is the one who trusts in the lord saint paul asserts that if jesus has not risen from the dead the corinthians faith would be in vain in the gospel of luke jesus speaks to the crowd of disciples giving examples of those who are blessed and those who experience woe so often we can be the source of our own suffering worldly pursuits and desires for wealth status promotion and the like deceive us into placing our hope in people and things rather than the lord this life is fading and only god can offer us true satisfaction in the kingdom of heaven as we participate in the holy sacrifice of the mass let us reflect on how blessed are those who trust in the lord and now let us take a moment to prepare our minds and hearts to receive the lord in word and sacrament [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] so your grace is [Music] my [Music] let your people bless you as your cup is [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all with your spirit brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries lord jesus you came to gather the nations into the peace of god's kingdom lord have mercy lord jesus you come in word and sacrament to strengthen us in holiness christ have mercy lord jesus you will come in glory with salvation for your people lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] we praise you we bless you [Music] we give you thanks for your great glory lord god lord jesus christ [Music] you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] let us pray o god who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever [Music] a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah thus says the lord cursed is the one who trusts in human beings who seeks his strength and flesh whose heart turns away from the lord he is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season but stands in a lava waste a salt and empty earth blessed is the one who trusts in the lord whose hope is the lord he is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream it fears not the heat when it comes it leaves stay green in the year of drought it shows no distress but still bears fruit the word of the lord so [Music] blessed are they in the lord [Music] wicked is meditates on his [Music] is [Music] by the way [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters if christ is preached as raised from the dead how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead if the dead are not raised neither has christ been raised and if christ has not been raised your faith is in vain you are still in your sins then those who have fallen asleep in christ have perished if for this life only we have hoped in christ we are the most pitiable pitiable people of all but now christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep the word of the lord oh [Music] will be raised the lord be with you r a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a stretch of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples and a large number of people from all over judea and jerusalem and the coastal region of tyre and sidon and raising his eyes toward his disciples he said blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of god is yours blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied blessed are you who are now weeping for you alive blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and exult you and denounce your name as evil on account of the son of man rejoice and leap for joy on that day behold your reward will be great in heaven for their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way but woe to you who are rich for you have received your consolation woe to you who are filled now for you will be hungry woe to you who laugh now for you will grieve and weep woe to you who all speak well of you for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way the gospel of the lord a year ago at christmas a friend knowing that i like started liking house plants in the last few years gave me a potted desert rose plant as a gift does anybody have one or seen those before i'd never seen one before they're quite uh quite interesting plants they are a succulent plant that is native to east africa and then arabia and it has so it has a green trunk and at the base of the trunk it has it kind of bulges that's where it stores its water for drought times and has shiny green leaves most of time but every so often little buds appear and when you see a little bud it's not going to be too long before quite dramatically these buds very quickly rapidly grow into these quite striking beautiful red rose-like blossoms therefore it's desert rose in order for this type of plant to flourish outside of its native area it has to be well you have to try to give it some of the same elements that it's used to so keep it fairly warm give it a lot of sun so in a you know a southern window with a lot of sunlight the soil needs to be kind of a sandy type of soil that can drain pretty easily and my first winter with this plant went quite well i got it a year ago and i received it already had a few little buds so i was hopeful that it would soon blossom and it did it was it was it was really exciting and those those blooms fall off after a few weeks and then a few months later more little buds came and another another round of blossoms and a few times it happened throughout the year so i was like yeah this is going well i'm taking good care of this plant it's flourishing it likes its spot so the first year went very well with this plant last month we began the second year of my care of this plant and i started to notice that at the towards the base that a few of the leaves started turning yellow and then brown and then i you know plucked them off out maybe that's just kind of part of the natural cycle loses a few leaves every so often every year maybe so i plucked them off hoping that was that would be it but then a few days later kind of the next layer up started to turn yellow so i was like oh what's going on here so i go on the internet and i type in why do i have yellow leaves in my desert rose plant you know into google and so the first hit came back and it so i clicked on the link and it said first line said well desert rose plants can develop yellow leaves for several reasons and some are as simple and benign as a change of seasons so i stopped reading there i thought well maybe that's that's what it is just change the seasons right it made me feel better so um but then you know a few days later kind of the next level up started to turn yellow and it kept happening and it was like basically getting close to the the last leaves at the