video you know we're in a time of lockdowns of social distancing and we need opportunities to be intimate as a people of faith opportunities to connect with one another to pray to study the word to i want your attempt to you to give your attention to this video amen well with this church being as large as it is the small groups help people get to know people that are in church in a smaller group more intimately so you come here like i'm on the choir and the choir comes back and um i only know people by faces and i know the choir members but people will come up to me and speak to me and say hey venus how are you if they haven't known my name and i don't know who they are because there's so many people and i don't get to meet them but in the small group now i have a group of people that i know very well you know who pray for you pray for each other you pray for each other's family if we have other opportunities to get together we do that so it gives you an opportunity to meet other people especially in a large institution like this and i'd like to piggyback on what she said venus said i am new to first baptist and in being new to first baptist i became engaged with first baptists through this trenton small group if it had not been for ideas chief trustee wilson and kim and that small group i would have never integrated into first baptists like i have been able to at this time and i'm very grateful for that i was on the fence for a long time and i became a member of a small group and shortly after that became a facilitator i love it i've been blessed i've been blessing and there's nothing to lose [Music] yeah every day just come on and join just come on now and join you'll be welcomed in and we'll give you a connection that's right that's true you always to do what god does because we're so busy we're we're we're following a program when we should be following god so there's a lot of nervous energy in the building this morning it's disturbing but it reminds me that we spend too much time in noise even the video you couldn't understand the video because there was music behind it because we're always trying to do something so i'm going to ask the musicians just to stop for a second there are times when you need to sit with god be present with god stop trying to make something happen and let god happen to you from the first thing this morning my clock went off and all week long i've woken up to the sun have you ever just sat still in god for a second do we always need noise and movement what are we afraid to hear if we just stop for god so let's just take take a moment breathe allow god to exist in the space feel your breath seek your heartbeat be present with god allow god to be present with you there is a sweetness in silence and word it's our responsibility to share with those in need on the fifth sunday of october we're going to give a large contribution to lot carry we're going to help rebuild haiti we're working now to help those in need in louisiana and i'm at the foundation of our church ida had an impact on us our building was impacted negatively and yet our god it says right there in acts god was so gracious as none of them had a need that same gracious god is here to take care of us and we participate in that graciousness in offering back a return through tithes and offerings i'm inviting you to worship pressure didn't take you out last week and why your diabetes didn't creep up on you when you laid down last night do you understand the biology that went into keeping you alive there are some things too great for our comprehension but our god has it all under control that's good news y'all and sometimes we forget god is in control as smart as we think we are we are not smart enough to make the sun stay in place and the earth flow around the waters to continue to move we are but bystanders in the great movement of god philosophers have tried to figure it out and they can't so as we come this morning we start this new conversation about how did i get here and we're going to spend the next several weeks talking about how did i get here i want to first thank all of you i have read every card i've read every facebook message i want to thank you for taking the time because people don't have to take the time to think about you so for all your birthday wishes and all of your cards your kind thoughts your gifts i am grateful that you took the time and i want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart our word comes from the book of job this morning the first chapter of the book of job how did i get here job chapter one i'm going to begin my reading in verse number 13. i'm going to read through verse 22 out of the new revised standard version of the text as you are taking your stand i will lead us in prayer god of our weary ears god of our silent tears lord you know it all [Music] we come before you god humbly seeking to invoke in you to conjure in you a renewing and right mind hide me behind the cross for i have nothing to say but your word has spoken for centuries reduce my ego that people see not me but only a manifestation of your mercy god i thank you that you allow a wretch like me to stand now may the words of my mouth meditations in my heart be acceptable to you oh my savior and my redeemer now and forever amen job the first chapter says as follows one day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house a messenger came to job and said the oxen were plowing and the donkeys were feeding beside them and the sebbians fell on them and carried them off and killed the servants with the edge of the sword i alone have escaped to tell you while he was still speaking another came and said the fire of god fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them i alone have escaped to tell you while he was still speaking another came and said to chaldeans formed three columns made a raid on the camels and carried them off and killed the servants with the edge of the sword i i alone have escaped to tell you and while he was still speaking another came and said