[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hello and welcome to gamestack and by overwhelming demand we are finally talking about the sony playstation exactly right show at this point in time 3do and atari have pretty much bit in the dust sega and nintendo are at it again you know as leaders of the console wars sony's just about to throw their hand into this thing so it was a very exciting time in 1995 to be alive so oh yeah um as usual with all console episodes why don't you break it down the console for us in the specs and all that good stuff let's take a look at the system the sony playstation [Music] the playstation was released in japan in december of 1994 and the rest of the world in 1995. it uses amazing cd-rom technology as its main form of media storage originally designed to be a cd add-on for the super nintendo nintendo reneged on the deal and sony decided to go ahead and develop a 32-bit stand-alone console the controller features an odd segmented d-pad as well as shapes used to label the buttons these aren't random the creators intended the triangle to represent a viewpoint or direction the square is a document or a menu and the x and circle buttons for yes and no for decision making eventually this controller would be replaced with a dual shock analog pad this one has not one but two analog pads the games originally came in long boxes but quickly migrated to normal jewel cases the underside of playstation cds are black some rumors say that this was used to help against piracy but no it's there just to be cool the playstation is a 32-bit system running at 33.8 megahertz with 16 million colors and the ability to handle 180 000 texture map and light source polygons per second holy crap many playstations especially the earlier units would have problems dissipating the heat and this could be remedied by turning the console upside down overall the playstation saw nearly 2500 games released and it was the first console to sell over 100 million units [Music] anyway uh we're going to go into games now and we're going to cover some of the popular ones that everyone talks about when they talk about the playstation but we're also going to cover some of the less talked about ones because you know we want to show them to you so you've got the first one yeah let's get right to it yeah and show us what you got dave [Music] ape escape was released in 1999 and it was one of the first games to require the dual shock controller sony made use of every button and every feature of the dual shock and it all worked really well so the story goes that this monkey spectre got a hold of a helmet that increased his intelligence to joe's level and we all know that joe is one smart monkey spector used this helmet for evil purposes and imprisoned the scientists who created it and his assistant your job is to go through various periods of time to capture all the monkeys so that they can rewrite history which would make the monkey superior you start the game having only a baton but you quickly get a net that you use to capture monkeys as the game progresses you get access to many more accessories to help you catch monkeys and traverse each level each level has a required amount of monkeys to catch and when you reach that number the level ends right there besides capturing monkeys there are gold coins to collect and i want to explore so i often just pass up some of the monkeys so that the level won't end other than that this game is very enjoyable graphically it's got problems some of the textures aren't that great and the game is full of jagged lines that are supposed to be straight this type of warping is pretty common on this system but it's still really ugly the music in the game is alright it has some really strange pizza and i'm not sure if i like it or not [Music] after playing the game recently the levels feel cramped but that's to be expected overall though it's a great game and a good one to have in your collection yes we love talking about castlevania so let's take a look at castlevania symphony of the night in this one you control dracula's half human son alya card which everyone remembers from castlevania 3 on the nes right the game starts out with you controlling richter belmont and replaying the final battle with dracula from dracula x on the pc engine super cd now you probably think you've beaten the entire game right then and there just like i did wow what a short game right nope richter may have actually won that battle but he's been missing for several years aldi card comes running in but his main goal is dealing with his daddy issues however you'll eventually encounter maria from dracula x who is there looking for richter what do you hear this is the first of the metroidvania style castlevania games that some people love and other people simply hate personally i love it and this is the best metroidvania by far you run around collecting abilities which help you progress just like you do in metroid you also level up with experience points and the money that falls to the ground can actually be used to buy new stuff in this game i'm interested in this there's a map which is drawn in as you discover new places again just like metroid once you get 100 of the map filled and you think you're done the castle flips upside down and you find out that you're only halfway through now you're running around the same levels but upside down with new enemies and music you need to explore just a little over two hundred percent to fully complete the game the graphics are great with lots of returning enemies and tons of new ones as well i like how these witches turn into cats when you defeat them the music by mishiru yumani is amazing and this soundtrack stands on its own very well it really helps the dreary lonely mood that this game has if you play only one metroidvania style castlevania game make sure it's this one and this particular version [Music] oddworld abe's odyssey was released in 1997 and i was really looking forward to this game i was amazed at the visuals at the time and the cg cutscenes really blew me away as you can see the game plays very similar to games such as prince of persia flashback nosferato and the like your abe who works at the meat processing plant you overhear at a board meeting that the animals the company uses for its product is almost extinct so another meat source must be found sadly they decide to use your species the moodle cons so throughout the game it's your job to save the motocons and help them escape with you instead of being turned into a tasty snack the game cg cutscenes really help fill out the story and really keep your attention i like this style of game from time to time where it's more trial and error finding out what you need to do to advance the game of course you have as many lives as you need so go ahead and kill yourself over and over until you find the exit abe carries no weapons and he has to use his chant ability to help him dispose of some enemies it's very satisfying as when you chant you take control over some of the creatures in here once you use the enemy to kill other guards and whatnot you just make them commit suicide it feels great the game also has a really good sense of humor like this part where you chant and the moths form words like this one watch out for that bat what bet ah definitely a must-have for the system this game does have a sequel abe's exodus and is just as fun if not more fun than the first game there's also an xbox sequel that was it was okay point blank by namco is a really fun light gun game the game uses a namco gun con which attaches to the composite video cable for improved accuracy so if you want to play this game in s video or better you can only play it on the original model playstation you see unless you mod your system the original model playstation is the only unit that'll let you use two different video cables at the same time or i guess you could just get one of these combo cables anyway here it is in 4s video glory basically it's full of really short mini games with different objectives you lose a life if you fail an objective or if you accidentally shoot a bomb the games can range from protecting one of the characters from piranhas to shooting bees to shooting a bunch of skeletons or a whole bunch of different stuff there's a lot of different mini games here and everything kind of has a warioware vibe to it long before warrior ware ever came out that's certainly not a bad thing there's even a strange quest mode where it plays kind of like an rpg with towns to visit and battles to fight the stages that you'd normally play in the arcade mode are actually the battles in this mode but you earn money and level up and all of that stuff unfortunately there's a lot of loading in this mode this is a great game to play with friends as well alundra was released in 1997 and i'm having a hard time deciding if this is an action-adventure game or an action role-playing game you don't level up your character like a normal rpg but you do collect and upgrade your equipment but who cares really as this is one of the playstation's finest games the game is played using a top-down perspective it plays very much like any action rpg or adventure game of that time as is the usual you talk to villagers and then go clear a dungeon and then come back and talk to more villagers and then go to another dungeon in between dungeons you help people of the village by entering their dreams and reading them of their nightmares the game was developed by matrix and not many people know them by that name matrix was made up by several employees of climax you know the guys who made landstalker on the genesis so you know that this game is quality luckily working designs carried enough to bring the game to the us if you know anything about working designs it's that they do a really good job on their packaging firstly the game comes with a foil cover which which is okay i guess but i'm talking about the instruction manual i mean look at this it's made of the highest quality paper it's loaded with artwork and really vibrant colors the text in the game also got a wonderful translation with the usual working design sense of humor like old boner here am i pronouncing that correctly should it be boner or is it bone air ball now i mean if it is boner i mean look at this dialogue the thing i like about this game the most is the dungeons all of them are really puzzle heavy and you'll be solving multiple puzzles in every dungeon the puzzles are all very clever and some of them are downright sadistic and will turn your mind into mush trying to figure them out this game is definitely pleasing to my eyes and my ears it has some nicely drawn graphics and the music is really good with some great melodies if you own a playstation you really need to own this game [Music] ghost in the shell is a game that i never hear anyone talk about i guess it's based on either the movie or the tv show i have no idea one of the two i saw the movie once as a teenager and i really don't remember it very well there are a few cut scenes with the anime in them and they look pretty good anyway you roam around fairly big levels in this ladybug type contraption which can crawl on walls and shoot things you have objectives to accomplish and then you fight a boss this is a really good game and yeah i'm still surprised that i haven't heard anyone ever talk about this one the one problem with this game is that you only have one life and if you die on a boss fight you have to redo the entire mission again in fact i got tired of trying to beat the level 2 boss and just turned it off and played some other games but i kept thinking about it i wanted to play again i simply had to try again and i did and i beat that bastard he was actually pretty easy you really do need to memorize the level layouts perfectly in order to beat things especially the levels that have a timer like this one where there are bombs all over the place that you need to destroy and you need to do it as fast as you can the pace of the game is really frenetic and the great driving music really only adds to that you know why this game is so good because it was developed by exact makers of jumping flash and some of the more awesome x 68 000 games do yourself a big favor and check this game out it makes you keep coming back for more and that's always the sign of a good game warhawk was a launch game for the playstation back in 1995. i remember being in total law of everything this game offered it had live action cut scenes a great cd soundtrack and a large 3d world to fly around in now granted the live-action cutscenes were always super cheesy and then of course the actors went to the gamesack school of acting intelligence can't find anything on this creole guy but still they were fun to watch and added to the overall enjoyment in the game itself you take control of the warhawk plane which is one of the last hopes of destroying creel who is an insane megalomaniac the warhawk controls really well it takes a bit to get used to the controls but once you do you'll be flying like a pro back in 1995 i had a lot of fun with this game and i think it was because it was a new game on a new system and i was really excited about this i mean really a new competitor had just entered the nintendo vs sega battle and this game was making a huge impact i knew right then and there that the playstation was going to be a great system playing this game for this review i really didn't feel much of the excitement that i used to have the game is still fun and i enjoy the cutscenes and the music but it just doesn't fascinate me like it used to if you don't own it then i would say it's worth a try because it's a solid game you can easily get this game for under five dollars and it's worth it for that but i wouldn't pay too much more [Music] there's a lot of fighting games on the playstation but tobal toble tabal number one is one that rarely gets mentioned this one is made by square and dream factory it's a 3d fighter without any texture mapping at all say what you will but i kind of like how it looks it's very clean high resolution and fast it doesn't have any of that blocky warped or grainy stigma that a lot of playstation games do the lack of textures also speeds up the loading the music is generally really good as well as for the game itself it's not bad at all you can choose from 8 different characters you have a high medium and low attack as well as a jump and a guard this game isn't super complex but it is fun and some of the characters are pretty goofy if you get tired of the tournament mode you can try out quest mode here you'll run around caverns collecting blue gems while having multiple battles and searching for items or accomplishing various other tasks the control here really sucks but it definitely adds some longevity to the game [Music] tobal 2 not tobal number 2 just 2 was released only in japan this one adds some new fighters as well as a bit of texture mapping to the floor and some parts of the background still there's none of that typical warping and everything is still high-res and at 60 frames per second and they updated the quest mode with towns to roam and npcs to talk to i didn't play this for very long since it's in japanese but i hear there's an english translation floating around out there the quest controls still suck though so are these the best 3d fighters ever no but they are fun and they are often overlooked [Music] strider 2 was released on the playstation in 2000 this is a port of the arcade game from 1999. this is the true sequel to the original strider and not that abomination from us gold called strider returns this is a solid sequel but could have been so much better if it didn't have some flaws i'm not talking about control because the control is perfectly fine strider controls very much like the original and even has a few new moves as you can see capcom made a hybrid style game here they have 2d hand-drawn sprites with strider and a lot of enemies then they chose to have 3d backgrounds and a lot of 3d machine type enemies everything interacts really well with each other but the models don't seem to fit perfectly it's a small but noticeable nitpick also the graphics seem to have a very jagged feel to them everything just seems really rough around the edges personally i would have been happy with the completely new 2d game but i'll take this one as it's certainly better than nothing my second nitpick is that the game loads a lot it seems like just when you're getting into some great action the game loads and you feel like saying damn things were just getting good the game is short with only five stages and unlimited continues when you do continue you start right where you died which makes the game super easy and you know what i'm fine with this i think we need more games that can be beaten quickly just so we can have something to play when we're short on time the music in this game is great it has a lot of really nice tracks in here that go well with the action all in all this is a good game and a great addition to your library the game comes on two discs the first disc is strider 2 and the second disc is a port of the original arcade the company that stamped the discs they screwed up and put the arcade version on strider 2 