[Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] you [Music] today we celebrate ash wednesday which marks the beginning of the season of land a time when we examine ourselves our way of life and our motives in life the asians is assigned reminding us of our nothingness and that we are totally dependent on god for all our needs for we are dust and to dust we shall return when we die our holy father pope francis has called for the whole church to dedicate this ash wednesday as a day of fasting and pray for peace particularly in ukraine may the queen of peace protect the world from the folly of war let us now enter into this eucharistic celebration by reciting the entrance antiphon you are merciful to all o lord and despise nothing that you have made you overlook people's sins to bring them to repentance and you spare them for you are the lord our god in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen peace be with you and with your spirits welcome to the celebration of holy mass live stream to you from san jose cathedral kuching malaysia and as already reminded our holy father pope francis has called for the whole church to dedicate to this ash wednesday a day of prayer and fasting for peace in ukraine and also for world peace so we offer this intention we offer our fast and penance for this intention for world peace and let us offer penance and fuss let us also prepare our hearts to enter into this blessed season of land you have also noticed i mean dress in purple vestment which is called a chessuber in church liturgy purple is a dark melancholic color denoting penance and preparation brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly seen in my thoughts and in my words what i have done what i felt to do through my heart my fault through my most and you my brothers and sisters pray for me to the lord o god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen amen [Music] christ have mercy [Music] lord have mercy lord have mercy [Music] let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up better against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint true lord jesus christ your son who lives and ranks with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen [Music] [Music] um a response to the word of god is have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion blot out my offense o wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin have mercy on us my offenses truly i know them my sin is always before me against you you alone have i sin what is evil in your sight i have done have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned a pure heart create for me o god put a steadfast spirit within me do not cast me away from your presence nor deprive me of your holy spirit have mercy on us for we have sinned give me again the joy of your help with the spirit of fervor sustain me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise have mercy on us lord for we praise to you o christ king of eternal glory pure heart create for me o god and give me again the joy of your help praise to you o christ king of eternal glory the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you oh lord jesus said to his disciples be careful not to parade your good deeds before man to attract then notice by doing this you will lose all reward from your father in heaven so when you give arms do not have it trumpeted before you this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to wean man's admiration i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you give alms your left hand must not know what your right is doing your arms giving must be secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you and when you pray do not imitate the hypocrites the love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you pray go to your private room and when you have shut your door pray to your father who is in that sacred secret place and your father who sees all that is done in secret we reward you when you fast do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do they pull long faces to let men know they are fasting i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that no one will know you are fasting except your father who sees all that is done in secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret we reward you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ brothers and sisters in christ ash wednesday is the first day of land it is a day of fasting and abstinence and ash wednesday occurs 46 days for us it has 46 days for us to prepare for easter sunday it comprises 40 days of penance and 6 sundays of land so it's actually 46 days 40 minus the sundesk asia's externally asha symbolizes human fragility and mortality and the need to be redeemed by the mercy of god and there is also a spiritual meaning asia symbolizes the attitude of internal penance of the heart repentance and conversion to which all catechumen and baptized are invited to do so and so when talk of human frailty fragility and death one of the phrases we choose for ash west there is remember that you are dust to dust we shall return recalling the creation of adam the first man from dust given breath of god and he becomes alive and to dust we shall return in malaysia and that's why the church also respect the body of a diseased loved ones with barrier in the ground and to dust by cremation we still respect the departed person in the same way and we prepare a cemetery or columborium to bury the dead and to enter the ashes that we hold in great respect remembering that we are fragile we are mortar and yet we have been redeemed by our god our lord is a risen lord and so in the core of land we remember who we are our humanity fragility before god but also it's a time spiritually to reconcile with god the second reading from sample speaks of this the prophet joel proclaims that god is a god of tenderness and mercy compassion slow to anger and reaching compassion so ash wednesday is indeed the favorable time for us to begin land so spiritually we can do something when you receive ashes these words will be pronounced repent and believe in the gospel pneumoniae repent and believe in the gospel that comes from mark chapter 1 verse 15. so in the face of the pandemic and fighting and violence in the world pope francis in his lantern massage exhort us all let us not grow tired of