decided to use the nonsense of what we proclaim as his means of saving those who come to trust in it precisely because Jews asked for signs and Greeks trying to find wisdom we go on proclaiming a messiah executed on a stake as a criminal to Jews this is an obstacle and to Greeks it is nonsense but to those who are called both Jews and Greeks this same Messiah is God's power and God's wisdom for God's nonsense is wiser than humanity's wisdom and God's weakness is stronger than humanity strengths just look at yourselves brothers look at whom God has called not many of you are wise by the world standards not many will power a boast noble birth but God shows what the world considers in nonsense in order to shame the wise God chose what the world considers weak in order to change the strong and God chose what the world looks down on is common over a God says nothing in order to bring nothing what the world considers important so that no one should boast before God it is his doing that you are united with Messiah schewe he has become wisdom for us from God and righteousness and holiness and redemption as well that's why you have to read like this and we'll break it down a little bit we won't finish I should have told you that at the onset because that's what the Lord told me but you know he's entitled to change things so I never have anything in stone the only thing I have in stone is what if he says goes let's look at the first three verses from Showell called by God's will to be an emissary of the Messiah Yeshua and from brother Sussman s that's how you pronounce that it's a Greek name to gods messianic community in Corinth consisting of those who have been set apart by Yahshua the Messiah and called to be God's holy people along with everyone everywhere who calls on the name of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah they have Lord as well as ours grace to you and Shalom from God our Father and the Lord show the Messiah okay every single epistle when you write a letter there's a salutation a greeting there's a body of the letter there's a conclusion and a sign-off that's what a letter is it's it's been that way for you know hundreds and hundreds of years so we know we know that there Paul is the writer Paul wrote this letter we also know the recipients the recipients is the congregation in Corinth however it's not just the congregation of Corinth it says the whole with everyone everywhere so this letter some letters why is this a big deal around but you got to be kidding me right I'm not kidding you some letters are written specifically to the congregation in Colossae this letter is not just for that Congregational Church it's for all believers that's how important this letter is okay sustenance who is he well in the book of Acts he was one of the leaders in the Jewish community at Corinth and he was seized and beaten by Gallio who was the governor is this the same sustenance Paul's associate is it it doesn't say but probably because if it wasn't they would give you a little bit more explanation since he was a leader in Corinth and this is written to the congregation of Corinth everybody in Corinth would know whose Susteren this is you follow so because it doesn't necessitate further explanation it's the same person now here's this what if it's not the same person it doesn't really matter chances are it is don't major on the minors or you'll miss the message what is Paul saying to us right out of the gate something the whole body of believers desperately needs to hear guys this is so important to the Lord has nothing to do with me nothing I'm just a puppet just a ventriloquist's dummy but this is so important this word Lord Paul will always speak about Yeshua's lordship in all his letters and he will always reign us in to bring us back to the fact that Yeshua is Lord constantly reminding us why Savior is used 36 times Lord is used over 6,500 times everybody wants a Savior nobody wants a Lord what what is this word Lord mean let's take a look in the Greek it's who d us who d us it means the owner simple you can relate to that right the owner the owner has full rights right out of the gate before you schewe even was crucified in matthew 16 he makes this very brazen statement he says if you want to be a disciple of mine you got to deny yourself now that doesn't mean give up chocolate it has nothing to do with a Lenten season it means I'm telling you what this means in the first century this is what it means and it means the same thing in the 21st century you have no rights you're bought with the price he owns you you're owned you don't you don't but but if he's just a savior you're not owned you follow Jesus is my Savior died for my sins but anybody like to come up and receive him in your heart what does that even mean receive him in my heart what does that it means nothing it sort of means rhetoric repent be immersed in his disgusting death and be filled with the Holy Spirit because he's Lord Savior Messiah Lord it's a progression it's theology and miniature see if I have a Savior if somebody saves me at the beach I used to be a lifeguard I've saved people I swam out and literally saved people from dying thanks and they go on their way most of them embarrass and they go on their way I saved them I was this Savior and they go on their way a lot of times that happens what you show up he saved me I'm gonna go on my way I'm not their Lord I'm just the lifeguard Yeshua's Lord the owner one who has total control of the person what now let me just tell you he's the greatest taskmaster you'll ever have he's not he's never ever gonna hurt you nothing he will say will hurt you the