your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in the eldest brother's house and suddenly a great wind came across the desert struck the four corners of the house and it fell on the young people and they are dead i alone have escaped to tell you then job rose tore his robe shaved his head fell on the ground and worshiped he said naked i came from my mother's womb naked i shall return the lord gave and the lord has taken away blessed be the name of the lord and in all this job did not sin or charge god with wrongdoing i want you all to pray with me on pulling peace from your problems pulling peace from your problems you may be seated beloved we all have problems i'm afraid of christians who are always telling me when i first meet them always i am blessed and highly favored how are you doing oh the lord is good all the time i'm afraid of them and i don't want you all to change your language when you see me next and you want to say you are blessed and not say it but just know i'm not always going to say that to you just know there are times where i may be blessed and highly favored but i don't feel that way there are times if i'm honest and i've decided since i'm here with y'all and i've moved across the country and my kids are still on the other side i've decided i might as well keep it 100 with y'all there are times where i don't feel the presence of god he's there i just don't feel it there are moments in life where i ask how did i get here if i'm honest there are times when my holy self don't feel like being holy now i know y'all always holy you are always right with god but your pastor struggles sometimes sometimes people get on my almost last nerve and i want to say stuff that ain't holy i've been in situations where i said god if you get me out of this j i i promise if you get me out of this i will never ever ever i will live for you forever i i will never if you just get i have bargained with god and lie because the moment he got me out i got back in if i'm honest and you don't have to be i've asked myself over and over again how did i get here you ever wake up look beside you don't do it now [Applause] if they sit next to you look straight look at me say how did i get here you ever go to a doctor's appointment and told you have cancer you've never smoked you've never drank you've lived as holy as you can and yet you stage three and ever asked how did i get here one day if you are blessed to live long enough you will stand over the casket of someone you love if you've not buried a parent yet maybe that day will come one day you will look upon the continents of your mother or your father and all that you knew since the day you were born is gone you will ask yourself how did i get here we live in a world so filled with anxiety with stress and struggle and we come to church every week and nobody's having an honest conversation naomi osaka is 23 years old simone biles is 24 years old they are babies to many of us 60 70 million dollar babies and the stress of life has caused them to ask how did i get here what happens when are you our children when african-american youth are committing suicide at record rates and nobody is talking about it how did we get here how did we land in a nation that is trying to transport us back literally to 1619. how did we get here how did we get to a place where we are so mean to each other how did we get here job gives us some insights into how we got here and i spent the re reading c.s lewis his small and lovely book the problem of playing pain guides me today his existential look at pain is something that we are afraid to look at we anesthetize our pain johnny walker seeks us in our pain a joint soothes us in our pain little night rendezvous gives us 20 good minutes in our pain big mac we dare not talk about popeyes it it it helps us in our pain they are sads that we use shopping louie and versace people we will never meet taking all our money to heal our pain and yet we never ask the great existential question in life how did we get here have you asked yourself recently do you recognize you are the common denominator in everything that happens in your life do you realize that you are not only the some choice some choice of your every decision but you have the power to make new choices that god woke you up this morning and gave you a new opportunity to answer answer the question how did you get here you know how you got there you got that because you were in the right place maybe at the wrong time he looked good she had the right dress on you know how you got there but there are times when we simply don't know how we got there job helps us deal with the theological question called theodicy theodicy is how if god is so good does a good god allow bad things to happen the theosotic question plagues us bill jones the great yale professor in the early 60s wrote a book that black theology has not really yet responded to the book was called is god a white racist jones was asking if god is so good and god loves black people why do black people catch so much hell and are we serving a god who dislikes our blackness no one has responded to jones because the answer is hard it is hard unless you define and redefine what a good god means see in a materialistic western society a good god means he gave you a mercedes that you got a big house that's what a good god means i'm blessed and highly favored because i got on gucci some of the best moments in my life were spent waking up in a one bedroom apartment on 4236 benin road getting dressed for school next to an oven door that was laid down that provided me heat some of the best moments in my life were sharing a bedroom with an 80 year old grandmother and hearing her wake up and pray in the morning before i got out of bed it wasn't the money it was a god who was present in a house a god of my ancestors who said you are somebody before i got a degree from princeton god loved me and far too often we define the goodness of god by the things that moths can eat and things can rust and when god does not provide us the superficialities in life we begin to