heavenly home this journey is fraught with danger and temptations our lord himself was confronted with temptations and therefore understands our struggles it is he who inspires us by his example and strengthens us with his word we now enter into this eucharistic celebration by reciting the entrance and defend when he calls on me i will answer him i will deliver him and give him glory i will grant him the length of days in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen amen peace be with you and with your spirit brothers and sisters we continue to offer our penance fasting and prayers for peace in ukraine and for world for this season of land which began on ash wednesday and this will end on good friday on 15th of april the main liturgical color will be purple or violet i'm already using that this is called this vestment is called chesuber as during a sunday inland on the fourth sunday sorry as during a sunday in advance on the fourth sunday inland we'll be using rose rose-colored vestment to remind us of the need to remain joyful rejoicing because god is with us throughout land earlier we have been using green which symbolize symbolizes growth and life now purple symbolizes penance and preparation as we joyfully journey with the lord throughout the 40 days of land so let's prepare our hearts to enter into this eucharistic celebration let's acknowledge our sins turn to a merciful father who comes to strengthen us as we pray for one another i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly seen in my thoughts and in my words what i've done and what i failed to do through my thought through my thought through my most grievous heart therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin body angels and sons and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen amen lord have mercy [Music] christ have mercy [Music] [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue the effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and ranks with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priest shall take the pioneer from your hand and lay it before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering aramian he went down into egypt to find refuge there few in numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on earth but we call on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our operation and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand an outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land with milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the produce of the soil that you lord have given me you must then lay them before the lord your god and bow down in the sight of the lord your god the word of the lord thank you to god our response to the word of god is be with me o lord in my distress he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and abides in the shade of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust be with me o lord in my distress upon you no evil shall fall nor plague approach where you dwell for you has he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways be with me o lord my distress they shall bear you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against a stone on the lion and the viper you will trade and trample the young lion and the dragon be with me o lord in my distress his love he set on me so i will rescue him protect him for he knows my name when he calls i shall answer i am with you i will save him in distress and give him glory be with me o lord in my distress a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask for his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god praise to you o christ king of eternal glory man does not live on prey alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of god praise you o christ king of eternal glory the lord be with you and with your spirit reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during that time he had nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this storm to turn into a love but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all the power and glory of these kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall be yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone the devil led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord dear brothers and sisters the first gospel the gospel the first sunday of every land every year is always on the temptations of jesus it can be from matthew mark oh look this year's look it is good to understand the context of this event in jesus life when did the temptation take place from the gospel of luke chapter 3 verses 21 to 23 it was recorded that jesus was about 30 years old yes it's in the scripture he was about 30 years old when he was baptized in river jordan after coming out of the water while he was still playing praying the holy spirit descended upon him and the voice from heaven the father's voice affirmed you are my son today i fathered you in jesus life immediately after his baptism he was led to the desert and was tempted even before he started his ministry to preach the good news we have this recorded right in the very first line of today's gospel chapter 4 filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days note the word wilderness and the number of deaths 40 what is the meaning of to go into the wilderness in a way these 40 days of land is a time for us to retreat with jesus into the wilderness this wilderness is not a physical place to go to as to go into a desert for land spiritually our 40 days is a prayerful journey to be with the lord journeying with him within our heart it is an inner seeking to be closer to god so as to be converted back to god land offers us the space to step back from our frantic and busy life as the economy slowly picks up and our life we realize has been dictated by media think of the zoom meeting there are various meetings we have online the deadlines that we have to meet now etc life is so busy in indeed land is the moment of grace that we can step back and reflect on the meaning and purpose of our life to repent to convert our heart to renew our love and commitment to god and our neighbor so let us use this time 40 days of land to be with god to pray and read the scriptures especially the gospel to know the heart of our lord jesus let's look at the three temptations of jesus and temptations in our life as his followers the devil tested jesus with three temptations number one change stone to bread jesus was offered instant gratification of his hunger by using his to use his own power to turn stone to bread to satisfy his hunger 2 jesus was offered to use instant power of dominance over all the kingdoms of the world if only he rejects his father and bow down to worship the tempter instant power of dominance and then he was offered instant glorification by jumping down from the high tower like a glorious messiah into jerusalem and should he jump down from the edge of the roof god will be forced to save him and people will say indeed this is the great messiah jesus refused all this but look at our christian life we too can identify with these daily temptations number one seeking a materialistic lifestyle of buying things in order to satisfy our hunger for more materialistic material things in life seeking number two seeking to use power power to control dominate others for personal gain three seeking position