Baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in English to find out more about our work in Israel please visit us on the web at love Israel you are G that's one word love Israel o RG now here's Baruch with today's lesson God is indeed a God of Revelation and we're going to see without any uncertainty in this study that God is moving for the purpose of revelation in egypt revelation for the hebrews and revelation for pharaoh the egyptians including his servants those wise men who are in bondage to to the occult and those other nations language and tribes who have come down to egypt because of the prosperity there as i've said many times that Egypt is a type of of microcosm for the world I've shared with you also that biblically when we see Egypt we should think of the world what we see taking place there is really a message for the state the spiritual condition of the world well we're going to continue in Exodus chapter 10 tonight with a very significant I spoken about how some plagues are unique and this one is very significant it is significant and how it came about we also find it was significant and how it spoke to the people had in my opinion one of the most spiritual messages attached to it I'm speaking about macaque Koscheck that is the plague of darkness so look with me in the book of Exodus chapter 10 and we're going to begin where we left off last week in verse 21 a shorter passage and we'll get through this as quick as we can verse 21 and the Lord said to Moses now I've been shared this for a while but everything and I want to emphasize everything that mâche and our own are doing they are doing not of their own initiative but they're doing that based upon here this based upon the revelation of God not too long ago I heard a message by someone I have the utmost respect for someone who has been a a great influence in my life and I was so disappointed because he was talking about about Moses and when Moses did something when he stood up to defend his fellow Jew and we know what happened because of that and that he slayed an Egyptian he fled for his life now I look at the scripture and I see God looking at that that sacrifice his willing to forego everything a life of ease in the palace of Pharaoh and his purpose to defend the Hebrews never forgetting who he is he's a Hebrew not an Egyptian and I believe that that act was was one of the acts that that motivated God at least from a revelation standpoint for us the reader to see that God was affirming that I heard this message where we're all the the preacher did was put down Moses for acting in that way now we need to be very careful and how we interpret Richard and we see once more that what Moses is doing he's doing it out of the revelation of God and those things that he did previously it was because of the righteous influence of his mother he never forgot his heritage and heritage it's not just looking in the past but heritage is also looking to the future and this is what is a driving force of faithfulness for Moses so notice what it says here and it begins abruptly notice we have a different type of of situation normally we have Moses getting instructions being told what to do taking those instructions to Pharaoh Pharaoh rejecting them and then Moses going out and bringing the plague and then Pharaoh coming in and and repenting halfway just in words and then rebelling against his repentance and not agreeing with what he said but this is different as I said there's much significance God simply speaks to Moses and he says immediately he says stretch forth your hand unto the heavens and it shall come about Osia darkness upon the land of Egypt and notice what it says and I want to emphasize this it says via mesh motion now this word via mesh it means to be felt it is an experience or word it's feeling something being able to touch and sense now if we were to just turn off all the lights we can can't see with their eyes that we're in darkness the things just turn black we know that but a blind person for example whether the lights go on and off whether they're in sunlight or whether they're in the middle of the night they can't see that simply because of change they don't have the sense in order to discern that but we're not talking about a normal darkness notice what the scripture says and this is emphatic it's emphasized in the texts that this darkness it can be felt that is not normal darkness something else is going on here now usually darkness signifies a lack of Revelation a absence of illumination a rejection of truth and that certainly can describe Pharaoh and the rest of Egypt so the Lord says to Moses stretch forth your hand upon the heavens this is significant because this is coming about through a heavenly means and it shall become darkness upon the land of Egypt a darkness that can be felt verse 22 Moses did just that Moses stretched forth his hand unto the heavens and it came about and those there's a different phrase we see that first word ohshit darkness but there's another word there and that is a word a fella a fella comes from this same it's a synonym for darkness but but it is to help us understand something a darkness that can be felt is a darkness which is an a Fela ho shik a Fela a darkness that can be felt so now God in two different ways has told us it's not just an issue of there being an absence of light no this darkness is unique it can be felt and it has a different description a different name and name is important because it signifies character nature type and therefore it's been given a different name