good morning and thanks for waking up with us it's september 11 2001. it's going to be a beautiful day and we're off to a gorgeous morning start we'll get you that four day forecast in a moment first a quick check on early morning traffic [Music] i was in the middle of a promotional tour honestly um traveling city to city to talking about this special record called worship i was in chicago the night before i was going to stay there and go to atlanta the next day i changed my mind at the last minute i think i'm just going to fly home so i jumped on the plane came home [Music] all right we're getting some very disturbing breaking news at this hour a plane crash in manhattan the early reports are a plane has flown into the world trade center stay tuned we're gonna have team coverage as more information becomes available [Music] i remember just being in the car and debbie calling me and saying hey have you watched the news they say some some planes hit the hit the twin towers and i went that's weird you know i'm thinking a small plane an accident i get to my studio and turn the tv on and obviously what we all do and we're not even believing what you're seeing you're overwhelmed with emotion you just tried to process it all you know i just couldn't believe what was happening where our country's being attacked [Music] i just kept thinking the loss of life what's this going to do to our country and it really doesn't really dawn on me till that night that oh my goodness my record was released today on the day that we have been attacked the timing of this reimagining of this record coming out everything is going on now especially afghanistan gods and the timing of all things could be the right record for the right time again my heart is steadfast oh god my heart is steadfast i coming back [Music] well the worship album was recorded on june 1st and that whole record really was inspired out of a event that we would have every year in nashville i think a lot of us felt like we kind of lost our way and what are we doing here i mean are we focused on the main thing you know it felt like there was a lot of pride and there was a lot of who's number one who's selling the most records a little hobnobbing in the lobby the hotel and it just seemed to be like oh my gosh we're kind of looking like the world and we're supposed to be separate from the world and so somebody came up to me and had those concerns as well as i did and said what if we started off this gma week which happened every spring people come from all around the world why don't we start off the week with the worship service and do it at the ryman auditorium very famous place a lot of history there and maybe kind of set the tone [Music] i asked every artist to come and drop their ego at the door me included and be in the choir and we had 75 artists in the choir that night and so that night was a top five for me it was uh you know it was so the presence of god was so thick i you know it was like we all kind of felt like jesus come back you know it's kind of one of those things where it's just it was so overwhelming and and i did that for two three four years and that became the norm we're not going to do anything until we have this worship service that's when i began to wake up where i was woken up of hearing a voice going for such a time as this and it took the third time for me to agree to do it that third time was the voice was so loud you know and i thought man i better do this obedience is better than sacrifice so i took all these artists we flew everybody down in plains and went to lakeland florida a place called carpenter's home church had about 10 000 people and we recorded worship [Music] and i remember going back into the dressing room this big room all of us and we just we just wept we just cried [Music] what i remember about that was except when we were standing singing i was like on the ground the whole time just my forehead to the ground that's what i remember i think i stood for part of it but mostly i was [Music] just know anytime you go through a tragedy and you watch something unfold like 911 it makes you think about mortality makes you think about man i'm just i'm not guaranteeing another day live you know i just have this moment you know i can't change yesterday i don't know what tomorrow holds you find yourself living in the moment and and so i think when you when we started singing those songs we went on tour you know which is shortly after that and singing those songs they just wiped us out you know i mean breathe above all and let it rain what happened on the record with let it rain it's like oh my word then you realize that you're not the only one who feels that way you're looking out at thousands of people who probably had the same [Music] experience and maybe recalibration with their life after what happened so they're kind of pressing in more and so you know it just it was crazy when i went i mean crazy it was crazy good i mean the st you could just sense stuff was happening there's stuff happening in the audience that just would would blow your mind i remember us going back stage and we're all weeping and crying and i remember asking the question going or are members making the comment going whatever happened out there i sure hope that translates to a cd and and it did it seems unbelievable that smitty released this album on september 11th michael has shown us that worship in this time in our country can heal all wounds this cd has been my cd to go to when going through tough times bad times and really anytime it lifts my heart up and helps me to see jesus this cd brought me joy when i needed it the most with the recent events in new york and washington i have been feeling very down as many of us [Music] obviously the timing of both of these albums i think is pretty crazy when you think about it with the original album coming out on 9 11 2001 i think it was providential that god would use someone like michael w to release these songs and after all that we've been through in 2020 into this new year even i think it's again god's providence that this message is being reawakened and that it's being stirred up in the church and i think it's what we need well back in the fall of 20 um in the middle of a crazy year you can't help but think that the 20-year anniversary of 9 11 is coming up but also the 20th anniversary of the worship album and one day i just thought guys what if what if i just reimagined that record with an orchestra i thought well gosh this has never been done before you can go back and re-record the same record but you're just going to reimagine it from a different viewpoint in terms of it's not going to be banned it's not going to be drums and big guitars it's going to be a big orchestra there's something about orchestra and there's something about cinematic music that has always been moving to me something happens when there's this orchestration that sort of just you know puts makes the hair stand up on your neck you know and the music is moving you as well as you're singing these i'm coming back to the heart of worship