Shalom and welcome to via after Israel a Hebrew phrase which means you shall love Israel we hope you'll stay with us for the next 30 minutes as our teacher dr. Baruch shares his expose Ettore teaching from the Bible dr. Baruch is the senior lecturer at the Sarah Avraham Institute based in Israel although all courses are taught in Hebrew at the Institute dr. Baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in English to find out more about our work in Israel please visit us on the web at love Israel you are G that's one word love Israel Arg now here's Baruch with today's lesson there are two unique commandments that God has given to the congregation of redeemed now these don't replace other Commandments and instructions but these are unique they're foundational for being part of the family of God through redemption in the work of Messiah and that's what Messiah did his work was to bring about eternal Redemption and these two Commandments oftentimes are spoken of as ordinances they are immersion in the Hebrew to Villa now in Greek there's a word baptism it means i baptize and the word baptizo is where in english we hear the phrase baptism but it's an immersion it is dipping dipping and it's entirely it's not sprinke it's not putting water on someone it is literally immersion the second ordinance is the one that we're going to focus in on this evening and that is the Lord's Supper oftentimes spoken of as communion so with that said to get your Bible and look with me to first Corinthians and chapter 11 first corinthians and chapter 11 now there should be unit in this issue this is when we remember and this is going to be an important word remembrance we're supposed to take of this special this holy this this divine ordinance in a worthy manner and that involves humility when we remember what Messiah did for us that the Lord that he sent His only begotten Son into this world to die and he died a painful death he suffered for us he died his blood was shed and in order for us to experience forgiveness salvation eternal life all of this was necessary and this ordinance known as the Lord's Supper communion well it is to cause us to remember what he has done and that should give us a different perspective a perspective that's pleasing to God when we think about how God has loved us how he demonstrated that love it should be an impactful truth that changes ourselves to bring humility and a submissiveness to the objectives of God so look with me to this passage of Scripture 1st Corinthians chapter 11 verse 17 Paul writes here and this I am delivering now it's a word of instruction so he's proclaiming so he's delivering this instruction he says here but this I instruct and notice what he says I do not praise as I said earlier Paul is not pleased with this congregation they are not depicting humility they are not behaving as a congregation that understands what this ordinance is about and they are not remembering in the proper way what Messiah has done them and their need to receive that and what caused that great need to receive His mercy and forgiveness so he says for in this I am instructing I am NOT praising because not for the better what he's saying is there's not an improvement in this congregation not for the better but for the worse you have gathered together now the context is that they're coming together in the house of God in a fellowship perhaps in a home or a small building where they have gathered to partake of this ordinance we'll see this in a moment and this should have a beneficiary action for us meaning this this action of partaking should benefit us spiritually give us a right mindset give us instruction bring about in our life a perspective that's pleasing to God when we remember what Messiah has done for us but Paul writes here you are gathered but not for that which is better but rather he says for the worse verse 18 and he's going to give stern instructions he says for first you gather together in the ecclesia the Assembly the house or the church he says first you gather together in the congregation and he says this is what I hear I hear that there among you exists schisms now that's literally what that word is schism it's a word of divisions this congregation is not unified and when they come together for the purpose of obeying this ordinance which comes along with worship and fellowship fellowship with God and fellowship with one another he says very clearly look again at the text verse 18 he says first when you come together in the congregation I hear that there are schisms that exist among you he says and partly I believe so he's saying I believe what's coming back to me what I'm hearing I take a portion of that as factual I believe it verse 19 he says something here that's important and that is we need sometimes this division we need issues that that divide because well as it says in 1st John chapter 2 they went out from among us because they were not of us oftentimes there needs to be a revealing an exposure of those who are not truly walking in obedience to the authority and the truth of Scripture and this is what he says look again he uses a very important word I speak of it often that Greek word day which means something which is absolutely necessary for the will of God to be completed to be achieved and he says it's necessary for it's necessary also that that there be among you this division he says in order that the ones who and this is a word documented it's actually the word in English documentation comes from this Greek word so this falseness this division that comes from this heresy this false teaching this false behavior false beliefs he says it's necessary because it documents it manifests those who are approved among you therefore when you come together in one place he says is it not for the Lord's Supper to eat now this were eat it is a word of dependence it's not the normal word that's often used here and other places for eating in this location other places we find the word sto which is normal for human consumption people eating but here it's a word for dependence to eat for the purpose of survival and what he's saying is this mill demonstrates to us that we needed we were absolutely dependent upon what Messiah did and we need to be reminded of them that's one of the primary reasons for this ordinance of the Lord's Supper so he says look again therefore when you are coming together in one place is it not for the Lord's Supper to eat therefore he says something verse 21 for each one his