Shalom and welcome to via after Israel a Hebrew phrase which means you shall love Israel we hope you'll stay with us for the next 30 minutes as our teacher dr. Baruch shares his expose Ettore teaching from the Bible dr. Baruch is the senior lecturer at the Sarah Avraham Institute based in Israel although all courses are taught in Hebrew at the Institute dr. Baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in English to find out more about our work in Israel please visit us on the web at love Israel you are G that's one word love Israel o RG now here's Baruch with today's lesson one of the questions that we see God posing to humanity is this will you change will you make yourself available for the revelation of God doing so with a desire and that is whatever and I want to emphasize that whatever God will reveal that you will respond to it in obedience that you will make whatever change do whatever he requires whatever it might be for one purpose in order that you might exalt him glorify Him worship Him and have the privilege and it is a great privilege in participating in the work of God so are you really willing to listen to God with that desire to respond in obedience well one man who time and time was not and it was Pharaoh despite the great revelation that God gave to him well take out your Bible and look with me to the book of Exodus and chapter 9 the book of Exodus and chapter 9 in our study tonight we're going to look at - my coat - plagues that God is going to put on the Egyptians the first one is this plague known as as the there which is a pestilence or disease and the second one that we're going to look at is with the word Shaheen which are boils now both involve suffering but according to what we read in the text according to what the commentators say this second one that we're gonna look at tonight among these two plates has to do with pain in a most intense manner so will God place pain upon an individual yes he will and what was the reason for that well two reasons one is a rejection of God's revelation secondly submitting to a wrong leader so before we do anything tonight we need to ask ourselves are we truly submitting to the right type of leadership in our life now we see throughout the world that there are many elections going on perhaps there'll be a third one in Israel but all over we see that taking place next year a major election in the United States and the question that each person needs and must and will answer doing nothing is an answer a lack of response is a decision and the question that we have to answer is are we going to support godly leadership are we going to choose the right ones to follow and by and large when we look at humanity the greatest number of people choose unwisely they choose devoid of Revelation or they reject the revelation that God provides so ask yourself a very important question are you submitting to the right influence the right leadership in your life that you're making wise God pleasing decisions see you can be a believer your name can be written in the Lamb's Book of Life but that does not mean that you're walking in obedience well as I said look with me to the book of Exodus and chapter 9 we're going to begin with verse 1 we read here and the Lord spoke to Moses and he says go to Pharaoh and speak unto him here again revelation from God through Moses and thus you shall say this thus said the Lord the God of the Hebrews now this phrase we've looked at it several times it's been written in the scripture but I want us to look at it and perhaps a different way than we've had thus far and that is the god of the Hebrews you know what this means we've looked at it as the Hebrews have a relationship with God that's true it's called a covenant but because of that and because of God's initiative God has a relationship with the Hebrews they are his people the Hebrews are not Pharaohs people Pharaoh has taken hold of them with no authority from a divine standpoint meaning this Pharaoh is holding on to that which does not belong to him and us we can do that same thing we can have things in our life that we're holding on to we need to realize something we no longer belong to ourselves you say where's that found in the scripture well 1st Corinthians chapter 6 it says glorify God with your body why because you were redeemed with the price what's that price the blood of Messiah therefore you are no longer your own remember bought with the price we belong to him therefore if we hold something without his permission if we do things without his permission we are in defiance to God and once again we need to be asking our is there something in my life that I'm holding on to that I'm practicing that's dear to me that is in defiance with God's will for my life let me assure you there are things there are those things they might be hidden from you the enemy may have camouflaged them you may think there's nothing wrong with that but you need to be wise enough to bring and this was the purpose of Yom Kippur a few weeks ago in essence 12 days ago you need to be thinking about what it is bringing your petitions before God confessing seeking what there might be in your life my life that are displeasing so look at this text again the Lord spoke to Moses and he says go to Pharaoh and say to him thus said the Lord the God of the Hebrews and what was he supposed to say well again nothing's changed many rounds have have gone through between Moses and Aaron and Pharaoh but nothing's