[Music] Shalom and welcome to via after Israel a Hebrew phrase which means you shall love Israel we hope you'll stay with us for the next 30 minutes as our teacher dr. Baruch shares his expose Ettore teaching from the Bible dr. Baruch is the senior lecturer at the Sarah Avraham Institute based in Israel although all courses are taught in Hebrew at the Institute dr. Baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in English to find out more about our work in Israel please visit us on the web at love Israel you are G that's one word love Israel Oh our G now here's Baruch with today's lesson now God is a God who moves in his people's life and he's always moving in order that his goodness can be seen in your life and through your life that you might be a blessing to others but one of the things we learn is this when we choose unwisely when we walk in disobedience when we choose our will following the desires of not a heart that's been prepared by God but a heart that is deceitful among all things we know that that we find ourselves in places of difficulty and that's exactly where the children of Israel are in bondage and Egypt because they walked according to their own ways they did what they thought was right in their own eyes so with that said take out your Bible and look with me to the book of Exodus in chapter 7 now in this seventh chapter we're going to learn an important principle and that is what happens to an individual no matter who it is what happens to an individual that does not respond to God's revelation God is a generous God God is a God who desires to be seen and to be a god of leadership in a person's life but here's the key the question is this when God reveals himself when he makes his presence known when he reveals his truth are we wise enough are we humble enough are we submissive enough to say yes to his revelation if we are we're going to see that it has a positive effect it will bring about a change in who we are it will bring about a new condition but when we rebel against God's revelation rejected it also will bring about a change a negative change in our life and that is one of the foundational truths that this passage is going to teach us tonight so let's begin Exodus chapter 7 look with me to verse 1 we read here and Hashem said to Moses see I have placed you now this is a word not antica from the word latet or in the tongue it's to give to set it's oftentimes to put something in a particular location for a particular purpose and this is exactly what God is doing with Moses and notice the next word we see here the next word is the word Elohim which is God now that term Elohim many other places in the scripture we can see being understood as God but manifesting God as judge now it's not the word show FET normally translated judge but this term Elohim oftentimes scripturally is is relating to the God who set things order so we see these two words the word in the Todd when he says I am setting you and also the term Elohim referring to God moving in order to bring about his purpose so Moses is being positioned given over the word latet is to give so God is giving Moses and the key here is to Pharaoh as how here's the message he's doing so as a judge now the term is Elohim but in this sense it's as Pharaoh's judge Moses is going to give to Pharaoh truth judgment and Pharaoh's going to have to make a decision what he's going to do with it now I realize most English Bibles they will say I am setting you as or like but that word as and like is not in the Hebrew text and then he goes on and says in this passage let's look at it all see I am setting you a judge to Pharaoh and Aaron your brother will be your prophet now what does a prophet do speaks forth for God so Moses is assuming the role of judge or Elohim as God in this scenario and Aaron his brother is the Prophet now why is that well remember the objection that Moses had last week at the end of chapter 6 Moses is speaking and what is he saying he says I an uncircumcised in lips and because I don't speak well Pharaoh's not going to respond so God reminds him that his brother Aaron is there to be the spokesman for him look at verse 2 and you will speak at Cole at Cole it is the the word at points out the definite article and the definite article here is understood as a word all we could say the all so it's being emphatically revealed so Dodd is very clear in his terms that he's using he says you will speak all absolutely everything what I command you and Aaron your brother he will speak to Farrell now notice something the word command we need to realize that frequently when God speaks he speaks in the form of Commandments that's his nature that's how God interacts most often with his people through commands and if we're not willing to receive those commands well let me tell you when we reject the commandments of God we are foolish because the term commandment won't go into all of it but it's related to bringing together so when we reject the commandments of God and we say no I'll do it my way I think I know what is best for me and I'm gonna reject revelation what we're saying is God I don't want a relationship with you I don't want to be together with you I want to go it alone my way my will for my purposes a foolish decision that leads to disaster oftentimes eternal disaster so verse 2 he says you God speaking to Moshe Rabbeinu Moses you speak all what I will command you and Aaron your brother will speak to Pharaoh and what happens and he will send the children of Israel from his land now God is promising that see Moses at the end of last week study at the end of chapter 6 Moses says what well let's go back and look at it he says very clearly that Pharaoh will not listen they they F yesh ma a lie far oh how Will Ferrel listen and this has the implication of obedience he says I'm the wrong man Pharaoh