son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit so good morning everyone good morning father welcome to parishioners saint mary's those who are visiting and those who are watching online today i would just like to remind everyone for those who are doing the ninth first friday devotion to the sacred heart today is the first friday of the month okay so brothers and sisters has acknowledged our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries you were sent to heal the contrite of hearts lord of mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy may mighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray show gracious favor o lord we pray to the works of penance we have begun that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake to our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah shout out do not hold back lift up your voice like a trumpet announce to my people their rebellion to the house of jacob their sins yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their god they ask of me righteous judgments they delight to draw near to god why do we fast but you do not see why humble yourself ourselves but you do not notice look you serve your own interest on your fast day and oppress all your workers look you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high is such the fast that i choose a day to humble oneself is it to bow down in the head like a bulrush and to lie in sackcloth and ashes will you call this fast a day acceptable to the lord is not this the fast that i choose to loose the bonds of injustice to undo the thongs of the yoke to let the oppressed go free and to break every yoke is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house when you see the naked to cover them and not to hide yourself from your own kin then your light shall break forth like the dawn and your healing shall spring up quickly your vindicator shall go before you the glory of the lord shall be your rear guard then you shall call and the lord will answer you shall cry for help and he will say here i am the word of the lord thanks be to god the response to the psalm broken humbled heart oh god you will not scorn a broken humbled heart oh god you will not scorn have mercy on me o god according to your steadfast love according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions [Music] wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin a broken humbled heart o god you will not scorn for i know my transgressions and my sin is ever before me against you you alone have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight a broken humbled heart o god you will not scorn for you have no delight in sacrifice if i were to give a burnt offering you would not be pleased the sacrifice acceptable to god is a broken spirit a broken and contrite heart oh god you will not despise [Music] a broken humbled heart o god you will not scorn please stand for the gospel acclamation [Applause] praise to you lord king of eternal glory praise to you lord king of eternal glory [Music] seek good and not evil so that you may live and the lord will be with you praise to you lord king of eternal glory [Music] the lord with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you o lord the disciples of john came to jesus saying why do we and the pharisees fast often but your disciples do not fast and jesus said to them the wedding guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them can they the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them and then they will fast the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ i've read this very very good book called start with why and the author of that book is simon sinek how many of you have read that book start with by it's a very good book it says that you can't start with what how but you need to start with why because when you know the why it will motivate you to do what you need to do okay and i see that also with regards to fasting many of us maybe starts with what are we gonna fast on but we need to always start with the why because if we have the the right reason for fasting it will bear fruit okay and just like in our first reading right uh in our first reading from isaiah chapter 58 it says there is not this the fast that i choose okay so what's the the fruit of the fast is to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house and to see the naked be covered so that's the fruit of fasting so that we will be able to love god and love others better and uh i i'm just gonna share something from uh i'm using this exodus 90 program and then there's meditation for today day three of of lent it says there why do christians fast and uh why should you know that the denying of some physical nourishment be so significant as a spiritual practice okay it says here what happens in the physical realm has consequences in the spiritual realm what we do with the visible things affects invisible things okay so for reasons we don't fully understand fasting when accompanied by prayer mysteriously opens up the spiritual world to us and that's what fasting do it empties us and make us more open to the spiritual okay and um i'll just like to share with you three reasons uh first one is fasting is an expression of repentance okay we're uh we're mourning mourning from our sin and we're truly sorry okay we're truly sorry to god for our sin uh you know in in the blood the beatitude one of the beatitudes says blessed are those who mourn mourn for sins especially the sin of selfishness okay and the second reason that we're fasting is that we fast to fight against the enemy okay fasting with prayer saps the strength of the devil and unleashes the grace of heaven in uh daniel the the prophet daniel in uh in the book chapter 10 it says that daniel was fasting at that time i was mourning for three weeks i did not eat any rich food or any meat drink any wine or calm my hair until the three weeks were passed and because of that fasting okay he was able to gain power over the demonic prince of the kingdom of persia okay so that's from daniel chapter 10 verse 13. so fasting is one of our spiritual weapons to assault strongholds of darkness the third reason why we fast is to gain mastery over our passions it says here feeding our physical desires make them grow stronger and denying them weakens their hold on us okay and uh in saint paul in one corinthians chapter 10 wrote this he was talking about an athlete right in one corinthians chapter 9 verse 25 every athlete in training submits to strict