disc and the strider 2 on their arcade disc dumbasses let's talk about the ridge racer series the first game here was a launch title for the system it lets you play a bonus state from galaxian as it loads and that's pretty cool the entire game loads into the system ram except for the music so after the initial load it never has to load again to be honest i've never really been very good at this game i just can't get the hang of the drifting mechanics the graphics are decent for the time and the music is pretty much awful in my opinion you have an overly enthusiastic announcer which adds to the fun overall not a horrible game but i like daytona a lot more [Music] ridge racer revolution is pretty much more of the same the tracks are slightly different and it's bright and pretty but other than that is pretty much the same game oh and they added a rear view mirror for your convenience you get to play galaga 88 as the game loads this time so that part's better it's a decent game and better than the first but certainly not something i'd advise paying full price for if you already own the first one rage racer was the first game in the series that i truly had a great time with this one seemed to have a bit more variety and even let you design your own graphic logo on the cards unfortunately the graphics are pretty dark and grainy and the music is your standard ridge racer stuff you get a female announcer this time though [Applause] and the best one of the bunch is ridge racer type 4. this one has actual different tracks instead of just simple extensions and it also features silky smooth analog control you're on a racing team this time around and they love to yell at you even when you finish in first place they yell at you oh well the music is actually really good this time around and not the typical spazzy stuff that was in the previous games [Music] the graphics are definitely a step up from the previous games it even comes with the bonus disc that has a turbo version of the first ridge racer this runs at twice the frame rate and resolution of the original game though there's only one other car on the track besides younow still you know it's a really cool bonus this here is really the only ridge racer game you even need to have on the system [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right well there's 10 games for you so far and as you probably know we've forgotten well over a thousand of them so yes we really you should get going i think yeah i'm done with the episode how about you oh my god well well no no no no more yeah let's cover a few more but let's make the reviews a little bit shorter and uh just a little bit but um i've got the first game this time and well let's look at a hell of a lot more games [Music] herx adventures from lucasarts isn't a playstation exclusive but it's still a really cool game hades is taking over the land and now it's up to you to stop them you run around bashing things with your club or using other weapons and items in order to help you proceed the game has a great sense of humor the graphics are simple but they look good and there's a lot of animated cartoons around however certain enemies just take way too many hits for example these skeletons have submerged in the mud almost never seem to die but other than that this game is super fun highly recommended [Music] parappa the rapper is a rhythm game that was released in 1997 you play as parappa who wraps his way through six stages you don't actually rap but you do need to have a good sense of timing as you must push buttons to the beat of the music track that's playing you know i never thought i'd like a rhythm game like this but parappa proved me wrong and this is actually a very fun and addictive game i've gotta say even the music is very enjoyable and very catchy everything is drawn a little wacky but i do like the paper thing characters a great game for any playstation collection i'm glad to know which way to go but it ain't gonna stop me here we go check and turn the signals to the right deck [Music] let's take a quick look at xevious 3d slash g plus what a great name anyway it has the original xevious games on it and i've really never enjoyed those at all there's also an arranged version which is a little better and slightly more entertaining to play but the main draw with this version is the 3d slash g-plus remake what all that means i have no idea the 3d part obviously means polygons i mean hell you can even turn corners now well i mean the game does it for you there's even new weapons this mode is a lot more fun to play than any other version of xevius granted i don't really care for the inverted view but it's still fairly fun the music is great and the graphics are okay if you're a xevious fan you'll definitely enjoy einhander is a dark and gritty shooter by squaresoft released in 1997. for a company that mainly makes rpgs these guys did a pretty good job with this shooter you can choose from three available ships each with a standard machine gun killing certain enemies lets you take their weapons and use them as a secondary weapon in addition to your machine gun with solid shooting action large boss fights and a soundtrack that will knock your socks off einhander is a great game for those who like shooters the playstation also had the very first metal gear solid game it's so good that i played through it two times back to back when i first got it you start a solid snake on a mission to prevent the terrorists from using their nukes stealth plays a huge part in this game and it's generally best to go about your business unseen there's a lot of conversations via the radio and some of these are very very long still it's one of the best games of the 32-bit generation for sure [Music] here's crash bandicoot and it was released in 1996. crash was sony's official mascot for a while this is the first game in the series and in my opinion is one of the best this was a very fresh and unique game at the time the atmosphere and music are all great and the game is still very playable today if you haven't played the original crash game you really should as it's superb in fact all four titles on the playstation including crash team racing are quality titles unfortunately the series did go downhill after that and really gave crash a bad name [Music] the adventures of lomax is a great little 2d game by psygnosis based on their lemmings franchise you're lomax and you're out to rescue the other lemmings trapped inside bad guys similar to how early sonic games work once you kill them the lemming is free and off he goes it's a fast paced game and you've got to have quick reactions if you want to stay alive it plays kind of like a hectic flink on the genesis and sega cd if you've ever played that the graphics are super vibrant and really show off what the playstation can do in 2d the music's pretty damn good too [Music] motor tune grand prix was released in 1996. the developers of this fun little racing game went on to form polyphony digital as we all know they created the gran turismo series which i personally didn't care for but a lot of people really like that stuff this game plays more like a mario kart game with very cartoonish cars characters and tracks even the weapons that you pick up to use against your enemies bear a resemblance to mario kart with good controls and good music this one really is a must-have dynamite we should definitely mention final fantasy vii while i'm not a tremendously big fan of the game nor most rpgs there's no denying the impact this one had in fact for a great many people it was their very first rpg that they ever played and as a result is still their favorite i remember people new to gaming telling me how awesome it was and how far they were getting long after i had gotten bored with it and yes i did get bored i never bother playing past the part where cloud dresses up as a girl but i gotta say that the music is awesome and basically playstation chiptune is for lack of a better term the pre-rendered backgrounds often transition to and from full motion video scenes and it's totally seamless this really isn't my style of game but like i say i can't deny its impact and it's amazing music [Music] our type delta was released in 1999 it's the fourth game in the r-type series it's also the first r-type game to be rendered with polygons it's a fun game that's worthy of the r-type brandy you can pick from three different ships and i found each of them fun to play the game is actually aged very well and it still looks good to this day and of course is still very playable the music is also really enjoyable so turn the music up and turn the sound effects way down for even more enjoyment [Music] spyro the dragon is one of them we could have probably included in our failed mascots episode well technically i still could since the episode's not even out yet as i record this but i digress you play a spyro and you attack enemies with a charge attack or you can use your fire breath you also collect a lot of jewels you're trying to free all of the older dragons who have been turned into stone by the bad guy simply because he couldn't take an insult ugly that does it spyro controls well for the most part but i really don't like the camera at all for example why am i running at the screen the graphics are pretty good and the music is upbeat so i can see how this game has a lot of fans i haven't played the sequels but i imagine at least some of them are even better he's a part of that whole skylanders thing now so i guess he's not really failed or forgotten clinoa was released in 1998 to below average sales here in the us it's gained a cult following over the years as people realize what a great game this actually is the levels are all 2.5 d and look fairly nice with bright colors grey atmosphere and really good level design clenoa can grab a hold of his enemies and use them to get to higher areas or just to throw them at other enemies he also has a flutter jump reminiscent of yoshi and is very useful throughout the game and to top things off clinoa has a great upbeat soundtrack that i really enjoy a great game if you can get your hands on it gradius gaiden from konami was never released in the us in its time as you'd expect it plays pretty much like every other gradius game but this time you can pick from four different ships each with their own different set of weapons you fly around picking up icons and you can determine the order you power yourself up or you can select semi-auto and let the computer do it for you like typical gradius games you get set back and lose all of your weapons when you die this is where i usually just reset the game and just start from the beginning the graphics are pretty damn good though kinda dark and the music is outstanding [Music] [Applause] i've been listening to this music for over 15 years and it's still amazing it did come out for the psp in the us and the gradius collection [Music] disruptor by insomniac games was released in 1996. this first person shooter is pretty fun for a doom clone it's pretty typical for the genre but it does add a nice little twist in the form of psionics psionics are kind of a special ability like shock drain and healing that adds a little depth to the gameplay the game controls very well and everything is fairly smooth my only real complaint is the lack of being able to look up or down to see more of your environment there's some decent looking fmb cutscenes which help piece the story together the acting isn't great but it's not the worst i've ever seen this is a fun exclusive for the playstation [Music] time crisis is another light gun game by namco you play as richard miller a low polygon badass who's here to shoot up bad guys and rescue the president's daughter it plays kind of like sega's virtua cop except that you're always hiding behind things you press and hold a button on the gun to show yourself and fire let go of the button and you go back into hiding there's tons of low count polygons here and the areas are really short it's not a bad game at all but i do kind of prefer virtua cop blasto was a heavily marketed game back in 1998 it featured the voice talent of the late phil hartman and sadly that was the best part of the game let me see if i can help you there little lady the game is a third person action platformer that controls fairly clunky as you can see the draw distance in this game is horrible every level consists of skinny walkways and small platforms to jump on lots of bland bland graphics and not much variety in the enemies makes this game kind of a dud silent hill is a super creepy game by konami you play as harry and you just had a car crash but you can't find your daughter anywhere she must be here in silent hill so you set off to look for her while battling creepy undead things or maybe they're not undead that's just their natural monstrous form who knows there's so much fog in this game that you might be tempted to mistake it for an n64 game but the graininess will be your clue that you're actually running this on a playstation still i bet the nintendo 64 is super jealous of the amount of fog here the voice acting is really stilted but you know what that really only adds to the creepy vibe i don't know what happened [Music] i'd like to find out myself [Music] uh-huh the controls take a bit of getting used to but once you do they're definitely manageable so start searching for clues to find out where your daughter might be and hopefully make it out of the town alive this is a great game isn't the cheryl's sketchbook hmm she's at the school vandal hearts which came out in 1997. this is a turn-based strategy rpg yes i know all about final fantasy tactics but i actually had more fun playing this game now graphically the game isn't all that great but the game more than makes up for it with the amount of fun that it offers it has a great story some good music and it's not overly diluted with jobs and magic systems konami keeps it simple with an easy interface between battles talking to townspeople and visiting shops this is a great game that every fan of the genre should try and there you go that was a sony playstation for you we've covered about i think maybe 40 games all together yeah something like that quite a few and you know i'm sorry we didn't cover every single one of them but we will in a future episode not necessarily dedicated to the playstation but we'll get around to the other games yeah real quickly what did you think about the sony playstation i i really liked it i was into the saturn a lot more i don't have the time not a surprise yeah but you know there's no denying that the games on there are great i was i was really happy to find games like ghost in the shell which is amazing and you know other great games on there as well that i've had since the playstation launched what did you think um i've always been a fan of the playstation since its launch uh as with you yeah you remember when we got totally clips turbo before before the system even yeah so we just got to stare at the box for a week or whatever yeah it was good tough it wasn't a very good game but you know i like the system overall i of course it was played with problems you know you know you had to turn your system upside down to play games sometimes but you know i've had three playstations in my lifetime so wow i've had one and but it's still going it recorded at least half of the games in this episode so anyway i hope you enjoyed it and thank you for watching gamesec [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to game tag we are talking about the neo geocd this time the neo geocd i've i've been curious about this system i mean it sounds really cool and all but the only thing i ever really hear about is it has some crazy ass loading times i mean can you confirm or deny this for me joe we will confirm or deny that in this very episode and show you lots of games and we've covered the neo geo x in the past which was horrible yeah it's full of emulation and just it's not done very well and but this is official snk hardware the real deal here now speaking of hardware why don't you just dissect this thing for us and show us what it's all about okay let's take a look the geo cd the neo geo aes was known for its arcade perfect games playable at home starting in 1990 but the cartridges cost an average of 250 dollars per game or even more so in 1994 snk created the neo geo cd to offer games on cheaper cd-rom discs each costing around 50 the system itself cost around 250 dollars and made it much easier to add neo geo games to your collection there's three different versions of the hardware the first one had a sliding tray the second one was a top loader and then there's the japan only cdz which is the model we're using in this very episode it's also a top loader and it features a double speed cd drive which cuts the loading times in half all neo geo cd units feature composite stereo and s video jacks on the back of the system as well as rgb a lot of games had arranged music while others had the same music that you'd hear on the cartridge internally the neo geo cd ran on a 12.5 megahertz 68 000 cpu it has 65 536 available colors and everything you see on screen is a sprite even the backgrounds the system also came with a cool micro switch control pad