top are the only ones left and i was like okay this doesn't seem like change of seasons maybe so i went back to that website read further down and it said so the the following may cause yellowing leaves too much water too little water uh too little light fungal infection um pest infestation so those are different options that i was now dealing with what what's what is this what's causing this so then i uh looked in a book that i was given for christmas this year a book on house plants as it went to the desert roads page and it said this when the light levels are low and is cold do not water much if at all never water them if it is cold where they are placed as they will rot quickly so i looked more closely at you know at my plant i was kind of touching it and felt down to the bulge area and what was supposed to be kind of a nice hard firm bank of uh water for it's stored up for itself i pressed on it and it was spongy and actually kind of broke through when i pressed on it and i realized my worst fears for this plant was that it had a fungal infection and so and there was no way to save it at this point and i'm not so i'm not like a plant doctor i'm not an expert i'm still learning many of you might some of you might correct me afterwards or give me more advice on this but my diagnosis is that you know i did watered i didn't water it too much in my opinion you know i watered it just once a month or so i waited for the soil to get dry before i watered it but i did water it late december when it was really cold and it sits right by a window the furthest away from my wall heater uh it is the coldest part of my rectory and all i can guess is that i i watered it when it was really cold and and because it was so cold the water couldn't evaporate it couldn't drain very well and and it just sat on the plant and as the book said caused it to rot quickly so maybe you might be wondering why am i why am i using this homely time to give you update on my houseplant situation and others you might be saying keep going this is more interesting than your typical homilies right either way the point i'd like to make is you know it's contained in a verse that was shared by the first reading today and the psalm blessed are they who hope in the lord they're like a plant like a tree planted near running water as scripture often reminds us there are so many spiritual lessons we can learn that are offered to us through our observation of nature as saint paul wrote to the romans ever since the creation of the world his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made in other words god created the world and his creation not only shows his glory it also contains and reveals to us truths about who god is who we are and how we are to best relate to him and so looking at nature even taking care of house plants teaches us many lessons about how we either are or are not relating well to god in this case you could say i wasn't you know i wasn't attentive enough to my desert rose the temperature was getting too cold and i watered it at the wrong time and the water became stagnant in the pot and it it caused it to rot and and trying to take care of this pla house plant i can not only learn some the things about how to better take care of the plant i can also learn some things about myself right and being attentive to the plants condition i can also maybe reflect on my own condition right how am i doing right now am i like a desert rose planted in in well-draining soil that's being kept warm and and receiving enough light am i flourishing and producing vibrant blossoms or am i more like a desert rose sitting in stagnant water getting soft losing my leaves starting to rot in my core now desert rose planted in a pot sitting on a windowsill it really it's really helpless it can't do much about its circumstances but it's not so with us we're not helpless we can do something about our circumstances friday was the memorial of our lady of lourdes and if you were at that mass or heard the homily you heard some of these things i'm going to say about about that feast day it was on february 11 1858 that mary first appeared to st bernadette in a grotto in southern france it was really you know a cave on the outskirts outside of town really a place that locals often dumped out their garbage and bernadette was there with her sister and a friend and they were looking for firewood to bring back home to keep themselves warm and after that first appearance over the next five months she appeared to bernadette in that same place 18 times and over the course of her appearances there were well there were there were three specific things that mary asked bernadette to do one see that priest build a chapel there took some convincing but it happened chapel was built eventually a major basilica and now millions of pilgrims go there every year she said number two pray for sinners number three she said look for a stream and washing it perhaps this was the strangest of the of the three things and bernadette wasn't quite sure what to do with that instruction so she you're she's standing in a cave and looking up at mary and okay look first so she looked around and there's there is a stream nearby so she went over started going over there and she realized mary's like nope not there look again and so she this at this point there's she started gathering a crowd whenever bernadette went there people started to go to see what would happen and so at this point hundreds of people are watching her and so she's mary's kind of indicating no look for a stream right here and washing it and so as bernadette wrote her own words you know i went to the stream over there but it was the only stream i could see but then she may realize that it was not that stream that but she was indicating a little trickle of water close by and when i got to it i could only find a few drops mostly mud so i cut my hands to catch some liquid but i couldn't and so then i started to scrape the ground and i managed to find a few drops but it was only after four times of scraping to the ground the fourth attempt was their sufficient amount of any kind to drink and as i said with hundreds of people looking on as she was doing this strange thing bernadette unearthed the miracle of lourdes that a stream of fresh pure life-giving water was flowing was unseen by human eyes but her obedience her faithfulness her hope her love for our blessed mother and for god led her to dig a little bit through the mud and the muck to unearth this treasure for the world and as i said ever since you know millions of pilgrims have visited this holy place thousands have been