question is god good we serve a god so good that we survived the bloody middle passage got up and picked cotton in the morning and sing songs of jubilee at night we serve a god so good that white supremacy has not destroyed us that's a good god that in the midst of it we designed washington dc and made plasma and sing the songs of zion in the midst of it we created the blues with john lee hooker in the midst of it we swung the bat like hank aaron a good god says no matter what your circumstances are you will see my glory in the midst of it but how did you get here how did we all land in this space where at times we are uncertain about our future trying to figure out why is my child acting like a fool didn't i do everything i've sent her to private schools why is she running with this knucklehead how did i get here the bible says that job was minding his business his kids were throwing a party and something strange happens the angels start coming from heavenlies places and amongst the angels that come from heavenly places is one called satan now i'm going to mess up your notion of good bad right wrong because we blame satan for everything that covet 15 ain't nothing but the devil but see in job this is pre-zoroastrianism zoroastrianism is a really middle eastern religion and culture that transformed the decisions of the hebrews understanding of what good and evil was prior to interacting with this religious experience they believed satan was an angel of god he was literally a prosecutor he went around the test to see if you would stay committed to god he was not an enemy of god here in job satan is coming to god saying i've been around the world and god said what have you found he says i found that they busy oh yeah they busy doing this and doing that and god says yeah i'm still in control he said but i bet you there is one so holy that if you give me a chance i'll flip him god said who you talking about he said that one right there that one right there he's trying to do right he's trying to love you you have blessed him with everything but if you give me just a little time with him he'll turn on you you see sometimes hard times come for you because they know you trying to do the right thing have you ever noticed that when life is good and you in the groove all of a sudden it just shows up out of nowhere god is blessing you but do you know where the blessing comes from let me get just a few minutes with her to see if she will deny you when you take away the benefits will she praise you after ida will he praise you after an eight-month battle with covet got fired but will they curse you how did you get here and so many of us so many of us are good at religion until life comes crashing in on us we can praise god when we hit the lottery but what when your bills outstretch your check just give me 10 minutes and i guarantee you job will turn on you and so there is this anxiety and and there are a couple of things i want you to know about anxiety when life begins to come against you the first thing is you got to learn to stay calm and accept that you anxious you see religion will try to convince us that if you have faith you should never be nervous you should never fear and you should never have the feelings that come with human emotions because you have faith and if you have the faith of a muslim oh be quiet i got the faith of a mustard seed but my mama's on a ventilator quote me that man who says lord i believe help my unbelief can we just stop being fake faith and keep it real that sometimes we struggle with god because god is not doing exactly what we want when we want it that sometimes we're anxious about the interview we're nervous about the test results sometimes in our faith we're not quite sure what god is doing i've learned to accept when i'm anxious i'm nervous i'm not sure i'm ready to bust loose like chuck brown told me to sometimes you just got to accept i'm nervous pray for me i'm not quite sure don't judge my faith encourage me in it allow me to see that my humanness is not my downfall well the second thing we have to do is don't criticize yourself because you're nervous be okay with being okay more than that here's my favorite be okay with not being okay see when you okay with not always being okay you release yourself of the burden of being a robot i've been feeling some separation anxiety from my family for 10 years every birthday whether it's my son or my daughter or me for 10 years we have spent every birthday at benihana and last year we ordered benihana out and brought it to the house thursday was the first year that me and the babies weren't sitting together for my birthday and everybody called and said what you doing for your birthday and all i wanted to do was cry so around about three o'clock i sat down and i cried and at four o'clock i got up and dusted myself off at five o'clock the baby girl called and said happy birthday daddy at 5 30 the baby boy called and said happy birthday daddy but i could receive the call because i had let go of the cry that there are times where you got to be okay with not being okay [Applause] who told you you had to be perfect who told you had to be strong for everybody who told you that you could not allow god to minister to you because you were so busy trying to be strong that every now and then you got to be like our ancestors sometimes i feel like a motherless child [Applause] well the last thing is you got to be able to know you have anxiety and exist in it see i had a meeting at six o'clock i had a meeting about our website and all this stuff i couldn't say i can't do the meeting life can't stop because you stressed see when you learn how to handle your anxiety your anxiety won't handle you when you learn to walk through your grief your grief won't walk through you when you learn that god and a good therapist can take you over that mountain you'll walk in mental health in a way that you don't understand a peace that the world didn't give and the world can't take it away i love my therapist well job is there and and as he is engaged with his family