which is great when they're brand new unfortunately they can wear down quickly and must be repaired these days you can get the first two neo geo cd systems for between 100 and 200 while the cdz goes for between 250 to 400 dollars [Music] all right joe well you did it again what you gave us some awesome information on a piece of hardware oh i thank you yeah so you know the system's great actually i kind of like it but one thing i miss on that is a reset button believe it or not you actually don't realize how much you miss a reset button until you go to push it and it's not there well and then you're like what do i do i guess just caution yeah you have to power off and then power back on but you know it costs money to put in a reset button that's just money that they just couldn't yeah put into the design i don't know the astronomic level so yeah i guess i don't know anyway uh we're going to talk about some games they're going to show you the neo geo cd games and stuff like that and yeah ah hell you got the first game so all right why don't you kick it off [Music] ninja commando is a top down vertically scrolling running gun game you can choose from three different warriors to get you through the game and for the most part each of them control the same each one has a normal shot and the faster you can mash the button the stronger the shot becomes it's a pretty cool idea and it works really well but the muscles in your hand and wrist will probably ache after a short time mine did another cool idea is the use of button inputs for different shots for example holding down for two seconds and then pushing a will release a powerful attack that's very helpful each character has other cool moves like this as well you also have a special attack which is strong but it takes off a chunk of your life bar and finally there's an evade button which gets you out of range of enemy attacks but you're still vulnerable you can throw a big star while doing this evade move and it does some nice damage too graphically the game is as you'd expect from a neo geo game with nice sprites and lots of detailed backgrounds one thing that i don't really like are areas that shouldn't be accessible like going from water onto this dock you should have to jump up here but you just walk over it as if it's part of a normal path the music's mostly good with a few exceptional tracks all in all it's a fun [Music] game now i'm not normally the hugest fatal fury fan but i really like real about fatal fury this one is a lot of fun to play and it feels more responsive and fluid compared to the previous games in the series especially parts one and two you can jump around three different planes four grand mid ground and the background the controls have changed from the earlier game so now there's a button dedicated to switching planes and i like that a lot the controls are also very responsive and of course i really like playing as mai i don't know why but she's just fun to play portions of the stages are destructible which is always cool but watch out there are now out of bounds which is really weird for a 2d fighting game my biggest gripe with this game is that you need to beat three different characters before the stage changes it's a nitpick really i'm sure the cartridge version doesn't need to load between the matches so it's probably more seamless to play there but still this game is really cool real bout fatal fury special was the next in the sub series and it arrived two years later this one features only two planes to fight on instead of three just like the first two fatal fury games but i actually prefer it that way there's more characters to choose from here and everything has a very polished feel to it and of course this one is just a blast to play i like it a lot more than the first real bout game the controls are tight and responsive and i never found myself struggling to pull off any of the moves the graphics are great like most other fatal fury games each round looks slightly different than the last since a little bit of time has passed i love that kind of attention to detail the music is great with lots of cd quality tunes in fact when you beat the game you're treated to a very long music video not really something you'd expect to see on the neo geo but it's cool i guess this is actually exclusive to the cd version of the game so screw you everyone who spent thousands of dollars on a cartridge version actually it's nowhere near that expensive overall this is a really fun game it's not one of the more rare titles out there but i find it to be one of the more enjoyable ones and here we have king of monsters 2. i reviewed the first game in our neo gox video and i liked it part 2 is a good sequel because it's more of the same with some new gameplay sadly this time around you can only choose from 3 monsters but at least they're all fun to play instead of just a straight up wrestling match like the first game this time around the levels seem much bigger you'll rampage your way through cities canyons and other locales destroying almost everything in sight doing so makes you feel so huge and unstoppable and you'll collect power-ups and points along the way toward the end of the level you'll fight the boss character there's no pinning him down this time as once his life bar empties he is dead dead dead dead but you'll die a lot before that happens these boss battles are fun and actually seem to last a long time i still really like the grandeur of the levels it's so fun and satisfying to destroy buildings boats planes and helicopters oh man i only wish little people would run for their lives while you're demolishing the cities but i guess you can't have everything the gameplay is fairly smooth with only little hints of slowdown here and there i like this sequel and it's a fun way to kill a couple of hours [Music] [Applause] paul starr is the second shooter inspired by r-type on the system the first being last resort this one features a lot of pre-render sprites and even some cut scenes now i normally don't like this kind of stuff but they look pretty damn good here unlike r-type you can't detach your front-most module and use it to shoot all around you but it can block a lot of the weaker enemy shots the power ups that you pick up obviously affect your weapon but also your charge attack you'll be relying on this attack for most of the game so you're going to want to pick a favorite which works best for you i kind of like this green attack because it's wide even though it's not as powerful as some of the other attacks the game is slow moving and methodical but that really doesn't bother me at all in fact everything has a rather epic feel to it you can definitely see the influence from our type in some of the weapons and even in some of the stages but it borrows from other games too remember this guy from gradius2 yeah he's attacking you in this stage taken from life force but that's okay i think it's pretty cool i really love the graphics in this game great color and scrolling with lots of stuff on screen even if it does cause some slowdown the music is awesome as well and it lets you know that this game means business it's not an easy game but it's definitely a recommended one what kind of a neo geo system overview would be complete without a metal slug game or two even here's the first metal slug and since we've talked about other versions in the past i won't go into a lot of detail i will say that this version plays great with very little slowdown it sounds very good with all the great voices and the music also sounds really good it makes me feel like i'm ready to lay down my life for a good cause well i mean by the life of my game spray not mine you crazy what a great game this is and every time i play i'm always amazed at the graphics the amount of detail in every level and the smooth animation of all the characters sometimes just boggles my mind i think one of my favorite weapons is the flamethrower i can never seem to get enough of an enemy soldier screaming in pain while his body burns you can almost see the agony in his face as it's lit up by fire poor little bastard that that'll teach you for being an enemy anyways this is just a great game all around and you probably don't want to pay for the aes envious or even cd versions as all of them are quite expensive you can however play the game on one of the many snk compilations metal slug compilations or even on virtual consoles metal slug 2 is pretty much what you'd expect from a sequel which is more awesomeness the artwork in all the levels is just as beautiful as the first game if not more so your character can transform in this game in level 2 if you get breathed on by a mummy or get dumped on by a bat you'll turn into a mummy you move slower but you're not dead well maybe you're kind of dead because you're a mummy but you can still fight if you collect a certain vial then you can transform back into a human again also in level 4 if you eat too much food you become super fat and you move very slowly you can change back to skinny if you eat diet powder or just don't eat any more food oh how i wish i had a can of daiya powder in real life the game plays well but there's a lot more slowdown in this one and it pauses to load mid-level and even before bosses it's not a big deal in my book but others will complain is still a super fun game that everyone should experience [Music] over top is one of the few racing games on the neo geo this one is an overhead racer with a slight isometric view you can pick from several different types of cars let me tell you i'm kind of regretting choosing this ferrari because this snowy hill climb really isn't what they're made for i like the graphic style here and the music is alright unfortunately it's just not tremendously fun to play even with the map in the upper left corner it's hard to properly predict your turns and even harder to keep from bumping into the wall also the game loads after each checkpoint and is not that far between each one but hey why play over top when you can play neo drift out yeah neo drift out has got to be one of my favorite top down racing games this one is a rally racing game and it kicks ass choose from three different rally cars and off you go the game zooms in as you slow down and out as you go faster i really like this and it definitely adds to the excitement i love drifting around the corners and even though i'm not really an expert at it i still have a ton of fun doing this like overtop there are also multiple routes you can take in each stage this game was never officially made available for the aes cartridge system and i have no idea why not maybe everyone only wanted fighting games who knows i kind of suck at the game but i still have a blast playing this samurai spirits or samurai showdown as is called in the west is one of the seemingly endless amount of fighting games on the neo geo it takes place in feudal japan and is known for its weapon-based fighting each character is equipped with a sword or some other instrument of pain and death to be honest i'm pretty bad at these games but i do kind of enjoy playing them no i don't enjoy getting my ass kicked over and over again but i really like the backgrounds of music all are set in an age long past and are really nice to behold the music is great as it has that ancient japanese feel to it and some of the tracks even have modern guitar riffs here and there as for the fighting action itself it moves a bit slow and i only say that as i'm actually kind of used to the street fighter series most of the fighting is done with blades but a lot of the characters have projectile texts that always seem to get blocked it's an okay game and a fun change from street fighter [Music] samurai spirits 2 was a good follow-up to the first game it does what a great sequel should do the game comes with new fighters new moves and it even moves faster than the first one i had a lot more fun playing this game than the first as it just felt that my button commands were actually being executed as expected the graphics are great and the backgrounds are all just as beautiful the music is still good but not as ancient feeling as the first game this is a good entry to the series and is at least moving in the right [Music] direction samurai spears 3 came along and it seems like they changed the whole scheme of the game everything has a much darker feel to it a lot of the characters if not all of them have been redrawn and seem to be more evil looking a new thing that was added this time around was being able to select between two types of the same character you have the slash character which is the regular fighter that we've known in past games and a bus character which is more of a deviant type character also in this game you have a weak medium and strong slash and one kick button whereas in previous games you had two of each again the game boasts some great backgrounds to fight in front of and the music has a different feeling to it but still has some really strong tunes even with all the changes they've made this is still a really fun game [Music] samurai spirits 4 came out and again it feels like a much different game this time they went back to a palette with much brighter colors although the game still plays like part three it has really fluid controls and animations and is just a fun game to play really nice looking backdrops and again some fantastic music make this game a coveted part of a neo geo cd collection the only real problem i have with all the games in this series is when you're playing a two-player game the winning fighter cannot change their character they're stuck with the same fighter until they lose i feel a good fighting game should let you choose a different fighter after each match if you want that being said i really haven't spent as much time as i would like to with this series i know it's a lot deeper than what i've experienced and eventually i'd like to play a lot more just take my word for it that these four games are worth your time if you have any interest at all about samurai showdown [Music] savage rain is a pretty cool fighting game we're playing this on a japanese system hence the title screen anyway you've got 10 characters to pick from none of them tremendously interesting but they'll do in this game you can jump back and forth between two planes kind of like fatal fury only i think that this game pulls it off pretty well obviously you can land lows when jumping to a dimension as the game calls it where your opponent is but you can also attack across the dimensions with projectile attacks it's really satisfying when they try to attack you from afar and you just deflect it back at them and kick their ass the moves are fairly easy to pull off and as with most neo geo fighting games they give you hints on the special moves you can do during the continue screen i also recommend that you switch the controls to type 2 so that switching dimensions is dedicated to its own button and therefore a lot easier to do i think that the graphics look really good for the most part and the scaling is implemented really well the music is pretty cool as well but it's not really anything i'd want to listen to outside of the game some people in the neo geo community don't really care much for this game all i know is that i enjoy it and yeah that's what matters to me okay we're about halfway done i think um with the games it's pretty quick okay well do you just want to get back into covering more well yeah i mean how many more fighting games are because there's been a lot so far i really don't know okay well there's a lot more you know there's a lot of fighting games on this system there are everyone knows that though yeah i mean i i guess but it would be nice to have some part twos on some other other organization they were making that but i guess they stopped to make a fighting game probably i'm sure probably uh what do they make world heroes yeah yeah and um anyway let's get on to more games okay [Music] far east of eden kabuki clash is a cool fighting game by hudson soft that's right hudson soft and it's based on their 10 guy macu series this game kicks ass you pick from an assortment of zany ass tengai make you characters as you fight items will be dropped that can either help you or hurt you or your enemy so if a purple bottle happens to drop try to make sure your enemy picks it up so they get stunned and you can pummel their ass the fighting engine itself is pretty good i found most of the moves fairly easy to pull off and everything is extremely responsive just like how it should be the game has a really hyper pace and that really adds to everything else here the graphics are awesome even though they don't zoom in and out like a lot of other neogeo fighting games do the backgrounds really bring the game alive with tons of vivid color and well-drawn artwork and the music kicks all sorts of ass with a cross between ancient japanese flavor themes and hard rock it's a great fit and it really brings up the energy level and yes i rip the music so i can listen to it on my ipod some people may call this game samurai showdown light but whatever i had a lot of fun with it and it's definitely one of the better ones in my opinion check it out [Music] puzzle bobble is a great puzzle game