isn't going to listen to me he's not going to obey what God is saying is yes he will but be careful God has already said we've encountered it at least twice where God has said Pharaoh will do something not let my people go but as we learned send forth the children of Israel but he's not going to do it immediately and there's a reason for that and that is that Pharaoh is a rebellious man he time and time again rejects God's revelation even though he knows it's truth even though he knows what is righteous and what is unrighteous and here's the problem Pharaoh chooses that which is unrighteous and he does so with knowledge not because he doesn't know he doesn't understand he's never heard God hasn't communicated to him we're gonna see that over and over and over God communicates to Pharaoh and he reveals himself he gives him much revelation Pharaoh learns and we'll see this in the weeks to come much spiritual truth the problem is that he rejects it and here's what we need to learn when when when a person doesn't matter who it is when a person rejects spiritual truth it has an outcome in him it changes him in a most negative way look now to 2 verse 2 again they she look edie Bonet smell may art so and he will send the children of Israel from his Lane that's going to happen but notice he also tell us that it's not going to be immediate look now to verse 3 God is speaking still and he says Vani akshay at lave pearl he says and I will harden the heart of Pharaoh now we're getting into a very important theological area and we need to understand it correctly now the reason why I'm sharing it very slow now is because we need to learn not just what the scripture says but how we arrive at a proper understanding of what the scripture says there are rules there are laws of biblical interpretation and when we look at this we can't just take this in a vacuum we need to understand how the scripture is put together why one thing is said prior to the next and what is the purpose of that following statement because when we look in verse 3 it doesn't end with the statement and I will hardened the heart of Pharaoh period is that what it says no it goes on there's a conjunction the term Vey which means an and what we need to and must understand is the first half of verse 3 works together with the second half and if we fail and we do what oftentimes those of reformed theology those that embrace Calvinism which I strongly believe is a false teaching when you embrace that you're doing so with faulty methodology of interpreting the scripture because they want to believe this that God sovereign yes he is suffering and that God who is sovereign just reaches in because he needs ferrell to have a hard heart so God hardens Pharaoh's hearts and doesn't say that it does but not in the way that I just described not in the way that they teach what causes Pharaoh's heart to be heart people say God it says it right here God hardened his heart yes but how did he do it and what was the circumstance for got hardened Pharaoh's heart look at all the verse verse 3 and I will harden the heart of Pharaoh and and here's the key I will multiply my signs and my the word is mofette which is a miraculous a wonder a supernatural event so he says I'm going to do signs and wonders I'm going to multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt see what proper biblical interpretation demands is that we see a relationship between the first half of verse 3 and the second half how is God going to harden Pharaoh's heart it's going to be done through these signs and wonders what are these signs and wonders God's revelation remember what what Pharaoh is going to say he says who is the Lord that I should obey him and send forth the children of Israel he says I don't know who yes so God's going to introduce himself to Pharaoh through these signs and wonders and Pharaohs going to come to the realization God is we're going to see that he proclaims that and not just proclaims that God is but that he's righteous and that Pharaoh is a sinner that he is unrighteous he's going to seek forgiveness all of this is going to to come about but what Pharaoh does is this that he exploits the fir goodness of God and he rejects the will of God and what happens every time he does that every time God manifests himself his truth to Farrell Farrell rejects it and what happens we're gonna find that the scripture says and thus Pharaoh's heart became heavy or hard and will see the various terms that are used but verse 3 is such an important verse for helping us to understand how God and why God hardens Pharaoh's heart it's not in a vacuum God just doesn't reach down without any circumstances and hardens Pharaoh's heart like so many people falsely teach look now to verse 4 God is speaking again to Moses and to to Aaron and he says and he will not listen unto you who's that Farrell Farrell will not listen and that word can have a sense of obey or respond properly so God says and this is prophecy he says Pharaoh is not going to respond he's not going to listen to what you both say and what's gotta to go to do he says vain atonte same word that God used earlier about Moses as God's putting Moses as Pharaoh's judge he says here and I will set my hand in Egypt now hand is synonymous with power and authority so what is God gonna do well God is suffering and he is going to use Pharaoh's disobedience he's not the cause of it he's going to use that in order to manifest throughout Egypt God's power and God's sovereignty his authority so that the Egyptians see that there's going to be an air of ruff that is a mixed multitude that is going to respond so God can use Pharaoh's disobedience for is good but here again God is not causing it in a vacuum we'll see this as we go through the next several chapters in the weeks to come look again at verse four and Pharaoh he