own dinner let him receive beforehand in in in this let him receive this beforehand to eat now if you need to eat this same word for a dependent eating let someone do that in his own house beforehand this mill is not about physical satisfaction the Lord's Supper is not eating for the sake of having your appetite satisfied it has nothing to do with that so Paul is instructing if someone's hungry someone has a necessity eat let him eat at home this has a necessity but of a totally different realm and reason so each one his own supper let him receive beforehand in the eating and in doing so this will solve a problem what's the problem that is people are coming there and they're coming they're hungry and they're using the Lord's Supper not for a spiritual purpose but for a physical purpose to satisfy the desires of their stomach to eat enough and he's saying when this is done notice what happens he says and there on one hand are those who are hungry but on the other hand there's are those who are drunk why well people would bring those who could would bring a lot but they ate it for themselves see the Lord's Supper we need to realize and we're gonna see this in a moment it's bread and wine now why personally I prefer myths olivine or TIROS which is what we would call in English grape juice but when we look at the text we find that it's bread and the cup the word wine or juice doesn't appear here in this passage and it was common for people to come and then to celebrate the Lord's Supper with a mill but what was happening was this people were bringing and eating all of it themselves and those that have they could provide for themselves but there were others who could not and therefore they were were not being ministered to they were being excluded from this mill and therefore they would go to the Lord supper hungry physically and others who had a lot they would go there having been satisfied not just buy food but buy wine and they would go there drunk so he says verse 22 here's his instruction for do you not have homes to eat and drink he's saying for a physical need of just eating as we all do you can do that in your own home this is not what the Lord's Supper and the food that accompanies it what it consists of so we should come not hungry physically but hungry spiritually for the Lord's Supper what does that mean that we come wanting to experience and be reminded of the faithfulness of God what he has done in the past what he is doing now what he will continue to do and at times we simply need to come and bring forth confession to seek forgiveness even though we have been forgiven we are eternally saved nothing can change that but still confession of sin is always appropriate not just all of my sin but to reflect what have I done today or last week or last month and bring those things up asking for forgiveness knowing that we have as we'll see in a few minutes assurance of forgiveness his work upon the cross was sufficient for all of our sins but there is no no conflict no tension when we say God I've committed this sin this week please forgive me and the Lord's Supper part of it as we'll see is coming before him having examined ourselves spiritually in light of the authority the truth and the commandments of God for his people so we read once more look if you would to verse verse 22 for do you have not own houses don't you have your own houses in order to eat and drink or the Church of God do you and here's the the idea most Bibles perhaps translate this with the phrase despise but it's the think down and it simply means that we should have a high thought but people are thinking low of insignificant they don't have the proper respect for the house of God the Assembly and let me say this without wanting to go off on a big tangent I see so many things today within fellowships assemblies congregations where their worship I truly believe it is not done orderly with reverence it's becoming too casual and the focus is on oneself rather than coming to worship God there's an individual a female teacher lead that foresight for a moment and and she speaks about the Holy Spirit coming on a person now I believe in the anointing of the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit moves in people's life no question about that but he does so mightily and orderly it is disrespectful to say oh the Holy Spirit came upon me and and I get I get I was made like toast and to giggle and to to convulse and to fall upon the ground and wiggle about this is not what we have seen scripturally as as the Holy Spirit so we need to be very careful God's Spirit he moves he moves today he anoints he imparts but he imparts in a way that that is evident through the fruits of the Spirit and through giftedness and through that which edifies and when I watch for our to a service or the only thing that goes on are people rolling convulsing screaming others laughing for several hours no instruction where is the edification the Holy Spirit that's not him functioning in those places and I'm not thinking that I know it there's no doubt in my mind that what we see being being demonstrated in many places too many places today is not of God it is not glorifying to him but rather it is that this this disorderliness this confusion these expressions which are dishonouring God and pleasing to the enemy and it's all being being prepared for this great apostasy which is coming well in this congregation there was division there was self-centeredness there was a desire to get once physical needs met rather than the character of what a congregation should be and this is why Paul says you know you're coming together and it's shameful you are shaming the house of God and notice what else he says not only that but you are shaming he says you are the word is do you have this despising for the house of God the congregation the church and by doing so he says you are shaming those who do not have your coming there and you were talking about Wow all that you have and you're eating and you are are being satisfied and just becoming drunk as he said and others are going hungry where is that love for someone else where's that ministering spirit and that's why it says you do you despise God's house so much and do you want to shame those who do not have very stern words he says what should I say should I praise you in this and he says verse 23 he or in 2 verse 22 I will not praise now this is vital listen to what he's saying he's saying I am NOT praising this group I'm looking at this