Shalom and welcome to via hafte yes Ryan a Hebrew phrase which means you shall love Israel we hope you'll stay with us for the next 30 minutes as our teacher dr. Baruch shares his expose Ettore teaching from the Bible dr. Baruch is the senior lecturer at the Zahra Avraham Institute based in Israel although all courses are taught in Hebrew at the Institute dr. Baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in English to find out more about our work in Israel please visit us on the web at love Israel you are G that's one word love Israel Oh our G now here's Baruch with today's lesson are you open to being instructed by God let me say it another way do you want the Holy Spirit to be your teacher that you might know what is God's purpose for you how he would want you to live your life the things to do the things not to do that in the end that you'll find the blessings of God that's what being taught by God brings about within a person God's blessings but oftentimes in order to hear the instruction of God you must be willing to obey the instructions of God if they are simply something that you're gonna take under advisement God will not usually speak to you so we need to make a decision and open ourselves up to God's purpose and say yes God what you have for me I will do and that will require faith not simply a faith that says yes I want to receive forgiveness and I'll trust in what Messiah has done that's the beginning point but face should mature and it should lead us not to simply focus upon what he has done for us which is marvelous which is foundational which brings eternal changes and we forever praise and Fort don't want to minimize that but after receiving what he has done for us on that cross and I'm speaking about Messiah Yeshua we should move into maturity where we begin to do things for God does he need me - no he does not does he give me the privilege of participating in his purposes yes he does and why is that so that we can enjoy fellowship with him that we can grow and mature in our knowledge of God well what we're going to do today is look at a very important scripture from the book of Genesis chapter 26 and in one sense this scripture confirms what we've learned a few times earlier but it also teaches us that we are called to live in a way which manifests God's glory and when we are people who truly want to serve God obey Him bring honor to him be a witness testify to his truth to others God is going to move guide direct and here's the key instruct us so that we can be people who are vessels that belong to him vessels that are faithful vessels that are useful so with that said take out your Bible and look with me to the book of Genesis in chapter 26 the book of Genesis chapter 26 the focus here is on Yitzchak or Isaac now in one sense this passage has has interrupted our chronological order because we've been talking about in chapter 25 we were talking about the sons of yet Scott Asaph and Yaakov Jacob and Esau and now in chapter 26 we're gonna learn something we're gonna learn about the Philistines and we're going to see that they are enemies of God and we're going to see next week that there is a relationship a spiritual connection between the Philistines and the inna mites let me say that another way between the Philistines and the descendants of Esau we'll talk more about that at the end of chapter 26 but look with me to verse 1 Genesis chapter 26 and verse 1 and it came about a famine in the land now normally this scripture when it says there's a famine in the land it's to show God's displeasure that God is not blessing but here's an important truth simply because God's not blessing in abundance meaning humanity in a general sense this is an opportunity for the man of God the woman of God to be lifted up and what I mean by that is this when things are not going well when God's judgment his displeasure is being poured out upon this world it is an opportunity for his people who love him and desire to obey Him and be used by him to be that fruitful vessel it is an opportunity for them to behave in a way that manifests God in them oftentimes these difficult periods that this world goes through give us who want to serve God an opportunity to be more visible to stand out and that's what we're gonna see with Isaac he is gonna stand out in the midst of those who are around him so look again at verse 1 and it came about a famine in the land and this was beside the first famine which was in the days of Avraham now that's there to cause us to remember Avraham's response and what he did what we talked about earlier when he went down to Egypt and what took place at that time in his life how he responded and you might remember that we talked about how Avraham that he made a statement he told the king of Egypt that Sarah was his sister now we learn later on from a legal standpoint she was they had the same father but different mother so they were half related on the father side but in one sense you could say that she was his sister and I realized many people wanted to to say that say concerning Avraham that he sinned that he lied that he showed faithlessness but when we unraveled all that was around that we found that God blessed him we found that God used that we found that God said that Avraham was a prophet someone that heard from God and we did not see any of God's displeasure poured out upon Avraham and that is a convey to us that Avraham did nothing wrong now if you're still struggling with that this chapter is going to be of great importance to you and it just goes along with what I've said earlier and that is one of the best interpreters of the Bible is the Bible itself and we need to pay close attention to all the tools that the Word of God employs in order to convey truth to us so there was a famine and this is in addition to the famine