master when in the Second Great Awakening when a lot of the evangelists from England were living in America and preaching amongst the slaves the black slaves in the early 1800s guess what they could totally relate to oh they had no problem with knowing you shoe is master they called them that for a hundred years they knew what it was to be enslaved they were slaves now their taskmasters were evil men and women evil but they could relate to the principle most of us can't relate to the principle come be a slave man Jesus set me free he set you free from sin death in the grave he's your master boy try that in a new way they have to shave churches today try that in the application churches well I just want to bless you no sweetheart you're a slave that doesn't that doesn't fill the seats and it definitely doesn't fill the till if I tell you he loves you and just want to bless you and he's got a plan for your life and by golly you're chosen and blessed beyond measure you can't do no wrong I mean I'll fill all these seats I tell a few more jokes maybe get a better built make me fix my teeth make a little wider get a cool watch I already have the hot wife so I don't need to do that get out of that dump across the street getting a big old house our house is a dump and it's all your fault no I'm telling you I'm a kid from the project's okay we were broke all our life so my house is a mansion my house is a cookie cut a hundred and forty grand home that is a mansion and every time I pull up I go I can't believe I'm living here yeah that's the truth it all depends on where you're from you go with me to India you won't hear them complaining first Corinthians one floor through five it says I thank my god always for you because of God's love and kindness given to you through the Messiah Yeshua in that you have been enriched by him in so many ways particularly in power speech and depth of knowledge right away Paul turns to Thanksgiving it is a trait look at all his letters it is a trait of a believer to find something to be thankful for before you start complaining you know the waiter that walks up to a table of Jewish women you know what he says is anything all right don't you ever repeat that I can you can't you're not a member of the tribe [Applause] he always finds something to be thankful for always and this is a guy that was tortured tortured by non-believers tortured by believers tortured by Jews tortured by Gentiles tortured in the city tortured in the country how does a guy who live such a horrific life always find something to be thankful for good for you good for you I'm proud of you man I am now the Corinthians weren't exactly what we would call deeply committed spiritual Christians they were not in a lot of ways there was very lukewarm but Paul can at least give thanks he's not a liar he's not a liar I don't like liars I don't like manipulators oh man you seem to be really good with the kids did you ever consider did you ever consider um maybe you know children's ministry if somebody said that to me I'd be like I don't know did you ever consider getting rid of familiar spirits and stop manipulating listen to me Sweet Pea the Holy Spirit will let you know what you're supposed to do I don't have to now if you don't answer the call it's probably not gonna be so great for you but I don't have to intercede for the Holy Spirit you follow he'd take care of business but Paul can at least give thanks for the grace of God which was given to them by Messiah Yeshua he's not saying you guys are wonderful you know parents that do that are you that parent that foolish parent that just totally totally complements the kid and never really instructs them because you saw him some secular show that that's the way to raise them God disciplines the ones he loves stop stop following dr. Phil and start following dr. Luke you know what I'm saying but Paul can give thanks for the grace of God which was given to them they heard the testimony of his shoe and they believed how strong are they in the faith isn't out of courtyard there's a Holy of Holies and there's a holy place Who am I to say hey you need to get in the holy place it's between you and God but save to save and don't be judging people or you might get judged yourself 1st Corinthians 1 6 7 indeed the testimony about the Messiah has become firmly established in you so that you are not lacking any spiritual gift and are eagerly awaiting the revealing of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah they're on track they're on the sanctification track and they're gonna see Messiah revealed the dead of Messiah will rise obviously the dead those who are living will be caught up they're on track the very fact that they had these gifts was a confirmation of God's work in their lives now let me tell you something about gifts guys because I I have been around a lot of gifted people I kind of put on the brakes in my life and I got more involved in the Word of God the first 10 years in my in my walk I got involved with some crazy gifted people I've seen them cast out demons like you you have never seen I've seen people spew green bile I've seen unbelievable things I've seen people levitate with all that being said some of it was spiritually spooky and I'll tell you when they fell apart I'll tell you why they fell apart because they they exchanged their limp for a strut you hear me God did not heal Jacob he didn't want him to forget he dragged his leg so he wouldn't forget too many gifted people strut strut like a peacock how can you boast about a gift when you had nothing to do with its reception so he says he has the gift of healing God is healing