will not listen unto you and I will set my hand in Egypt and I will bring forth my armies now we learned who the armies are they are the children of Israel and this mixed multitude of Gentiles who join with the children of Israel now all the children of Israel know this is very important now we don't know the exact number but Judaism teaches and I'm speaking about the Talmud it uses a phrase that will come across when we get later on into the the book of Exodus deeper we'll see that it uses a term that can refer to 20% Judaism one view of it within the Talmud is that only 20% of the Hebrews responded and kept the Passover and came out of Egypt this is important the vast majority 80 rejected God's revelation but we see that there was a mixed multitude of Gentiles of different languages different races different ethnic groups different places that join together with Israel that 20% and came out and they became the congregation of the Lord so look again he says second part of verse 4 they hold SETI at sieve otai and I will bring forth my armies my people the children of Israel from the land of Egypt and how will he do it bish fatigue Adaline with great judgments now here's the point that needs to be seen I've said many times to you that there is a connection between judgment and the establishment of the kingdom of God it's only because of God's judgment that the kingdom of God will be brought about and in that same way we're seeing something now this personifies what we're studying is a paradigm for understanding a very important term gula Redemption Redemption is an accounting term but it also has Kingdom implications so the kingdom is going to come about through great judgment that's what God's gonna do he's gonna place judgment that mighty hand of his he's gonna stretch out in Egypt so we need to remember that term Shiva team you Dolan great judgments verse 5 they yet o mitzrayim kee ani hashem and egypt they will no here's the important point it's not that egypt which is going to suffer destruction through god's judgment it is not as though they didn't know what they needed to do no destruction came because of rejection very important it came because for the most part Egypt would not respond to the truth of God the power of God the presence of God the purposes of God that he was manifesting in Egypt how did he do it by stretching forth his power his hand his authority so look again at verse 5 and the Egyptians they will know that I the LORD when I stretched forth my hand upon Egypt and I will bring forth this is important term over and over gaudy we saw that at the conclusion of last week study this term hood city he will bring forth so God is promising and Egypt is going to learn and understand the power of the authority of God when he brings forth the children of Israel from their mitts verse 6 and Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD commanded then yes they did now we need to pause because verse 6 is an important verse it speaks about the obedience of Moses and Pharaoh and notice what it says via us Moshe avi our own now that is not correct Hebrew grammar it should be vaya su not vyas what's the difference one is plural one is siculus if the subject is mâche they are owned it should be plural there's two of them so it should say veis ooh but it doesn't via ass what's the difference the Singler verb is used here in that form to show unity that Moses and Aaron are acting together as one in unity as one obedient a team so it says and Moses and Aaron did taw share just as the LORD commanded them can I sue yes they did this time it's in the plural it's to emphasize their obedience verse 7 and Moses was 80 years old and Aaron was 83 years old when they spoke to Pharaoh now again we saw this last week Aaron's older he should have been mentioned first but he isn't he's mentioned second and why is that important it's to emphasize the role of Moses and that's because Moses is a typology for the Messiah so we read once more verse seven and Moses was 80 years old 80 passing to do with that number eight which is a redemptive number a kingdom number a number of newness the number 83 has to do with 80 those same things that we saw three is revealing so what God wanting to do through Moses and Aaron is to reveal his redemptive purposes his kingdom purposes there's new change that he's bringing into the world through Benet you spell the children of Israel verse verse 8 and the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron saying for you shall speak or excuse me for Pharaoh will speak unto you saying so God's revealing and all of this this prophecy that God is giving to Moses and Aaron is to teach them something that God's got this under control he knows everything nothing's a surprise for him and we need to remember that what God commands us to do he's got it under control don't worry about the results don't worry about how it may seem in our eyes just be obedient just do what God has commanded look again verse 8 and the Lord said to Moses and to Aaron saying verse 9 for Farrell will speak unto you saying give you give miracle now it's very important new Lechem mofette he's saying you do a miracle now this is important because Pharaoh is asking it's as he's saying show me this power of God I don't know God so show me you guys show me the power of God now why is this verse so important because God it's foundational God is responding Pharaoh you want to know a miracle you want to see the supernatural you want to see the miraculous power of God God's going to do it and he's going to do it through Moses and Aaron and you shall say to Aaron when Pharaoh asked this he's speaking now to Moses and you shall say to Aaron take your staff and cast it before Pharaoh and it will become a serpent now it's not the word Nahash which is the normal word for snake so we're Tunney and