doing good good for in due time we shall reap our harvest if we do not give up quoting galatians chapter 6 verse 9 to 10 let us never grow tired of doing good we are sowing for eternal life quoting pope francis land invites us to conversion to a change in mindset from the heart from the way we think so that life truth truth and beauty may not be far may be found not so much in possessing as in giving not so much in accumulating but in sharing and sowing goodness so the focus is not just possessing gathering thing for ourselves but we are going to show to soul to share the goodness of god to give so in sowing goodness and doing good we not we should not be overly concerned about seeing the immediate visible fruits one day when the time comes when we meet the lord the good things that we have done that we have offered will be revealed to us so in the meantime let us never grow tired of doing good when the time comes god will reveal to us so in a simple way of helping us to focus on doing what is right and to focus outwards we can look at it in a simple way it's simple it less and give generously to those in need and on let us not grow grow tired of doing good pope francis reminded us and it's true we may not see the goodness or difference we have sown in life this lantern season calls us i'll call us that in our faith and hope never to give up we are to keep our eyes on the lord jesus trusting that our lord will supply us a strength perseverance and endurance to always do good so let us ask god to give us the passion perseverance of the farmer and to persevere in doing good one step at a time and we are not to depend on our human effort because our strength is limited so jesus assures us of his grace and mercy that strengthens the weak and gives youthfulness to the to the young we will face challenges and storms in our life but the good news is our lord jesus remains with us through the storm he is with us so let us not grow tired of doing good let us not give up let us keep our eyes on jesus and the last point that pope francis has highlighted is on digital media we know that these last two years of the pandemic this has made us even more reliant on internet and digital media now we are following the mass on live stream students are in school online adults are working from home pope francis pointed out the danger of addiction to the digital media he encourages us to use this lantern season 40 days of land to cultivate authentic encounters with real people not through the media in simple terms let us talk and relate to persons and not through gadgets all the time that we realize at new times gadget became we are engaged more engaged rather than one another so beware of addiction to the digital media or for uptime use in digital entertainment facebook tik tok etc as an offering to god give up that time offer that time instead to pray and spend more time with people and not be not be spending time only with gadget this is something we can do during this land and to conclude we hear from the gospel today how do we keep this spirit of land matthew chapter 6 verse 1 to 18. we have heard it read to us many times the words coming back to us at the gospel we observe the latin penitential practices the traditional practices of give arms praying and fasting so three things a simple guideline is that our lantern practices whatever we do in land has always to be a blessing for others it is outward giving offering blessing other people never for ourselves so when we pray we deepen our relationship with god and at the same time our relationship with others prayer helps us to do that fasting helps us to seek dependency on god and to also cut away from what draws us away one example i've mentioned addiction to the media being drawn even if it's not addiction spending too much time on the media on the material position accumulating worldly possession fasting invites us and parents to look to god to provide for us rather than seeking our own entertainment almsgiving is a concrete fruit of our prayer and fasting in experiencing the mercy and compassion of our loving and forgiving god we seek to be charitable to people around us through generous arms giving we give to those in need these three lantern practices are to be carried out together hand in hand so pray fast and give generously and may we all be blessed during this season of land amen shortly we begin with blessing and distribution of ashes [Music] blessing of ashes dear brothers and sisters let us ask let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on the heads in magnitudes oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to the works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing only your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lantern observances they may be worthy to come with minds make peo to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our lord amen and for the distribution of ashes i will use this formula repent and believe in the gospel wing [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] dear brothers and sisters rest of the faithful we continue to pray for peace in the world especially in ukraine the father who sees all that is done in secret will reward reward us with our hearts set up for repentance let us now bring all our needs to our merciful and loving father the response to each petition is lord in your mercy hear us for our church leaders may our pope bishops priests religious and lay leaders be filled with humility wisdom and courage as the leaders in our journey of faith let us pray to the lord lord in your mercy hear us for the world and the whole human race that god may bind the human family in ties of love friendship and mutual acceptance let us pray to the lord lord lord in your mercy hear us for god's divine intervention to overcome covet 19 in our nation and the whole world let us pray to the lord r lord in your mercy hear us for peace in ukraine that world leaders will refrain from any action that would cause more suffering to the people destabilize the coexistence between nations and discredited international law let us pray to the lord r lord may your mercy hear us for all christians that we may always remember our total dependence on god and our constant need for repentance and renewal in order that we may walk in his light let us pray to the lord lord in your mercy hear