that were in the days of Avraham it says reading on in verse 1 and yet skok he went down to AVI melet the king of the Philistines we're in Guerard now this is important because he's on the way to Egypt but he does not make it to Egypt he's on the way and he stops off at this place and who does he meet well we're gonna see the king of the Philistines now remember that term Palestine it is a very significant word in one sense we're gonna learn that these people are in opposition to the things of God we see that especially later on in the days of defeat and I'm speaking about King David when you look at the scripture if you were to say what can we know about the Philistines they were enemies of David that's one of the things that the text emphasizes and if you come from a good understanding the scripture you're going to find that these Philistines or Palestinians as they're called in modern times are going to be an enemy of the son of David that is Messiah that they're going to stand in opposition to what Messiah wants to establish so that'll become clearer in the weeks to come so Isaac he goes to avi melech the king of the Philistines in Guerard and notice what it says in verse 2 and the Lord appeared to him and said do not go down towards Egypt so we have a commandment and this just underscores more offer than not when God speaks to someone he speaks and the language of Commandments so if you're not interested in submitting if you're not interested in obeying doing what God instructs you he's not going to be your teacher the Holy Spirit is going to be rather quiet in your life but when you can go before God in prayer and sincerely say God what you reveal to me what you place upon my heart and I want God to give me his desires for my heart because when I learn what they are I will gladly submit to them when that's the case you're gonna find a similar experience what do we read here look again at verse 2 and the Lord appeared to him and said do not go down towards Egypt but do something we read in the last half of verse 2 Chaconne beaux-arts now there's going to be two words that are going to be emphasized here one is a word lagar which means to live in to reside to dwell the other word is a word lashauwn and that means also to dwell or reside two very different words and if you do a good study of this word you find something even though we might think at first plants that they're synonyms they are not exactly cinnamons and the reason for that is this this word used here Chaconne it has significance that the word lagar does not lag or is in a general way but if I said the word Myshkin that Tabernacle you would say that word is significant and it's derived from this same word if I mentioned the term Shekinah glory she not Hashem and Hebrew Tina represents God's dwelling presence so it's very significant that we see that this word is used here the word Shalom what he's saying - - yet Scott is I want you to do well here in a way that manifests my presence that reveals my glory and this is going to be confirm boldly in the text so God says don't go down to Egypt but dwell in the land which I will say unto you so we see another principle here he has to affirm I will dwell in the land and God then is going to follow that up with greater revelation and tell him exactly where he wants him to dwell we're always seen in the scripture that obedience leads to additional revelation look now to verse 3 now here we go - this word Liguori it says here garba art says oh dwell in the land in this land so we go back to the other word simply meaning I want you to dwell in this land and those who God says when we follow just the simplicity of the commandment God is going to draw closer to us because he says here and I will be with you now this is an important word why because this with you signifies a redemptive relationship and redemption it's important because it brings about transformation redemption brings about a fruitfulness a bounteous it brings about God's blessing so we read here I will be with you and here's the key and I will bless you so God wants to be with us so that he can bless us but if we don't obey Him or not going to be blessed and that's why it's very dangerous now we know and I would never want to in any way minimize the statement that I'm going to make which is by faith that you are saved not of your works but it's through the grace of God so when it comes to being saved experiencing Redemption it all comes through grease but having been saved it is going to manifest faith is going to manifest a fading saving faith is going to manifest itself in deeds that's what the scripture reveals and that's why it says here I will be with you and I will bless you for to you and to your seed now this is very reminiscent of confidential language what covenant I'm speaking about the Covenant that God made with Avraham this term Zehra seed is key to the Opera hammock covenant and that's why says look again middle of verse 3 for to you and to your seed I will give all and it doesn't say koha arts that's what usually says but here it says koha are the suit what's the difference between arts and arts suit our suit is plural so I'm not giving you all this land that I'm gonna give you all these lands or countries so this is important because it speaks of God giving to the seed of Yitzhak giving countries this is important it is written uniquely in the biblical text and another thing we're going to see is that this scripture has prophetic indicators meaning this it's written in a way that reveals parallelism which is a chief characteristic of Hebrew poetry because prophecy oftentimes has poetic tendencies poetic indicators and that's what we're gonna see here so I will give all these countries and I will establish my oath which I swore to offer on your father and when we speak