changed there's that saying Proclamation and realize God does not change he's not a man that he should change his ways what he says is right it's perfect therefore we need to submit to it and what is God's message to Pharaoh very simple we've talked about it Shahla at me via of Dooney which means send forth my people and they will serve me now the implication is this because Pharaoh holds on to the Hebrews they are not serving the Lord they make no mistake about it they are not performing the purposes of God and God says the primary reason for that at this time is because of Pharaoh's disobedience because Ferrel will not allow them to go into the wilderness to sacrifice to their God and to worship Him he is hindering the things of God and when we hinder when we're defiant when we stand in opposition to God's will realize there will always be sooner or later and oftentimes it's sooner sooner than we thought sooner than we hope there's going to be a response from God and that's what's gonna happen here so he says send forth my people that they might serve me verse 2 now nothing surprises God and we're gonna see in the weeks to come one of the things that Exodus emphasizes in these chapters leading up to Passover is the for knowledge of God God knows everything and let me say this now I'll repeat myself in the weeks to come but a theology a way of understanding who God is how he performs that does not take into account God's foreknowledge is a theology that is going to be incorrect that does not properly apply truth to the Word of God so we need to have a truthful a right way of interpreting God the Scriptures and therefore we need to realize God knows all things when did he know all things always his foreknowledge is perfect and he says look at verse 2 for if you refuse to send forth still holding on to them now what God is saying and I translated very literally but he says if you and I'll give the paraphrase of what it literally wants to convey if you press this if you still if you persist in holding on to them and not sending them forth there's going to be a response and what does that response will look now to verse 3 behold the hand of the Lord will be now the hand there's two things we need to understand about this term yad yad Hashem the hand of the Lord it speaks to deed and power so a powerful deed it also speaks to Authority my hand is going to be on you meaning that God's gonna manifest his authority over them God is gonna manifest who is supreme who is the real king over all humanity now secondly he's going to do something we talked about in the Shema as we do each week says that you shall do something bind them to your hand and bind them to your forehead between your eyes when we speak about the commandments being bound to our forearm what does it speak about that we should do the commandments when the commandments are said they taught a folk been anecca when they're where they're - filling these phylacteries between our eyes they're for the purpose of meditation thinking and these two things work together we meditate we think we study the commandments of God in order that we might do the commandments of God and what we find here is that Pharaoh he isn't interested in God's revelation because he's not interested in doing God's revelation and this reveals a principle if we're not interested in doing God's revelation we're not going to receive in any significant Guri God's revelation Pharaoh does it's an exception it's teaching us something so look again at verse 3 behold the hand of the Lord will be against your livestock which are in the field against your horses literally against horses against donkeys against camels against your cattle and against your flock and then we find the phrase the ver kavod covet Mayotte what does that mean Mayo is very covet as heavy the ver is pestilence so a very heavy pest it's is coming and this is this plague of pestilence and this is disease sickness and it's serious because notice what it's going to say in this scripture he says the hand of Lord is going to begin be against all of your cattle all of your livestock all of your flock and what's he going to do look at verse 4 it says and the Lord will make a distinction between the cattle of Israel excuse and the cattle of Egypt I'll remember that God is promised he says I'm going to make a difference a a separation a distinction between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt and what's he going to do well we know he will send this the ver this this pestilence on only the livestock the horses the donkeys the camels the cattle the flocks of the Egyptians but notice how he says this very carefully first for once more and the Lord will will make a distinction between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt or livestock however you want to translate that word McNay they lo you moot Meiko live nice well devar which means very literally and will not die from all of the children of Israel devar a thing now that means during this time of this Makka this plague there's not going to be one death among any of the livestock of the children of Israel but this is in contrast to the total death that's going to happen to all the livestock the cattle the horses the donkeys the camels the flocks and the cattle of the Egyptian they're going to suffer don't miss this they're going to suffer a total loss now that's almost unheard of I mean in a short amount of time through a disease all every type of animal