in order to show that it's a different type of darkness entirely look again and Moses stretched forth his hand unto the heavens and it came about a ho shik a fella a unique darkness a darkness that can be felt in all the land of Egypt and then it says shallow you mean three days now I've read this obviously in preparation and we're going to see in the middle of the next verse we're going to see that same phrase shallow you mean three days now it's repeated because when things are repeated in the scripture it's a way of saying pay attention it is the scriptural means to capture our attention to say this has significance it's not four days it's not two days it's not ten days it's three and three is a a number of testing it's a number of revealing something so we find here that that Pharaoh in one sense is going to be uniquely and significantly tested with this darkness now let me pause for a moment and say something about gay he known gay he know more Hades let me translate both the Hebrew and the Greek get a gnome and is Hebrew Hades is Greek what am i speaking about you probably already know that and that is hell and there's two primary elements of hell first of all darkness the second is torment usually that torment is is seen through a burning a fire and it's supernatural is it literal fire yes it is does it have a supernatural aspect yes it does so if you ask me do I believe literally in a Hell a burning fiery hell yes I do and let me share with you people who deny that they have a spiritual problem when we lessen the the awfulness of hell it is playing into the purposes the mindset the deceit the lies of the enemy so let me just be very very clear to you if you say well you know I just believe when you're dead you're dead I don't believe in this hell oh I believe in heaven but I really don't believe in that hell I think that's all all symbolic metaphorical language shouldn't be be taken literally literally it is just like a burning spiritually because you're absent you're separated from God and you have maybe great regret but it's not a physical no it is a physical pain which your soul can fear fill and it is just as painful more painful than literally being burnt with fire it is a spiritual burning but fire is still part of so I take it very very literal and you should as well because notice what the scripture saying it's speaking about Koscheck hoshi darkness is a component of hell and what's being emphasized twice is that it can be felt now notice what else it says that there's going to be darkness this this darkness that can be felt in all the land of Egypt for three days that means take notice of that this is for the purpose of revealing teaching us something now look at verse 23 and they will not be able to see a man his brother so it will not be seen by a man his brother meaning that you can be sitting in a home in the same room being very close having a conversation and when this plague Makati OSHA hits you will not be able to see that person in fact when we read it notice what it says low growl ooh ish at a leaf they will not be able to see a man his brother Balogh Camus ich meet a tough and a man they will not be able to means it's in the plural but it says a man meaning this is true for everyone its collective that's what the uniqueness of the Hebrew language is saint-lo Camus is Mitaka Tov a individual every individual if they're sitting they can't get up now elsewhere we find in Hazael we find that if one is standing they can't sit down but the point is and what's emphasizes they can't rise up now this has a spiritual application I've shared many times that the call of God upon someone's life is an upward call we when we walk in obedience we're moving up spiritually so that we can have a right perspective in this darkness with this lack of illumination you can't rise up you can't see things as you should you can't carry out the call you are paralyzed you are stuck in the same place and it says that this is gonna happen again look at the middle verse 23 shallow you mean so what is it saying the darkness is going to be in another way that it's translated into English and I think this is fine a thick darkness that's what it implies it can be felt and it's so thick that it it petrifies now not just in fear that's one thing it's petrifying but it's also like petrified wood it is just solid you can not move if you're sitting you can't stand up if your hands are like this you can't move them you are paralyzed frozen in that time when the plague Dusit you're paralyzed and that takes place for three days now when we look at it what it's saying is you can't see one another and the implication because of this darkness is so thick just like it's hard to hear underwater well because of that it's gonna be hard to hear in fact impossible to hear you're gonna think if you were there when that plague head you're to think that you're in another another domain another sphere because everything's dark no light no sound no communication you are going to be alone and just imagine this no ability to drink to eat to move to do anything and you don't know is this gonna last a moment a minute an hour a day you have no idea and imagine how frightful it is when one hour goes 2 to 2 hours goes to 6 6 goes to 12 a full day passes another you can't check your watch you don't know what's going on and it's a hint to eternity now it doesn't have that destructive element what am i speaking about that that fire that torture but it's also extremely extremely fearful and uncomfortable that you can not move but notice the