and i'm wondering why we didn't cover it in our super popular puzzle game episode it was super popular next to tetris and dr mario this is easily my third favorite puzzle game it's highly addictive so much so that it's one of the very few games i can actually get my wife to play anyways as you can see the object of the game is to match colored bubbles matching three or more will make the bubbles pop the object of the game is to clear the board of all bubbles it's very simple but like i said it's very addictive once you get into the game you can do more damage to your opponent by dropping more bubbles stack them up on each other and if you can release one of the higher bubbles everything underneath comes crashing down graphics aren't amazing but do they really need to be the music is very catchy but sadly there's only one tune while playing the game this game is more widely known in the us as busted move and it came out on almost every other platform available so be sure to check it out [Music] crossed swords 2 is an exclusive game for the neo geo cd that's right this was never released for the aes home system nor the nvs arcade system is saying system after mvs or aes redundant no well this game is basically like arcade punch out meets dynamite duke in a medieval setting with a purpose now i haven't played the first cross swords but i imagine that this one has twice the action and twice the excitement it is crosswords too after all to be honest i really wasn't expecting a lot from this game but i was pleasantly surprised i really like it you pick from three different characters and they're all pretty good but i think i prefer playing the ninja the most your wireframe character can attack jump block and even dash to the side basically you battle the enemies which jump towards you and land on the plane where you spend all of your time you can use magic to attack if you have any and some magic even affects enemies that are waiting in the background halfway through each act as shop appears and you can upgrade your weapons raise your level or refill your life and magic well if you have enough cash that is the graphics here are awesome and i really like the settings with robots and even aliens attacking you back in the olden days it's just crazy i know it kind of looks confusing to watch me play this but when you're the one actually playing it it really isn't confusing at all oh and i love the music here it's really moody and definitely draws me into the game i'm really glad i got to play this that's a great exclusive for the system top hunter is a unique side-scrolling action game you can pick from four worlds right away which is nice the final level is available only after the first four are complete the game is played on two planes and you can switch between them as often as you like for the most part you'll be doing lots of switching as there are triggers that you need to push or rings to pull on both planes fighting is easy and you have a nice elastic arm for long attacks you can also do special controller inputs for more moves like a fireball or this ground smash thing all the levels are really good looking with nice detail sadly some parts of the game suffer from a bit of slowdown it's not horrible but you'll notice it when you're playing and there also seems to be a fair amount of floating you can't pick which character you want to play as player one is always rotty and two is kathy the music isn't anything great and in fact i can't recall any of the music after i beat the game i had a decent time with this game but nothing about it really stood out as being super cool [Music] fighters history dynamite is the second game in that series by data east you can tell by playing it that this is kind of an earliest game on the system there's still some fun to be had though you get to choose from 13 different characters for the most part it's a pretty generic fighting game but it did manage to keep my interest with its fun characters and occasional cartoon sound effect why that sound effect is in there i have no idea the stage changes from day to night between rounds kind of like they do in fatal fury games the graphics are otherwise fairly good but nothing amazing the same can pretty much be said about the music in the us this game is called karnov's revenge yeah remember karnov the russian guy who blows fire well he's back and now he's chinese he still blows fire though overall it's an average game that's worth it if you can find it for cheap [Music] viewpoint is an isometric shooter as you may or may not know i'm not a big fan of isometric games there's only maybe one or two games that have an isometric view that i actually enjoy and this isn't one of them it's kind of sad too because this game is actually very pretty i'm a big fan of the graphics here and everything looks really nice but i have a hard time with this shooter being isometric as i really lose track of where i am compared to the background i guess instead of looking at my ship i should always look at its shadow i mean what's the fun of that anyways your ship controls well and has a single shot until you pick up this options icon for a three-way shot the power shot that you get when holding down the fire button is really powerful and can destroy a lot of medium-sized enemies in one hit you can have super bombs to help you with bosses or sticky situations i like this rolling flame wave if you release it at the right time when your enemy is backtracking it will do some massive damage it took care of this first boss very quickly again i don't think this is a bad game in any way it's just that the viewpoint is what really ruins it for me [Music] ironclad is another game that's exclusive to the neo geocd and it's only in japan there was an aes cartridge made but it was never officially released anyway this is sort of a horizontal shooter i say sort of because there's a slight angle to the view so you're kind of looking down on your ship and everything you see and yes this one is kind of inspired by r-type as well but that's okay you can merge with your unit to form a new weapon that's powered up independently of your standalone weapon you don't have a stock of ships but instead a power meter which can be refilled if you collect certain icons you select your stages in a manner that's very similar to the darius games darius darius yeah you also get to choose from three different ships this isn't a bad game but it's really nothing stellar either the graphics kind of have a dark blandish look to them and there's really nothing here that screams neo geo the music is fairly nice though and it definitely adds to the game for sure [Music] this one also saw a release on the wii virtual console [Music] here's twinkle star sprites this game is a shooter puzzle game and maybe it was a new genre that adk was trying to create i've never played any other game like this before when you first start playing this game you wonder what in the hell is going on as you're playing a shooter and hurting your opponent at the same time but here's actually what's going on in this game every time you shoot an enemy it explodes and destroys surrounding enemies creating a chain this in turn will send orbs to your opponent's screen to hurt them your opponent can send this back to you by shooting at it this will also trigger a special attack which sends characters across the screen if the objects you send to the other side of the screen hits them part of their life bar is depleted once a player's life bar is gone you get a screen sizing up the winner and the loser it's all kind of confusing but damn is it a fun game besides the normal shot you have a charge shot which is very helpful and some screen clearing bombs which can get you out of tight situations this is easily the most colorful game i've seen on this system and it also has some really good music this is definitely a game to have in your collection and can be had on the saturn dreamcast and ps2 as well [Music] the last blade is a really nice weapons based fighter the presentation is awesome unfortunately the neo geocd can't quite handle it as it needs to load all the time here's an example of the cartridge version beginning a stage [Music] now here's that same stage on the neo geo cd yes we are gonna do this in real time just so you know exactly how long it takes to load this game okay we're almost done here we go it loads the stage introduction and then it loads after the stage introduction and yep all that loading was just for that this is really the only neo geocd game where loading is actually an issue in my opinion well this in its sequel um maybe i could tell a story i don't really know of any not off the top of my head anyway um hey have any of you guys ever seen that back to the future movie i've seen it it's pretty cool i wonder what michael j fox thinks of the neo geo okay okay here we go finally after the characters introduce themselves and then talk to each other it loads again and it even loads between different rounds on a match for some reason unless you're an extremely patient person i suggest turning the demo cut on which gets rid of all of the excessive loading and leaves you with just the raw fights it does kind of kill the overall presentation that way but what are you gonna do anyway this game is really fun to play and i love slicing people up with my sword it kind of reminds me of a cross between samurai showdown and maybe guilty gear x you can choose between power and speed abilities and i always go for power of course i'm just a megalomaniac but that leaves me a tiny bit more vulnerable since it takes me a little bit longer to recover from moves and attacks the control is super smooth and the game is just a joy to play the animation is extremely well done and there's that stage scaling that most neo geo fighting games are known for some stages have music while others have environmental sounds which is an interesting choice this is definitely a great game but be sure to buy it on cartridge if you want to get it for a neo geo system hell they probably have a used one right now down at the thrift store for five dollars go check it out the last blade 2 came out a year later you can take pretty much everything i said about the first one and apply it here yeah sadly even the loading issues except now it no longer needs to load between rounds so they improve that an ex ability was added to the speed and power which is kind of a cross between the two but i'm still powermat so i gotta go for that ex is probably the better option though is this game really does not take any of your crap at all if you just barge in the enemy will probably block nearly every single one of your attacks and you'll be unable to block theirs because you're just too damn slow it can be frustrating but it does force you to learn from your mistakes everything here is still great from the graphics the control to the sound this game and its predecessor are some of the best fighting games on the system definitely top tier stuff but again playing it on the cd system i feel that you'll never be able to fully appreciate it but if this one's out of your reach it also came out on the dreamcast and that machine can handle anything the neo geo can dish out bar none in fact that version is probably your best bet and there's a neo geo cd for you what did you think of the system overall dave overall i liked it you know the loading times were you know manageable i think for this this version of this system i've yeah what i know there's other systems that are you know twice as long but yeah um i'm interested i would buy one if you know it didn't cost more to ship it than buy it but yeah yeah you know i think it's a nice system as well i mean the the loading times on the cdz anyway are a lot quicker than the internet and other people would have you to believe right i haven't used a previous neo geocd unit because that would be a lot worse but the loading times on this are roughly equivalent to like a playstation or saturn game yeah it's definitely manageable i mean anything you wouldn't be used to except on the last blade those games just uh again i probably wouldn't buy those anyways but what you're an idiot anyway anyway uh we hope you uh enjoyed our neo geocd episode let us know what you think about the neo geo cd and thank you for watching gamesec [Music] sup oh hey dave check out the neogeo cd it plays arcade games at a somewhat reasonable price well well wait wait a minute you you buy a system that's affordable and games that are affordable how do you live with yourself what is it joe you just want to show me another layman system that anybody could buy not this time dave witness the neo-geo aes [Music] now this is more like it the system and games are so expensive that everyone will be impressed that you can afford such luxuries the neo geo aes makes you stand out above the rest with games costing 200 or even more like neo turf masters here which currently sells for eight thousand dollars merely pocket chain for you but that's well out of the reach of other average gamers the neo geo aes is truly the best way to show your superiority over everyone else congratulations joe you've proven to me that you have more money than since and i'll take your old neo geocd sucker [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to gamesec this is a much requested episode we're actually talking about the 3do this time yeah a lot of requests on this and thanks to a loyal viewer mark lotus one of two of his systems and a butt load of games to play so we were able to bring it to you yeah yeah so anyways let's not dilly dally anymore and why don't you show us the innards and all the specs and all the stuff that only nerdy people can really care about so yeah let's look at the 3do itself the 3do interactive multiplayer 3do was released in 1993 for the low low price of 700 us dollars and dropped about six months later to 500 conceived by electronic arts founder tripp hawkins the 3do company did not manufacture their own consoles instead they licensed the technology out for other manufacturers to make like panasonic as well as lower end brands such as sanyo and goldstar who is now known as lg you could even get a card to put inside your pc to play 3do games this kept the price of the hardware high since the manufacturers generally did not have games of their own to sell to make up the loss of selling the console at a lower price some models of the system featured incompatibility issues with certain games the 3do controller has three standard buttons plus lnr shift buttons there's only one controller jack on the system so multiplayer games required controllers to be daisy chained to each other the games come on cd-rom discs and the hardware features a 32-bit processor running at 12.5 megahertz with two megabytes of ram and one megabyte of vram most variants of the console feature direct av jacks as well as s-video built right in all in all about 2 million 3do consoles were sold worldwide with 312 games released before being discontinued in 1996. all right the system looks all well and good you know the details are laid out the system's pretty cool for its time i think you know a lot of people well i thought it was really cool first time or at least i thought it was before i bought it because i i bought it at launch for seven hundred dollars oh that hurts yeah so and you bought yours like what maybe eight months later yeah for the much reduced price of 500 bucks so that tells you right there that the system wasn't selling great so they went from 700 down to 500 and within the span of but you still didn't feel that you paid enough so you oh of course you got the warranty yeah i was like you know this is crazy i don't feel like i'm doing enough so i'm going to buy that warranty that i'm never going to use so that almost put the price back to 600 bucks yeah so anyways yeah anyway enough of that let's talk about some games you've got the first one so let's go [Music] shockwave is a combat flight simulator game when i originally played this on my 3do i was fairly impressed by the game's graphics i thought the game had some decent backgrounds although there was the usual fog that came with most 3d games at the time the enemy ships all looked good and had some actual textures on them which gave them a more realistic feel i also liked the live action cutscenes which had the usual goofy bad acting you play the game in the cockpit of your fighter and use crosshairs to aim your lasers and missiles you do have complete control over your ship but you follow a fairly narrow path and you can't stray very much if you do go out of the area your ship will take hits until you get back in the play field while you're playing you'll get updates from your flight commander and as usual it's full of tude this isn't a game lieutenant really because it sure feels like i'm playing a game i really don't like this kind of stuff as i'm not fond of someone trying to belittle me does anybody actually like that the levels are all fairly long but they're not very interesting to look at unless you want to see what egypt looks like with about 200 pyramids scattered all around there's absolutely no music while playing each level but you know what i'm kind of fine with that because the music i'd