are repeated in each of those languages at the conclusion of the audience the holy father will greet italian speakers before leading at the faithful of the faithful in the chanting of the our father which is prayed in lenin and because of its universality and then after the chanted pattern oster the holy father gives his apostolic blessing and the blessing of pope francis is available not only to those present in the audience hall but also to everyone listening live to this broadcast as well as family and friends and loved ones especially the elderly the young the sick and newlyweds for those of you listening in on the radio you can hear hold our holy father pope francis has arrived in the audience hall on the stage and is making his way to his seat and turns to greet the faithful who are present today foreign and now we will hear the scriptural reading in the various languages the libro de you a a reading from the book of genesis this is the list of the generations of adam when god created man he made him in the likeness of god male and female he created them when adam had lived 130 years he became the father of a son in his own likeness after his image and named him seth the days of adam after he became the father of seth were 800 years and he had other sons and daughters thus all the days that adam lived were 930 years the word of the lord genesis [Music] god has [Music] a genesis [Music] is foreign foreign foreign foreign the biblical account of the genealogies of the old testament one is immediately struck by their tremendous longevity we're talking about centuries when does old age begin here you could ask what's the significance of the fact that these ancient fathers lived so long after fathering their children fathers and sons lived together for centuries this passage of time in terms of centuries narrated in a ritualist style confers a profound symbolic meaning to the relationship between longevity and genealogy it's through the transmission of human life so new in the created universe demanded a slow and prolonged initiation everything is new at the beginnings of the history of a creature whose spirit and life conscience and freedom sensibility and responsibility the new life human life immersed in the tension between its origin in the image and likeness of god and the fragility of his mortal condition represents a novelty to be discovered and it requires a long initiation period in which mutual support among generations is indispensable in order to decipher experiences and ex and confront the enigmas of life during this time the spiritual quality of man is also slowly cultivated in a certain sense every passing epoch in human history offers this feeling again it's as if we had to start over calmly from the beginning with our questions on the meaning of life when the scenario of the human condition appears crowded with new experiences and hitherto unasked questions certainly the accumulation of cultural memory increases the familiarity necessary to face new passages the time of transmission are reduced but the times of assimilation always require patience the excess of speed which by now is an obsession in every stage of our life makes every experience more superficial and less nourishing young people especially are unconscious victims of this split between between the time on the clock that needs to be rushed along and the times of life that require a proper leavening a long life enables these long times and the damages of haste to be experienced old age certainly imposes a slower pace but they are not merely times of inertia indeed the measure of these rhythms opens up for all spaces of meaning of life unknown to the obsession with speed losing contact with the slower rhythms of old age closes up these spaces to everyone it's from this perspective that i want to establish the feast of grandparents on the last sunday of july the alliance between the two extreme generations of life young children and the elderly also helps the other two generations young people and adults to bond with each other so as to make everyone's existence richer in humanity the holy fathers say now that he wants to build a dialogue between the different generations and he's talking about how the young needs to appreciate the the the roots uh by knowing their grandparents by knowing their elders and without those roots they will not grow up well so it's important to have uh uh especially important for this dialogue between generations have the two extremes the very young and the elderly grandparents and their grandchildren to be in that dialogue and to communicate with one another and share their experiences one another well let us imagine the pope says a city in which the coexistence of the different ages forms an integral part of the overall plan of its habitat let's think about the formation of affectionate relationships between old age and youth that irradiate out into the overall style of relations the overlapping of the generations would become a source of energy for truly visible and livable humanism the modern city tends to to be hostile to the elderly and not by chance also to children the excessive speed puts us in a centrifuge that sweeps its way like confetti and one completely loses sight of the bigger picture each person holds on to his or her own piece the floats on the currents of the city market for which a slower pace means losses and and with the idea that speed is money the expense the excess of speed pulverizes life it does not make it more intense important to take time with your children to waste time with your children but this wasting time this losing time uh by spending it with your children builds up the human family and spending time with with your children and with your with your parents and grandparents the pandemic in which we're still being forced to live has imposed and unfortunately very painfully a pause in this obtuse cult of speed in this period grandparents have acted as a barrier to the affective dehydration of the youngest the visible alliance of the generations that harmonizes paces and rhythms restores to us the hope of not living life in vain and it restores each of us the love for our vulnerable lives blocking the way to an obsession with speed which simply consumes our lives we're always agitated by uh the need for speed by the need to move along to hurry on and by having a relationship with the with the young and with the old helps us regulate the pace of our lives the rhythms of old age are an indispensable resource for grasping the meaning of life marked by time the destination of life to the encounter with god becomes more credible a design that is hidden in the creation of the human being in god's image and likeness and that is sealed in the son of god jesus christ becoming man today there's a greater longevity of human life this gives us the opportunity to increase the covenant between all times of life and also with the meaning of life in its entirety life cannot be broken up easily into different ages we experience uh life is the whole experience from birth until old age grant us the intelligence and strength for this reform because this is a reform the arrogance of the time of the clock a need for for speed must be converted into the beauty of the rhythms of life [Music] the the time of hurry that's connected to to the clock must be converted into the beauty of the rhythms of life and thus the alliance of the generations is indispensable and without without the dialogue and relationship between the different ages uh society becomes uh sterile and we're left alone may god help us to find the right music for this harmonization between the diverse ages between the very young of the very old and adults all together and this will be a beautiful symphony in dialogue the holy father's remarks for today's general audience those will be available on the holy see website a little later this morning including in english we'll also have a summary of the holy father's remarks on our vatican news portal after the audience concludes this morning can willingly extends to all children and young people the elderly and the sick his holiness also intends to bless any religious articles you may have brought for this purpose the following is a summary of the holy father's words this morning dear brothers and sisters in continuing our catechesis on the meaning and value of old age viewed in the light of god's word we now consider the contribution that the elderly can make to the development of a truly humane society one in which every age group has something to offer the elderly have much to teach us about the meaning of life theirs is a wisdom matured over time that can help us to face the ever new questions and challenges raised by today's rapidly evolving society for this reason i wish to set aside a special day in july to honor grandparents in the elderly the covenant between young and old indispensable for a healthy social life can help us amid today's frenetic pace of life to remember that as men and women made in the image of god we are called to a fuller vision of our life together rediscovering god's presence in our midst and caring for the needs of our brothers and sisters may we recognize the importance of the elderly among us and learn from them that the true rhythms of life are those not of the stopwatch but of the harmonious relationship between the generations the holy father will now greet the