discipline in order to be crowned with a reed that will not last but we do it for one that will last forever i harden my body with blows and bring it under complete control to keep myself from being disqualified after having called others to the contest so i was like thinking about fasting it's like removing the spiritual fat in us so that we will become spiritually lean right so that we'll be able to run faster in this race and and uh so and by that you know fasting trains us to say no to our immediate cravings and it gives us the self mastery to rule our natural powers for the sake of love okay so so let's embrace this time of fasting you know as we mourn for our sins to unleash spiritual power against our enemies and also to rule our passions by fasting we give god space in our lives let us ask the lord to strengthen us in self-denial that we may set our minds and hearts firmly on him that as followers of christ we may conform to the precepts of our heavenly father let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that god's people may persevere in the in their lenten sacrifices let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that all who deny themselves for the lord's sake may find happiness with him let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the sick and the dying and those who are faced with life's sorrow may be filled with god's grace let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that our deceased relatives and friends may freely share in the life of god let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the special intentions of this mass for the repose of the soul of alexander bosher let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer heavenly father grant us a strength to devote ourselves to a life in the spirit that we may rise now above our weaknesses and share fully in the resurrection of our lord jesus christ amen amen come back to me with all your heart don't let fear keep us apart trees to bend though straight and tall so must we to others call long have i waited for your calming home to me and living deeply our new life the wilderness [Music] will lead you [Music] to your heart where i will speak integrity and just us with tenderness you shall know [Music] have i waited for your coming home to me and living deeply our new life [Music] long have i waited for your coming to me and living deeply our new life pray brothers and sisters my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept this sacrifice into your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church we pray almighty god the true partaking of this mystery we may be cleansed of all our misdeeds and so be suited for the remedies of your compassion through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift him up unto the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for now you have given your church a sacred time for the renewing and purifying of their hearts that freed from disordered affections they may so deal with the things of this passing world as to hold rather to the things that eternally endure and so with all the angels and saints we praise you as without end we acclaim holy holy holy [Music] in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the jew fall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at a time was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was sended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as you celebrate the remoral of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and a chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope marcel our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in of their resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we are married to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Laughter] at a savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not to temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil grace they grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but in the fate of your church and grace they grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed act of spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least ritually into my heart i embrace you as if you're ready there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen so we get some uh a directive from the archdiocese that it's uh okay now to receive by the tongue so i just ask for those who would like to receive by the tongue to just come towards the end and then just go to the altar rails there so after i distribute to the people who would like to receive by the hand after that i'll give you the communion okay so in christ alone my hope is found he is my light my strength my song this cornerstone this solid ground firm through the fiercest route and storm what heights of love what depths of peace when tears are fisted when striving cease my comforter my all in all here in the love of christ i stand in christ alone who took on flesh fullness of god in helpless babe this gift of love and righteousness by the ones he came to save till on that cross as jesus died the wrath of god was satisfied for every sin on him was laid here in the death of christ i live there in the ground his body lay light of the world by darkness lame then bursting forth in glorious day up by the grave he rose again and as he stands in victory since curse has lost its grip on me for i am his and he is mine but by the precious blood of christ no guilt in life no fear in death this is the power of christ in me from life's first cry to final breath jesus commands my destiny no power of hair no scheme of man can ever block me from his hand till he returns or calls me home here in the power of christ i'll stand so oh let us pray we pray almighty god the true partaking of this mystery we may be cleansed of all our misdeeds and so be suited for the remedies of your compassion through christ our lord amen so have a blessed day to everyone thank you father you too the lord be with you and with your spirit may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit amen go in peace thanks be to god saint michael the archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and the thou prince of the heavenly hosts by the power of god cast into all satan and all the evil spirits who prowl to the world seeking the ruin of souls amen mary pure and lowly virgin mother undefiled sing of god's own son most holy who became her little child there is the lord who came to earth word made flesh our very brother takes our nature by his birth [Applause]