imagine they'd include in the game probably sucks so silence for me is much better playing this game now i feel that it just hasn't aged as well as i'd hoped i'm reading a large concentration of swarm aliens here along with ground support shockwave 2 also came out and it's a 3do exclusive ea did make some changes here and they were good for the most part instead of being on a strict flight path now you have a much larger world to fly around in this feels much better than those cramped corridors of the first game but what doesn't feel better is how weak your ship is for some stupid programming reason you can't go over hills but instead you have to go around them this same ship can destroy all types of enemies but it can't go over a small hill the back of the box says that i can use hills to my strategic advantage well dammit my strategy is to go over these hills and come down on my enemies from above not playing ring around the rosie with a hill between us graphically the game looks very similar to the first there seems to be much more video this time around with all new actors this bunch is just as bad and a few of them are even worse my feelings about this game are pretty much the same as the original it's mediocre at best and it doesn't look very good today if you really like these games then i'm happy for you but they're they're just not for me you have disabled all the two outposts captain remember to disable all seven outposts i will continue to trace the alien vessel flynn i've got a major character super street fighter 2 turbo was an exclusive release for the 3do at the time well if you can count such a variation of the game as an exclusive anyway this version is pretty good and as far as i can tell it was developed by capcom themselves though it was distributed by panasonic it plays just like super street fighter 2 but now with turbo action i never really cared much for some of the changes that they made in super street fighter ii for example guile or wheel or wheelie i don't know anyway now he sounds like a complete [ __ ] his sonic boom sounds more like a suggestion than anything threatening the same exact voice is used for the announcer and he sucks but the game is really fun and the new characters are okay well kami is good but the rest really don't matter much to me this version has some great arranged music that i haven't heard in any other version and that really makes this one stand out supposedly it came from the fm towns version [Music] unfortunately most of the stages lack parallax scrolling as that would probably just be way beyond the 3d o's ability well actually could probably do it it just wouldn't be very smooth you can also send away for a bizarre six button controller which you'll need to get full enjoyment out of this game otherwise you'll be swapping between punches and kicks you can even get a 3d zero adapter to use your super nintendo controllers if you want this is a great game for the 3do [Music] is a first person shooter where you play as a chef who's the only one who survived a crash on an alien planet being a chef you can use unconventional weapons such as a frying pan and a butcher's knife among other things as you can see not only do the aliens have an ugly design but when you get close enough to an alien the spray looks really bad it's it's really extra blocky or something i remember hearing a rumor back in the day about this game's development i heard that there was some fallout between the developers and the 3do company the developers went on to make all the aliens as disgusting as possible like this walking ass that farts at you and such i can't find any information to support this so take it with a grain of salt the game itself plays okay i always had a tough time playing because i'd get motion sickness and feel really nauseous after playing even for a short period of time as far as first person shooter games go on 3do this is one of the least interesting to me and i wouldn't even think twice about passing it up crash and burn was the very first 3do game released and also the packing game for the panasonic fz1 model it was also my only 3do game for several weeks since the launch lineup sucks so much ass this game is the launch lineup anyway this one is a combat racer and also crystal dynamics first game and oh boy does it show you select from a few different racers all with their own extreme personalities and cheesy video my favorite weapon is the missile it's the long distance stab in the back full motion video is the future of video games so of course this game was packed with it during the race you must battle with your opponents and also a bunch of really annoying drone cars that invert the screen colors when they touch you you can select through a variety of different weapons though none of them are very effective of course there's no shortage of landmines all over the track and opponents shooting at you yeah the combat pretty much sucks in this game and it seems wedged in a car's gonna scream when i cream you the racing action isn't very solid either hell there's not even a button for breaking at the time i thought the graphics were pretty cool because it has a really long draw distance it should be noted that this isn't a 3d game you can't turn around and go backwards or anything like that but that's okay the music is mostly forgettable with a few decent tracks overall this game is really more of a curiosity than anything tripped is a puzzle game that plays fairly similar to poyo poyo kirby's avalanche or even dr robotnik's mean bean machine you arrange falling icons on the playfield and when you have four similar ones they explode if you form a square with four similar icons they form one big alien creature if you can destroy this creature by exploding four more icons just like him then he'll explode and do damage to your opponent if you're playing the single player game then it won't matter as all you're doing is going for points the game controls well and i have only one complaint which is that when your tiles are next to a wall you can't always rotate them this makes it tough if you're about to lose because you have no room to rotate your icons there doesn't seem to be much variety in the backgrounds the music isn't very good at all i really didn't care for any of the three tracks that are selectable before playing the game there is a mode called trip dance which lets you make music i guess each button on the control pad has a sound and if you want you can try and make music while random crap happens in the background it's fun for about 5 minutes this game isn't bad and i'd recommend it for someone who's looking for a puzzle game on the 3do [Music] total eclipse by crystal dynamics was the first killer app for the 3do i was eagerly anticipating this one and i thought it would be a game changer well it sure is a good looking game the problem is that they focus more on the graphics and not really at all on the actual gameplay but that's not to say it's all bad it's very straightforward you fly around outside blasting things and also inside tunnels where you blast things you can speed up and slow down and when you're outside you can even roll anytime you want this is more for show and it doesn't really add any advantages but it does help you get killed so i don't recommend you doing it very much you have a life bar which can be refilled by destroying enemies but it's not worth much because it's quite easy to die you also collect different weapons and can power them up but none of them are really very good i find that it's often quite hard to hit your targets in this game and it can be kind of frustrating it's also weird because when you reach the end of the stage it just stops and then fades to black for no reason unless you're on a boss stage the graphics are really good for their time and they boasted 24 frames per second and the game still looks pretty good today i like all of the scaling objects in the tunnel it's just too bad that my ship is so hard to navigate through them believe it or not the music is actually really really good and of course that means there's no sound test or any easy way to rip the music overall it's a mindless tech demo certainly not worth full price but much better than crash and burn cyber dillo is another first person shooter starring an armadillo i didn't get a chance to play this one as much as i wanted to but i'm kind of fine with that the game has a very choppy engine so it makes it really tough to maneuver your character i'll give the designers props though because this is a hugely colorful game and i like that you have a basic weapon which is a plunger and you can get a secondary weapon which is a bit more powerful the levels are all laid out fairly well but you need to keep an eye on where you've been otherwise you'll find yourself running around in circles without even knowing it the radar helps a little bit but i think it could have been better the music is okay and it matches the disco theme of this level pretty good i guess this isn't a horrible first person shooter but then again there are still better ones out there [Music] guardian war is a strategy rpg by micro cabin you play as a statue who's been resurrected by the goddess of giant hair to save the land from the evil azrael you visit shrines to resurrect other statues to help you fight in your battles the battles themselves are pretty typical strategy rpg stuff it works like shining force only much more simplified and much much slower basically you just wander around the map and take out all of the enemies there once you're done with that you're allowed to move on to the next map where you do the same thing again the stage graphics are pretty weird looking since they've all been digitized from real-world objects the enemies are simple computer-rendered shapes that have also been digitized into the game overall it's not very appealing even back then the music is pretty damn good though and it's the one thing that kept me playing for as long as i did back when i owned the game but overall the game is just too slow and boring and i never made it more than a few hours in [Music] [Applause] [Music] stellar seven draxon's revenge by dynamics as a game i bought simply because there was absolutely nothing else available at the time there really isn't a lot to say about this one it's a sled game where you slide around and shoot things and you also have the world's most useless map to try and figure out where things are the opening narration was done by michael dorn so i guess it has that going for it which is nice yeah jackson is using these warp links to marshal his invasion fleet in seven systems within striking distance of mankind's home world the graphics are okay and the music is pretty good but one thing that i really liked about this game was the sound effects in fact if you have a subwoofer hooked up check this out the sound of that canon used to shake my room really hard back in that day but in all honesty i really wish i never bought this game space hulk is a first person shooter that i was really excited to play i'd heard a lot of great things about this game but i also heard that it was overly difficult so that was the reason i never bought it back in the day playing the game now is just an exercise in frustration you control one of a handful of space marines trying to complete different objectives you can switch between them if you want but good luck with that you've got thick metallic suits on but that won't stop you from getting killed quickly for realism's sake you move about as fast as a snail which sucks and you rotate even slower the aliens will swarm you and you can fight hand to hand i guess but i can never tell if i'm throwing a punch because sometimes the alien will die but most of the time i die there's lots of tight corridors in this game so when you get sandwiched by enemies you are done in the bigger rooms it would have been helpful if there was a stray faction i just can't understand a first person shooter that doesn't let you straight on the positive side the graphics are very nice the aliens are great and look really scary the detail of the environments are the best i've seen in a game for this system too bad the game is so damn hard as it would be great fun if you were ever given a chance here they come again we've talked about the 32-bit version of road rash before i feel that it's the best version of any road rash game and this right here is the best version of any 32-bit road rash on any console this really is electronic arts at the top of their game the racing action is super fun and beating up your opponents never ever gets old you even get to beat up on cops and it feels really satisfying and who can forget running over countless pedestrians like old ladies the graphics kind of look like an upgraded version of crash and burn in that you can only go forward not turn around or drive in a 3d space but that's okay this game doesn't need to do that this game also happens to have one of the best uses for full motion video ever with tons of great cutscenes depending on the result of the race it even has a fantastic licensed soundtrack that's not forced on you while you play the actual game everything here was just done so well and it really was a treat to play this back in 1994 when this came out i'll tell you this much if this game hadn't been ported to other consoles i would still have my original 3do to this day this game needs to be in everyone's librarian in my opinion it's the best game for the system [Music] well i got stuck with plumbers don't wear ties and it's basically an interactive slideshow why'd you give me this game joe why why i'm guessing at some point you'll get to see some fmv with this girl stripping for you but good luck getting to that point you're gonna need a lot of patience this game is played out through a ton of slides with some voice over acting once you get to a decision point you can pick what to do in certain scenarios even if you pick the wrong one you can retry and pick another option the problem is that you cannot skip any dialogue you must sit and watch every scenario play out even if it's the wrong choice it's so painful to watch this interactive experience because each scene just drags on and on and on i could only play this for about an hour i just had to turn it off it's horrible i just can't believe they didn't enable some sort of shortcut button to let you just go straight to the choice screen if you're offended by sexism racism or any ism for that matter then don't play this game as it's not for you hell it's not for me either what a waste i didn't even get to see any boobs hey babe looking for some action what do you got in mind cowboy oh maybe go to my place you know hang out have a beer get laid you know get laid you're gonna need some help in that department what do you mean help all right that's about 13 or 14 games down about just as many to go what are you thinking so far to 3do well it's bringing up some memories of the buyer's remorse that i had of some of the games i played and i just didn't feel were worth it at the time along with a huge price tag but anyways you know i'm kind of remembering why i sold the system but you know on the other hand i'm finding a lot of good games that i do remember that i had a lot of good times with yeah hey let's take a look at the rest of the rest of them way of the warrior is a digitized one-on-one fighting game by naughty dog this one has a bad reputation and it's easy to see why none of the characters are appealing and it almost seems like the developers just got friends and family to be in the game for them the control sucks but that should really come as no surprise i find it very painful to play but while the character graphics look awful i do kind of like the graphics of the different stages they all have some good depth and scroll smoothly something that 3do generally isn't well known for naughty dog did a good job on that aspect the music is by white zombie and if you like it that's cool i guess to me it gets repetitive very quickly as there aren't a lot of different songs and the ones that are here all sound very similar to each other some people actually do like this game a lot and are able to get quite a bit of enjoyment out of it captain quasar is an isometric running gun game for some strange reason i'm not completely turned off by the isometric view like i usually am in fact this game is actually quite entertaining there's lots of action going on all the time with enemies constantly trying to kill you that's cool because you have plenty of weapons at your disposal the weapons are limited but not so limited that you have to be frugal there were only a couple of times that i ran out of machine gun bulls but that's because i was laying it on fairly thick not to worry because ammo and health are scattered throughout the level speaking of the levels they're huge and it'll take you quite a while to complete the objective of each world there are teleporters here and there but they aren't useful unless you have a code you get caused by talking to enemy soldiers who've surrendered they'll also give you other hints that will help you on your way i wasn't impressed by the music nor was i impressed by the voice of captain quasar he doesn't talk