welcome to Frank Buckley interviews this time on the program it's one of the hottest comedians in America it's Jo koy [Applause] jo koy jokes about his Filipino American heritage have resonated with everyone he finds humor everywhere including on his visits to the KTLA 5 Morning News I went and got a fake ten so that Frank and I could who's really asian that's the headline from his start at a coffee Club in Las Vegas to selling out stadiums it's Jo koy on comedy and we welcome to Frank Buckley interviews my Asian brother jo koy welcome great it is great to have you on the program and you know it's that that cooking rice bit that we just showed yeah for everyone who has an Asian mom myself included I was laughing my head off because I thought I have been there with my mom doing that same thing yeah wash the water yeah if it's cloudy pour it out pour it out but but when you measure the water it's this line on your fingertip right there that's how much water you add to the rice but what's crazy about the junk can I tell you two things about that Jim yeah one I already said good night so I already closed the show when I tape that special so if you could imagine like this arena already saying good night in San Diego vation and I walk offstage and then my manager goes aren't you gonna do that rice pit and I walk back out there you're gonna sit back down a bit because I knew that bit needed to be on that special right because when I was doing it on the road uh it was more than just agents I found out that Latinos do the same type of measurement I found out that Indians do the same type of measurement I Africans do the same thing yeah like it it was a very common thing that I thought was very specific to me and my culture right I thought this was just something that Filipinos did and that's what I was gonna ask that is that it's your humor while some of it is related to to having a Filipino mom yeah it is it really does touch people I mean if you look at your audience yeah it's not just Filipino people are Asian American people it's it's the rainbow yeah and it's somehow your humor it's universal yeah it took me a long time to figure out how to do that like I was so scared Frank I really was like I remember because I used to be a regular at the Laugh Factory like Jamie Masada god bless you yeah he's still here yeah Jamie amazing but he used to uh used to like tell me don't do any of those other jokes buddy just talk about your mom tonight talk about your mom and then he would switch my position like sometimes I would get the sweet spot which is like the third or the closing spot on the show yeah and he would emcee me he lets go to the front and be the emcee and just talk about your mom don't say anything else and I mean that that that's where it all came from it was kind of like this like it was like this Olympics of like figuring out these people had no idea who I was by the way right we're talking about me cleaning yachts on Marina del Rey wearing my waiter outfit and then running onstage at eleven o'clock to do a set like they didn't know who I was so I had to figure out how do I tell these people that I'm Filipino and not make it in a way where you had to be Filipino to laugh and then I figured it out that it was just tell the story yeah if you tell the story you're good yeah if you go up there and go hey Filipinos do this and Filipinos do that then people are going okay well I'm not Filipino right but if I go up there and go hey my mom was playing the Wii with my son and I've never seen this woman act the way she acted before when she was playing the Wii with my son that was the first Filipino that was the first joke about my mom that like blew up like because everyone was walking up to me go my mom does that my mom it was like every color right right and it was just a mom playing the Wii with her grandson yeah and that's all it was it's just mine happened to be full of Peeta I want to I want to get to your process and back to this idea of how you come up with the humor but first you talk about your arm you continue to talk about your mom looking at your social media and your YouTube page and we found a clip let's take a look at the Joe with his mom is there a snack in there oh sky flake a chocolate and the house are you eating it's such a simple moment just the two of you and going through mom's purse yeah as you say it's something it we can relate to it is yeah like it's like okay yeah my mom's Filipino but like whose mom doesn't take free stuff from the restaurants to get in her purse you know like and that was what that whole joke was about it's like one thing that I noticed that was really specific with our culture oh well not Asians but in the Filipino culture it's like for some reason that purse is a is is a it's like a status thing no you know me and when you're when you're when you're immigrant that comes to to America sometimes you want to establish where you are in life right and there's nothing wrong with that you know there's a lot of ethnicities that do the same thing right we don't want to put it in the bank we want to show you that we're successful we made it in this country