so let us all rise for the scenario prayer we stand before your holy spirit as we gather together in your name with you alone to guide us make yourself at home in our hearts teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it we are weak and sinful do not let us promote disorder do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path and all partially influence our actions let us find in you our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right all this we ask of you who are that work in every place and time in the communion of the father and the son forever and ever amen welcome dear sisters and brothers in christ to our live-streaming mass on this first sunday of land in this time of our spiritual spring cleaning let us invite commit the holy spirit be with you all [Music] so my dear friends we come together to celebrate the eucharist today even though we cannot gather together in numbers in the churches i mean rather this particular church but we are united with you those who are following online this must be united with you in spirit and jesus is present wherever we are gathered together in his name today in today's first reading we are reminded that god is ever loving ever always think about us that is our god i just quote from today's reading it is said the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand and outstretched harm and with great terror and with signs and wonders the lord has done great wonders in our lives and he showed himself to us every day whenever we united with him in prayer for the time we've taken this lord for granted let us turn to him ask for pardon and mercy i confess almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i failed to do through my fall through my fall through my most grievous fall therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us everlasting life [Music] is and you need the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priests shall take the pannier from your hand and laid before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering aramaian he went into egypt and find refuge there few in numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw the almighty says the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust upon you no evil shall fall no plague approach where you dwell for you has he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways leave with me o lord in my distress they shall bear you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against a stone on the lion and the wiper you will tread and trample the young lion and the dragon with me o lord in my distress his love he sat on me so i will rescue him protect him for he knows my name when he calls i shall answer i am with you i will save him in distress and give him glory be with me o lord in my distress a reading from the letter of sin paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask for his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] [Applause] [Music] man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mount of god [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you filled with the spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this stone to turn into a loaf but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and glory of these kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall be all yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time [Music] the gospel of our lord jesus christ jesus christ dear friends in christ the gospel today intends to unravel the message behind jesus's temptation therefore for reflection today i would like to break the word of god with a theme our relationship with god determines our resistance in temptations our relationship with god determines our resistance in temptations so let us reflect on this theme from the word of god the first reading described the israelites offering their first fruits in thanksgiving to god recalling their freedom from slavery and for the guidance and strength received in the midst of their trials in the midst of their temptations while wandering in the desert for 40 years prior to presenting this offering before they brought the offering to be presented moses urged the israelites to explicitly make their profession of faith therefore the rituals served as a reminder to them to live always in total dependence in god and never to doubt god's love even during their darkest moments of their lives because god had blessed them with everything they had the profession of faith is given a fresh interpretation in the second reading when saint paul in his letter to the romans urged the people to proclaim the god in the resurrection of jesus christ our lord from the dead and sinful emphasized that the unity of the plural members is on the common basic profession of faith in that point saint paul is reminding them that all the greek and the jews can come together united as church in the one common confession of faith and therefore we the church placing our trust in god must express must express our profession our confession of faith with our hearts how through our exemplary lives and the way we live and then to proclaim it with our lips two ways in our hearts through our exemplary lives in the way we live and to proclaim it and to confess it in our lips the encouragement to live our faith and place our trust in god is described in the difficulties in the temptations of jesus himself which he encountered in the gospel where he nevertheless persevered in faithfulness to the mission entrusted to him by the heavenly father and it is essential for us here to note that the temptation of jesus happened immediately after he was baptized he was led by this filled with the spirit he was led from river jordan into the wilderness immediately after the baptism account he was baptized and by accepting baptism jesus showed himself to be in solidarity with humanity that he also experienced all our pain our weaknesses but he never sinned but he knows how we feel that is how we need to understand the baptism also in this context but to share our human condition but to share our human condition and to be solidarity with