end of verse 23 and it says ooh Hoban Israel hyah or bade my show Moshe chef Tom which means and to all the children of Israel hyah or there was light BAE Moshe volton in their dwelling place and where's that Goshen now what we find here is that many times we have seen how God has made a distinction between the Egyptians and the Hebrews and they all could see this but not this time no the only ones who could see the difference were the children of Israel now this in my opinion this plague of darkness had great revelation why those what it says the children of Israel had light in their dwelling places God gave them illumination imagine this all of Egypt blackness you couldn't walk in there you couldn't have anything to do with the Egyptians in all the children of Israel they were restricted to Goshen during this plague they had light in their dwelling place now some of the commentators they speak that for these three days of this plague in most see three days and three nights three full days 24 hour periods time three that Israel had light that entire time the Sun didn't set it was light why well it says and to all the children of Israel there was light when the implication is these three days in their dwelling places verse 24 most scholars cease verse 24 is at the end of this plank now again notice the uniqueness normally Pharaoh is given a choice an opportunity to obey and avoid the plague not here if we take it literally Farrell was given no advance warning this happened and he knew he knew an instant this is this god of the Hebrews I mean only he could make an event like this so it says and Pharaoh verse 24 and Pharaoh called to Moses and he said come now he called to Moses but we find that that it's collective because he says the who which could mean go so in this sense he says to Moses these calls and some sense sends a message to Moses witches go serve the Lord but he says something only your flocks and your cattle you suck that is that that they need to be withheld they need to remain here now it's a unique word for that rendering but that's the intent and I don't want to go into a great deal about that word but it means here that they are going to not be able to go with you now this shows another element of Pharaoh's disobedience rebellious nough stat arrow and here's the key he does not want God's will to be done this is a big deal why because God has told Moses Moses has told Pharaoh that we need to go three days into the wilderness so that we can worship the Lord and worship implies sacrifice it implies going before God not empty-handed but giving to him making an offering and in that day cattle livestock it was finances it had a value it had a great significance in the financial well-being of each and every family so Pharaoh saying alright you go now he says you could worship earlier but you can't go in the wilderness but you can offer up to the Lord here Moses says no that won't make the the fulfillment of God's command so now Pharaoh changes it he says you can go but you really can't worship God because I'm not letting you take any of your flock or your candles cattle but he says but your children they can go with you now this is interesting some of the rabbinical scholars they point out that usually we see this.even the Torah that that children belonged to their masters meaning when someone is set forth a slave is set free after he fulfills his obligation he goes forth but normally the children belong to the household so Farrell here is making a concession he's saying you know that even your children can go with you all the people but the cattle the flux they have to stay now this is significant because here's what we see here's this this spirit of Pharaoh he does not want God to be worshipped one say it again he does not want God to be worshipped this is a satanic spirit what Satan hates is for the Lord God of Israel to be worshipped him to be worship and His only begotten Son Messiah sure for him to be worshipped why he wants that and he's keeping this life stocked these flocks because they are related to a biblical a God appointed worship so notice the response of Moses look at verse 25 and Moses says also you will give into our hand he says no also these you must give into our hand as sacrifices and burnt offerings that we may do to the Lord our God now this word we may do it's a relevant reference to worship you have to put them into our hand in order that we might do to the Lord our God the worship that he requires verse 26 also our livestock will go with us and not one Parsa Parsa as a hoof not one hoof is going to remain or from them we will take here it is a change not that we might do but that we might worship the Lord our God now the last part of verse 26 is very important the context is clear Moses says we need to do as our Lord God has required us worship is doing it's not a state of being it is a state of doing it is active secondly he says different words from the word law so to do to live ode to serve to worship and notice the last part of this verse very important it says vow and a new low need Magna vote attetion add bow a new Shama which means and we will not know how we should worship or what we should do either way can be translated my is usually what what we shall do but it can also mean how we should worship the Lord until we come there now this is important because it reveals a very important part of worship and that is being flexible available open to change now we see this earlier on in the book of Genesis with a key that get Scott the offering the binding of