and the love of god the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit so good morning everyone welcome to parisian of the saint mary's those who are visiting and those who are watching online it's just good to see some form of normalcy you know we don't need the social distancing anymore so it's good where's the white ribbons i think somebody burned it but uh of course the archbishop's still asking us to to wear masks okay so we're now at the lenten season and today is ash wednesday it's the start of this 40-day period and i truly believe there's a special grace during lenten system because if there's no special grace why do we have a lenten season right so there's a special grace that the lord is giving us uh in this lenten season so uh let's take hold of that okay so brothers and sisters has acknowledged our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries you were sent to heal the contrite of hearts oh sorry we'll do that i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have gravely sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and to you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god [Music] lord of mercy [Music] see [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] lord of lords let us pray grant o lord that we may begin this the with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with all your heart with fasting with weeping and with mourning rend your hearts not your clothing return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relents from punishing who knows whether the lord will not turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him a grain offering and a drink offering to be presented to the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion sanctify a fast call a solemn assembly gather the people sanctify the congregation assemble the aged gather the children even infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her canopy between the vestibule and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep let them say spare your people o lord and do not make your heritage a mockery a byword among the nations why should it be said among the peoples where is there god then the lord became jealous for his land and he had pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god oh [Music] have mercy o lord for we have sinned [Music] have mercy o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god according to your steadfast love according to your abundant mercy blood out my transgressions wash me through free for my inequity and grant me for my sin [Music] of mercy o lord for we have sinned for i know my transgressions and my sin is ever before me against you you're alone [Music] evil in your sight have mercy o lord for we have sinned created me a clean earth oh god and put a new and right spirit in me again do not cast me away from your presence [Music] and sorry that's my sheet here [Music] and i take your holy spirit for me have mercy o lord for we have sinned [Music] restore to me the joy of your salvation and sustaining me a willing spirit [Music] oh lord open my lips and my mouth will they care your praise have mercy o lord for we have sinned have mercy on for we have sinned [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ since god is making his appeal through us we entreat you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake god made christ to be sin who knew no sin so that in christ we might become the righteousness of god as we work together with him we urge you also not to accept the grace of god in vain for the lord says at an acceptable time i have listened to you and on a day of salvation i have helped you see now is the acceptable time see now is the day of salvation the word of the lord [Music] glory and praise to you oh lord jesus christ glory and praise to you oh lord jesus christ today do not harden your hearts but listen to the voice of the lord glory and praise to you o lord jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew gloria she said to the disciples beware of practicing your piety before people in order to be seen by them for then you have no reward from your father in heaven so whenever you give alms do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be praised by others truly i tell you they have received the reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your alms may be done in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you pray do not be like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners so that they may be seen by others truly i tell you they have received the reward but whenever you pray go into your room and shut the door and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you fast do not look this small like the hypocrites for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting truly i tell you they have received the reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that by your fast so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you the gospel of the lord i don't know if i'm correct if i'm to say that many people think that lenten season is just about fasting how many of you think that way that many people would think that way that lenten season is more so just about fasting what you need to give up okay yeah right but fat but fasting is just part of length it's not the whole length what's the lenten season about what's the root of the lenten season okay the lenten season of course we have to examine our heart we have to look into our hearts why do we need we need to look into our hearts because it's from our heart that we're with that where we sin right in matthew chapter 5 verse 19 it says there for out of the heart come evil intentions murder adultery fornication teff false witness slander it's from the heart that's why lenten season is kind of a prolonged examination of the heart and i hope what we see what we see the sin in our heart we would weep we would weep for our sin and we don't see that anymore right now many people just living in sin and it's not affected by it anymore that's what happened right we see sins of abortion sexual immorality rampant okay euthanasia all those things and people are not weeping we need to ask for that grace for the grace to weep for our sin because we see how because of our sin it drove us far away from the lord and it has also separated us from each other that's why there's a lot of infighting happening we need to ask for the grace to weep for our sin and that we mourn we mourn for our sin and for those who mourn the lord promises blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted okay and and and the the thing is we it should show how we are really sorry for our sin we repent that's where why we need to fast fast is a sign of repentance okay and and somebody asked me father what's the significance of fasting during lent okay the significance of fasting is that when you fast hopefully this will make you make some sacrifice and also detach you from the things of this world so that you will be able to pray better to be able to pray from the heart and you also need to pray so that you could fast because if it's going to make you a bigger sacrifice to fast it's going to be hard for you and it's just so easy for you to give up but with prayer it will give you the grace to persevere in your fasting it will also check your motives why are you fasting why are you fasting so prayer and fasting it's like the two side of a coin it must go together but it's not the end it's a means what's the end so that you'll be able to love better that's why when you're fasting and you're getting cranky you better check why are you fasting and are you praying when you're fasting right the end we should be able to love better okay and and and right now we need to repent not just an individual as individual but we need to repent as a nation right we need to repent as a nation we see a lot of sins happening right now laws being implemented that is against the will of god i've mentioned it already sin of abortion sin of you to nature suppression of freedom with a just unjust means there's a lot of sin we're seeing and because because it is being enacted by the government some people think it's okay it's okay it's lawful but is it in accordance with the will of god that's why we need to repent we need to pray for our government leaders that they would