it's all about you and it's like a double whammy you know it's like a it's it is powerful and so i came here at studio and put on my cinematic hat and i think the first thing that i actually tried to do was the heart of worship which was the matte redmond song and so i started pulling up all my orchestra templates on my computer and oh my gosh i just i was elevating off of my chair and i'm going i think this can work and then i just did the next song did draw me closer i did above all and it never failed you know i never hit a brick wall when i started to sort of put my all my parts down when i heard my head i hand that off to david hamilton who's my amazing orchestrator he takes what i come up with and he sort of embellishes and makes it bigger than he could ever dream or imagine and i started listening to the mock-ups in my car and i just kept crying and then i would listen to the same thing a week later and i'll cry again i think if it continues to move me like that i think it's going to move other people the same way and i think in lieu of everything that's going on now especially afghanistan it just brings everything up about ten notches i mean this is this is an emergency and what do you do in an emergency you get with it you want to see the heavens move because we can't solve this problem but he can but again the music the prayers may it be the sweet incense that just rises up and god answers and i believe it can happen i can't believe 20 years have passed it feels like a lifetime and i just love that he feels compelled and led to redo this project i mean to me there's just such a beautiful elegance and the sort of new and improved dynamics and to me the way that the songs are being um played sung executed it just i don't know it just feels like a fine wine that has aged well wales flood our streets like you flooded azusa then our churches follow their faces and repentance for that time of refreshing will come oh god christ jesus be lifted up in our schools in our that i've been in all over the world last weekend leading worship i sang heart of worship in a spontaneous moment you know i would say that song in particular has been a true north i think for so many worship leaders and worshipers like in the midst of all of the things that we make worship about to come back to that one place of it's all about you it's not about me it's about i'm coming back to what really matters it's pretty powerful so it's a great reminder i think a worship song it's a total focus it's a total vertical focus i think that's what's different i mean and i love this because we're this is we're meant for community and i love singing love songs and i love the place in this world i mean that you know that hundreds who knows maybe thousands of people getting having to encounter with god and with jesus through that song secret ambition you know all those are that's great but there's something when you do this that it's just to surrender you know always reiterate to people guys worship is not just what happens on a sunday morning it's a lifestyle so to me singing the worship song and loving and being kind to somebody at the supermarket they gotta line up they gotta be we gotta be dialed in and we have to be we have to reflect who he is and he's good and he's kind and he's loving and that we have to be that way with our community and with people that we encounter every day a worship song helps us to experience the glory of god and that puts everything in its right place you know we're filled i mean we're meant to be filled to our greatest capacity of joy and love and possibility and hope just ah you know and we just live all of us in a culture that's like have i checked off the boxes have i done this am i enough and you know those questions will never be answered they never stop it's just like the chatter but when when the focus is like oh god there's no question about that all the boxes are checked no everybody no matter your walk of life every one of us is wired somewhere inside to be filled by worship the whole thing of being a christ father is denying yourself you know and surrendering yourself to hello the guy upstairs when you grow in your faith you start to realize what golly what i mean what he's done for you and when you start to like really grasp that on a deep level [Music] how can you not respond to that [Music] piano to my 20 students you know as a teenager and now to be here alongside michael w smith singing more love more power it's just a surreal thing so yeah it means something very special [Music] in regards to guests i you know that was a big that was a big one for me because i didn't want it to be i didn't want to be artist driven i didn't want to be personality driven i didn't even want to introduce anybody you know i wanted to truly be a worship service and it wasn't going to be oh my gosh here comes somebody it was a big decision i thought of three people and i thought of amy grant who is my close comrade and i thought about august day that we together really in terms of recording we've never re recorded that together never the 38 39 years that we've known each other matt redmond why not invite the guy who wrote the heart of worship which is one of my favorite worship songs of all time and then i guess you call him the new kid on the block it's hard and what a voice what a voice and more love more power especially when we modulate a step and a half down i knew that it was going to soar [Music] i told michael w smith when i actually was talking to him on the phone i said i don't know why you chose me but i've learned not to ask too many questions so i'm just gonna show up i'm excited and it's just truly a great honor and not just the man himself but matt redmond amy grant i'm just so thrilled to to be a part and i know how special this is and how much it means to michael so to be invited into something so close to his heart means the world to me what a year it's been a crazy season so much we don't understand [Music] questions seem to way outnumber the answers but we have to remember [Music] about the time you thought it was all over just read the book god came to the rescue and we're still here [Music] [Applause] even in the valley he's working it for our good he's still making a way and all the promises of god are true beyond a shadow of a doubt [Music] so we're in despair and there's fear help is on the way [Music] so we keep we keep singing his praises because nothing's going to shut this man down and nothing's going to shut the the whole world gets to sing let it rain open the floodgates of heaven let your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven let that happen in afghanistan in pakistan in nigeria in haiti and all around the world and i think when the people of god go to that level of intercession that's what god's looking for that's when i think you'll start to see things change and so that's my hope and dream that this project can be a part of that outpouring and that outcry [Music] well i certainly won't forget this night may the lord bless you keep you make his face shine a bit and be