miraculously healed by these waters that are flowing still flowing today and many more thousands have been healed in ways that only god knows mary used this flow of water to teach bernadette to teach all of us that the life-giving waters of jesus christ they're always flowing sometimes though we need to look in a place we weren't expecting sometimes we need to humble ourselves and follow instructions be obedient be open to learning sometimes we need to be willing to try something new or even try something that we think is impossible to work and all the time we need to be checking if we are or are not connected rooted in the lord's life-giving running water and if we're not then maybe assess well what am i connected to if we're not connected to the lord well here are some other things we could be connected to that we heard in the first reading a barren desert a lava waste perhaps a salty and empty earth and as that first reading said if our hearts are turned away from the lord if we're not connected to his running waters then we're cursed we're cursed if we're putting our hopes in human beings and the material things of this world that give us only temporary comfort then we're cursed because we're going to experience problems when we face the heat or the droughts the storms the floods that do come in every person's life that's why this since last summer we've been talking about the absolute necessity of having retreat experience every day there's just no other way right absolute necessity to check if we're rooted near the lord and being fed by his life-giving running water or if we've drifted over to a desert or slid over into a swamp if i'd been more attentive to my desert rose on a daily basis maybe i could have saved it it's too late for my desert rose but it's never too late for us thanks be to god never too late for us with the lord it's never too late for us he's always ready to send forth his life-giving running water even in a place that we wouldn't expect to find it the daily retreat experience is important essential but so is an actual retreat so you may have read in the bulletin letter this week i'll be making my own annual retreat this coming week an annual retreat it is required by canon law for priests and religious for good reason but it retreats not only for priest and religious though it sometimes seems that way during one of the times you know i've mentioned before that i've in my formation for priesthood i left seminary twice and one of the times that i had withdrawn from seminary i was still well i had formed the habit of making annual retreats so i still thought it was good to do so i still made annual retreats even when i was at a seminary and one time i was talking to a friend about yeah i need to discern i knew what am i going to do with my life i think i'm going to go on a retreat and she was sort of like well uh you know you go on more retreats than anybody i know you know and i was just like oh yeah really and she's like i think partly her point was you know make a decision move on with your life but also her point was you go on too many retreats another time when i was in seminary when i was in seminary i was talking to another friend about uh about that i was going on a retreat i think i felt a little bit guilty that i had the sort of the luxury of being going on retreats as a seminarian and well she said to me well it's kind of your job to go on retreats i think as a way to console me or encourage me to give me permission so to speak that it was okay as a seminarian to make time for retreats but either way it's a problem for us if we think a retreat is optional or excessive or unnecessary or luxurious or a waste of time or if you think it retreat is something that's the job of someone else like a priest or religious but not for everyone else now i'm not saying it's easy to make time for retreat i know it's not and there might be circumstances in someone's life that makes it very difficult if not seemingly impossible so that's where the daily retreat experience you know becomes even more of a necessity but it's worth considering you know how hard have you tried to make a retreat happen for you to schedule it whether it's you know maybe starting with just a half day retreat or full day retreat or even a multi-day retreat or how hard have you tried to help make a way for your spouse to have time to get away and go on a retreat we have options and places for retreats nearby the archdiocese retreat center in federal way as well as you know up on shaw island in the in the san juan islands there's two communities of religious sisters who host retreats my seminary down in oregon mount angel beautiful place to go on retreat many other places nearby please let me know or ask friends if you have looking for ideas or places to go for a retreat but in the meantime as you're considering the possibility of making a retreat i highly encourage you to put our lenten parish mission on your calendar three nights it's not each night's different so please come to all three nights and it's just before the start of lent so what better way you know it's saturday or something excuse me sunday monday tuesday february 27th 28th march 1st at 7 p.m no better way to spend mardi gras than right here right church it's not the same as thing as a retreat but it has many of the same benefits mainly the same retreat like qualities it's a valuable opportunity for those you know those three letters we talked about last summer what were those three letters so let's say all together just make sure we're on the same page the first letter is okay all together the first letter is t p and g which stands for time place and god right retreats offers us that daily retreat experience offers us that lenten mission offers us that opportunity uh you know set aside time putting on your calendar now to come to this place this holy place to reconnect with god right to assess that essential question am i planted right now near god's running water and if i'm not then as mary said to bernadette now is the time to look for the stream now we send forth with our blessings our catechumens and candidates you've shared with us the word of god and we send you forth with our blessing to meditate upon it more deeply and we look forward to the day that you will share with us fully at the lord's table [Music] my i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen trusting in god who sent his own son for our salvation let us offer our prayers for the church especially bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] oh therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your
