David Blaine Teaches Conan & Andy Card Tricks - "Late Night With Conan O'Brien"

man i love the reactions you get doing these tricks i really when you're out on the street with these people so let's start us off right right first off with the trick do you have a marker i brought one if you don't um i got a i got a magic marker here yeah here's the idea okay from in the deck i want you to i mean look at the deck you could just choose one take a card out okay any one all right yeah and i want you to write your name big across the face of the card and don't worry if i see it yet it doesn't matter okay here we go i write my name big boss places here so everybody can see the card and then show it to people yeah great now look stick it up stick it in the deck just stick it anywhere that's good it doesn't matter here's the idea the first part is a is a quick move see i make the card hold your hand out i make the card jump up well if you saw it it actually jumped up to the top i think this is it oh it might not be it here let's see oh we got it all right thank god okay all right look the next part here no no watch so look conan put your other hand on top of the card like a sandwich okay yeah remember this card the four spades can you all see that yeah like if i wave the four you might feel that did you feel anything i feel a tingling in my lower body look so you're calm oh look at that just left your hands look inside of your hand conan look inside ah oh man that is i felt nothing you know that is so cool i mean this in this in this day of of incredible stunts that magicians do and they bring out these giant props it's these tricks were like i'm right here i don't know how you're doing it it doesn't seem humanly possible that's more impressive to me than the smoke and the fog and let's saw a horse in half you know i like it better which you'll do later you're going to saw a horse a nest okay we're going to do another one first of all how did you get into this how did you start getting into magic i just always wanted to be a professional you got the look and everything it's great that's what he wanted so it was dentist lawyer you didn't care no it didn't matter all right when i was four i would stand in the middle of an empty room and i would just disappear from there okay that sort of eliminates dentist all right uh let's let's let's try another one can i see that marker again yeah right here here andy this is for you oh thank you great andy thinks that's it he's just happy he's getting a pen which card do you want take one out the ace of diamonds good just put it uh face up right here all right and write your name big across the face i can't write it's an abc after school special right there okay could everybody can see this card andy's card so like what i do is i place it into about i mean i'm estimating but this is about center if i hit it just like that the card will actually pop up to the top here we'll do it again look andy pick up about half of the deck we'll drop the card in the middle you put them on top perfect watch closely you turn over the top card scene again but wait wait now that you all know it's coming we'll do it again this time we'll leave it like this protruding so you can see your name so here's what happens it goes in about 12 cards down plus another 10 so it's 22 if i hit it again it comes up but now wait no no the only way to make them several people in the audience are leaving right now this is the work of the devil well look andy andy here's a good part let's say we bend the card that's called a crimp you could see the bend in the card we'll leave it like this protruding so you can see that right cards go right on top look see what happens ah okay how do you do that that freaks me out a little bit that last one with the crimp i this is not a sophisticated show we can't do tricks with cameras uh that was uh really amazing you know it's funny because you're getting some of the same reactions here in the studio but but you really do when you when you walk around the streets of new york and you do these tricks for people you get amazing reactions what what is the most extreme reaction you've gotten from people well one time this girl had asthma i didn't know it before i started doing magic so i'm doing these simple things to her and somebody whispered into her ear he's a devil which i guess she took literally and she had an asthma attack and oh another one she's fine now yeah now she's okay good now we can laugh and what else oh another time is uh one girl i was in atlantic city and i was doing magic to these three girls and the one girl took it to such a level that she actually wet her pants [Applause] there's the siskel and ebert two thumbs up and then and you know there's the next level you know david now that you mention it when you crimp that well never mind we had the uh we had the couch scotch guarded a long time ago now uh can you uh can you show us anything anything else before we well did you did you want me to sort of demonstrate how one is done for everybody yeah and we got time right all right let's see here's the idea we use four well for now hold both of your hands out okay great so just remember this card it's kind of just remember ace of spades i think i can do that okay good we'll put ace of spades on the right hand so that's all you have to remember and then ace of clubs you put on their left hand like this here me put it there did everybody see those or ace of spades ace of clubs right now here's the move watch you get them to look upwards and when they look upwards you do that move and they're licking into your eyes so they won't see it that is the lamest thing i've ever seen sorry about that well look hold on conan look see the uh oh all right thanks someone shouted out he is the devil the audience is now getting pitchforks that's incredible that's amazing really and and i gotta that's it pretty much right that's all we got time for we can do it do we want to do one more thing we got time for we got time for one more let let's do this one the devil yeah okay i'm not all right actually i am not you know when the devil does arrive and he's accused he's gonna say i am not okay that's how you'll know he's the devil okay so um this will do to andy and actually everybody at home watching could try this as well so here's what we'll do we'll get rid of a few cards these okay andy i want you to try to see and i want everybody to come in close so they could see just as well we're going to ask everyone at home to really pay attention to this show for the first time ever okay really look closely and try to see a card from in this portion not the nine of hearts but look try to see one nice it was too quick here we'll do it again look closely try to see a card if you can okay did he get one yeah okay good don't say it i'm not gonna guess it i know that first of all i know this is not the card i know you wouldn't choose the seven of spades but look andy hold the seven for a second great name your card out loud ace of diamonds ace shoot ace of diamonds look turn over the seven of spades so they can see oh man i prayed to you to get this job remember uh we got to mention the abc special you they're now dawning on them what i'm talking about the uh you've got an abc special later this season and this is just the tip of the iceberg yeah stuff you're doing yeah it'll be really really and i should tell people how david came to us and came to the offices and and did some stuff in my in my office and it just freaked me out so much and we thought we got to have this guy on the show it's Is David Blaine one of the best at the ambitious card trick? I’ve seen him so many variants of it and it’s always impressive.

The guy barely got through it and still absolutely smashed it. That was a lotta fun!

His appearance, his voice, his show all play a role in this and even though the tricks are simple, he shows how much of an effect you can accomplish with these. I don't like him too much as showman, but damn he is good at it.

Through this video he gets so much mileage from one technique — but I have absolutely zero clue how he did Andy's first effect at 2:55! Awesome stuff