us for ourselves that this season of repentance and prayer may truly draw us closer to god let us pray to the lord r lord in your mercy hear us that we may be more generous in sharing our goods with the poor and needy through prayer fasting and arms giving let us pray to the lord r r lord in your mercy us loving father you are god of tenderness and compassion slow to anger reaching graciousness and ever ready to forgive accept our lantern acts of penance and bring us to the joy of the glorious day of easter we make this prayer through christ our lord amen so blessed are you lord god of all creation for true your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth work of human hands it will become the bread of life forever [Music] blessed are you lord god of all creation for truly your goodness we have received the wine we offer you root of the vine work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink bless us be god so pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty lord father the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name and the good of the lord his holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of land we entreat you a lot that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and ranks forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit give up your heart relieve them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self denier should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and to help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts have an earth of full of your glory o zaana in the highest [Music] who comes in the name of the lord let's come to the table of the sacrifice of our lord jesus the altar of the cross where jesus offers us his life a sacrifice of love to strengthen us and let us come with a prayerful heart you are indeed holy o lord the found of all holiness make holiday for these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them lord the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was entered he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant we shall be poured out for you and for many all the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your devil lord and profess your resurrection [Music] the voice we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that while taking off the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope simon our archbishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died to your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages remain merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] jesus invited us in the gospel to pray unceasingly and he gave us these words that we can turn to god our loving father and now as we also pray for ukraine and for what peace and so at a serious command formed by divine teaching we day to pray our father who art in heaven i will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days peace in ukraine peace in the world that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we aware the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your bosses peace i leave you my peace i give you lord look not on our sins but look on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen peace of the lord be with you always and we receive your spirits let us offer each other the sign of peace let's count jesus grant peace upon the world lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] you take away the sins of the world mercy on us [Music] you take away the sins of the world grant us behold the lamb of god he hold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb [Music] lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only said the word then my soul shall be healed [Music] so communion and tiffany he who ponders the law of the lord day and night will yield fruit induced citizens as we now prepare for spiritual communion on ash wednesday let us ask jesus the bread of life spiritual food from heaven will nourish us strengthen us and above all in this time of fasting and prayer we offer for the intention for world peace and for peace and ukraine we now invite you at home to make an act of spiritual communion let us recite together prayerfully my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen so so let us pray may the sacrament we have received sustain us o lord that our lenten fast may be pleasing to you and before us a healing remedy through christ our lord amen so during this season of land commencing today ash wednesday 2nd of march it will go all the way to good friday on 15 april 2022 let us lift the lantern observances by praying fasting and penance and arms giving so we pray we eat less and eat simple leave a simple lifestyle and give the money safe to the poor and needy you can do so through the lantern appeal through the boxes or through the church collection and through the red boxes that children can also contribute so let the lesson of the poor widow with her last two pennies teach us how to trust in the lord's mercy and providence jesus tells us that this poor widow in her poverty has put in all she has to live on luke chapter 21 verse 1-4 this poor widow depended on god trust in god so during this land though each of us may be struggling from the impact of this pandemic on our economy over the last two years we can always share what we have we give out of our poverty and we trust in our generous lord who wants to bless and generously supply our spiritual emotional and even physical needs luke chapter 6 verse 38 assures us give and there will be gifts for you a full measure rest down shaken together and running over will be poured into your lab because the amount you measure out will be the amount you will be given at back luke chapter 6 verse 38 when we are generous with god god will be even more generous because he is a merciful and loving father and now invoke god's blessing upon all of us as we begin this season of land the lord be with you and with your spirits pour out a spirit of compunction oh lord on those who bow before your majesty and by your mercy may that merit the rewards you promised to those who do penance through christ our lord amen and may the blessing of almighty god the father the son and holy spirit come down and remain with you and your family forever amen amen go in peace glorifying the lord by your life thanks be to god [Music] you
