blessed be god the father of mercies and god of all comfort who consoles us in all our afflictions in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries lord jesus your mighty god and prince of peace lord have mercy lord jesus you are son of god and son of mary christ have mercy lord jesus your word made flesh and splendor of the father lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray lord our god through the virgin mary you graciously sent jesus christ to be the consolation of your people grant that through her intercession we may be filled with all consolation and share it among our brothers and sisters through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the first book of kings jeroboam thought to himself the kingdom will return to david's house if now this people go up to offer sacrifices in the temple of the lord in jerusalem the hearts of this people will return to their master rehoboam king of judah and they will kill me after taking counsel the king made two calves of gold and said to the people you have been going up to jerusalem long enough here is your god o israel who brought you up from the land of egypt and he put one in bethel the other in dan this led to sin because the people frequented those calves in bethel and in dan he also built temples on the high places and made priests from among the people who were not levites jeroboam established a feast in the eighth month on the fifteenth day of the month to duplicate and bethel the pilgrimage feast of judah with sacrifices to the calves he had made and he stationed in bethel priests of the high places he had built jeroboam did not give up his evil ways after this but again made priests for the high places from among the common people whoever desired it was consecrated and became a priest of the high places this was a sin on the part of the house of jeroboam for which it was to be cut off and destroyed from the earth the word of the lord remember us o lord as you favor your people remember us o lord as you favor your people we have sinned we and our fathers we have committed crimes we have done wrong our fathers in egypt considered not your wonders remember us o lord as you favor your people they made a calf in hereb and adored a molten image they exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating bullock remember us o lord as you favor your people they forgot the god who had saved them who had done great deeds in egypt wondrous deeds in the land of ham terrible things at the red sea remember us o lord as you favor your people hallelujah [Music] one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god hallelujah [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark in those days when there again was a great crowd without anything to eat jesus summoned the disciples and said my heart is moved with pity for the crowd because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat if i send them away hungry to their homes they will collapse on the way and some of them will have come a great distance his disciples answered him where can anyone get enough bread to satisfy them here in this deserted place still he asked them how many loaves do you have they replied seven he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground then taking the seven loaves he gave thanks broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute and they distributed them to the crowd they also had a few fish he said the blessing over them and ordered them to and ordered them distributed also they ate and were satisfied they picked up the fragments left over seven baskets there were about four thousand people he dismissed the crowd and got into the boat with his disciples and came to the region of dalmanutha the gospel of the lord our two readings today uh kind of offer a counterpart part of of of false worship and and right worship um we we see the in the first book of kings this description of so that at this point the kingdom is after you know david's david has has uh gone to the lord and his descendants are now the rulers and but there's a divi division the kingdom has been divided and so there's a northern kingdom and there's a southern kingdom in the southern kingdom of judah where jerusalem is and that's where the temple still is and that's still where right right worship is but in the northern kingdom the king there is well i don't want them going down to jerusalem because they might like it better you know or and then come back here and they'll get rid of me and so i better make in this kingdom some some alternative place to worship and so he uh picks the this establishing a feast on the eighth month 15th day which is one of the one of the pilgrimage feasts that still was held by the by the jewish people it's the the feast of booths uh and it's uh called sukkot is the hebrew word for it and um so he's making basically picking one of their holy days and giving an alternative so you don't need to go down there i want you to come over to uh come over to here stay here and let's and let's build these these false idols to worship and these false priests to to lead you in the worship and it just um you can see the start of something not good you know going down this wrong path of false worship which is going to need to be brought back together eventually um and the lord is the one who brings back together lord jesus and we see in the gospel this example of right worship which is centered on jesus and and centered on well i guess just that it's centered on jesus right and he's establishing as we see this this it's a prefigurement of the eucharist that he's going to be the one we're not going to look at this temple or that temple or this or you know it's got to be centered on the lord right it's got to be centered on the lord and he's going to establish a new form of liturgy a new form of worship that's going to bring it back bring us all back together and it's going to be feasting on him him himself his very self right so that's what we're here today to do but as human beings tend to do we seem to repeat the same things over and over again uh we don't always learn from our history and i'm not gonna you know this isn't a tirade against sports or against what's gonna happen tomorrow um but and i don't know there's some kind of i'm not saying there's a conspiracy theory and some you know nothing like that just human nature we've set up a false worship where um you know 80 000 people will be gathered together in a and i'm a sports fan and i watch sports and i go to games so i'm not this is not again sports are good in many ways until they become distorted until they become a false god right then they're no longer good right they're being set up as a way to lead us to false worship right you can watch a super bowl tomorrow but if you do it without going to church there's a problem right if your sunday is