god is having a conversation with satan and this refrain starts and in just eight minutes i'm going to give you what i believe god has given me to handle my anxiety that when i ask the existential questions of how did i get here these things help me walk with god the first thing that walks with god with me is the practice of patience listen to the story and how job is forced to practice patience while he was speaking another came and said your oxen and your donkeys are gone and while he was speaking another came said job your sheep and your servants are gone and while he was speaking another came and said your camels are gone and while he was speaking another said your sons and your daughters are gone and while he was still speaking another came and said your house is underwater and has lost value and while he was speaking another came and said your child is acting a fool and while he was still speaking another said you've been diagnosed with cancer and while he's still speaking another said your car broke down that god will sometimes overwhelm you to keep you from being overwhelmed by the world that sometimes god will shut you up from speaking because what you're going to say ain't from god that job for the first six issues never gets a chance to speak the bible says while one came and brought the news another came and brought the news and job has no choice but to listen have you ever thought you talk too much have you ever thought that you are so smart that sometimes you outsmart yourself has anybody ever talked their way out of a blessing has somebody ever came to you and said i want to bless you with this no i can't take that no i know i you know i i've been raising myself since i was would you just accept that i am been sent by god to love you and stop getting in the way god is trying to help you and you keep trying to tell god why you don't need help while he was speaking another came and while he was speaking another came and there are times when god will not let you open your mouth cause ain't nothing good gonna come out god will quiet you with the situations of life in order for you to seek god in the still places of the heart wow he was speaking this is the practice of patience and one of the things i'm learning as i get more mature is there are times where i just gotta sit still and let god do some things got to sit still and know that god is in control i want to send an email i want to send a text i want to make a phone call and god said just sit still your enemy will reveal themselves just sit still they gonna get moved out the way just sit still the battle ain't yours it's the lord just sit still the door is about to be opened anybody ever get a blessing from god and you did absolutely nothing to get it that's called grace followed by mercy that the lord has seen it and the lord has made it that god has already blessed you even before you know it's there while one was speaking the other spoke that is the practice of patience and every now and then god will steal you to keep you how to be patient well the second is the practice of perspective you see many of us stay in what we're in because our perspective has been trained to keep us there i had a beautiful conversation last night about generational curses i'm going to lose some of y'all you're going to think your pastor has no real reading of the bible but i have not read why the bible tells me that i serve a god who will curse my generations endlessly i will not serve a god who curses my generations and says why would i serve a god who will curse my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren i don't believe in generational curses i believe in generational practices and a practice i can change i believe we do what we do because we saw somebody else do it before us and i believe when we change the habit we change the outcome that when we seek god to teach us wisdom and how to move in a way that our ancestors didn't move then god will open us up to new possibilities i am the future dream of my parents and my grandparents i am the prayers of my great-grandma god made me to extend the lineage of my family god would not curse me nor my child because my god said i am to be the head not the tail the lender not the borrower god made me to be more than a conqueror god made me to see beyond my current situation god did not curse me i serve a god of blessings a god of abundance who would serve a god that would curse your generations that's a reading of the bible that is theologically incorrect his children have been killed but let me tell you about perspective sometimes you got to go through something so that the people around you can reveal who they really are sometimes god got to bring you through something so that the enemy will show himself in your house you know the conversation he had with his wife joe why don't you just curse god and die there's some people in your life that that's their prayer that they're around when things are good but when things go bad they will reveal who you really are who they really are you want to find out if somebody love you here's the test you ready you want to know how somebody loves you watch how they treat you when they're mad how they treat you when they're angry is how they really feel about you y'all be careful because if they love each other when things are good but when things go wrong they want to hit you upside the head or they want to curse you every time they get upset with you that ain't of god i know this is not popular i know you want to jump but i'm just trying to tell you how you got here and you can only get out of here when you change your perspective what does job say george says the lord gives and the lord takes away blessed be the name of the lord oh that's good religion right there that's how my love god in season i'm in love out of season i'm a love god when i'm up i'ma love god when i'm down i'm a love god when i got money i'm a love god when i'm broke i'm gonna love god when i'm starting i'ma love god when i come off the bench i'ma love god when i'm the here cheerleader