during gameplay thank god but his little grunts and all the sounds he makes are pretty annoying a pretty good title for the 3do even if it tries to be more funny than it actually is but i think it's worth a try [Music] the need for speed is a very descriptive title this game needs speed badly because it doesn't have any at all this right here is as speedy as the game gets this is the very first game in the need for speed series and to be quite honest there's really not much of a game here and you can take me on sure you can race your rival but he's pretty easy but hey fancy driving there's also trying to outrun the cops which only really threaten you for a second or two and then there's dealing with the regular traffic on the surface that's pretty much all there is to the game there's three different areas to race in with three segments each and a whole bunch of cars to choose from everything is extremely slow and it controls horribly there's not even any music you suck wind big time buddy actually i did get a bit of enjoyment out of this when it was new because the graphics are pretty damn impressive for their time i like being able to run over giant trees as well but nowadays it's just kind of painful to play oh what's wrong does it with a race car driver want to go home the gameplay was updated for the playstation and saturn versions a bit actually they updated them a lot there's way more tracks and new modes to play look at this i'm actually driving a little bit slower in the playstation version but it plays so much faster and smoother it's almost like they actually finished developing this version [Music] star control 2 is a really cool space adventure game you control a precursor spaceship and you must gather all alien races to help you in defeating the ruling urquan race you play the game by building up your ship so it can be able to cross vast amounts of space you get the money necessary to build your ship by mining minerals off planets and selling them it's all super easy as you just fly over the minerals to collect them as you make your way through space you'll meet lots of different types of aliens you can ask them questions and find out their intentions if the conversation goes well they'll help you but if it doesn't go well then you'll have to fight them fighting is easy if your ship is fast enough and can maneuver well if not then you're going to be dead meat like i was here it really pays to mine and outfit your ship so that you can meet any challenge the universe is humongous and there are over 3 000 planets to explore if you choose there's tons of dialogue and it's all very well done that was the erkon security drone it keeps an eye on us captain what happened to the spy drone there's not a lot of music mainly just ambient space sounds but there is one tune that i really like while you're in hyperspace it has a great beat that really fits the mood of being in hyperspace which i've never been in [Music] it's amazing because back when i owned a 3do i played a little bit of this game and i hated it now that i've played it again for this episode i've come to really like it if i ever get another 3do this will be a definite purchase it's a really fun game and i wish i could spend a lot more time with it another small load captain we shall await your return captain burning soldier is an fmv shooter designed by genki in this one you guide your crosshairs over the screen and shoot down enemies in their attacks as you try to save earth now this looks pretty simple doesn't it i admit there really isn't that much to the game but honestly i was surprised because i enjoyed it a lot more than i thought i would the action is fast paced the game never keeps you waiting and the load times are nearly non-existent the video is pretty grainy but it works you'll be spending more time looking at the objects that you need to shoot down as quickly as you can anyway it's very satisfying shooting things in this game maybe it's the sound of the explosions i'm not sure but i like it and the music is really good and makes me want to keep trying this is a good one check it out if you have a 3do [Music] cannon fodder is a real-time strategy game with a point and click interface it actually controls really well using the standard d-pad and i had no problems controlling my cursor i like this game as it's fairly simple in the fact that you have a small amount of soldiers all have unlimited machine guns and you can also use grenades and bazookas once you pick them up every mission that i played was straightforward kill all enemies and destroy enemy buildings right at the beginning of each level you should look at the map to know where you're going it's very helpful so don't forget you can break your soldiers up into different groups which also is another great idea it's better to only send in one or two soldiers at a time in case they get into a situation that gets them killed the graphics aren't bad and i'm fine with your soldiers being so small as it makes them a smaller target there's no music that plays during the game so you just get to enjoy the sound effects of bullets flying and soldiers dying this is a great addition to the 3do library and i'm glad i got a chance to play we've talked about return fire on the playstation before but the 3do version came first and for the most part it's pretty much the same choose from four different vehicles in your epic struggle to capture the enemy's flag basically you use your tanks armored vehicles and helicopters to clear a path for the jeep the jeep is the only vehicle that can grab the flag and bring it back to your base capturing the enemy's flag is all it takes to win the war do that and you're greeted with a ticker tape parade who's gonna clean all that up geez this is a great game with a fantastic classical soundtrack you've gotta get it if you have a 3do huh virtuoso huh this looks like a really good game let's try this oh wow it is a really good game now this is what the 3do experience is all about you take control of earth's greatest warrior who happens to be a hirsute gentleman with two shotguns your goal is to wander around the expertly crafted levels and find the key after you accomplish this mission you make your way towards the exit and that part of the universe is now safe forever but your enemies are very formidable and frightening you'll have to shoot a bunch of pigeons and even a giant snowball life has not been kind to our leather jacket laden champion of justice but fortunately he can shoot open these spheres to reveal items like extra health the controls are beyond perfection and you'll never have any difficulty picking the direction you want to go it's like i'm controlling it with my mind data east made this game huh to this day the graphics are still without equal ah just kidding this game sucks next gex was the mascot for 3do and you know what i thought he made a great one i really enjoyed the first game in the series as it's a straightforward platformer that's really fun to play yeah it has a few problems but they can easily be forgotten firstly gex has a voice silent green is good usually game characters like this with a voice tend to say the same lines over and over again this is no different as all you'll hear is tons of repeated lines kill your tv man fortunately they were done by comedian dana gould and some of the wisecracks gecks makes are fairly funny excuse me but the law of diminishing returns does apply here and by the 50th time you hear hey scoob let's get back to the mystery van you get pretty annoyed also the scrolling isn't as smooth as it could be but this was fixed in the playstation and saturn versions of this game lastly the screen rubber bands every time you turn around it's very noticeable and actually annoying at times that's it and other than those minor gripes i think this is a great game gex controls really well and is super easy to cling to walls and climb all over the place the boss fights are fun and some have some really cool graphical effects i really do recommend this game and it was a really nice addition to the 3do library oh yeah yeah it's tail time geronimo is a quick time event-based game similar to dragon's lair basically the story is that you save god's life so he sends you on a quest to fetch a bunch of crystals to create the world yeah we've actually reviewed this game already in our laser active episode where it was called triad stone it had a different story i think but the game is the same the 3do version here is much easier though in fact it's almost too easy the video is also a very poor quality and overexposed so it looks really bad there's definitely some fun to be had here but i think i like the laser active version more killing time is yet another first person shooter for the system why don't you play these joes it's always me playing first person shooters it seems that some rich lady got a hold of an egyptian water clock that's supposed to grant people eternal life as usual something went wrong and turned her her friends and all the servants etc into ghosts it's your job to find the water clock and destroy it this is an interesting title and i like the idea behind the gameplay as you play the game you run into ghosts who act out different scenes which help fill in clues as to what's going on it's all live action and believe it or not it actually works really well the graphics are fairly good and it's one of the better looking first person shooters on the system unfortunately the frame rate is really choppy and i get motion sickness really bad after just a short amount of play the game has some very big areas that get confusing quickly but luckily there's a good map to help you on the way other than that the game controls well and i found the sound and music to be very fitting this game actually might be a little bit ahead of its time i wouldn't mind a new game like this on a current gen system that could handle a higher frame rate i had a lot of fun with this game up until i got nauseous for me it's great in short spurts [Music] here's blade force by studio 3do this is a helicopter collect-a-thon where you basically fly around huge mazes and collect little boxes actually you're trying to destroy all the green targets on your map and then fight the boss you're in the future and you've got to stop all the big crime lords and apparently they're all susceptible to attack by helicopter good thing i have a helicopter it's very easy to get lost since everything looks exactly the same and the areas are ginormous the map itself is even confusing and it really doesn't help much at all it controls pretty well and the frame rate is pretty high for a 3do game but man the collision detection is just horrible look at that i can't even get by even though i'm not touching anything that's just sad it also doesn't help that the draw distance is so short i think this could be really fun if the level design and the collision weren't so bad but as it stands i can't even make it to the end of the first level and i did try many times the horde is an action strategy game where you play the role of chauncey who is played by kirk cameron you save the king from choking to death at dinner and in return he gives you a nice plot of land in his sword which is strange here's my sword every season of the year you develop your land and build barriers to protect your people from the evil horde of course doing all of this building and whatnot isn't free so you need to earn money by cutting down mature trees that you plant as saplings also you get money if you own cows in from harvesting the crops of the people plant just like in real life each season only lasts for two minutes so you have to do a lot in very little amount of time once the season ends the horde comes to your crops and villagers and also to tear down your buildings if everything lives you'll make money for that season that you can use to better your defenses plant trees and develop the land there's many types of horde that you need to kill some are slow and some are fast some will only take one hit to kill and others can take many hits your best bet is to set traps like spikes in the ground or to build fences and walls to keep the horde away or to try to channel them to one spot it's tough though as your own town grows pretty quickly fortunately controlling the game and the combat is really easy but it does suck sometimes because if you swing your sword too much you get dizzy and you can't have a dizzy kirk cameron trying to save your village it's all a great idea and a really fun game to play when i owned my 3do this was one of my favorite games [Music] lucian's quest lucines by microcabin is an actual jrpg in fact it's the only traditional rpg for the system and this one you play is lucian who tricked aggo into taking her with him on a quest to cure him of becoming a wolf man it's a typical jrpg with an overworld battles and towns where you stock up and talk to npcs this game has a day and night cycle and when it's night time aggo becomes a wolf his attacks also become a bit more powerful as a result and that's kind of cool the cycles pass pretty quickly and it never stays day or night for very long unless you're in a town or dungeon where time freezes you get to wander around and pick up other members to join you in your quest and all that this game really doesn't have the best story or dialogue in the world but whatever it works as you probably noticed the game is pretty choppy it's also very slow as you navigate menus or go through doors or into houses you do kind of get used to it after you've been playing it for a while though but hey at least the music is pretty good [Music] one interesting thing about the battles is that you often need to clear the terrain of obstacles before you can attack your enemies or even before they can reach you so yeah you'll be wasting a lot of your attacks on trees and bushes and the like i don't really care much for that aspect still it's a fairly confident game and it doesn't get cumbersome or boring to play if you like jrpgs and super low frame rates this is the game for you it was also updated and released for the saturn in japan as sword and sorcery [Music] all right everybody there you have it that's the 3do and a nice what do we have like 27 games in there or something like that that we showed of the there's the decent-sized library but anyways well what do you think joe after you played it and do you miss yours well yeah like i said in the mid segment that i kind of remembered why i sold it there are a lot of goofy games that they were trying to do with the 3do and just it was kind of ahead of its time they were trying to do too much with it yeah and but there were a lot of good games that i really remembered and had and i had good times with that i actually prefer the 3d versions and you know what i ended up buying a 3do for my very own i'm not kidding wow so on ebay or locally well yeah okay well apparently yeah so anyways well that's that's that's cool because you know i i haven't bought one but if i do find one for a decent price i would actually probably like to pick it up again because some of the games that i did play i had the same yeah a lot of good memories with and um playing them again really just stoked the fires of those memories again yeah but um can't live without kirk cameron in the horde oh my gosh yeah definitely such a wonderful guy well i'm gonna come over and play your system i guess no you're not anyway let us know what you guys think about the 3do and in the meantime thank you for watching game [Music] sack [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] wow hello and welcome to game sack we're talking about the retron 5 emulation machine or whatever whatever you want to call it uh you probably already watched five reviews about it from other reviewers but ours is the only one you really need it really is and thanks to eric from let's get for lending us his unit that's him on the tv conveniently located behind us and he's also on the video game years which we're on too and i even edit part of that so you should watch that it's a great show and it's a great history lesson yeah anyway we tested out the retron 5 and we've come to our certain conclusions and in the meantime let's tell you a little bit more about the console itself yeah the hyperkin retron 5. this 140 unit plays games for the genesis and mega drive super nintendo and super famicom nes regular non-super famicom as well as game boy game boy color and game boy advance it comes with a wireless controller that has a micro switch control pad similar to the neo geo pocket color though the build quality isn't quite as nice you can plug in real genesis nes and super nes controllers to use them to play games from any platform and if you've got a player too hey there's controller ports on the other side light guns for any system are just not gonna work in order to turn the unit on you must press and hold the power button on the console and wait and wait and wait takes a while the console features an hdmi output only and outputs at 720p 60 frames per second the retron 5 runs on an android based operating system with a zealing spartan fpga and a rockchip processor there's 1.2 gigabytes of internal storage for save files screenshots save states and