spent worshiping sports in place of worshiping god first that's a major problem right it's a major problem and so uh we we do the best we can you all are here today and i'm assuming you'll be here tomorrow in some way or tonight and you'll put god first and it's it's not a i don't say that to congratulate you i say that that's that's right that's the way things are supposed to be and i think you know that and you think you experience that goodness in your life and um but we've got to be careful we're not better than anybody else all right look at them doing the wrong thing that's not what i'm saying that's not what i want you to have in your in your mind or your heart uh we we're thankful to god that he calls us to write worship and that's that's where we that's the start of our day the start of our week right and then we do other things like enjoy sports and and then and it's by our example um not to shame anybody else it's just our example of that's how the society will change eventually there'll be a point when the super bowl will be gone you know i don't know when a century from now there'll be something else right super bowl won't last but this is what lasts right so we keep choosing the better part and and with our joyful loving witness of christ and what this feast does for us that when we gather that's what's going to change the culture or you'll one by one change our friends and they'll notice and they'll eventually see that you know my team always loses anyways why do i keep coming to this thing you know and eventually one by one people will you know god's patience is always directed towards their salvation so we do our part of of you know we stray in our own ways too right we're we're sinners too so lord cleanse us purify us the ways that we strain that we don't put you first but it's got to start with uh with the sabbath and with right worship and then from that bright worship we go forth into the world joyfully witnessing to christ's love and being a sign of his love and being something that will attract people to wonder about maybe their own choices and what can they do to experience god's love more fully in their lives as well let us humbly draw near to the throne of heaven offering our conditions to our god and king for pope francis and all who serve the church may the lord strengthen them in their mission of bringing the light of christ to a weary world let us pray to the lord for leaders of nations may the prince of peace guide them in pursuing reconciliation and understanding in times of conflict let us pray to the lord for all recovering from addiction may god grant them strength and healing let us pray to the lord for young people in this faith community may the holy spirit provide encouragement and support as they seek to understand what is right and good let us pray to the lord for those who have died especially perpetuo and julia blanco for whom this mass is offered may they come to share in the fullness of life with the risen christ in heaven let us pray to the lord god our father source of every grace and blessing hear our petitions and answer them according to your will through christ our lord amen parish mission prayer you can find on the prayer card in the pews please join me almighty father once again you are at the door and knock during our parish mission you ask us to open the door of our hearts to your abundant mercy rouse us purify and illumine our hearts enter into every home of our parish recall those far off raise the fallen awaken the indifferent strengthen those who seek to be near you may no one refuse your invitation lord expand our hearts so that we may be merciful to others as you are so merciful to us o mary mother of mercy we entrust to you this time of mission may produce abundant fruits in our christian life amen mary queen of peace our lady of seattle you blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we receive the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us a bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we receive the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father receive holy father this offering of our humility which we bring you with joy on this memorial of the blessed virgin mary and grant we pray that it may be for us who are joined to the sacrifice of christ our consolation on earth and our eternal salvation through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just to give you thanks and to bless and praise you almighty and eternal god through christ our lord he was received with joy by the blessed virgin and brought to birth from her chaste womb as the consolation of the world as she endured her bitter agony at the cross of her son she was consoled by you with the hope of his resurrection in company with the apostles she earnestly prayed and awaited with trust the coming of the spirit of consolation and peace now assumed into heaven she consoles with a mother's love all who turn to her with faith until the day of the lord dawns in glory now with all the saints and angels we praise you forever holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest it is truly right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks father most holy excuse me you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and paul our bishop and eusebio his auxiliary bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress in the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed glorious things are spoken of you virgin mary and you all rejoice to find their home please join me in an act of spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen [Applause] let us pray renewed by this paschal sacrament we pray o lord that we who honor the memory of the mother of your son experiencing each day the mystery of death in our bodies may be uplifted by hope from heaven and show forth in our daily lives the good news of the resurrection through christ our lord i'll be away on retreat beginning monday through the next monday beyond that uh so a full week next saturday so father lyle will be here for all the masses uh in my absence however next saturday morning will not be mass it will be a communion and a liturgy of the word and communion led by deacon marco next saturday morning just so you're prepared for that so you're welcome to come and gather and hear the word and and some good preaching and receive the eucharist but it will not be a mass but it will be it will be a holy time so hope you can come next saturday morning as well the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit go forth the mass has ended saint michael the archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and do thou o prince of the heavenly host by the power of god cast into hell satan in all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls amen in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit you
