[Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] strength in you to fight in your [Music] so teach us gracious lord tonight [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take our battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet joe even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rinse your heart not your garment and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful as he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting and punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offering in labtations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the nation in the house let the bridegroom quit her room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the people the ministers of the lord weep and say sparrow lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them with why should they say among the people where is their god then the lord was stirred to convince his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord one two three [Music] merciful lord for we have sinned be merciful oh lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my authors thoroughly wash me from my guild and of my sin cleanses [Music] for i acknowledge my offers and my sin before me always against you only have i said and done what is evil in your sight be merciful [Music] a clean heart create for me o god and a steadfast spirit renew within me [Music] cast me not out from your presence and your holy spirit take not from me [Music] be merciful [Music] absent [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ may we live your story in our words and minds and hearts king of endless glory praise the lord jesus christ may we live your story in our words and minds and hearts king of endless glory the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogue and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your alms giving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you first do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord praise you my brothers and sisters today we start the 40 days of land and we start that by celebrating the ash wednesday the ashes that we use and that we are going to use during these mars are from the palm trees that were blessed last year during the palm sunday and there will be sign for repentance sign of humility and sign for mortality when the ashes will be distributed when they will be put on our foreheads by the priests and by those who will be giving us the ashes they will say repent and believe in the gospel those ashes show that we are sinners who need repentance so as we put them on and walk the whole day of today people will see us and say oh this is a sinner this person is a sinner and yes that is what we are because we need to repent from our sins we ask god to journey with us for these 40 years 40 days i wish it was 40 years 40 days of land in our gospel the three pillars of the lantern period are prayer fasting and alms giving we have heard many times the church asking us to pray and prayer is that personal and private and intimate conversation with god that we need to do behind closed doors that we need to do in our homes that we need to do every day center augustine says the reason why we don't see the result of our prayers is because we give up very easily we pray for few like few minutes then we forgive we are like we give up praying so that makes god to wait for us to continue to pray but we are not there jesus said let us keep knocking let us keep knocking the door of god in prayer and with an intention and what we pray for with faith will happen to us but when we give our prayers then we don't get what we need in prayers fasting most of the times we think of fasting as not eating a lot of food not eating the kind of food we need you are right but not only that we have many things to fast we can first from hurting others from words that will make others to look at us as being mean to them we can fast from being sad and be filled with gratitude these 40 days of land we shall fast from anger of just being angry with anyone because he has said that she has said that i feel angry with him or with her let us fast from anger and be filled with hope we shall fast from worries and trust in god because if we trust in god we know that whatever we need he will provide for us we can also try we should we can also fast from complaints if we are used to complaining every day and complain about anything let us just say this land i just don't want to complain about anything and ask god to help us just to keep our mouth shut during disneyland you see things that you can complain about you just say god help me let me not talk about this that is fasting parents who have been like letting their children do the right thing every time this time you just say god please take over you take over talking to this kid you gave him you gave her to me as a gift i have talked enough this land i'm not going to talk please god be the one to talk to him be the one to talk to her talk to them in their hearts so that they do the right thing whenever you see them do things that you are going to talk about just let them be let god do his work we can also fast from bitterness like people who yell at their tv when the news is going on what is that which kind of life is this what is going on in this country talking along to the tv that bitterness we just say god take care of this country you created it whatever you hear in the news you just pray let god intervene let us fast from bitterness we can also fast from selfishness and be there and be compassionate with others we can also fast with our words just be silent not talk but listen sometimes god wants to talk to us but because we are talking every time he keeps on waiting for us when we shall keep quiet and listen to him so this time of land we shall make it a point god this is the time for you to talk to me let me keep quiet and listen to you the third pillar of our lenten period is alms giving the bible the gospel said we should not give to our brothers and sisters who are in need and when we give with our right hand let our left hand not know if we have given with