i'ma love god when i'm the base whatever i'm going through i've learned the secret of being content i've learned what it's like to have much and i've learned what it's like to have little but my god will stay with me because he's alpha and omega beginning and the end feeds me when i'm lost take care of me when i fall my god is good all the time when i don't feel it he's good when i feel bad he's good when i'm sick he's good i love the lord he heard my cry it's all about your perspective well here's the last thing cause i'm almost over the six minutes well i'm already over the six minutes i'm at eight but if you give me two more i'll be quick get it quick so here's what he said the last thing he says he begins to worship and you can always recognize that the third practice is a practice of praise when you learn how to praise god no matter where you are no matter what's going on your praise will take you through some stuff that common sense can't take you through that medicine can't take you through that science can't take you through when you learn how to really praise god i mean that gut type of praise that praise that sweats your perm out that praise that makes your underarm work when you learn how to praise god the bible says he shaved his head he shaved his beard he got down on his knees and he said lord you're good i'll never curse you i've just learned to praise my way through my problems no matter what's going on i gotta praise i ain't got no money but i gotta praise cause when i gotta praise silver and gold have i none but if i got jesus i got a healer anybody gotta praise no matter what you're going through the lord will take you through cause god is good all the time all the time god is good i got a praise in my chemo i got a praise in the courtroom i got a praise at the doctor's office cause god is bigger than my problem and there's a praise that'll bring me through how you're gonna praise out your problem praise your way through your problem change your perspective give god the glory anybody know god is bigger than your situation how do i get here he brought me here he'll bring me out the doors of the church are open this is our invitation to discipleship and there'll be a code up on your screen [Music] we're inviting you [Music] to give yourself to christ today we're inviting you to say i love the lord beyond my current situation that if i'm honest i need god because by myself i'm a mess up that i can't fix it i don't understand it but god will bring me through [Music] i may not be a starter on the team but god will bring me through the problem of pain is the problem of existence so we're inviting you to a relationship if you're at home we're inviting you to be a part of who we are and what we do we are about to do amazing things because we're going to keep it 100. we're all struggling to get it right and we're struggling together and i'm going to invite any of you standing sitting out there if you're honest and you're struggling to get it right just to stand with me for a second if you're just trying to make sense out of life and it doesn't always make sense stand up for a second if if you're if you're honest and you got some stuff and you don't understand why you're going through it and it doesn't seem like anybody else is going through it and you're a good person and you don't deserve to go through it if you've ever had that thought stand up with me for a second if you said i've tried to do what i can for god and god has let me go through this and i don't want to go through this no more just stand with me for a second if you've ever had a pity party for yourself and god had to lift you up out of that thing and turn you around just stand up with me for a second if you know that you've not been the perfect christian but god has given you grace and mercy that left to your own devices you should be dead and gone anybody ever heard the siren drive by and you thought they were stopping at your house because you should have been arrested but god let them go by just stand with me for a second this is what christianity looks like this is what being saved looks like it looks like i fall short of the glory of god and yet god loves me anyway congratulations you recognize you're not worthy but god loves you anyway that there are possibilities for you to go through now if you know that there are possibilities just say yes you can point your phone at this screen from wherever you are you may not have a church home you may need to get baptized because you've accepted the lord jesus christ as your savior just point your phone something will pop up you want to recommit your life because you've fallen away from the faith a little bit that's okay i've fallen away from time to time too just point your phone and say yes this is our honest reflection that we need god today in a way we've never needed god before will you give your life to gay you may not have a church home and you're ready to say you know what i like first baptist doesn't expect me to be anything but myself i can be myself at first baptist just point your phone up there we're gonna be ourselves with each other sometimes we're gonna be nutty sometimes we're gonna be in our right mind sometimes we're going to act like we ain't got no sense but god is going to keep us anyway so just point your phone and say yes and trust god today anybody ready to say yes this is your opportunity the lord is good and worthy trust god today trust jesus today [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] let's pray god if someone struggling to make a decision now touch them in the innermost depths of themselves let them know that no matter what failures or mistakes they have made they are made in your image and likeness that they are beautiful they are beautiful however you constructed them call them to yourself i thank you lord for this moment of worship for a god of abraham isaac and jacob the god of ethiopia and ghana the god of brazil in cuba the god of detroit and oakland i thank you lord that you are good and worthy [Music] now lord make our worship