we know that sometimes there'll be a disease among cows other time there'll be a disease among sheep but it's very unlikely and very seldom that that disease spread among species but here this one the there this one pestilence makes no difference the type of animal they all contract it they contract it at the same time and they die at the same time that is the implication and why do I say that look if you would to verse five and the Lord set moet now that word mowadh is a appointed time it is the same word for a festival and we remember I say this often but we remember in the Book of Leviticus Leviticus chapter 23 these know Adam Messiah actually the Lord says moua die they are my appointed times a very important word because it speaks about Revelation and it also speaks about destination meaning this the word mouid comes from a Hebrew word jihad jihad means a destination it is a point of of desire meaning this you get on a plane on El Al flight they'll have in Hebrew hiya odd ahem which means your all's destination and it's word yet when we talk about the word for for determining something it's the word yeah odd as well in the verbal form that God has purposed something he has determined something he has planned something sometimes it's a word in English that we say he has predestined something this is the word no Edie that these things have to do with the purposes of God and the destination the locations that God wants his people to be so he uses this word because he's trying to communicate to Pharaoh about his purpose and about where he wants things to go what direction and where the things must get to so he says look at verse five and the Lord placed a appointed time saying tomorrow the Lord will do this thing in the land the land of Egypt verse 6 and the Lord did this thing tomorrow and died all the livestock McNay all the livestock in Egypt and the livestock among the children of Israel notice the change not the Hebrews but the children of Israel did not die F Codd 1 now there's a change earlier said would not die a devar a thing now he changes and says won't die 1 now this is important many of you know I like numbers in the Bible and you can go on our website and download an article or read it there about Hebrew numerology and what you'll find is this you will find that the number one oftentimes just like we said tonight shema yisrael hashem elokenu hashem echad god that number one here o Israel the Lord your God is one this number one oftentimes reflux God he is one and therefore when we look at this text Word says not one is going to die the number one there is to show us this is God at work that he is a cause he kept them from this pestilence he kept them from dying verse 7 and Pharaoh sent and behold did not die from the livestock of Israel odd a hut it means not even to one not even one of them died now pay attention here it says via schlock para the implication is this Pharaoh he experienced what was going on all around him in that day the next day exactly 1 God said it would be through Moses Moses revealed and relayed that information to farrell why the next day God's merciful he gave Pharaoh one day to repent to come but he didn't Pharaoh we made stubborn he knew what God had done in the past but he didn't care he was defiant and that defiant brought about death think about this cattle that McNay livestock well it also relates to food but it is of value this term has to do many times when it was used in regard to the patriarchs to Avram Yitzhak and Yakov it was used in regard to convey their wealth but here we see that God what's he doing he is destroying the wealth of the Egyptians and he did so one day now that should sound familiar to us because we know in the book of Revelation God is going to bring all the wealth in this world to nothing in a moment in one hour this kind of foreshadows it's kind of the description of that now Pharaoh here's the key Pharaoh sent a messenger to investigate and bring back to him is is this true what God said about making the distinction maybe there was some other cause maybe there was some other natural explanation and that's what foolish people do God says something and they look for a natural and ungodly something that that that makes God absent from it oh well yes this this happened in history but it wasn't God it was this natural phenomenon this natural occurrence well no it's God so Pharaoh sent someone to check to bring back a message is it true was it that not one of the livestock none of the horses the camels the donkeys the cattle or the flocks of Israel not one died and it was this was revelation what God said Farrell now had confirmation he knew it was true well if you know something's true for example if you are in a building like lots of times in the building that we live in we have fire alarms going off now they've gone off I mean probably a dozen time each each year there's never been a fire so we hear this in what do we do we we don't put up the door we go out people are looking is it real that's not whatever so we don't respond but if someone said there is a fire or if I saw fire I'd be out that door in a moment now the message is this Pharaoh had confirmation yes what God had revealed it is true so what should he have done respond to it but he doesn't he refuses his defiant and what happens when we refuse and we are defiant I'll tell you what happens look at the end of verse 7 it says by if bad lay peril and Pharaoh hardened his heart now