our left hand let our right hand not know so as we give during this time of length we should not give and we take a selfie of ourselves giving so that we put it on social media and the world to know we have given that is what jesus is telling us in the gospel not to do let us give only that person to know and our heavenly father he should know that we have given to this person and we shall have for ourselves treasures in heaven but when we give and we want to show to the world what will the world give us will the world give us the treasure we need in heaven no prayer fasting and alms giving are the pillars of our lantern period the pope has asked us to pray for our brothers and sisters who are suffering in ukraine during this time of land we should also pray for the people and for the leaders of russia let them know that we are all children of god let them have change of heart innocent people are dying children are dying without knowing why they are dying just because of the political leaders of russia who have invaded their country let us pray for our families for our neighbors and for everything that happens around the world when we pray with an intention god gives us what we are asking of him though god knows what we need he knows our prayers even before we pray them but he wants to hear it from you from me he wants it to come from us let this period of of land be a period that we see some changes in our heart in our lives in our families and in our neighborhood and in the world praise be lord jesus christ now and forever amen now dear brothers and sisters us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these hashes which we will put on on our heads in penitence oh god who desire not the death of sinners but they are conversion mercifully hear our prayers and in your kindness be pleased to bless these ashes which we intend to receive upon our heads that we who acknowledge we are but ashish and shall return to dust may throw a steadfast observance of land gain pardon for sins and newness of life after the likeness of your risen son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen bring it [Music] we rise [Music] we rise again from ashes to create ourselves [Music] of ashes [Music] we all feel our failures [Music] an offering of ashes an offering to you then rise again from ashes [Music] an offering [Music] made us like himself thanks before the song saved us by his death thanks be to the spirit from an offering of ashes [Music] changed [Music] your word says it can be change our minds this time your life could make us free [Music] change [Music] [Music] god in the way drawn by your promises still we are lured by the shadows and the chains we need [Music] this time your life would make us free we are the people your goals set apart [Music] now as we watch you stretch out your hands offering of abundances your milk and honey seem distant unreal when we are bread and water in our eyes [Music] your life could make us free we are the people your god set apart [Music] please stand let us bring our needs to the lord who is gracious and merciful for the church as we enter this great fast for detachment from things that distract us from what matters most and for grace to return to god with all our hearts we pray to the lord lord hear our prayers for a world afflicted by violence and sin that leaders of nations might come together to seek the ways of peace we pray to the lord lord hear our prayers for those who feel estranged from god may our merciful lord embrace them and give them comfort and hope in his promises we pray to the lord lord hear our prayers for those who do not see the consequences of sin that indifference will give way to compassion and harmful acts into works of justice we pray to the lord lord hear our praise for those unable to worship with us may they find the time to seek the father of mercy each day we pray to the lord lord hear our prayers for the sick and those who live with chronic illnesses and for those who daily face addiction or live with depression may they surrender to the grace of god's healing love we pray to the lord lord hear our praise for our beloved dead and all those who have died may they know the forgiveness of god and come to share in the fullness of christ's glory and for the repose of the soul of jose suniga leon for whom this mass is being offered we pray to the lord for the intercession of our heavenly mother and for the people of ukraine we say haily mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed are thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy whom jesus holy mary mother of god pray for our sinners of our death amen merciful father we ask that you hear our prayers in the name of your son jesus christ our lord amen we will now take up our faithful family offering [Music] i will be i will be i will be strength [Music] i will be i will be i will be strictly [Music] a roadmap for you to travel narrow and steep is the shepherd's way unless you say yes letting me guide you i will be straight for the journey i will be i will be i will be straight for the journey i will be there is a crossman for you to try carries there is a crossman for your lord and i will be strengthening [Music] [Applause] [Music] i will be [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice into our hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devotedly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you have given your children a sacred time for the renewing and purifying of their hearts that freed from disordered affections they may so deal with the things of this passing world has to hold rather to the things that internally endure and so with all the angels and sins we praise you as without and we acclaim [Music] [Music] and earth who's on eye in us blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for these is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] until you come again [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and thomas our bishop eduardo's assistant and all of their clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with the blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is
