[Music] the name of the father and the son of the holy spirit amen the grace of o lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all mother brothers and sisters to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries let us now call to mind our sins you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father than the seed for us lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us everlasting life amen let us pray show gracious favor o lord we pray the works of penance we have begun that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord god cry out and full floated and unsparingly lift up your voice like a trumpet blast tell my people their wickedness and the house of jacob their sins they seek me day after day and desire to know my ways like a nation that has done what is just and not abandoned the law of their god they ask me to declare what is due them pleased to gain access to god why do we fast and you do not see it afflict ourselves and you take no note of it lo on your first day you but your disciples did not fast jesus answered them can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegrooms with them the days will come with their bridegroom is taken away from them and then they will fast the gospel of the lord the three spiritual exercises that are associated with the season of lent as we were reminded last wednesday is prayers fasting and good works today again our readings are reminding us that specifically fasting we are always reminded that actions in themselves whatever action it is it is neither good or bad rather they become good or bad depending on what we do with those specific action for example um giving giving in itself is neither good or bad the goodness of the act of giving depends on exactly what we give if i give from my heart that is good but if i give something that i stole that's not good i could be very giving but the one the thing i i gave is not from me but rather something that i stole is that good the same thing with the three spiritual exercises prayers fasting and good works let's focus on fasting fasting fasting in itself is neither good or bad it becomes good or bad depending on how we do it when we fast remember the lord also said that in order to show off the people like i will fast and then i will look gloomy i will look sad i will look so tired and you know every time i would see people i would make sure that i would really appear so tired and so huggered and when people would ask me oh so father how are you i am fasting really and that's why i'm tired you know i am fasting for the lord that fasting is nothing and so the lord said if you fast make sure that you brush your hair wash your face smile every everyone so that people will not know that you are fasting and only the lord who sees what a secret will know that you are fasting and what the lord knows in secret he will reward you too fast is good but as we always say is really doing the right thing for the right reason and at the right time we don't simply fast because it's lent you know i wish the church would say no more fasting because it's land okay why should you fast not only because it is lent because i know that it helps me to become a better person that the things we do prayer fasting and almsgiving are things that we do exactly and precisely because it helps us to become closer to god to become better persons that we become transformed because of the things that we do not to show off the people but rather because we would like to grow in our relationship with god why do i pray because i would like to grow in my relationship with god and by being prayerful i become more loving to others why do i fast because i would like to grow in my relationship with god and by fasting i become closer to god and become more loving to others why do i give ams because i would like to grow in my relationship with god i would like to become more loving to others that's why they asked the disciples of saint john are asking the lord today hey jesus we know you are a teacher it's supposed to be fasting time why is it that you are not fasting we are fasting the pharisees are fasting everybody else is fasting it's the trend it's the season why are you not fasting you are wrong the lord said there's always time and reason for the things that we do including spiritual things because otherwise even if the very good spiritual things that we do prayers math for example even good works if we are doing them not for the right reason they become meaningless and useless you know even when we pray as we you know i think what's that's one of the concrete examples you know when we pray especially the the memorized prayers that we know rosaries novenas you know i'm sure some of the venus the naveena the lady of lords and i think you practically have memorized that because and we used to pray that here every monday evening and not now the veena to the mother perpetual help you know since we have been i remember as a kid even as a kid and as uh young seminarians we have been praying that until today i have memorized that the mysteries of the rosary and sometimes because we have memorized that the prayers sometimes become meaningless like hail mary full of grace the lord is with you blessed oh that's a very nice ceiling out there holy mary how many hail marys are we sometimes we get distracted why because we've memorized it prayer is good but how do we do that and for what reason again the question today is very important and the answer of the lord is very important why are you not fasting the lord said there is always reason for fasting doing the right thing at the right moment for the right reason so again today i think the challenge for us is really to examine ourselves in this whole season of lent what are the things that are useful what are the things that are not useful in my spiritual life what are the things that help me to become closer to god and more loving towards others it's a very important considerations the things that we do that help us to become closer to god and more loving to others it's not just about i feel good every time i fast oh i feel so good i feel so nice i feel like i'm the best person every time i pray i feel so good it's not about the feeling of being so good is realizing i am doing these things because i become closer to god and become more loving towards others anything else that do not help us to become more closer to god and more loving to others we probably have to leave them behind but all those things that help us become closer to god and loving to others those are the things that we precisely keep on doing every day so again we pray in this mass today for that gift to give the gift to make our spiritual life really mean a lot to know that my life is dependent on what i do my life in the lord is dependent on what i do not only in what i feel and what i do means the things i do for god and for others with the season of lent for all of us be an opportunity to grow in that relationship and to grow in that desire to become more loving to god and loving to others trusting in the lord's mercy let us know how we turn to god and present our needs we pray for their church throughout the world for all who have been appointed her leaders and for all who share in the one baptism we profess let us pray to the lord we pray for all nations we pray specifically for ukraine and for russia in this time of trouble of conflict of violence a war may the witness of committed christians foster an increased respect for human life let