humanity was a challenge as the devil tempted jesus to use his divine powers to overcome the daily difficulties of humanity by encouraging jesus to turn the stone into a loaf you're hungry so what are you doing there you need food right turn turn the stone into love use your divine powers that was a temptation to jesus the devil tempting jesus next in the second temptation the devil attempted to seduce jesus with personal wealth and power of the worldly kingdom but jesus rejected the offer and declared that true worship true genuine worship is when we use our wealth when we use our power to build and to serve the kingdom of god and finally in the third temptation jesus responded that jesus did not improve to believe the love of his father he trusted in the love of his heavenly father completely the gospel closed my dear friends in christ with the devil left him to return at the appointed time therefore we can say that jesus was constantly struggling with temptation in his public ministry the devil constantly lured jesus to prevent him from accomplishing his mission as the servant messiah the devil desired that jesus used his divine powers for his own convenience for him to escape the pain and suffering of death in that way if the devil succeeded the devil will make him the political messiah according to the jewish expectation but the devil failed miserably so my dear friends in christ what are the implications of the word of god for each one of us how is the word of god inviting each one of us to respond obviously the experience of jesus was also going to be our own experience we'll be constantly tempted therefore the season of land is a favorable time of grace for us to reflect to re-evaluate the quality and direction of our christian living notice twice in the gospel the devil enticed jesus saying if you are the son of god if you are the son of god very tempting indeed jesus is the son of god and at the same time he was fully human but jesus remained true to himself faithful to the mission entrusted to him by the heavenly father and refused to submit to the temptations of the devil and reacting like god the devil wanted jesus to show him his powers to show that he is god and if he does that he will not be able he will avoid his pain suffering and so forth the devil was very smart by resisting the temptations and embracing his humanity fully jesus is telling us that we too are capable to be true to our identity as children of god jesus is telling us that if we maintain a close relationship with god we too may be strengthened with conviction to make the right choices in the face of our temptations which is going to be the part and parcel of our lives next jesus desert experience must also prompt us to reflect our own desert experiences our own area where we are being tempted constantly how are we living and coping with our own desert experiences have you been courageous and persistent in fighting the evil forces of our own desert experiences you know especially in moments when we are tempted to see the signs or to see the proof of god's love and protection for us especially for us and our loved ones we too the third temptation jesus said don't worry god will take care of you sometimes we also fall into the same temptation we want to see the proof of god's love we want to see the proof of god's mercy we want to see the proof of god's protection over us especially when we our loved ones are probably infected with kobe 19 or probably suffering from a terminal disease cancer and then we want to see god show prove to us that he love us that heal us heal the loved one of us if we are suffering a big loss in our business and we pray to god we want god to prove to show us that he loves us by salvaging our business we also sometimes look for some designs like love like this the same temptation in these moments in these moments we are called you know are we able to transform to surrender to god and to transform our desert experiences into opportune moments of recognizing the grace of god in our lives recognizing and believing that god will carry us through that difficulty our trials and weaknesses our temptations are we aware that all these trials temptations and weaknesses are also the privileged moments to experience the grace of god because jesus himself emerged victorious after being tested in every way and therefore we will never be tempted beyond the strength god has given us the reality is on our own we will fail miserably but if we turn to god and place our confidence and trust in god by cementing establishing a strong relationship with god then our relationship with god will bless us with the resistance needed to fight temptations to fight the temptation to fall into sins so my dear friends in christ jesus knows the overwhelming influence temptation have upon us for this reason the compassionate jesus is one whom we can turn to when we are tempted and even after we have fallen into sin this is the compassion of jesus who knows our weaknesses and our struggles and invites us to turn to him when we are tempted invites us to turn to him when we fall into our temptation and sin he is the compassionate merciful lord for us so during this eucharistic celebration we thank god for jesus christ the high priest who sympathizes and empathizes with our weaknesses because he was tempted in every way but never sinned during the season of land let us confidently approach him to receive grace and mercy for all our timely needs great [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] me let us stand and profess our faith together i believe in god christ is the only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit and born of the virgin mary was crucified in the buried he ascended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there you will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting amen with the total faith in god our father and through jesus let us pray for all our needs for the mystical body of christ that we will prepare the soil of our hearts by giving up all that stands between god and us water it through his word that transforms and enriched by looking
