and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit let us pray grant a law that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son listen reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the prophet joel now now it is the lord who speaks come back to me with all your heart fasting weeping mourning let your hearts be broken not your garments torn turn to the lord your god again for he is all tenderness and compassion slow to anger rich in graciousness and ready to relent who knows if he will not turn again will not relent will not leave a blessing as he passes oblation and libation for the lord your god sound the trumpet in zion order a fast proclaim a solemn assembly call the people together summon the community assemble the elders gather the children even the infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his bedroom and the bride her alcove between vestibule and altar let the priests the ministers of the lord lament let them say spare your people lord do not make your heritage a thing of shame a byword for the nations why should it be said among the nations where is their god then the lord jealous on behalf of his land took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] for we have sinned [Music] have mercy on us [Music] have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion blot out my offense o wash me more and more from my guilt holy spirit have mercy on us [Music] give me again the joy of your help with the spirit of us sustain me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise [Music] have mercy on us [Music] [Laughter] [Music] a reading from the second letter of sin paul to the corinthians we are ambassadors for christ it is as though god were appealing through us and the appeal that we make in christ's name is be reconciled to god for our sake god made the sinless one into sin so that in him we might become the goodness of god as his fellow workers we beg you once again not to neglect the grace of god that you have received for he says at the favorable time i have listened to you on the day of salvation i came to your help well now is the favorable time this is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god glory praise [Music] king of eternal glory pardon not your hearts today [Music] but listen to the voice of the lord [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you oh lord jesus said to his disciples be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice by doing this you will lose all reward from your father in heaven so when you give arms do not have it trumpeted before you this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win men's admiration i tell you solemnly they affair their reward but when you give arms your left hand must not know what your right is doing your arms giving must be secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you and when you pray do not imitate the hypocrites they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you pray go to your private room and when you shut your door pray to your father who's in that secret place and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you when you fast do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do they pull long faces to let men know they are fasting i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that no one will know you are fasting except your father who sees all that is done in secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ brothers and sisters return to the lord your god for is gracious and merciful the celebration of ash wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day lengthen season that gears us as a body of christ towards a joyful preparation for the resurrection of the lord at easter in the past many of us were used to having ashes imposed visibly on our foreheads in the form of a cross but because of pandemic times the ashes are now sprinkled on our heads even though the ashes are now sprinkled on our heads and cannot be seen visibly but the underlying lengthened message still remains relevant and significant as it speaks of our commitment to repent of our sins and return to this loving and compassionate embrace of our god as spoken by prophet joel in the first reading during this lenten season we take this moment of grace to re-look and work on areas in our hearts and lives that separate us from god because of our sins simply put sin has a crippling effect on us as it prevents us from living our full potential as easter people and therefore we need to constantly repent and make atonement for our sins especially during the season of lent the real challenge for us in this current pandemic is to stay authentic in our witness as disciples of christ that is to constantly put the lord at the center of our lives and not become distracted and preoccupied with non-essentials on the other hand my dear people the pandemic has pulled the rug from under our feet over the past two years and this has a huge impact for us as church here in singapore because about 45 percent of the 330 000 catholics has not returned to worship in the physical church for whatever reason i sense that we are in a similar situation like the people in exile who struggled to practice their faith because they were forced to follow the pagan practices and today for many catholics coming to the physical church can give rise to instances of fear anxieties and health concerns for us and for our loved ones there is no easy solution as to how we can address this very challenging situation but we have to be always mindful that the people in exile were given hope time and time again by the prophets that god has never abandoned his people and that one day they were returned back to their homeland this calls for each one of us as able-bodied catholics to make this conscious choice to return to god and worship him in the physical church the flip side once we stay too long separated from god and his community the body of christ for whatever reason then there is a good chance we can take on a complacent attitude and take our faith for granted perhaps think of this especially for those who have not returned to the church for a long time to use the season of length 2022 as a starting point to make this journey back and reconnect with the lord and his people as the body of christ in the physical church even though we have the traditional length and practices of prayers fasting and arms giving spoken by jesus in the gospel but these practices become pointless in themselves if they are done in a mechanical way to attract the attention of others therefore the display of piety penance or charity must bring about a conversion of hearts and minds especially in our relationship with the lord and our neighbor for the lenten season of 2022 what is our parish of saint mary of the angels doing for this season of lent as parish we are embarking on this lenten journey of conversion titled from cosmic dust to easter garden here pope francis has given new meaning to conversion and baptism into christ 60 years after vatican ii with his environmental and cyclical laudato si or translated as praise be to you and a very powerful phrase used by saint francis of assisi pope francis says we need to experience a conversion or change of hearts we have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth our very bodies are made up of our elements our relationship with the environment can never be isolated from our relationship with others and with god otherwise it would be nothing more than romantic individualism dressed up in ecological garb there will be resource materials provided to help us all together as one family now lenten journey of conversion here in the parish of saint mary of the angels today is a favorable time for us to leave our old ways of sin and return to this loving and compassionate embrace of god as we start our lenten journey may our intimate encounter of the lord in our secret place within our hearts help us to grow in faith hope and love and more importantly to embrace god's will for us the fact is god even loves us in our dustiness amen we will now have the blessing of the ashes dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he will be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will sprinkled on our heads in penitents oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lengthened observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our lord amen [Music] as we begin this solemn time of repentance and conversion let us pray that we grow in the love of god and to pray for each other our response lord send your spirit to us for pope francis our bishops priests and religious that they enter into the lenten season with the spirit willing to change and reconcile with god and neighbor we pray to the lord lord send your spirit to us for world and civil leaders that they work in peace and justice to preserve the dignity of the human person we pray to the lord lord send your spirit to us for the church community that we are more generous with our resources towards the poor needy and marginalized we pray to the lord lord send your spirit to us for medical research workers that the lord grant them wisdom and insight in their research to achieve effective breakthroughs and cures in this current pandemic we pray to the lord lord send your spirit to us we pray that in the spirit of laudato si we will become more aware and conscious of our mother earth of our dignity of our brothers and sisters that we will work together as one human race to bring glory to god's name and to care for the underprivileged and marginalized and become good stewards to care for creation we pray to the lord lord send your spirit to us loving god help us as we observe our lenten practices and grant us a spirit willing to be transformed we ask this through our lord jesus christ amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you through the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life bless be god forever blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you through the wine and work of human hands it will become for us our spiritual drink bless be god forever pray dear brothers dear sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the father almighty may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you oh lord that true works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your only son will listen reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed to see who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down a spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly to his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death oh lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and william our bishop the clergy and your holy people remember also our brothers and sisters have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all have died in a mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles saint francis and class and anthony and all the sins who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coerced eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen jesus taught this wonderful prayer to call god as abba and with this as his beloved children let us pray in the words that jesus taught us our father what in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil preciously grant peace
