phil's face i hope that you will worship with us with sing with us and will shout with us as we worship the lord in spirit and in truth this morning for all of our first-time visitors we welcome you [Music] and started us on our way praise the lord praise the lord i want to thank donovan and lafon our princeton theological seminary students for leading us in worship this morning praise the lord it is education and youth sunday and we know how important it is to learn and have understanding and wisdom literacy the ability to read and write along with prayer are two of the most important weapons that we have to succeed in this life so if your child or if you are a student and you need some assistance in learning and some extra help with your academics we have academic excellence here at first baptist it is a ministry that is catered to academics our sister teresa blair is our leader of that ministry along with her team she is here to welcome you if your child needs extra help amen amen well it is prayer time hallelujah it is prayer time for we know that we pray because it is a part of worship and we know that god loves us and whatever we're going through we know that we can presence and lift up your name this morning god we ask now that you would accept our worship god that you would bless us father we stand in the gap for our families for this church in our community this day we pray for our children who have returned back to school god we pray that you would put a hedge of protection around them god we pray for each and every school that is represented here god we pray that these buildings would be a structure that our children can go in and learn and grow and mature god father we pray that our children will recognize the importance of academics god father teach them to ask for help if they need help in their studies god but to hunger and thirst after righteousness god we pray that you would protect our children protect our teachers god our support staff god our administrators god father we know this covet virus is still raging god so we ask for your protection god we ask that you would surround our children with friends that are positive god those that would encourage them to learn god and we as a special blessing god over our teachers and administrators god all support staff god cafeteria workers bus drivers god we pray that you would be in the midst of our learning [Music] father we thank you for parents who have sacrificed to send their children to school god we thank you for parents this morning god we pray god that we would continue to be people that hunger and thirst after knowledge god and that we would call upon your name for wisdom god god we thank you for your word this morning i pray god that we would hide your remind you of a man named joseph acts 4 verse 36 tells us he was a native of cyprus he was a levite appraiser and the apostles gave him a new name barnabas means encourager joseph got caught up in church and three things happened in the early church first in verse 34 we're told that they were all of one mind and one heart that no one had need and that when the disciples the apostles gave their testimony everyone who had land or something to spare sold it put it at the apostles feet and it was used to take care of those in need beloved if we profess our faith give our testimony receive a word it's our responsibility to share with those in need on the fifth sunday of october we're going to give a large contribution to lot carrick we're going to help rebuild haiti we're working now to help those in need in louisiana and i'm at the foundation of our church ida had an impact on us our building was impacted negatively and yet our god it says right there in acts god was so gracious as none of them had a need that same gracious god is here to take care of us and we participate in that graciousness in offering back a return through tithes and offerings i'm inviting you to worship god decrees to his people that he's about to give them so many blessings that's going to make their head spin he said that blessings are going to be on the heels of other blessings and i believe that that spirit is in this place today i believe that god is about to send blessings on top of blessings he's about to do miracles on top of miracles he's about to make ways on top of ways he's opening doors on top of doors this is what we praise him for because he's the kind of god that is able to do exceeding and abundantly above all that we can ask or think and we give him praise and we give him glory this is what i see miracles on miracles on miracles on miracles do you believe it do you believe it miracles on miracles the same miracles on miracles here we go [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh away [Music] [Applause] has he made a way for anybody this morning did he make a way for anybody last week did anybody get a paycheck and he made a way for you i see you have schools on your shirt did did god make a way for you when you didn't know how you were going to get through but god brought you through he made a way we serve a way-making god through our tears through our pain through our failure god makes a way we praise god for making away my brothers and sisters for fighting battles for winning wars for making ways i want to um i want to stop and and not just honor myles for his ministry let's praise god for what god is doing for the next generation of our church [Music] but i want to ask if our young ushers would just come up for a second and just stand up here if we don't acknowledge our future we'll lose our future so all of our young ushers [Applause] this is the future of first baptist [Applause] now when you all see your future and you see how good god is to you i want you to give god better praise than if you were at a jets game or you at a giants game or you at a knicks game if you can root for your favorite player you can root for your babies you can let them know they are wonderfully and fearfully made that they are the apple of god's eyes you can let them know that they have a future that satan can't have them but they have a grand design [Music] we praise god and for all of our young people who are sitting in the sanctuary if you'd stand for a second if you're in college or high school or middle school all of our young people who are in the congregation let's praise god for them all of our young people [Music] you all may take your stations thank you so much [Applause] it is a beautiful thing when we have young people in church [Applause] we want to honor all of our youth and young adults and all of the people who work with them we praise god for them for the countless hours of volunteering and tutoring my mama grandma used to say a closed mouth don't get fed so now that you know that there is academic help don't wait until you get in trouble there's nothing wrong with finding support and being smarter let's encourage our young adults and youth to be excellent seas will get you pass but getting past ain't exceeding [Music] we've got to learn to raise the bar for our youth and our young adults without shame [Applause] [Music] i told someone the other day my family celebrated me from graduating from high school but they didn't throw me the party i wanted they told me we expected you to graduate from high school we'll throw you a party when you get a phd we should expect certain things and stop celebrating the mediocre but we should raise the bar we have young brilliant minds that we need to be pushing and challenging it doesn't mean everyone has to go to college some are destined for trade school and that's amazing too but if you're going to be the plumber own the plumbing company you're going to be the electrician own the electrical company we got to move beyond working for folks and start getting folks to work for us amen which means we got to raise the bar we've got to raise the bar and so i encourage all of our young people to continue to move forward to climb higher heights i want to honor all of you who wore your your school jerseys and grandparents and parents who wore your children's school we praise god you paid the tuition it's your jersey amen [Applause] we want to celebrate all of you i represent the morehouse college and we want to honor all of you who whether you've gone to a historically black college or not the fact that you've gone and tried to do better is all we ask we also want to celebrate today we have with us mr john saunders the ceo of fleischmann hillard one of the world's largest public relations firms is visiting with us today and we celebrate you for joining with us today mr saunders and the vice president for public for his organization ms adrian c smith my spellman's sister we uh [Music] we are excited what god is doing for first baptist and look forward to the continued growth i want to not tarry any longer today we continue our series how did i get here anybody ever ask that question how did i get here and today we're going to venture into genesis the 50th chapter genesis chapter 50 and we're going to begin our reading in verse number 15. we're going to read verses number 15 to verses number 21. if you are physically able and so inclined would you stand for the reading of the word of god let us pray god of our weary ears god of our silent tears god of our ancestors we come to celebrate youth we recognize we stand on the shoulders of mama papa of saints of old who cried all night long we thank you for the ancestors who who weren't allowed to go to college but they made a way for us now hide me behind the cross for i have nothing to say but your word has spoken for centuries reduce my ego so the people see not me but only a manifestation of your mercy now may the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you now oh my redeemer amen the word of god goes as follows realizing that their father was dead joseph's brothers said what if joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong that we did to him so they approached joseph saying your father gave this instruction before he died say to joseph i beg you forgive the crime of your brothers and the wrong they did in harming you now therefore please forgive the crime of the servants of the god of your father joseph wept when he spoke to them then his brothers also wept fell down before him and said we are your slaves but joseph said to them do not be afraid am i in the place of god even though you intended to do harm to me god intended it for my good in order to preserve a numerous people as he is doing today so have no fear i myself will provide for you and your little ones in this way he assured them speaking kindly to them i want to reread one verse and i'm going to reread it in full and and i bet you dollars to donuts most of you didn't know this was the complete verse most of you stop at point a of the verse that's the first half of the verse because that's the self-serving half but the full verse says this even though you intended to do harm to me god intended it for good that's where most people stop but the full verse says in order to preserve a numerous people as he is doing today i'm gonna preach it in a second but i want you to know god doesn't save you for you we gotta stop being self-serving christians and we got to stop quoting the bible that makes us feel good and quote the bible that makes us do good please be seated today i want us to pray on this subject joy for the journey joy for the journey many of us are journeying but we have no joy we get up we lay down we do the same routine over and over again but there's no joy in fact by wednesday most of us are yelling how tired we are god didn't make us to emotionally survive god made us to thrive but why don't we have more joy for our journey statistically african-american youth are suffering at levels of depression that have been unheard of more of our babies are committing suicide than any other time in us history when you were 15 16 what were you so depressed about was your biggest problem that she broke up with you or that that mama didn't get you the pair of converse you wanted what are our babies struggling with so much that they are being diagnosed earlier and earlier why are we raising a generation of nervous children and what is it that we as people of faith should be doing in order to ensure that our young people are not struggling emotionally and psychologically well we know that being black got its own stress scared of the police car that's supposed to protect and serve black women are dying of diseases that other groups aren't dying of at rates they're not dying the stress of being poor i've recently become familiar and exploring new jersey i noticed there's a difference between some malls i went to a mall the other day and there was dolce and and and all these high-end stores it was beautiful i i walked around and they had nice restaurants legal seafood i myself