issac remember Abraham went there to worship to offer a burnt offering and as he was about to finish preparing it's got to be that burnt offering what happened revelation the angel spoke to Abraham and what I want to share with you is this so frequently God in the spirit of worship when we have a plan and we want to serve him we want to do his will we think we note we come before it we're moving along we're doing it and God will make a change and speaking the Word of God putting God's truth before others is also part of the worship experience and that's why I think it's very important to study the texts prayerfully go over the text not just study but prepare what you're going to say but also when you teach be open be available be flexible for God to make changes for the Holy Spirit to take and go the direction that God wants to go now I see great great great great great significance and what he says banana loan ADA Manav owed Hashem I'd bought a new Shama for we will not know what we are to do that is how we're supposed to worship the Lord until we come there verse 27 now when Pharaoh heard and here's the key some people take verse 27 in a vacuum that everything that we've read the context they just ignore and they want to translate it this way look at verse 27 and the Lord strengthened the heart of Pharaoh and he did not want to send them forth people say well there it is God caused Pharaoh's heart to be strong in his will that is Pharaohs will not God's will so that he would not send forth of people Pharaoh is just a pawn of God God caused Pharaoh to be disobedience now here's a problem when you think God has called cause someone to be disobedient you are theologically confused I want to say that very firmly if your theology says that God has caused someone to disobey disobey that's a sin if you believe that God is part of causing someone to sin you are theologically confuse you had not read properly enough scripture what we find here is this this statement let's look at again it says and the Lord strengthen the heart of Pharaoh and he did not want to send them forth but the question is how did God strengthen Pharaoh's heart did he just supernaturally hocus-pocus spirituality caused Pharaoh's heart to be strong in a vacuum no that is not what the text is teaching how God made Pharaoh's heart to be stronger and that's where we see a progression is that Pharaoh was confronted with the will of God that's what happens and when Pharaoh heard what Moses said had to happen that revelation that no we are not going to go out we will only go with all of our people and all of our flock all of our cattle only then will we go forth and when Pharaoh heard the terms of God led worship and that Moses was open to whatever whatever changed God was going to make Moses wanted to prepare the people to be worshipping God properly even at that last moment in the midst of it be open for change when Pharaoh heard that this is what God required this was the terms nope he became strong in his own opinion but don't think in a moment that God made Pharaoh to behave in this way no when Pharaoh heard how worship should be done he rejected that and that costs so why does they the Lord did it as I've said over and over and over and over it refers to a spiritual law God put that law in force he made it when we reject the halation of God when we here this is the way that God wants it done we say oh I'm not gonna do that God will strengthen our heart he will dull our heart he will harden a heart that's what the scripture is revealing not that God made Pharaoh to be disobedient look now to verse 28 and Pharaoh said to him go from me and guard yourself for you will not again see my face what Pharaoh says here's the negotiations are over I am never going to ever discuss this issue with you again over done I'm not entertaining you and he gives a threat look again verse 28 and though and Pharaoh said to him that is to Moses go from me guard yourself you will not continue meaning not again see my face for and this is the threat in the day did you see my face you will die so he's saying if you come back to me Moses if you want to continue this negotiation you are going to die Pharaoh has brought it to an inn he is totally committed to what he wants he is not willing to compromise anymore and let's guess what God never was it's God ways or it's no way meaning your way will not reach any conclusion but disaster verse 29 and Moses spoke fuss and he's responding back to Pharaoh Moses said thus you have spoken the word is Ken Ken means yes in this sense it means right thus yes you have spoken this it's right that you have said this because no longer again I will not any longer see your face now this brings things to conclusion because we have concluded nine of the plates we're only waiting for that last one and that is the plague of the firstborn the negotiations are over God is going to move to bring about death death of the firstborn and let me say that that plague is the most important it is the one that teaches us so much about the nature of God God's provision what he requires and how God brings about and here's a very important statement this teaches us about Redemption how God moves and what he requires for redemption to be made so this next chapter when we move into chapter 11 we see very very carefully very importantly in the biblical text in chapter 11 this Proclamation in preparation for Passover the proclamation of the plague of their firstborn well we'll look at that next week when we continue on in our study but until then may God