it's a word covet literally he made his heart heavy or we could say he made it dull what is it speaking about that simple understanding is this he was non-responsive to God his thoughts thoughts lead to deeds as a man thinketh in his heart so is he well Pharaoh made his heart dull to the revelation that God gave him he was defiant through and through and it says at the end of verse and he did not send forth the people verse 8 now we're going to enter into the second plank tonight and both of these cause pain but this one is going to cause physical not just emotional suffering I've lost all of this wealth all my animals have died that's painful but this is going to make very personal now this is the plague the word is shocking which is the Hebrew word for boils now it uses a word and I'll look at it now when he says in this scripture when he talks about Ababu off of a boat these are well in Hebrew it's the word for like chickenpox or measles it has to do with a prayer that is a a like we would call a blossoming of a tree well there's a type of blasting a spreading forth of a rash or of a a irritation and these are boils so what does God say look if you would to verse 8 and the Lord said to Moses and to Aaron you take for yourself a handful of Pia Pia is like suet from a furnace and you shall cast it Moses up into the heavens before the eyes of Pharaoh so now God is telling Moses Moses and Aaron you go and bring handfuls of suet from the furnace and you cast it up in the air Moses before the eyes of Pharaoh he needs to see this and why is that important well look if you would to verse 9 and it shall become a vow a vow is does but it's used in modern hebrew for a hazy day yes har Bay Ave Ave aveer there's a lot of dust it's a hazy day and the point here is that it shows darkness when there's a lot of above it's just not a hazy cloudy day it looks very very different and we get this a lot in the the spring in Israel so it shall become a haze over all the land of Egypt the implication is not over the land of goshen and it shall be upon man and upon beasts for chicane the screen for boils now we all know the account I would say very strongly it's not a parable it's a narrative in the Book of Luke that that account of the rich man and Lazarus and remember poor Lazarus here was the one who had boils all over his bodies that the dog came and left licked them he was in such pain well this is what we're talking about here great suffering and this suffering notice what it says that it was going to be upon all the land upon beasts and upon man you know what this means it means that time had allotted and there was a replenishing of the the beasts here but notice something it's remote which are those domesticated animals and what happens Perea it bursts forth these boils now this is a word as I said I've booked these like pox or measles in all the land of Egypt they burst forth they sprint and this is what's gonna happen and so what happens look at verse 10 and they took speaking about Moses and Aaron now we're going to see the fulfillment of it not just the proclaim proclamation of the prophecy for it it says they took that's Moses and Aaron from the suet of the furnace and they stood before Pharaoh and he cast it that is Moses he cast it or threw it towards the heaven and it became boils these these pox birth forth upon man and upon beasts so there's no mistake what took place immediately after Moses threw it up there was an immediate response this haze came upon and this haze this this dust that fill the air when a touched one it brought about a pock like a chicken puck or a mint Meisel it brought about a boil one that was exceedingly exceedingly painful the the Hebrew word relates this to the reader so he cast it up that is Moses into the heavens and it became boils of pox that spread out upon man and upon beasts verse 11 now verse 11 is where the the revelation is for this verse because there are those who were giving encouragement oftentimes to Pharaoh to reject to defy - to not submit to the God of Israel and who were those well the heart to mean we've talked about them these wise men these sorcerers in Egypt these that wanted to duplicate they thought the power of God they were false Wiseman they dabbled in the occult they did not speak or represent truth they had no revelation no they were individuals who did everything Eva through deceit or through deception of the enemy that that falseness of demonic influence and those is what it says in verse 11 they are highlighted we read and the heart to meme these Wiseman these sorcerers it says they were not able to stand before Moses because of the boils now normally they would come and they would either try to duplicate what Moses did or they would give some false message to Pharaoh remember when they said oh it's only the finger of God it's no big deal just ignore it Pharaoh but this time because the plague was so grievance them so painful what happens they couldn't even report for duty they were were placed down in a place of suffering that they could not arise up and speak their lies and offer their deceit and falsehood to Pharaoh look again verse 11 and the Sorcerer's were not able to stand before Moses because of the boils for it came about a plague of boils upon the wise men and upon all of Egypt now the rabbis when they look at this they say something it's what's called Mila may you tear it what does that mean a extra word now if it says it is on all of Egypt are