am watching my cholesterol red bottoms were walking out of doors and and everybody seemed happy then i went to a different mall that wasn't much more joy in that mall it was it was a little more sedate people didn't speak as nicely heads were lowered there's something about struggling for resources that'll mess up your mood but that ain't always been for us we come from a people who could do amazing things with what other people didn't want we could take ramen noodles and cut up some hot dogs and you had a delicacy [Applause] when did we get so bourgeois that if it didn't filet it don't taste good is it that our joy is sapped because of the superficial comforts that we seek so much that without those comforts we are not who we think god made us to be and are our babies struggling to find acceptance in a culture that has hated them since 1619. no god has joy for our journey but there is also a sapping of joy because sometimes there are snakes slithering all around you here we see that the snake ain't always your boss sometimes they gave you birth sometimes you shared bedrooms with them they see god's hand on you and and our young people call them haters and joseph had a dream and and joseph's big problem is some of our problems joseph shared a big dream with small people not everybody's happy that god gave you a vision not everybody's happy that you went to harvard and and hampton some people hate the fact that god is doing for you what they think god should have done for them not everybody's smiling in your face loves you what is that old song smiling in your face and all the time they want to y'all not saved i told you [Applause] stop singing that r b up in here it's the devil's music those backstabbers there are a lot of things that can rob us of our joy but then i realized as i said that as a theologian that that is not scripturally correct see if if i read my bible i recognize that god says i will give you a joy that the world can't take away from you why are you giving people power in your life that god didn't give so if you just give me a few moments i'll i'll give you what god gave me to help you stop giving people power that they don't have the responsibility to hold stop renting out space to cheap people live your life like you're expensive and and set healthy boundaries and if people can't respect you they shouldn't get time with you you can love your family and not be held hostage by them too many of us are trying to please people who ain't pleased with themselves we're pouring water into cups that have holes in them and as long as you're trying to satisfy them they will take and take and take and take and one day you'll be dead and gone and they'll be looking for somebody else to take from joseph had a dream and the problem was his dream was expensive and he told it to cheap people daddy gave him a coat of many colors to represent the glory that would be in his life and joseph told his brothers i'm about to do big things his brother said oh are we to serve you y'all know how it is in our modern parliament who she thinks she is oh she didn't got a little job so now she thinks she cute she bought herself a little hair so now she thinks she she all that she she thinks she all he went to school now he uppity what i found is when people don't like your security that's about their insecurity but do not get wrong there is a difference between confidence and arrogance arrogance is i'm better than you confidence is god has blessed me and if god has blessed me god can bless you too far too often we blur the lines and we assume position and title as it entitles us to lord it over other people you're the starting point guard and everybody else is now a scrub you're the head cheerleader now you're the cutest thing in the school be careful of taking god's blessings as if you earned them and can keep them for as the lord giveth the lord can take it away be good stewards over your blessings joseph made a mistake he shared his expensive destiny with cheap people and the bible says they threw him into a hole sold him into slavery but there's a beautiful thing about opposition opposition with god is always opportunity and when people think they have destroyed your destiny they assume the role of god resentment is at the heart of what i want to talk to you about see the robbery of joy finds itself in resentment and when you live in resentment when you're holding on to stuff when you mad at somebody about something they did ten years ago and they not even thinking about you no more that ever happened to you you re you steaming you boiling you angry and they walk up to you like hey i ain't seeing you in a while they've lost no sleep they've lost no weight you've given them space in your head they done got remarried had three more children bought a new house you still mad over the divorce resentment holds you back while the world moves forward resentment keeps you stuck in your past when god is trying to move you to your future resentment looks like this god i don't know why you treating me like this resentment has you praying that the one you think is your enemy loses why y'all waste your time praying about the downfall of other people i ain't trained about trump once god is dealing with trump [Applause] we have a church so fixated on him he's one of the most preached about topics in churches across america he ain't the president no more resentment leads us to place high on the altar of our spirit people who have long served their purpose in your life aristotle the philosopher tells us that emotions are stirred up by things external to us he he called them pathos he said that pathos is that which is in you that is made operational by that which is outside of you in other words your emotions are stirred up by people who are trying to gain some sense of control in your life and just as they try to gain access you can deny them access setting healthy boundaries allows you to say you ain't going to get on my nerves today i see you texting i ain't texting back i know you calling i ain't answering the phone setting healthy boundaries allows you to live in a peace that satan wants to deserve so joseph now finds himself on the back end of his trauma he has been falsely accused of rape he has been sold into slavery by his family he has been in jail imprisoned and given a sentence for a crime he didn't commit joseph got a lot of reason to have some resentments but don't we all brought from