about a from what should come into our mind the answer is promise so we see something that's underscored over and over and over in the there is an undeniably related connection between land and promise so much so that people have called it the promised land but the land brings about greater promise what's that greater promise ultimately it's going to be the kingdom of God and we'll see that later on especially in the second half of chapter 26 so I will establish my oath which I swore to Abraham your father verse 4 and I will multiply your seed so the seed of its and we're gonna learn later on this is being set up that it's not Esau as the seed of yet Scott but it's going to be Yaakov I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heaven and I will give to your seed all these lands and it says in your seed all the nations of the earth now nations go yay so all the Gentiles of the earth and notice this your Bible say will be blessed but it's very important it's not the normal passive it's not the NIF ow or the pool ow but what is it it is that hit pal now if that doesn't make a lot of sense to you and I'm sure for most of you it does not realize that you can in a matter of a couple hours learned so much about Hebrew grammar that when you use proper tools like the discovery Bible you will be able to discern things that otherwise you cannot so it takes some investment but we're dealing with the Word of God a few hours can give you the ability to discern the text so much more because most of the time we just see and in your seed all the all the nations the earth will be blessed and we don't think about well that just is a potential promise but the word for being blessed here is in a unique construction if you look here and I'm speaking about the end of verse 4 it is the word they hid bara who it is in the grammatical grammatical construction hit pal why is that important because it's a reflexive so it says in your seed all the families or nations here all the nations of the earth can be blessed but what is the responsibility of those those nations just to stand around and wait for a blessing that is a violation of what the grammatical construction is trying to reveal no it's you have to be in the sea meaning you have to have a relationship with the seed of it Scott how does that come about well if you learn more about this Abraham a covenant it's blessing Israel it is identifying with Israel it is being part of a kingdom people so as you grow closer and let me point out something to you I mean you would have to be very very misguided very very sheltered from magazines newspapers news reports on the internet and also on television not to know about a growing anti-semitism that is prophetic that is a sign of the last days and do you see what's going on all the pressure politically is against Israel but God is saying you know what if you draw closer to this seed if you are in this seed you are identifying with this seed then the reflects of what this grammatical construction is saying is that God's going to respond and how is he going to respond by blessing you so it just kind of gives us a help to understand what he says in the Abraham a covenant if you bless Israel you'll be blessed this is another grammatical way of revealing that same truth so he says here and all the nations of the earth potentially that's the implication in your seed shall be blessed look at verse five now what's the first verb word of verse five it is the word and I want to get it right it's very unique it is a word at kev-kev means because in modern hebrew it speaks about que toda macaque which means as a result of this so because there's a result because of this there's an outcome now it is a outcome a result but in a positive sense if it's a positive outcome you know how we can translate this word reward now this word again ein goof Veit it is the same word as the Hebrew word for heel different vowel enunciation but the same three letters Hebrew letters and what is that telling us well there's a connection between heel and and reward or outcome we've talked about the fact that when a child is born normally the last thing to come out is the hill and when the hill comes out not the head not the risks but when that heel comes out you reward this firstborn right so there's a connection and if we understand that notice what it says here verse five at keV a share a shared Shama Avraham bakkali because of with the result that or a reward because Avram heard my voice see the context there's an outcome but here there's a reward it's positive in nature and by the way this is the same word that the name Yaakov or Jacob is derived from doesn't mean deceitful what doesn't mean sir planner all of this is basically theological anti-semitism that that creeps into the church and has has infested many individuals so they believe Jacob is this bad guy this is not what we're gonna see next or in two weeks look again at verse five a reward why Avraham listen and that word Shema means just not to hear but to respond properly he obeyed my voice and he kept my charges and my Commandments and my statues and my Torah or my instruction and that's why I began this message about speaking about instruction and it's just not all synonyms here when he says my charge my commandments my statutes and my Torah there is a progression here and when you keep god's charges or his judgments these are what we might they say today are almost like the natural laws things that are are painfully obvious that God would want someone to do this like not lie not still and then we go into Mitzvahed and mitts vote well they're also commands but sometimes we don't understand the reason for that sometimes we obey Commandments when we don't know entirely why God has said don't do this or do this and then we have the word statutes and