and what's going on here is not praise worthy and I can look at congregation today and I'm not being judgmental understand something about judgment for a moment first of all the concept of judgment and by the way we're going through the book of Matthew on our Hebrew television show here in Israel and I just finished teaching that first part of Matthew chapter 7 where that famous verse so many people know it you know judge not lest you be judged and they just want to say keep your thoughts to yourself that's what that verse means no it does not in this sense this idea of judgment it is a condemning no we're not condemning what I'm doing is evaluating things based upon the revelation of God's Word and it is appropriate to say this is not pleasing to God this is out of order this is not keeping with the Word of God the character of God the fruit of the Spirit the edification that comes from the spirit now if I judge them condemning them that's something totally different but saying to someone you are in disobedience if you you punish them that's judging I don't punish people I have no right to do that I don't have authority to do that but every believer being instructed by the Word of God we should evaluate things and at times we need to speak against things that's going on among believers this is why Paul says I will not praise this very clear now look at verse 23 he says for I receive from the Lord that which I received from the Lord I also deliver unto you so now Paul is setting things straight how not by his own opinion not what seems right in his own eyes but he says that which I have received from the Lord he says that also I have given to you and that I have given to you means it's not new revelation Paul has taught that he's teaching it now and because of the construction of the Greek it tells us that he will continue to teach this same thing there is a consistency in his revelation to the people in Corinth and throughout all of his apostles or all of his epistles excuse me he says that the Lord Yeshua now I like that term you sure that name because it means salvation but there's nothing wrong and I keep saying this because we get so many emails are you afraid to say the name Jesus absolutely not wonderful name here it's ASIS in the Greek also a wonderful name but ASIS it is a Greek enunciation for the Hebrew Yeshua in the same way jesus' we're going back when I say Yeshua to the source language for that name so we read look carefully he says for that what I receive from the Lord also that is what I'd have delivered to you and will continue to liver that the Lord Yeshua in the night in which he was betrayed he took bread and after giving thanks he broke and said broke the bread in other words divided it and he said take take eat this is my body which in behalf of you has been broken so he speaks here and he does something he gives and this truth is that this is a focus upon him the Lord's Supper above all things focuses upon Messiah his death and the redemption that death brought about look again he says take eat this is my body in behalf of you having been broken this do in remembrance to me so that also the cup after the dinner he took saying this is the cup of the new in my blood now there's two things that need to be said here first of all when we're dealing with the body and the blood this is important because it speaks of a sacrifice or an offering this is key because this is saying that he is a sacrifice that's what he came into the world to do and a specific type of sacrifice Redemption so body and blood these two aspects were part of any animal sacrifice secondly notice that the body is important died but also the blood and I haven't mentioned this for a while but those who teach that the blood is only a u4 ism for his death is not true there's a well-known pastor in California and he is confused about the significance of the blood and I say this because he was asked now do you believe in the blood of Messiah and he says of course I believe in the death of Messiah that was absolutely necessary now you see what he did he changed things he was asked about the blood the necessity of the blood and he says of course I believe in the death of it for him the shedding of blood isn't you frizam for dying this is not accurate in this context and then he goes on and says that the temple he calls it a slaughter house that the priests were ankle-deep into blood that it was a a house of carnage and in bloodbath and such false false false now he doesn't come from a perspective that reads much concerning what was done in the tabernacle and temple and the reason why I say that is because if you study that both from a biblical perspective and from a rabbinical one you'll find something that blood has to be dealt with very very carefully they caught that blood they disposed of it it was very significant so saying that they stood up and ankle deep blood and saying all of this stuff that that he did about eight temple was a slaughterhouse well yes they sacrificed animals and they said he thought it was barbaric no it was not the animals were killed in a painless manner so what he teaches is totally wrong about the historical accuracy of the temple service and because he doesn't understand that he misses out on the significance of the blood of Messiah and when we look at the Lord's Supper we talk about his body that died but also the blood that was shed and that's why he says look carefully look again at verse 23 for I received from the Lord that which also I deliver unto you and again that's have delivered and delivering and will deliver that the Lord Yeshua on the night in which he was betrayed he took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and said take eat and this is a word for eat in an absolutely dependent manner that that's why you're eating for this is my body in behalf of you being broken this do in remembrance of me and likewise also the cup after the supper this is important because the cup after the supper is the cup of redemption now you say well that is not mentioned in the scripture that's true it is traditional but sometimes tradition and culture needs to be understood to understand why this is the cup after the supper and when we look at the context it says here and after the supper saying this the cup this cup is the New Covenant in my blood well the New Covenant is a cup or the New Covenant is a of redemption and every covenant has to be ratified by blood so the blood here is dealt with separately