yeah so here's some gold chains here's a gold watch here's a lawyer yeah man but it's it's it's in our culture you know I mean when you come into a country where you're like you know you come from a poor four from a poorer country and you come to America and you want to show people you made it especially with other people that also Ryan came to this country you want to be like you know look I made it there's nothing wrong with that but I always notice that in our culture it was that Louis Vuitton purse I always saw it like and I and I was like when I started performing on stage that's where that whole thing came from I was just like when I started performing I noticed a lot of Filipinos coming to the shows and then I was like okay that's the same person my mom that's the same person that's the same person that's the same person that's it it was the same purse yeah but if you look inside that purse you see Ziploc bags in there it's like okay cool it's like I get it and that's what that whole thing wasn't that videos like well I'm gonna make that video to show exactly what I'm talking about yeah you talk about making it and you know you start the fact that you started in a coffee club everybody starts somewhere you start in a coffee club yeah in Vegas you work the clubs you you've got a not easy yeah I mean this is the guy I remember that like I can remember that night I know exactly what I'm talking about right there because that's from a video I used to shoot that thing on a camera and there was a little girl that was uh uh in that coffee house and she kept talking she was so cute right she everytime she would say something people would laugh right and then I and I remember saying to her I go well I just want to thank I forgot the little girl's name she absolutely crushed tonight never got the light all of us ate it but it was a copy you're supposed to eat it you know but that so you start there now you're you know you're flying around in private jets you got a big fancy tour bus and here's the one thing I get from all that though and I saw this you know in the video that you posted about that you're two sold-out shows at the Forum that was not that you seem to have a lot of gratitude Yeah right you I mean unlike some people were just like yeah man this is happening and supposed to happen you seem to be enjoying the moment yeah of course you should right you should enjoy those moment where do you get that healthy attitude though because some people that was look at that I mean it's not 26,000 peter was great I'm telling you Frank when I turned on those house lights there's not a single seat in that house and I remember we sold out the first forum show in one day like on presale yeah so presale went on sale like like at on a Wednesday and on Thursday it was done completely sold out 13,000 so then a week later we added a second show I promised that I would get into your process of how you come up with the jokes we're gonna take a short break and we'll get to that when we come [Music] I'm all set that to me all the time get it go back in there and get it get what just what that whatever that is just get more grab more put it in the purse put it in the purse go get it get extra she always said that get extra John said go back in there and get extra get extra you don't get extra means steal jo koy on one of his Netflix specials yeah and just to speak to that point about Netflix your first Netflix special you had approached them and said hey take one with me yeah and they turned you down yeah several times like almost uh I probably have to say a record-breaking in seven times they said no to seven times it was something like that it was like every week we kept calling them and I was on I was on like this tear like I was doing like crazy numbers that like The Improv every improv every single improv I was doing 18 sold-out shows in a row like sold out six months in advance go to another place 18 shows in a row sold out in advance you know me all of them and he wouldn't come and I was like can you just see this hour cuz I really want this hour to be on Netflix I don't want it to go anywhere else I want to be on Netflix they said no no no no and then uh I even offered to fly them out I was like I'll fly the whole team out whatever you guys want I'll fly to San Francisco just fine they said no and then I was like okay well I guess I'll go shoot it myself and then I remember when I shot it with me found out that we were shooting it they really it confirmed like hey you can shoot it but we don't want it right I just want you to know like you could shoot it but we really are saying no but I was like okay so we whatever I just had to shoot it cuz I figured if they don't buy it for me then I'll put it on YouTube read whatever I'll put it somewhere I'll get it out there somehow so I shot it and I remember I was completely broke like I put all my money into that one and uh this was in Seattle Seattle live from Seattle and I paid for everything Frank everything director producer the lighting guy the the you know the letters behind me was twenty thousand dollars you know that and that's how much that was