some scholars will point out that this is maybe a larger type of sea creature it can be used for an alligator or a crocodile so it may not just be a a snake in the sense of what we think but a a creature or a larger one one that is much more fearful so what God is doing here by saying this is what I want you to do it is to show the power of God and also it comes many of the Hebrew scholars see this as a threatening of Pharaoh meaning if you disobey look at the consequences now this word is also used in regard to hasatan Satan and what it shows is this if you disobey if you do not respond to the Word of God see that's what we should do obey his word it is in maturity when we demand a sign now a sign for the purpose of confirming this is God like Joshua did or like Gideon did not a bad thing we want to be sure when the scripture tests test the spirits if we're wanting discernment to know this is God that's acceptable but here I believe the fact that a Thanh Nien is manifested chose a warning that feral is is doubting when he should be obedient but nevertheless he says you take that staff and you cast it before feral interesting that term before Pharaoh and it will become this this Thanh Nien this serpent verse 10 and Moses and Aaron came once more a singular verb we would think would be in the plural but it's a show unity between them Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh via su can and they did thusly now what I like about this is that we're seeing over and over the obedience of Moses and Aaron to God's call upon their life what are they doing here's an important truth they are demonstrating their trust in God and let me encourage you that that's what God wants from you and what he wants from me that we demonstrate that we trust God it is a an act of faithfulness we hear the instructions of God and we carry them out now notice we go to where we were learning from some 86 tonight we see that same thing God teach me your way that I may what that I might walk in your truth so we want God to teach us to show us his truth so it can affect our lifestyle when the word walk appears it's a word of lifestyle of behavior and then Moses and Aaron are demonstrating that proper walk look again at verse 10 Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh and they did thusly they obeyed just as the LORD commanded and Aaron cast his staff before Pharaoh and before his servants and it became a ton mean it became this servant the serpent now realized something it wasn't just feral now his servants were there now part of these servants have to do with advising Pharaoh giving him insight Council in order to make the right decisions so the purpose of that is that Pharaoh you know God is not setting up Pharaoh to fall that's not God's heart God hasn't changed Pharaoh's heart so that he would be disobedient so that God can punish him that's not God's character we're going to see that Pharaoh rejects rebelled against God's revelation and he's going to reject the wise counsel of these servants when they say hey something unique and we'll see this in the upcoming weeks they're going to show Pharaoh that this is unique that this is not their same type of work they're deceitful enchantments no they're going to perceive that this has a different source these miracles and signs that God is doing look again at the text it says that Aaron obeyed he cast his staff before Pharaoh and before his servants and it became this serpent verse 11 also pharaoh called to the says here hahaaa mean the wise ones now these are certainly if we missed it beforehand we see that he caused calls for his haha mean his white wisdom his wise counselors that's what that term means and also to thee make cash theme his Sorcerer's this is word for in modern Hebrew it relates to magicians or wizards so he calls these people to him in light of this and notice what it says and also they did who did the heart to Mae mitts right now these are the Sorcerer's these unique people and we find them at same word being used for example in the Book of Daniel for in Babylon they had this saying group of people who were seen as wise ones that could do miraculous things and they were the ones that had great influence over the leader and what we find is this God is revealing himself to them in order that they might give wise counsel correct counsel to ferrell but we're gonna see that pharaoh focuses on the wrong facts why do I say that notice what it says in verse 11 once more also pharaoh called to the wise men and to the Sorcerer's and they also did who did these are two main mitzrayim these are enchanters and they did so notice what it says Bay lehayim now I believe most English Bibles say and thus they also did with their enchantments and that's fine but what's interesting is a word that's used here the word lahat is the word in Hebrew one of the words for flames and I thought wow that is a unique curve I would have never thought from reading the English that this would be the word that's there and that's why it's so important to check things in the original language and this word for flames what came into my mind and what we should do let me just share this with you see one of the greatest things that you can do in helping you to understand the Word of God is pray the text meaning this take that word God in prayer why is this word there what was the purpose of it because it's unique it's not what one would expect and what came to my mind in prayer is that oftentimes we see magicians and they do something they will will caused like a fire or an explosion right I was watching a television show here in Israel and they were doing tricks magicians and they would take something they would cast it on the ground and it would cause an explosion there would be flames smoke and it would clear very quickly and what would happen there'd be