from his body separately from his death because the blood establishes a new covenant or for that matter any covenant now this is significant because death alone does not suffice you look at the Torah Moses took the blood he sprinkled the blood on the the the tablets upon the people blood was necessary it was not sufficient just that animal died but the blood was used as well so we have to be consistent with the revelation of Scripture now look if you would to verse 25 the second half where he says this do as often as you do it he says as often as you drink do so in my memory so twice memory memory is important in remembrance of him in my remembrance and that's important because it tells us the significance of his death what he did upon that cross his death and the shedding of his breath brown blood we read this do for us often as you drink he says you do so in remembrance of me for whenever you drink that whenever you eat of this bread and you and this cup you drink the death of the Lord you proclaim until which he should come so we look past to what he did for establishing a new covenant but a new covenant there's outcomes there's purposes and the purpose of that new covenant a kingdom covenant a covenant of redemption is for what he's coming back to establish so it's so significant that when we think about what he did we need to remember him and that he's coming again verse 27 so that whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner what does he do it says here that he is guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord now this is why it's so important to pay close attention to these last verses we do not want to partake of this special ordinance the Lord's Supper taking that bread and drinking from that cup in a way that is unworthy because it will bring guilt upon us before the Lord and notice what he says here whole verse so that whomsoever should eat of this bread or drink of this cup in an unworthy way guilt is he guilty as he of the body and the blood of the Lord pretty serious it would be like you're the one that put him to death now our sin did but he forgives but when we act in this way he is going to treat us as the ones who came against his son so it's a term in order to show us the severity of not partaking of the Lord's Supper in a proper way the danger of of taking it in an unworthy manner verse 28 he says examine yourselves literally let a man examine himself and thus from the bread eat and from the cup drink for eating the one who eats and drinks in the other worthy manner what does he do it says judgment upon himself he eats and why because he did not discern the body of the Lord meaning he did not understand what Messiah came to do his need fort therefore he is going to be judged by such behavior not discerning the body of the Lord verse 30 on account of this among you many and there's going to be two words different words used for many many are our wick weak and sick and many a different word for many have fallen asleep that means died now that you tell us something if we partake in an unworthy manner not discerning ourselves acknowledging our sinfulness understanding what he did and understanding it properly it is going to have an adverse effect upon us not only spiritually but physically some are sick some are weak and some are dead that's the implication to this then he writes very importantly he says verse 31 for if we judge ourselves we will not be judged so if we come before our Heavenly Father in the name of Messiah rightly confessing our sins knowing how unworthy we are and how absolutely desperate we were in the need of messiahs work upon that cross let that redemption that produces forgiveness and new life eternal life Kingdom life it's only when we partake with that recognition are we doing it properly and what did you say he says for if we judge ourselves we will not be judged and if we are judged by the Lord what will he do he'll discipline us why in order that not with the world we should be judged so if we judge ourselves and we utilize messiahs sacrifice and appropriate that to ourselves by faith taking hold of the grace through that great message of the gospel then he says we will not be judged with the rest of the world when it is condemned so that verse 33 so that my brethren when you come together to eat wait for one another meaning this wait to see how many people are there and distribute the food appropriately so that everyone eats why now you may ask the question why do they eat with a meal in that accompanies the Lord's Supper there's a reason for that eating in the Bible is significant I'll give you the scripture Deuteronomy chapter 8 verse 10 a hot evasive active rock that I don't know hello haha when you eat and are satisfied you you bless the name of the Lord God so this shows us that it was blessing God praising God that accompanied the Lord supper biblically speaking so he says brethren my brother when you come together to eat wait for one another distribute the implication is distributed so everyone has something to be thankful about and that their physical needs are satisfied then he says then he says you partake at the Lord's Supper but look at verse 34 but if a certain one is hungry meaning that's not good to satisfy him he's coming they're not just they eat something and give thanks to the Lord and then partake of the Lord's Supper in a worthy manner if he's coming there because of hunger he says no let this one eat at home in order that you don't gather for judgment if you come for a physical reason rather than a right proper spiritual object if to the Lord supper he says then your gathering together to be judge for judgment finally into verse 34 he says and the remaining things he says when I should come I will set them in order so Paul is quite clear in this passage of Scripture about the significance the importance of the Lord's Supper and how one should partake of this communion examining himself or herself and discerning how God sees him and why he or she had that need for messiahs work on the cross and receiving it with gratitude with praise and not coming there to satisfy your your physical needs but coming there in order that we might bless the name of God together and that we might come before him in a proper way recognizing what he has done remembering him and proclaiming his death until he comes back having been risen coming back as the Lord of lords and the king of kings while close with that until next week Shalom from Israel well we