africa stripped of our language unable to raise our babies watching our women raped having to raise children by slave owners and bring them back into our houses and receive them as if they're ours watching our children sold off into other places and plantations ripped with beaten into half inches of our lives emasculated told we can't read or write put back into second-class buses unable to see ourselves as full citizens black people have a reason to be resentful and yet we fight for our nation and yet we love our nation and yet we run for office oh how blessed america is that we're not as angry as we could be we could be trying to burn this place down but instead america's got the traffic light because we have no resentment america has washington d.c because we have no resentment we have built buildings and made ways and explored places because we are the most forgiving people in history the only way we emotionally and psychologically survived in the craziness of western white supremacy is because we decided not to live in resentment and now far too many of us are resentful that i didn't get the promotion resentful that he rejected me resentful that i'm not in the place that i thought i should be joseph has every reason to be resentful and yet he makes a choice look at the scene there's a famine in egypt and joseph is now the prime minister he ain't even a citizen he's from a second-class people and has found himself in the white house god had given him a gift and he saw the economic forecast he taught them how to put aside the grain and how to live healthy lives there's a famine coming and this hebrew this young man who's not supposed to have the authority and position has come from being imprisoned to being the prime minister oh my god can do for me when no other human being can stop my god can open doors for me that other people try to push clothes my god can take me places other people don't think i belong in my god can elevate me in ways other people try to hold me down my god can see my blackness and take me into whiteness and say you are wonderfully and fearfully made my god can take me from nowhere and take me somewhere my god said once you were no people but now you're my people my god can take a grandma who cleaned the white house and put her grandson in the white house my god when you know who your god is you stop asking people for permission to heal see y'all waiting for somebody to approve your healing i don't need nobody to approve my healing you don't like me my bible says all i gotta do is shake the dust off my feet and keep it pushing stop seeking the approval of people who have their own self-esteem issues joseph is prime minister and resentment could be all on him but he has made a decision and here are three things that i think we need to know to get out of some resentment the first thing is righteousness and righteous reactions repeal resentment listen to what joseph says if he still holds a grudge if he's still angry with us maybe if we tell a little lie because you know if people have shown you who they tell you to forgive us and not to do us any harm but joseph being a righteous man didn't matter what daddy said for when you know who your god is and what your god did for you you won't do and say certain things because you don't want to mess up the righteousness that god has given you i'm afraid to cuss people out because god's been so good to me i'm afraid to treat people like they treated me because god's been blessing me why would i give up my blessing to lower myself to be like you i got to rise above who you are righteousness repeals resentment stop sending back a nasty email because they sent you one i got to a place where somebody would email me nasty every day i started praying for them i'd read the email and i go may the lord jesus touch you and keep you you know what they did for a month they stopped emailing me because they could not stand the satan inside of them could not stand the god inside of me stop forfeiting the god inside of you to match the power of the satan inside of them you can't outlie a liar you can't out hate a hater you can't out be angry somebody who's angry in their dna live in the joy of god walk in the hope of god pray in the love of god live in this peace of god he received his brothers first of all as prime minister they didn't even have to get this far he could have had them killed before they got in the building but he was a righteous man now don't get me wrong being righteous is hard turning the other cheek is hard people posting stuff about you on facebook you want to type back here's what i've learned silence has power i don't respond to pigeons because god made me an eagle [Music] stop fighting with people who ain't on your level folks patrol me on instagram facebook i got former employees they all they want to do is talk about me but as long as they doing it they making me famous fighting with pigeons and be eagles doesn't the bible say you should mount up with wings like eagles stop walking with chickens you don't like what god told me to do go do you somewhere else well the second thing is righteousness reverses righteousness recognizes the reality you choose not to be resentful doesn't mean you can't accept what's going on live fully in your feelings the bible says they came to joseph and joseph wept sometimes people hurt your feelings sometimes people hurt my feelings we need to stop saying something to our children that is causing them emotional turmoil here's what i want you not to teach your children don't say it to him ever again sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me that's a lie words hurt emotional and psychological abuse hurts calling people out of their name hurts we now call it bullying we need to stop telling our children that they should not be hurt because people make fun of the pimple on their face it's okay to be hurt but live your pain to go to the next level in life cry if you got to cry didn't let god wipe your tears and go be a winner the best way to succeed is not to stop much of mental illness is trying to ignore the realities that we live divorce hurts cry bankruptcy hurts cry unemployment hurts cry bad diagnoses hurt cry and baby after you cry wipe the dust off yourself stand up and say if god be for me who can be against me joseph the prime minister of egypt wept because he was disappointed in his brothers beloved it's okay to experience disappointment it's okay