a change now why was that done well everyone knows it was done to conceal what was taking place it caused for a a moment the situation to be obscured so that you couldn't see what actually happened that brought about the change well this is what's happening here it is simply a a we've heard the expression smoking mears well this is what this is it's simply concealing how they did their supernatural acts they behaved in a way that wasn't a real power but it was deceit and the same way that a magician doesn't have real power it's sleight of hand he does and you go to a place like Las Vegas and they have these illusionists and they're not actually doing something you know supernatural it's all a illusion and oftentimes they get you to look at a different place see something different why they bring about this change this is what's happening here as well look at verse 12 and they cast each man one of those enchanters Sorcerer's magicians wizards whatever you want to translate that word each man of that group they cast their staff and they became as well serpents but here's the key we see that Satan has power God has power but the question is whose powers greater now notice they did their acts with this flames this enchantment these objects of what camouflage what actually was taking place but but Aaron didn't Aaron just cast it down and this the staff became a serpent in sight though they had to do it differently and Pharaoh didn't perceive what he should have he just saw up there was a miracle there they do it and you do it he didn't pay attention to the end of verse 12 what does it say here and the staff of Aaron swallowed up their staffs it devoured it now this is a show a superiority this is a show a greater power but Pharaoh did not discern that he simply said well you have supernatural power my heart to mean they have it as well and he wasn't paying close attention to the reality of the situation that supernaturally that Aaron staff was able to devour all of theirs and therefore they were able to do what they did they were defeated but farrell wasn't paying attention to the defeat and that's something that we need to realize we need to be on the side of God's victory we need to pay attention to who has been defeated and that's the enemy one more verse and we'll be done verse 13 in my opinion we need to go back to verse 3 and remember what God says I will harden the heart of Pharaoh how I will Mull apply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt that's what causes Pharaoh's heart to be hard not that God reached in and made his heart heart it was through him seen these miraculous revelation but not responding to it look at verse 13 waha zach lay farm and the heart of Pharaoh became strong now heart is also understood as a mindset he said where's that taught in the scripture well the Bible says as a man thanks in his heart so is he so heart don't think of that that that literal organ that pumps blood biblically we see that the heart is the seat of one's thoughts his decision-making apparatus within him so we need to bring our hearts submissive to the revelation of God that's one of the wisest things that a person can do you need to write that down and and pray it God I want my heart to be submissive to your revelation I want to decide I want discernment of your revelation so that I can obeyed and apply it to my life Pharaoh did not so was because of Pharaoh's inability to respond his unwillingness his stubbornness to respond to God's revelation he didn't see the defeat of his Wiseman their staffs were no more but Aaron staff remained and Pharaoh his heart became hard how he didn't respond o beat Lee to the revelation now how do I know that what you keep reading says Vail Oshima alayhim he did not obey them he did not listen he did not hear or perceive what God did his revelation and here's the point that I want you to see every time no matter who you are if God reveals something to you and you reject it you do not submit to it what happens it will strengthen your heart in an improper way instead of having a contrite heart instead of having a heart that God puts his desires within your heart no when you have a strong heart or a hard heart we're gonna see different words are used it is a heart that is bent towards your desires and rejecting will not listen will not hear will not obey the things of God so he says and Pharaoh's heart was strengthened via Haziq lathe farm now it can be that God it's in the third person singular that God hearten are not hardened strength in his heart the Pharaohs heart but what's interesting is this it should be via Kazak at lathe para the fact that the word at is not there could mean that the subject is Pharaoh's heart that Pharaoh's heart it became strong why because he did not listen unto them just as God had spoken so God is not surprised here God's aware of this and if we want to be wise we need to pay attention to all that's going to happen what God's going to do these miracle signs remember what God says I'm going to multiply my signs and my wonders before Pharaoh and this multiplication is the source for why Pharaoh's heart becomes hard and what we're going to emphasize in the weeks to come we're going to emphasize what hap always always always before the statement Pharaoh's heart became strong Pharaoh's heart became hard Pharaoh's heart became dull those different words are used and it's always as the outcome of God's revelation his miraculous signs his wonders that are done before Farrell Farrell learns but he doesn't put the learning into action he rebelled and it's this rebellion that causes his heart to become harder and harder and harder and stronger and stronger in his desires rather than the desires of God well I'll stop with that until next week and we press on in Exodus chapter 7 until then Shalom from Israel well we hope