the land and the floor that that was like ten thousand or seven thousand I all I know is just like I was like whatever you we need to do to make this look like it flic special then just let's do it whatever you know I mean I wanted it to be more than just my routine like I wanted the routine to be like amazing but I want it to be amazing and we cut it up and uh and we brought it to him where they they bought it that day but it's a six months it took me six months to cut yeah I was good man I cried I was crying so hard when when they said yes yeah and it's still bringing up emotion to you now how come I don't know it's like you you get you get people to say it go for so long and you're just like I got to show you why you got to say yes yeah you know and it's the ball is in your court so it's like if I didn't do that none of this would be happening you know I mean so it's like like you know it's it's always up to you if someone tells you to oh you got a show wha yeah and do you feel like why are we getting all emotional why are you doing this break so good it's all good human and that's I think one of the things that people love about you is that you are human and and I noticed this about your your crowds your fans yeah you're not making fun of them they're not laughing at you yeah they're laughing with you yeah and there is this sort of family like feeling is how I would describe it amongst and I don't mean like it's a family show yeah I mean it's like a family like troupe that is following you around and has followed you from the beginning yeah it's crazy and like I was I was telling my uh my son's my ex my ex ex-wife my son's mommy yeah and after the show we were just like it was like the energy in the room felt like those people were part of that forum with me you know I mean like it wasn't just a show like oh these are my fans it was kind of like everyone was in there like yo we made it like all of us like that's what it felt like like that was energy like look at that that's so genuine right there when I was hugging Tiffany on the stage cuz it was just like this crazy there's my shot it was kind of like everyone was like yo we made it yes that's what that felt like like everyone in that room was like yeah we made it not you Joe we did it and I was like feeling the same emotion like yeah we did this yeah it's crazy yeah like if anyone knows how broke I was its Tiffany you know I mean like Tiffany knows how broke I was like she knows like you know because she's so babysit Joe when I was onstage at the Laugh Factory like so she was like III bring myself a lot Hanish yeah Tiffany Haddish yeah so like I would I would hold uh I would take Joe you know I mean like to the Laugh Factory to do my set you know and then like I'm upstairs and then you know and then when they say my time I put them on the you know in the car seat and then I'm like TIFF watch him just keep an eye oh and I'd run downstairs and I'd do my set then I come back up and then you know TIFF would go down and do her set like it was so great so it's like like that's not like all that stuff that happened that night is like it's not like I was like oh this is the form I got to do like I got a I got a show people why la's LA you know I mean no man like that was everything that went up on that stage at night was me yeah that was me like I lived those moments up until that moment and you you you have maintained these friendships with people like Tiffany yeah and others who you know sometimes you look at comedians and they're so competitive yeah right at least from the side it looks that way but you have this group that that they all came to support you yeah you know at the forum yeah you're clearly you know close to them yeah I don't understand that mentality yeah yeah I get it to be competitive but - but - not like help or whatever is it's kind of weird to me you know I don't understand what that is everyone acts like there's only one mountain you know I mean like they all think that there's just this one big mountain and we're all climbing to reach that same mountaintop and it's like no man there's you ever fly into Denver I said this on my pod one time but do you ever fly over the Rockies you don't mean it's it's wonder to see how many mountains there are and how many mountaintops there are yeah there's not enough people in this world to stand on top of every single mountain inside the Rockies there's enough for everybody yeah and there's it yeah so like yeah man it's just help you you you incorporate so much of your life into your into your comedy and to your humor and now there is a movie coming about your life and we're gonna take a short break and we'll get into that when we come back with joy [Music] if I send my son in school with a Tupperware container he goes to school with a clear ball and it's gonna blue lid and it's a Tupperware on the lid my mom's Tupperware usually an empty Cool Whip container jo koy talking about his both his son and his mom and to that end you know you that that Tupperware container joke the Cool Whip bit that you do you used to be take your lunch in a Cool Whip and that's one of the jokes that