and recognition with an egoistic pride i like the malay word gila pankard seeking self-glory it is true that we are living in a world that demands instant gratification we can think of food instant noodle instant food everything must be instant we must get it now instant gratification with our consumeristic and materialistic lifestyle we are bombarded by advertisement buy the latest gadget look at the number advertisement on the what samsung s22 the advertisement that appears on the handphone on the television screen all over the place and you look at it at the the cars the vehicles the fashion clothing all these adverts we call it even targeted adverts they know what we are looking for and if it comes on our screen computer screen tv screen and especially your handphone we get messages offering online gambling gaming even pornographic sex for sale etc the world says be rich and powerful and famous buy satisfy your desire now just enjoy now instant gratification and when such becomes a trill we seek in life then people get addicted how many of our children students adults are struggling with addiction to games to drugs to trills etc we can also see in this capitalistic society that means money comes first profit and in the exploitative politics where so-called leaders attempted to seek more power position glory personal wealth we see this happening this attitude definitely will push god into a corner and eventually out of our lives when the person is only intent on acquiring wealth and is filled with pride and ego over his or her success or as i say gila pankard such a person will be hungrier for more wealth and power the results will be greed unethical practices corruption and exploitation of people for once profit and pleasure eventually god is no longer relevant for the person who now depends solely on what he or she possesses using wealth and authority to cling to power brothers and sisters such are the temptations that each of us face each of us faces to various degrees the devil knows this very very well and therefore before jesus even began his public ministry to preach the good news the devil immediately tried to sidetrack jesus by offering him instant glory and wealth and even suggested for jesus to use his own power to save himself and for his own advantage to reveal that ah he is a glorified messiah that means okay finish your mission is finished you have done your job however jesus chose to do the father's will through humble service and to walk the way of the cross and suffering to be with all of us humanity in our struggle in the cross that we face and even when jesus was on the cross they told him you have sexual me people save yourself come down i'm sure the son of god could have done that but jesus never used his power to save himself he never asked the father to deliver him from the cross he submitted obediently humbly to the father you one question we can ask is where did jesus get all this strength to overcome the temptation jesus knew who he really is he is the beloved son of the father that's why at baptism the father said you are my son the beloved jesus knew that that is his identity and on the cross when he was about to complete his father's mission jesus entrusted his whole life into the loving hands of god calling his him father into your hands i command my spirit jesus glorification will eventually come from the father in the resurrection but he walked the way of the cross first brothers and sisters this is the way to overcome our temptations let's look at what the devil is trying to do we go back to the temptations of the devil in today's gospel we are sure we we normally hear hear hear the three temptations but there are lines that before the temptation the devil actually stated twice if you are the son of god they will restore to turn into a love and then another time if you are the son of god the third temptation throw yourself down from here the second temptation is worship me provided you worship me in english when we use the word if i'm sure there are many english teachers here if we use the word if is to imply uncertainty doubt lack of certainty not sure hesitation weakness or we are setting a condition thus in questioning jesus if you if you are the son of god the devil wanted to cast doubt in jesus heart as to whether he truly believed he is loved by the father as a beloved son so the temptations were men to discredit and detract jesus from his mission by doubting himself his real identity as a son of god loved by the father 1 the devil wanted to tempt jesus to use his power as a son of god for his own advantage by seeking instant gratification of his desire and hunger after 40 days testing whether you're the son of god use your power and second the devil tempted jesus to deny the father and seek glory for himself with material wealth absolute power to control the worldly kingdoms and do whatever he wants as a powerful son of god use that power if you are the son of god jesus rejected all such worldly ambitions and work by acknowledging himself indeed as a beloved son of the father therefore he desires only to do what the father asks of him brothers and sisters what about us we have the same gift given by god the father to us at the baptism by our baptism we all become children of god sons and daughters of god our father in heaven this is our identity sealed and anointed with chrism on our head at baptism and confirmation we belong to god's family we are god's beloved child each of us son and daughter true temptations likewise the same devil now wants to cast doubt on our identity as the beloved child of god think of what we've gone through these two years do you believe that you are indeed the beloved child of god especially when we are suffering so much in the face of the pandemic with so much economic hardship and even some facing life crisis in sickness and in pain and for some our loved ones have passed on recently we struggle with grief and dealing coping with the question of death and loss the devil wants us to doubt whether god can forgive us because we are sinful and makes us feel unworthy to come into god's presence the devil wants to shame us so that we dare not step into the church the devil saw seeds of doubt in our hearts and so this is the temptation if you are the child of god the devil wants to cast doubt in our hearts as to whether we are still loved by our god as his or her beloved child when we doubt we use our own ways we take things into our we do things according to what we want we forgot the father so the temptation is the day work is casting doubt on who we are the beloved of god jesus shows us that god is with us he walked the way of the cross he understands our humanity our suffering our loss our emptiness our isolation the sense of abandonment at time the struggle within us so we believe in a god who loves us and will journey of us with us through these difficulties we learn from jesus that in the face of temptation and doubts we can always turn to the scripture and pray we hold on to god to our god for jesus will never abandon us he is very near to us even though we may not have been such fervent children of our heavenly father that's why jesus is with us emmanuel god with us even in the face especially in the face of this pandemic when covet 19 has infected us or our family when we face challenges and even when the church is being persecuted a war is