you can also put in an sd card for added space and no the system will not play roms off of the sd card but you know some people are probably going to hack it sometime in the future that's because the sd card which you provide yourself is the method that you'll use to update the firmware there's tons of settings in the main menu screen where you can apply different filters audio adjustments controller button mappings and so on to use cheats in the game you gotta download a file from hyperkin's website step five is enjoy i had trouble with step five the cartridges are pretty tough to insert and often even more difficult to remove it's like they didn't even measure the thickness of the pcb boards when designing the thing look at these pins on the super nintendo slot they're already bent out of shape same with the famicom slot now they still work but it makes me kind of wonder about hyperkin's quality control please kill me during gameplay there are several graphical filters that you can apply these can be done via the in-game menu which you can access by pressing down and start at the same time each and every one of these causes a slight loss in detail and to be honest i don't care for the look of any of them they look really smeary there's also a scanline mode if you like that kind of thing it makes playing on a non-crt tv a little bit more tolerable i guess but i usually leave it off anyway the video output quality is pretty damn good here's how sonic looks on the retron 5. nice and clear with none of the smearing that you'd normally see in composite video on a real system and here's how sonic looks on a real genesis this right here was recorded in rgb and every real genesis has an rgb video output built right in though most tvs in the us can't accept such a signal now while the audio isn't 100 accurate to the real systems i imagine is close enough for most people here's how the real genesis sounds and here's the retron 5. [Music] and here's the enhanced audio mode [Music] sounds like you're in a hollow tunnel or a big room i didn't care for the enhanced audio mode you have to back all the way out to the main menu to access the audio stuff you can't access it via the in-game menu now let's do the same comparison on a bit of music from streets of rage 2. [Music] the makers of the retron 5 hyperkin have stated that they wanted as close to 100 compatibility as they could possibly get so how'd they do well on the super nintendo star fox plays fine and that one features a super fx chip however doom which also features an fx chip had problems initially we couldn't even get it to work at all but when we did it looked like this and i don't think it's supposed to look like that super mario rpg a game which is known to have issues with clone consoles seems to work well enough for me but i couldn't get the save files to write back to the cartridge this feature currently doesn't work very well at all in fact i was never able to get it to work fortunately there's a save state feature which lets you take snapshots at any time during a game you can later resume from that point a super famicom game tales of fantasia seemed to run okay but it didn't read my save files correctly from the cart super castlevania 4 of course runs well enough it'd be a crime if this one didn't work the super game boy loads up but it won't load the game boy game inserted into it over on the genesis side streets of rage 2 works well but look at the floor as the screen is growing that looks awful but if you enable the force original resolution option in the system menu that's fixed in fact i recommend leaving that enabled all the time even though the screen ends up being slightly smaller it makes the game look more accurate as a result musha works great but if you have this game you probably already have a real genesis as well now everyone is probably wondering if altered beast works it does gamestack is the only show on the internet that is brave enough to test altered beast welcome now how about japanese mega drive games well they fit in the slot and games like kerr seem to run fine but mega drive games made by sunsoft well they won't fit so if you want to play panorama cotton you can just go straight to hell how about virtua racing which contains a special chip in the cartridge it runs pretty well and i'll also take this opportunity to mention that the six button controller also seems to work well except for the mode button in some games like techno clash the mode button can be pressed to use health potions that you've stored up when i press it the retron 5 simply doesn't recognize it at all and i die that sucks okay what about sonic and knuckles yeah it seems to run fine but what about sonic 3 and knuckles nope the retron 5 only sees sonic and knuckles the game genie loads up and allows you to input codes but it won't run any games attached to it it just keeps resetting so how about watermelon's 2010 genesis rpg pure solar well after a rather lengthy loading period it says unknown cartridge it loads the first screen for a micro second and then you get nothing but a red screen how about beggar prince which is a localized chinese rpg nope it doesn't even see the cart in fact it doesn't see any of superfighter teams carts if you have a power based converter you can even play sega master system games here's castle of illusion in case you haven't guessed that already how about some rastan it turns out if the game makes use of the fm sound hardware in the japanese master system it runs the game in fm [Music] there's no option to listen to the normal psg soundtrack so how about wonder boy 3 which will only run in fm if it boots on a japanese system yep it comes up as monster world 2 and runs in fm even if you force the usa region in the system settings it still boots up as monster world 2. apparently the region settings don't work very well now while the retron 5 will not work with the master system controller you can still play games that require it like alien syndrome using the genesis controller can't do that on a real system what's interesting is that f-16 fighting falcon works and this game doesn't even run on the genesis since it requires a legacy sg-1000 mode which the genesis just doesn't have so the retron 5 could potentially run sg-1000 games how about sega master system 3d games well it runs them but only in 2d the screen doesn't flicker back and forth like it would if it were running in 3d mode if you plug the glasses into the powerbase converter the glasses darken and occasionally flutter but they don't flicker back and forth like they do when running a 3d game on a real master system or genesis that's because they're not being controlled by the software when they're running on the retron 5. okay how about the 32x nope you guessed it doesn't work but if you apply power to it and insert a regular genesis game that game will actually load and run it will load up 32x games but it won't recognize the carts and it won't run them if only the cart slot would allow 32x games to fit then it could potentially run 32x games with the firmware update even without the 32x hardware i'm amazed that hyperkin didn't even think about that things seem to mostly work on the nes side some games have an occasional glitch in the graphics but most of the ones i tried work fine 3d world runner works and even the 3d mode works if you have a pair of red and blue anaglyph glasses the 3d in this game sucks though castlevania 3 works well and this one has an mmc 5 chip on the cart even the japanese version of castlevania 3 works this one does not have an mmc 5 it has a different helper chip and also a special sound chip to boost the music quality over what the nes is normally capable of fortunately you get to hear the extra audio channel on the retron 5. so how does it compare to the real thing well here's how it sounds on the retron 5. [Music] and here's how it sounds on a real system the famicom game quinte is recognized but for some reason it doesn't run at all amazingly the us version which is called mendel's palace runs fine on the gameboy side we had to give the castlevania adventure a good cleaning before it worked but it eventually did ducktales 2 worked fine as did blaster master boy man is this blaster master or friggin bomberman for the gameboy color we tried r type dx it plays well and even in color wow game boy games in color who would have thought i don't have too many game boy advance games but super monkey ball jr seems to run this game kinda sucks though it really needs an analog controller here's a much better game f0 maximum velocity it runs well except that it didn't load my game saves from the cart properly for comparison here's what it looks and sounds like while running on the gamecube's game boy player in 480p over component video drilldozer plays fine but the cartridge does not rumble kirby tilt and tumble fails to load the rom and it's too bad too can you even imagine how fun this would be to play on the retron 5 absolutely no flash carts that i tried were able to work overall the retron 5 plays a lot of video games and the ones that doesn't can possibly be fixed with a future firmware update but will they [Music] all right that's the hyperkin retron 5. dave what are your opinions well in all honesty joe it's not for me i mean i'd rather have five different pieces of hardware to play all these games instead of just one where you actually have to have the cartridge in the slot to play the game and you're not guaranteed that the game's gonna work true you know so it has some compatibility issues obviously um if that's something that you like that's great and you maybe you want to save on space uh but you're gonna still need a lot of games to you know actual games to play on these things yes because it does not run roms no no which is crazy but you know who knows maybe the retron 5.1 run rumps but who knows i don't know what are your what are your thoughts well well like you it's not something that i would actually purchase yeah it's just not for me i i'm kind of a purist i know people don't necessarily like that they think it's like elitism or whatever but i just like playing on the real consoles but this was really fun to play with it's just not something i would get and um i don't know it's just you can update the firmware so the compiled compatibility issues may be fixed in the future but in order to download the firmware there's you can't even find a firmware download link on hyperkin's retron 5 site it's nowhere to be found in fact the only place i was able to find the firmware download link was on hyperkin's facebook page which is not really very intuitive no that's that's horrible yeah and i guess they fixed some of the uh cartridge save transfer bugs and stuff like that since and uh what i would also like to see is game genie and like proaction replay support where you can just put in the codes instead of having to download a cheat uh file from hyperkin's website which is totally also non-intuitive and not very convenient just put you know a little code entry thing into the software i don't know but it's just not really fun yeah it just needs a lot more work i mean it's a good start but it's it's not there yet yeah not completely there but it is interesting a little interesting product there and again thanks to eric for letting us check out your hybrid in retron 5. thanks eric and maybe i'll even give it back to you and in the meantime thank you for watching game sag [Music] oh yeah it's gonna be nice if they like the playstation video they are going to love this one oh my goodness oh yeah you give it to that retron 5. oh yeah only 6 127 more frames to go and this will be ready what are you doing dude what are you doing here i'm getting back by this is mine you're going to give it a virus i shudder to think what you would have done with these ports [Music] [Music] [Applause] so [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to game sack we're talking about the sega cd a much requested episode here we finally are yeah another sega console episode of course don't we like do one of these every other month or something like that no well all right joe well you got some convincing to do so you know give it to us all right well let's here's a little bit about the sega cd itself the sega cd welcome to the next level known as the mega cd throughout most of the world the sega cd was released midway through the life of the mega drive genesis it was the second cd system released for a console after the turbo graphics 16 cd-rom it was introduced in the us in late 1992 at a price of 300. it attached to the genesis via the expansion slot on the side and it required its very own power supply the original sega cd had a motorized tray but the model 2 had a flip top lid to lower the price this model is generally more reliable as well there were even some all-in-one systems that had a genesis and cd built into a single unit like the wonder mega or xi from jvc sega also had their own compact all-in-one unit called the cdx also known as the multimega the sega cd had its very own 68000 processor running at 12.5 megahertz and asics to perform complex scaling and an 8 channel pcm sound chip most of the games came in extremely fragile oversized plastic long boxes in the us in order to stand out on store shelves the games themselves are of course on cds which can feature over 4 500 mega power overall there were 210 games released for the sega cd and it sold over 2.7 million units worldwide all right joe well that's pretty cool what you said and uh you know i'm slowly slowly coming around to this whole sega cd thing but you know of course they'll it's gonna be in the games what are the games all about are we going to do all those fmv games i mean actually we've we've already done an episode with all the fmv games so let's focus on the non-fmv stuff yeah the good stuff yeah so let's just get right on into it do you like blade runner you wish it were full of humor then snatcher by konami is the game for you this here is one of the most sought after games on the system and is becoming more expensive all the time it's a cyberpunk digital comic and it really does live up to the hype and it's the only version of the game that's ever been released in english but then again i really love digital comic style games so maybe i'm biased anyway you play as gillian seed who is a brand new junker who conveniently has amnesia a junker's job is to take down a snatcher and the snatcher is an android who wears human skin kind of like the terminator or maybe even a replicant from blade runner anyway snatchers are running amuck in the city of neo-kobe and people are fearing for their lives you see snatchers kill their victims and take their place in society you progress through the game by selecting various text commands you'll often have to ask the same question multiple times before the answer changes and the story can advance now this style of gameplay may not be for everybody but personally i love it i'd say that this harry has put himself in a pretty dangerous spot there are also sections where you get to fight in sectors these are little robot spider thingies sent to try and stop you you can use the d-pad on your controller or you can use konami's justify your light gun i find the controller to be a lot easier but to be honest the gun is slightly more fun these scenes show up here and there as a simple means to give you some action sequences as limited as they may be overall this game has tons of atmosphere there's great little details all over the place in the graphics if you look hard enough one really cool part is inside the outer heaven club you'll see people dressed up as a bunch of different konami characters even all of the various japanese versions of this game aren't as cool as this one is inside of outer heaven there's lots of voices and almost all of them are very well done are you telling me queens has underground treatment facilities there's also some really cool music that sets up the mood and provides plenty of tension it even has your typical hideo kojima trademark such as cut scenes lasting half an hour i greatly enjoy the story and it's easy to see that this game was inspired almost entirely by movies you've got gillian seed and the snatchers themselves both from blade runner with the snatchers resembling the terminator the post-apocalyptic setting and visuals are very similar to akira and random hajjio here is clearly sting from the runaway smash hit movie dune i've played through this game many many times since i bought it back when it was released i even bought the justifier to go with it on the same day it's such a great game and konami did an excellent job here gillian i read motion use extreme caution the signal is coming from outside the window it's alice the dog is dead body temperature suggests it was killed about 10 minutes ago no doubt the work of snatchers here's the amazing spider-man versus the kingpin this is a really cool action platformer that's a completely different game from the cartridge version but parts of it are kind of strange and really didn't tingle my spidey senses i mean i really like how this game is set up you have an overhead map of new york and you can pick any level you want to play through the strange thing for