these are things which are laws but the implication here when we look at it is that they are decrease and many times we find that these decrees have long term implications to them so they're actually more weightier more significance than then these Commandments and then finally we have the word Torah here it's Torah T Toro tie excuse me Toro tie and what it speaks about here is my instructions and here's what what you should clean from this this word speaks about a more intimate instruction one that comes as Moses received the law God spoke to him face-to-face so these are the most powerful set of instructions that bring about intimacy so these things are a progression look at verse 6 and yet Scott he dwelt in gar and knows what happened the men of that place it says the minute that place asked him to his wife now we know that rifka or Rebecca is Isaac's wife but they asked him concerning his woman and this phrase on Shama comb literally it says ye shall loo on Shama comb here's what's interesting lay a stone didn't ask him about but - and this implies something the Hebrew grammar implies not simply the NASA who's this woman you know how do you know her you know can you tell me something about her no they inquired because they wanted to come to her it is a construction that speaks of not intimacy but being in close proximity to someone so they want to know more about her so that they can come close to her and it is a term of threatening in his mind and therefore he said she is my sister why do you say that because he feared saying my sister less the men of this place will kill me concerning rifka and notice the the word here switches from when they say lay ich stove leash those that word that implies coming close to but in a threatening way and this is word ow which means about or concerning so he says realize something God is communicating with him so he says this and this is very very similar in fact the same thing as his father did Avraham concerning Sarah his mother when he said Sarah's my sister even though they were legally married but we've already talked about the fact there was a family relationship between them they were half-brother and sister so look again he says less the men of this place they will kill me concerning rifka for she is good in appearance meaning she was very attractive look at verse 8 now all of this was for the purpose of buying time these men Yitzhak was convinced that if he said she is my wife what they will do under their culture is to kill him in order to have her and if you looked at some of the rabbinical commentaries they will say that you know it's almost fighting for someone and it's seen as an acceptable practice I want her doesn't matter any to me that she's married to you I'll just kill you and take her it's a contest and he didn't want to enter into this fleshly contest so he said she is my sister therefore there would be no reason for them to kill her and it bought him time now why do I say bought him time well notice what the scripture says in verse 8 see this is an example of Scripture giving / providing us a right understanding look at verse eight and it came about that the days were linked in to him there he was there for a longer period of time and in doing so people got to know him he was what did God tell him dwell in the land but do so in a way that my presence is seen through you my kind of glory is seen through you verse 8 in the middle because that he was there for a while avi Malik he was looking Ali Malik the king of the Philistines he was looking through his window and he looked and he saw and behold yet Scott Mesa heck at rifka ishtam now I said in Hebrew because you see the plan words Yitzhak Missa heck same word just different forms so we say Isaac he was playing or he was jesting with rifki his wife and in a way that revealed to AVI Mela something what was that look now to verse 9 and avi Malik called to Yitzchak and said surely behold your wife is she how is it that you said my sister is she now here again we have already been instructed in chapter 24 that there was a family relationship this was a cousin and in the biblical language you can use the term ox or a haut for not just a what we would say a brother or sister but for a family relationship and because that he did not say something that was wrong he knew that they would interpret it one way but he was just being wise now why do I say that here again you have to see what the scripture does with all of this don't form a scriptural interpretation based upon your own understanding let the Word of God guide you to a right interpretation so avi Malick called to Isaac and said surely behold your wife is she how is it that you said my sister she and yet Scott said to him for I said said this less I will die on account of her so he knew how things happen he knew what the culture was and the the traditions of that area once an avi Malik he did something he said why have you done this to us for almost 1/2 of the people have lied with your wife and would have brought upon us shame now they had a unique culture but notice what it says the word here of great importance in verse 10 is word Kemet Kamat means almost something was going to happen so almost it was getting very near to one of the people almost laid with your wife and in doing so it would have brought great shame upon the people guiltiness verse 11 so now we have to say well was what Yitzhak did wrong or right how did God respond what were the outcome and notice what the scripture says to us look now to two verse verse 11 and avi Malik commanded all the people everyone saying the one who touches this man or his wife shall surely die now he received from the king a blessing protection the King gave and eat it no one touches yet or rifka if you do you will die the law of the Philistines now