yeah you didn't you make your son yeah it was the funniest thing yeah oh he was so mad but he of course he ended up not taking he just grabbed the stuff out of it yeah yeah that was so proper tough that's a real Tupperware that's mine your humor though comes from this a lot of it and it comes from just mining your your life and as you said it's about telling stories yeah and I wonder do you are you constantly thinking about these things are you thinking oh that could be a bit or do you how does it come about um like I just want to tell the stories like I love storytellers so like when I was a kid when I was like eleven twelve like I couldn't get enough of like just listening to someone tell a story you know like I really loved it when Louie Anderson would go into character about him and his brother or I think it was him and his brother or something like that and uh it's just him being that kid character I just was like oh my god so funny it's not like I'm constantly thinking it's just I'll go up and just say it right and then for some reason it becomes like it writes itself my process is so weird Frank like I swear it cuz I don't know what it is I don't know maybe because I've been watching stand-up since I was like 10 11 - now that like when I decide to talk about a topic I know how to set it up I know how to build the premise correctly I know where the punch line should land and for some reason I can find a callback somewhere it's weird like I know this is weird that I'm even saying this like I'm some kind of robot or something right but like I don't know what it is cuz I don't write it down oh so you're not one of those guys who's writing you got no books and no kidding huh and for some reason I'll figure out the story I just figured out this other one the other day in Florida I just went up and did this whole thing about talking in the microphone incorrectly and then and then it was so funny because I have this videographer that I take everywhere on the road and he records all my sets and he literally was like you made that up on show 1 and it became a bit and show 2 and I go I don't know how I do it I really don't Wow we were so excited to see the other day the headline in deadlines and and in the trades that they're making a movie based on your life that's crazy and it's not and these are people these are like some serious producers were involved in this tell Dan Lynn I love you right back Dan Lynn of course Aladin and you know Legos it won it - yes for his franchises yeah and I pitched him that movie about I don't know almost a year ago and he loved the idea we never had anything concrete he just loved the idea of the of that movie and he was a fan of my stand-up and then uh and then after coming in hot came out on Netflix we get a phone call from Amblin and we go to Amblin and uh and everyone in there you know jab Holly everyone in there who run it are like Stephen is a huge fan of yours and I was just like Stephen Holmes yeah I was like Stephen from accounting and uh and they were like Spielberg Spielberg watched you're coming in hot this one and he sent a mass email to the company and they even showed me this Matthew I was like I was like I couldn't believe it like you know we live at a time where it's like even hard to even just get someone to look at you now yeah there's because there's so much the quantity is just overwhelming now in Hollywood it's like you you really got to get someone to see it and that it's so hard right yeah so for someone like Steve to see that it was just like I remember we of course we cried me and my manager we just we start cheering up because it's like just get a tape on a desk which doesn't even exist anymore a tape on the desperate you know what I mean yes to send your video to someone to see it and hopefully they'll see it and hopefully it'll go up the chain and hopefully Steven will eventually see it well with with with that Netflix special he saw it that is fantastic and he loved it and it all here we go with the crying again if if I would have taken that no from Netflix and just went alright well hopefully you'll see me next year Netflix please just you know you gotta see what I'm doing I could have done that route you know I mean I could have went online and told everyone all my fans hey cancel your Netflix subscription some reason they don't want to give me a special I could have done that that spent - all that negative energy and did that but instead I chose to shoot it myself and and prove to them that I was you know I should have been on that and I should be on that network yeah and and if it wasn't for that I wouldn't never got coming in hot which is what they paid for it Netflix paid for that we can't wait to see what you cook up next oh boy seriously thank you so much for being thank you I talk too much no not at all you're not finished and it's not complimentary we only have two but let me turn it there we always have exclusive content on the Frank Buckley interviews audio podcast we're gonna continue the conversation with Joe there with some of your questions he is jo koy thanks for joining us we'll see you next time [Music] [Music]