being is breaking out as in ukraine or when we face challenges and threats always remember the creed that we receive at the baptism and we profess every sunday the first reading is about the creed of the people during moses time to put their faith and trust back in god again the second reading from saint paul is a creed of the early church the belief in this god in jesus when they pray when they call jesus will save them and so at every sunday in mass we profess our credit we turn back to god we denounce the evil one as a baptism we turn back to god and say i believe in one god the father almighty you are our loving father we are your children i believe in one lord jesus christ indeed the begotten son of god i believe in the holy spirit the giver of life who is given to us a baptism the life the strength that we need i confess one baptism for forgiveness of sins i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come we believe that there is god jesus has risen from the dead he is with us i close with the words of sample that we hear in today's second reading and be assured that deliverance will come or who prays is safe if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved and later at mass after consecration i invite you to acclaim uh after the homily less professor creed later on with faith take the words to heart and at the after consecration we call out to jesus save a savior of the world for by your gross and resurrection you have set us free amen let's profess the faith handed down to us from the apostles i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son o lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven be seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body in life everlasting amen amen the gospel tells us that our lord went to phases temptations in the wilderness filled with the holy spirit guided by the same holy spirit that we receive in baptism we as a children of our father let us pray to god our heavenly father for strength to overcome temptation the response to each petition is lord in your mercy save us for our pop bishops priests religious and lay leaders that they may always be guided by the word of god as they shepherd those entrusted to their care let us pray to the lord lord in your mercy save us for leaders in government that they may not give in to worldly temptations of power and corruption may the lord grant them hearts that are upright to serve all people faithfully let us pray to the lord lord lord in your mercy save us for peace in ukraine that world leaders will refrain from any action that would cause more suffering to the people destabilize the core existence between nations and discredit international law let us pray to the lord lord in your mercy save us for our families that we will appreciate and love one another more and more each day and where there is dissension we will experience forgiveness and healing let us pray to the lord lord lord in your mercy save us for those who have lost their faith in god that through the witness of christians carrying out works of mercy they may rediscover god's love in the world let us pray to the lord lord in your mercy hear us for our cut humans who are preparing to join our christian community through baptism that they may be strengthened and enlightened by the holy spirit in the journey of faith let us pray to the lord lord lord in your mercy save us for our personal intentions that the holy spirit may grant us gifts that will bear fruits for the glory of our god let us pray to the lord lord in your mercy save us heavenly father where your children grant us the grace of repentance through our lantern observances may we be freed from sin and be strengthened to overcome temptations so as to live in freedom as your beloved children children we make our prayer through christ our lord amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for true your goodness will receive the bread we offer you fruit of the earth work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever blessed are you lord god of all creation for true your goodness will receive the wine we offer you fruit of divine work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever so [Music] pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of his holy church give us the right disposition of lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we leave them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 day 40 long days from earthly food jesus consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lantern observance and by overturning all the snails of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worldly the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and sons we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we are clem holy holy holy lord god of hosts who comes in the name of the lord you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore we pray these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith severe savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have settled free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that power taking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together francis our pope me your unworthy servant all the bishops clergy religious and the entire people you have gained for your own remember also our brothers and sisters departed loved ones who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy will come them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with the blessed apostles with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed opposes and all the sins will please you throughout the ages we memory to be called ace learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which process from your mouth through christ our lord amen amen we have now entered into the season of land and invite all to continue to keep the overcome temptations by praying fasting and parents and arms giving prayer helps us to encounter god's mercy to be with jesus to journey with him throughout this 40 days of land fasting helps us to realize our limited strength and to place our dependency on god instead of material possessions and worldly achievement the almsgiving is a concrete fruit of our prayer and fasting because we've experienced god's mercy and compassion for us then we seek to be merciful and charitable and with to the people around us with general i'm generous almsgiving so we invite you for children to use the lantern appeal boxes i've forgotten to take one we have it in churchill and also the lantern appeal envelops as our way of offering to bless other people with material we have to be less materialistic to think more of other people and expression of cosmecy for us so three things we can do in land is to pray to fast and give generously so in simple way spend more time in prayer read the gospel to eat less it's simple and in a way offering the money safe give it to the poor needy so may we all experience jesus very close to us throughout this season of land and remember always believe in jesus confess the lord jesus is lord believe in your heart and call on god and be safe i now implore god's blessing upon all of you the lord be with you and with your spirit may bountiful blessing o lord we pray come down upon your people that hope may grow in tribulation virtue be strengthened in temptation and eternal redemption be ushered through christ our