this is important why why did he come about well the key understanding of this passage is found in verse 8 where it says by Heikki our whole low shop hiya mean which means his days were linked in there and bought him time so avi Malik could get to know yet Scott and in doing so he would understand that God's anointing God's call is upon him so he gives this edict now look in verse 12 God told it's hot to dwell in the land in order that God's glory could be manifested and notice what he did not what we would expect we would expect you don't sow the land until the famine is over but that's not what yet Scott did it says and Isaac planted in the land or so in the land in that land and he found in that year a hundred fold god blessed him a hundredfold that's great anytime but especially but you may arrive in the days of a famine now this was in order to show the the Philistines you were right there is an anointing there is a call upon this man and that he is a vessel of the Living God so he sowed the land God blessed him 100-fold and it says that the end of verse 13 just what I said and God blessed him now this is important if God was displeased with yitzhak behavior the fact that he said Rivka's my sister why is God blessing him and blessing him greatly why do I say greatly look at verse 13 the man referring to yet Scott the man became great and he went further and was greater unto that he became very great now if you look here we find one two three times this word God all great is mentioned three times why three well three is a holy number many times sometimes it's for the purpose of revealing something we could say that but revealing what in this context well we say holy holy holy what's being revealed here through Isaac's obedience his trusting him walking in the heritage of his father him following his father's footsteps and why do I say that his father said my wife is my sister and now it's Cox doing that same thing and why again do I say he's following his father's footstep well notice what the scripture does look now at verse 14 and it came about to him great flock and great cattle and many servants and what happens well instead of the Philistine saying WOW God has greatly blessed him with with flocks and cattles and servants something's going on in the time of famine this man is being blessed that's not natural that is super natural and it's when we hear God obey God and do the unexpected what the world would never do that's when God is going to set us apart and use us as his faithful vessel for manifesting his glory manifesting his power so the Philistines it says here look at the end of verse 14 the Philistines admired him they wanted to be like him and they asked him yet Scott how can we find this blessing why wish that was the case but it wasn't notice what the scripture says a vikon ooh Oh toe Philistine the Philistines were jealous or they Envy now that is never a good word to have envy or jealousy and what did that do well notice verse 15 and all the wells which the servants of his father had done dug in the days of Avraham his father what did they do they they literally stoom blew steam the Philistines they they closed them up now the word here to close it means that they filled them up and we'll see this in a moment now let me ask you a question it's a time of a drought meaning water is very precious and Avraham remember we're talking about this heritage a covenant heritage Avram went there he dug wells and he found water that is an image a description under the biblical context for blessing so Wells that that have water God's blessing and what did the Philistines do they they closed them up they filled them up why they didn't want the blessings of Avraham it's very important that you see that that's what the scripture is trying to tell us they rejected God's blessings through Abraham and it gets even more interesting than this it says they filled them up with with dirt look now to verse 16 and avi Malik said to it Scott go from us go away get away from us we want nothing to do with you because you are more powerful than us and then the word Ismay owed you are more powerful than us very much so this word may owed it is a word often times it has supernatural connotations so what they're saying is you know you are connected to the supernatural get away from us it's very reminiscent what we've seen the Gospels when you shoe Hills a man that has a legion of demons this man that was dangerous the community that they pushed out they tried to to feather him with bonds and chains and put him in the cemetery get away from us Yeshua Hilson and what did they tell you sure leave from our town we don't want anything to do with you that is the wrong response and here we see the Philistines in an undeniably way they do not want the blessings of Avraham they do not want God's supernatural provision and this is all very insightful and we'll see this as the days or the weeks press on so notice again we find here that they did something it says go away from us because stronger than us very much so are you and yet Scott went away from there and he dwelt in the plains of Guerard that word plane or valley Hubbard's transyl in your Bible is now how now how usually is a a dry River Basin that at certain times is full of water so the only reason that it's caca would dwell and know how Garang is because where he was dwelling water was pouring in everyone else was it without and what it was saying is this you don't want a relationship with Yitzhak you don't want God's provision you don't want his blessing and keep reading we find here that he dwelt there well I'm gonna end with that because next week when we finish up this chapter we're gonna see how interesting and how prophetic it becomes and how much relevance it has for the last days I'll close with that until next
