Respectfully disagree.
One of the things I love about Wall-E is that it chooses not to really have a villain. The "villain" of the story is the collective choices that humans have made; if the conflict in the movie were driven by some evil AI (as opposed to, you know, a computer just doing it's job) it would've cheapened the moral of the story, that moral being that bad situations don't necessarily come about through bad individuals, but by bad societies.
John McIntosh explains what I'm talking about perfectly in Wall-E as Sociological Storytelling.
AUTO had PERFECT Programming not “bad programming”. It followed its directives PERFECTLY.
EVA had “bad programming” and WALL-E was just an example of “Ghost In The Machine”. He started as just a Machine, as seen when he Reboots. “WALL-E” started out as a “perfectly programmed” robot but over 700 years he became Self-Aware.
The “BAD PROGRAMMING” was shown in the Robot Rebellion group.
Wouldn't that have made it a Hero?
That would actually be a pretty interesting counter and antagonist for the film. You actually do kind of agree with AUTO's reasons because of how relevant and prevalent the evidence against the idea of humans living sustainably truly is. Heck, even environmentalists don't do a really good job because they mostly just whine and complain about change, taxing and ruining people's livelihoods, rather than actually innovating and discovering new long-term sustainable methods for living.