see their sins that they would repent also so that all of us as a nation we repent we see what's happening right now we're already two years in covin [Music] we don't know how long will this take we don't know if this will really be an endemic war going on right now in ukraine you see you see the consequences of our sin and the lord does not want that but the lord permits that the lord permits that in order to discipline us to awaken us from our slumber that we will be able to wake up and be able to see our sins that we need to repent from them into 2 chronicles chapter 7 verse 14 it says there if my people who are called by my name humble themselves pray seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then i will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land that's a promise that's the promise by the lord to all of us but we need to do our part we need to repent as a nation not just individual but as a nation so let's ask for that graces have said this slenden season there's a special grace for us to be able to see our sin and mourn and weep so that we would repent and the goal the lord and what's the goal of this lenten season is so that we would return to the lord that's the greatest desire of the lord that we would return to him that's why when we examine our hearts we don't just examine our hearts by himself because if we just examine our hearts and not having faith in the lord we will just get this courage we must have that faith in the lord and what is our faith in the lord it says there in our first reading today we have faith in the lord for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relents from punishing so please remain seated i'm just gonna go to the blessing and distribution of ashes so where's the where's the ashes [Music] oh wait here it's here okay dear brothers and sisters that assembly asked god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we'll put out put on our heads in penitence o god who desire not the death of sinners but their conversion mercifully hear our prayers and in your kindness be pleased to bless these ashes which we intend to receive upon our heads that we who acknowledge we are but ashes and shall return to dust may true a steadfast of servants of land gain pardon for sins and newness of life after the likeness of your risen son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen okay so now um just form in line here in the middle so uh [Music] so [Music] at the foot of the cross [Music] you have shown me your love to the judgment you [Laughter] received and you won my heart and you won my heart now i can trade these ashes in for beauty and where forgiveness like [Music] coming to kiss the feet of mercy i lay every burden down at the foot of the cross [Music] [Music] you have given me life to do for me and you won [Music] now i can take these ashes in for beauty and with forgiveness [Music] [Laughter] [Music] cross [Music] coming to kiss the feet of mercy i lay every burden down at the foot of the crowd [Music] and you won my heart [Music] and you won my heart now i can shade these ashes in for beauty and where forgiveness like [Music] coming to kiss the feet of mercy i lay every burden down [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] coming to kiss the feet of mercy i lay every burden down at the foot of the cross [Music] at the foot of the cross where grace [Music] [Music] [Applause] you received you won my heart and you won my [Music] forgiveness [Music] every bird [Music] at the foot of the cross [Music] [Music] [Laughter] and you want my heart and you won my heart [Music] now i can trade his ashes in for beauty and with more forgiveness like a crown [Music] coming to kiss the feet of mercy [Music] for beauty anywhere forgiveness [Music] please stand we'll offer up our intentions to the lord the penance of lent has begun the sign of the blessed ashes invites us to respond to the god who calls us to come back to him with all our heart let us bring before the father our desire for renewal that as we enter the season of lent we as a church may join christ in his act of sacrifice let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we may discipline ourselves by fasting and self-denial let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we may not close our eyes to the knees of the poor by practical almsgiving and concrete generosity let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we may seek the sacrament of penance especially in the season of grace and renewal let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we may show special care for the sick and those abandoned by society let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the special intentions of this mass for the for the repose of the soul of jane henniger let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god of mercy and compassion look upon the petitions of penitent people may the ashes we receive today truly symbolize our commitment to do your will may our self-denial express our desire to die to self so that way we may live your divine life in us more fully we ask this through christ our lord amen [Music] here's my heart lord [Music] hears my heart lord hears my heart lord [Music] speak what is true [Music] cause i am found i am yours i am loved i make you i have life i can breed i am healed i am free cause you are strong you are sure you are alive you are good always he is my heart [Music] pray brothers and sisters my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and all the good of his holy church okay as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that true works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hopes and powers of heaven we sing the king of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is you comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like that you fall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ascended into the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope marcel our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we are married to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you to your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at a savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not to temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil grace they grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and save from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the fate of your church and true let us pray may the sacrament we have received sustain us o lord that our lenten fast may be pleasing to you and be for us a healing remedy through christ our lord so we've been uh you've received ashes on your forehead and the significance of that too significance right one is that we need to remember that we are dust and to thus we shall return we're mortals we're gonna die someday okay so that's why we need to prepare our hearts and the second significance of this ashes is a time of mourning we're mourning for our sin and we have a commitment to return to the lord to repent from our sin and strive to do god's will okay so when somebody asks you why do you have that black thingy in your forehead okay you have something to say and it's a good it's opportunity for you to evangelize because they know that they're immortals also that they're gonna die that they need to prepare themselves okay so let's be proud so don't don't when you go home oh let's remove this no okay so i was given twice because i'm a great sinner so okay also remember that today is a day of fasting uh and and uh we unite our fasting uh so that peace would happen in ukraine amen amen the lord be with you and with your spirit bow down for the blessing pour out a spirit of compassion o god on those who bow before your majesty and by your mercy may they marry the rewards you promised to those who do penance through christ our lord amen may mighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit amen go in peace thanks be to god say michael the archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and our prince of the heavenly host by the power of god cast into all satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls amen [Music] wonderful so wonderful is your unfailing love your cross has spoken mercy [Music] how glorious [Music] [Music] see [Music] [Music] [Music] have a good day thank you [Applause]