that people fail you it's okay that they didn't meet your expectations it's okay to cry emotions aren't weakness they are strength and if you are strong enough to cry you gonna be strong enough to get up you're going to be strong enough to fight again life is hard well the last thing i wanted to tell you is relying on the righteous one reverses resentment we all feel resentment from time to time have you ever said i'm not where i thought i would be in life at this age have you ever said as much as i did for them they gonna do me dirty like this have you ever asked god why god took your mother when you were 15 have you ever wondered why things happen to you when people who are far more ethically corrupt than you seem to be living good lives have you ever tried to figure out what you did to deserve where you are and for the life of you you can't understand it you ain't put your mouth on nobody you ain't slept with nobody's partner you ain't stole nobody's money and yet you still not where you think you should be you didn't read your scripture prayed your prayers sung in the choir you ain't smoked a cigarette and yet you got cancer have you ever lived in a place where you've tried to figure out god what are you doing and why is it happening to me be careful because it could lead you to resentment but listen to what joseph says joseph says what you meant for my destruction god meant for my good so that i may serve my people and bring them to better places here's what i want you to understand about the righteous one when the righteous one gives you a purpose no devil no nymph no hater is going to stop you when god gives you a purpose the reality of who you are can never be thwarted when god says you going to be this guess what baby you going to be that doesn't matter who gets in your way when god says you gonna be the head not to tell doesn't matter who your boss is god will make a way out of no way when god says you're gonna be the lender not to borrow you may be broke today but oh there's something on the way when god says knock and it shall be opened it may not happen tomorrow but when that door opens up stuff's going to flow down on you in ways you can't imagine when god has made you bigger than your enemy all you got to do is rely on a living loving liberating god take your eyes off your hater stop being in resentment know that god has a bigger purpose in your life god is about to take you somewhere you didn't know you can go god is about to open a door somebody doesn't think you can walk through god is about to make a way that somebody's going to try to stop you because when god has a purpose on your life can't nobody stop you from living in your purpose can't nobody close the door that only god can open can't nobody block you from a way god has made can't nobody talk you out of your blessing talk you out of your boldness you are the apple of god's eye god has made you bigger and better don't let somebody talk you out of where you're supposed to go just want to remind you that you have one god that one god ain't your employer that one god isn't the bike that holds your mortgage i'm here to tell you because i've lost a house and everything i lost god has replaced tenfold everybody who walked away from me god has brought somebody else tenfold everything i thought i would be god has raised me above and beyond god has done for me what i couldn't dream of on my own they thought they killed me they thought i died but early in the morning when god got up on the third day he got up and got me up with him i got up with jesus i got power that the world didn't give i got power that the world can't take i got joy that ain't predicated on money i got peace that walk in hamper cause if god be for me who can be against me stop living in resentment try something this week when they get on your nerves smile they gonna get scared either they think you're gonna shank them when they start emailing you like you not a grown human being email back and say i love you god told me to love you i pray that whatever is burdening your spirit and creating this nastiness in your heart that god releases it from you i pray that god opens a door for you that seems to be closed because you're mad at who god made me to be i pray that the lord elevates you above your loneliness that you find peace that you're trying to take from me i pray that the security of the lord rest on you like it rests on me cause guess what i got more than one nerve and you're not gonna get on it today when you learn how to talk to me like you got some sense then you call me back until then we ain't got nothing else to talk about i love you baby bye bye look y'all got to learn to speak to your problem speak life into death walk with god stop allowing yourself to be held hostage to people who don't love themselves and because they don't love themselves how they gonna love you they nasty cause they mad because they can see the glory of god in your life i am a child of the king i am a living testimony i have a destiny god making a way out of no way stop apologizing for favor stop apologizing for grace stop apologizing for mercy step on in to what god has for you step on in to a new job step on in to a new marriage step on in to a new house step on in to new peace step on in to a new relationship step on in to a new boo step on in to a new baby step on in to a new joy [Music] stop living in yesterday yesterday gone today is a bright new future anybody ready to step into something anybody ready to go where you ain't been before try what you ain't tried before eat what you ain't eating before please stand the doors of the church are open i'm ready to step into something i'm ready to let go of yesterday i ain't got time to be mad at nobody it's robbing me of my energy and my peace what god has for me tomorrow i gotta make space for it you gotta make space which means you gotta get rid of that old negative energy and emotion if you're ready to make space for something just just do it with me just i'm ready to make space just just use your hand and say i'm ready to make space i'm ready to pull everything that don't need to be in my life out the way i'm ready to grab everything that god had i gotta get rid of some stuff and make some space i gotta get rid of some people and make some space i gotta get rid of some toxic energy and make some space i gotta get rid of some negative emotion and make my some space [Music] make space she don't like