the heart to me man Egypt obviously they are so if it says this plague was upon all of Egypt it would include that heart to me we don't need it there so naturally from a human standpoint we would say that phrase being first upon the wise men the Sorcerer's it's 8 me live may you tear it it is extra words we don't need it but the rabbi's teach properly and me lamb you tear it because they are kodesh which means there's no extra word in the scripture everything has purpose and the fact that the heart to mean our mention here for a reason it is to emphasize something yes the boils were upon all people all of Egypt but they were first and foremost and the the Midrash says first in intensity upon the wise men they suffered greatly this this plague upon them verse 12 our final verse a familiar one vikas exertion at late peril and the Lord he strengthened the heart of Pharaoh but here again how did he do that he did that because Pharaoh would not respond Pharaoh did not come he did not say you know what all of this has happening God he's got his sovereignty over everything he has brought my wise counselors which are liars but from Farrell standpoint my counselors too - nothing they can't even Araiza the ferrell didn't what happened because he was defiant resistant rejecting what God said what happened that brought about an outcome through the law of God when you and one of the things that is pointed out here some of the commentators they they say what about Farrell why isn't Pharaoh brought to his knees and the reason one gifts we don't know this is true or not is just an interpretation is that Pharaoh was spared from this he didn't have these boils he wasn't suffering but when he found out about these wise men he was what indifferent to their suffering now this is something that whenever we are indifferent to the suffering of others I tell you it will have effect upon us spiritually it will cause our heart to be dull we will become insensitive to the things of God so pharoah's insensitivity to Egypt and to the Wiseman made him dull it strengthened him in his own desires so when we look at the scripture all of this was done before Pharaoh and all of it happened to both man and beast but oddly it says nothing about Pharaoh suffering and what happened and the Lord strengthened the heart of Pharaoh and what happened and he did not listen unto them how just as the Lord had spoken to Moses and here again I want to emphasize something this is all to teach us about the foreknowledge of God and I'm gonna say this and I'll repeat it in the weeks to come but simply because God has perfect foreknowledge he knows what's gonna happen that does not mean that he's required to make that happen no when God says he knows it when he says something in advance is because he has foreknowledge not because he manipulates the situation it is because of his omniscience he is all-knowing now let me conclude with this and that is if we have a God who is sovereign all power omnipotent and we have a God who is omniscient he knows all things and he always knows all things wouldn't make sense that we would submit to him wouldn't we be interested in getting revelation from God now there's a wonderful scripture from the book of Romans that promises something that God will give to us all things with his son Messiah those who are committed to the purposes of God we are going to be recipients from God God's not going to hold anything back he's going to give us whatever we need to serve Him but in order to be recipients that we need to walk in the revelation of God Pharaoh didn't he wasn't interested in doing so so let me ask you a question are you are you interested in walking in the revelation of God that's the important question and it's simply a different way of ants asking what I asked at the beginning of the message and that is are you willing to change are you wanting to submit to the right influence the right leadership in your life if you are God's going to give you revelation he is going to speak to you so we have here Farrell not being interested in the revelation of God why he didn't want to obey God but hopefully you and I are different we want a revelation and we should do something we should pray God give me your truth God revealed to me your wisdom tell me what's going to be in the future how you want me to be prepared what I can do to be made ready for those things that are going to happen so let me ask you a question when was the last time you prayed for revelation one was last time you asked God to position you where you would be ready able to carry out his will tomorrow next week next month see many times it takes a significant amount of effort resources and time to get ready for what God wants you to do and if we're never asking never seeking revelation never seeking his provision for his purposes what are we being well the answer is we are walking in the spirit of Farrell we are walking in defiance we are rejecting the things of God and we need to cut that out and that's why one of the purposes of the festivals always is that there are times of Revelation for the purpose of repentance changing and doing what well repentance is not just any change it's a turn but not just any direction it's always always always a change according to God's will it is a turning to the presence in the direction of the Lord it's following him so I'm ask you are you truly desiring to follow him well we'll close with that until next week may God richly