me is that when i play through most of these levels i have no feelings of accomplishment you see when you pick a level you can basically go from the beginning to the end and not kill a single person and it'll be counted as complete you usually fight through a sub level or two before your spidey senses alert you to the boss these fights are fairly enjoyable it's an interesting idea that you aren't locked into a screen during a fight for example if you're fighting doctor octopus and he's kicking your ass you can simply leave and find a health power up and then go back and resume your battle i kinda like that spider-man controls really well obviously he can cling to walls and ceilings he can use his webs to detain enemies or animals until you kill them and of course he can swing on his web this is a fun thing to do and it really feels good once you get going there's a lot of variety in the areas you trigger so the levels never get boring to look at some of them are almost maze-like and i find myself wandering all over the place trying to find the exit being a cd game you can expect animated cutscenes with lots of voice acting it's all really light-hearted and enjoyable but i'm not really liking the art style here is it just me or does spidey's eye look sunken in there's also a decent soundtrack to this game by spencer nielsen it's got a few really good songs and a couple that i'm just wondering how they made it in with the rest of them i don't like hearing some dude singing butt rock while i'm playing a game it just isn't right all in all this is definitely a great game for the system and if you own a sega cd then you really need to own this one [Music] ah3 thunderstrike is a cool helicopter game by core it's called thunderhawk everywhere else outside of the us i don't know why we're so special this is an objective based game where you fly on missions to destroy certain things or to escort friendlies across a danger zone it takes place in the 3d world you can fly anywhere at any time well that is as long as you stay inside the large rectangular battle zone area leaving in this area ends your mission there's lots of things to blow up but the primary targets are all you really need to worry about once those are blown up your mission is usually complete your copter has pre-supplied weapons like missiles and rockets but your main gun has unlimited ammo the control in this game is really good turning is smooth and quick and it's easy to avoid enemy attacks in fact the entire game is kind of easy but that's okay as there are around 50 different missions to complete so it's gonna take you a while it's really satisfying blowing stuff up and i spent a lot of time with it when i bought it back when it was new it puts the sega cd scaling and rotation abilities to really good use unfortunately the colors do leave a lot to be desired but it doesn't detract from the fun the music's pretty damn good but sadly there's not a whole lot of it so you're going to be hearing a lot of the same tunes again and again if you play through all 50 missions despite having a rather simple premise to the gameplay i really do recommend that you give this one a shot incoming bandits final fight cd is a great release for the system at the time this was the closest you could get to having the arcade version in your house the super nintendo version only had two playable characters this version did it right and had all three fighters available to choose from also unlike the super nes version this lets you play two players at once did sega pay capcom to [ __ ] the super nintendo version or something anyways the game plays great for the most part there are some instances when i feel a slight lag when trying to do simple things like a jump kick it kind of sucks but you do get used to it and compensate for it as the game goes on it's not an easy game either it can be done but it'll take some practice and you'll definitely be using those continues the graphics look great the character and enemy sprites are huge they also all animate really well hey at least they left poison and roxy in the game this time although they are slightly censored and have more clothing on than they do in the japanese version can't show too much like i guess another feature that i always like about this game is the bonus stage i like the thought of somebody totaling the car with his bare hands also included is the time attack mode pick your character and see how long you can last waves of enemies come at you and they just get stronger and stronger the longer you last it's a really fun side game and i like that you fight in different backgrounds so it doesn't get boring probably the best upgrade to this port is the music it's been given an all-new arranged soundtrack and most of it is really enjoyable they even voiced the intro to this game when i'd watched the opening sequence in other versions the voices i gave them in my head sounded nothing like the voices i'm hearing here stupid sega can't even make the voices sound like i originally imagined them jessica my sweetheart since childhood anyways this is a great addition to the systems library and it's a library that's really lacking in quality beat em ups [Music] [Music] [Applause] dark wizard is a strategy rpg released by sega in 1994. the ultimate goal in the game is to defeat the evil dark wizard felonies at the beginning you choose one of four different characters what's cool about that is that each character has their own perspective of the story to play through the game plays as your typical hexagonal strategy rpg you move your troops around and you fight battles when you're next to the enemies if you want you can watch these battles play out as animated scenes or turn them off and view them as text now having text battles is nowhere near as satisfying but it greatly speeds things up so you're probably gonna go the text route shortly into the game you can also enter cities in order to talk to people buy stuff and progress the story your ultimate goal in most of the battles is to capture the enemy's castle and recruit new members which you have to pay for the graphics are fair i like the battles but i felt that they could have used some backgrounds instead of just a plain black screen the super long cut scenes for the story are really nice the music is excellent and there's a lot of different themes and they're all very well composed in fact it might even be the highlight of this game you can't really go wrong with dark wizard as it's a long in-depth and fun strategy game though there is another strategy rpg on the sega cd which i think is definitely better hmm i wonder which game that could be [Music] so shining force cd is a special treat for sega fans and even for people like me this is not an entirely new game it's actually a remake of the two game gear games shining force guide in one and two it also has two new scenarios that are exclusive to this release the first two can be played right from the beginning once you complete these you'll unlock the third scenario the fourth scenario is unlocked after finding a hidden item in beating scenario 3. what's interesting is that you'll need a cd backup cartridge if you plan on playing the whole game as the internal memory isn't big enough to save all the files necessary to unlock the last scenario stupid sega as you can see this is a strategy rpg game in my opinion the shining force series has no rival when it comes to this genre sure nintendo has the fire emblem series but they ruined it because once a character dies they're dead for the whole game i really don't like that not in shining force once a character dies you can just spend some money and revive them later anyway the remake of these game gear games looks and sounds great on the sega cd the reason i like this series so much is that they're not trying to be too deep in terms of gameplay as i've said before i really don't like spending more time messing around in menus than actually playing the game and this one has none of that it has just the right amount of gameplay versus time wasted in menus everything is straightforward and easy which in turn makes for a really relaxed game the way everything is set up is also really easy as you finish one battle you'll have a short scene with text and then you typically visit a town though it's not like the towns that are in the cartridge shining force games instead it's just a single screen but you can still buy weapons and accessories you can also heal yourself and revive the fallen and of course the most important thing you can do is save your progress after that then you get put into the next battle scenario the battles are really fun and for as low as they might seem they're really engaging there's a lot of strategy involved in traversing a map treasure chest can be anywhere and you'll want to seek them out because they usually have some awesome stuff inside this is a great game to play in small spurts as each battle can be anywhere from 20 to 50 minutes it really is one of the best games i've played on the sega cd soul star is another cool sega cd game by core in this one you fly a spaceship as you try to save the soul star system from the invading murkoys or some other such nonsense the entire game takes place in a third person perspective you start out with space harrier style gameplay flying forward and blasting enemies eventually you'll get to the surface of a moon where you're taking out enemy defenses then you're back flying towards the ship that you need to enter while taking down even more enemies once you get inside that ship your craft morphs into a different type of vehicle this one can move in three dimensions and you can go anywhere you want in this level but what you need to do is take out the core and then select a warp gate then it's more of the same again and again but that's okay there's even a cool mech sequence where you're wandering around on the ground shooting stuff up overall the game is fairly nice but it's a tad too hard for its own good i think it's really easy to get hit the life bar does not work like a normal life bar it goes down and back up the manual doesn't explain it clearly but i think that if you take another hit while it's down then you lose power so to my knowledge you can take an unlimited amount of hits just as long as none of them are right after the other and that is almost impossible to do the controls are perfectly fine except in the 3d roaming sections turning your craft in these stages requires that you press diagonally up in the direction you want to turn and you turn slow if you want to move your ship up or down in these stages you need to do it while holding the c button now this is fine and all but with the relentless amount of enemies attacking you it can become kind of cumbersome the graphics are amazing core almost always did well on a sega cd in fact this game might push the system's limits more than any other game everything scales and lots of stuff rotates and it does it all really really well the synthesized orchestral music is pretty good and it helps make the game feel epic if you enjoy playing good games while being slightly frustrated but like to ooh and awe over the graphics then check this one out [Music] here's the terminator which is an entirely different game than the cartridge version i love to watch this movie a lot back in the day in this installment of the game you play as kyle reese the guy who was sent from the future to protect sarah connor it follows the movie fairly closely by showing cut scenes with short clips from the movie anyways the main draw is the gameplay itself this is all fine and it's actually pretty fun kyle controls very well for the most part the only problem i ever had was going down ladders but i didn't let it bother me and finally found the exact spot you need to be in you start out in the future where kyle is dressed in his uniform the action is solid the backgrounds look great and killing terminators feels really good eventually you'll be sent back in time and just like the movie you'll be wearing a trench coat and armed with a shotgun all the levels are pretty darn big and you'll be doing a bit of platforming going up and down and all around which is really fun if you want to you can explore a bit and find some hidden power ups like life grenades and even 1ups if you don't want to explore that's fine because there's lots of power-ups for you in plain sight but it's really worth it to explore because you'll be shot at a lot and finding life refills will help you survive i like that they went to the effort of completely remaking the game for the sega cd instead of just taking the cart version and adding fmv and music to it and of course i can't do a review without mentioning the music the soundtrack was composed by tommy talarico he's known for doing some great work and he doesn't fail here it's a truly great soundtrack worthy of a playlist in itunes even though it's completely different from the movie joe let me borrow this game for the review and i really had a great time playing it i don't think i want to give it back to him actually i'm pretty damn sure i won't find yourself an easy copy like i just did and there you go eight games so far but we've got a lot more to talk about yeah the eight games that we covered actually were really cool i liked a lot of those yeah you like snatchers especially snatcher yes natural is an awesome game yeah and like i said we've got a lot more to go so we're gonna shorten the length of our reviews by a little bit to get them all in there and well let's just get right back into it of course we gotta mention the working designs rpgs like lunar you play as alex on his quest to become a dragon master of course other incidents present themselves and they need solving by you the battle takes place with kind of a three-quarter side view very similar to final fantasy it works really well i like the style of battling the game is very responsive and fast unlike most rpgs it's definitely one to pick up if you can find it at a reasonable price [Music] lunar eternal blue was a sequel that takes place a thousand years later this time we're controlling hiro and he's off to unlock the secrets of the blue spire at least at first this game offered much improved cinematics and a lot more of them as well the speed which you wander around the overworld has been decreased but honestly it probably won't bother you you still wander around really fast indoors there's also a pay-to-save mechanic in here but honestly i've never even really noticed it as i played in my opinion this game is a lot better than the first and hardly anyone ever talks about vay or vi as the game calls itself you are prince sandor and you're getting hitched but then some mex attacks steal your bride and kill your parents now it's up to you to set things right vay seems very primitive compared to the lunar games it's not a bad game but the random battle encounters happen way too often the battles take place from a third person view they're pretty simple but they get the job done also the way the game ditches out experience points is inconsistent at best for example sometimes more powerful versions of enemies will give you less experience the graphics music and sound are all a bit below average still it's a pretty good game if you can put up with getting interrupted countless times and the other oddities [Music] devastator is a really fun mech game by wolf team we probably should have covered this in our mac episode it plays mainly as a platformer with a few shooter style levels thrown in to keep things interesting your met controls really well and can upgrade and change its weapons by collecting power-ups throughout each stage of course you can't get to the next stage without defeating a boss these battles usually aren't very tough but they're still entertaining every level is well designed looks good and is really fun to play to top it off this game has a really good soundtrack sadly this title only saw a release in japan for the mega cd it would have been a great original game for the us market there's even a version of cliffhanger on the system yeah [Applause] actually it's a fairly stiff beat-em-up that's not tremendously exciting in any way but what i want to show you is the sega cd exclusive snowboarding scenes this certainly isn't the bunny slope it has some awesome scaling and rotation but you won't get a chance to admire it at all you'll be far too busy dodging tons upon tons of obstacles your timing has to be exact and there's never a moment of rest it's very easy to run into something and if that's not enough you have an avalanche chasing you even rocks will jump off the hills just to attack you this game sucks echo the dolphin was also ported to the sega cd you play as echo and your dolphin pod and lots of other sea life was sucked up by a vortex you search the oceans finding a way to rescue your pot and return peace to the sea you swim the ocean using sonar to speak with other dolphins and whales you can speed bursts to eat fish and replenish lost health echo also breathes air so you got a surface from time to time to replenish your air gauge this isn't just a port of the genesis version this one has some redesign levels and best of all it has a new musical score by spencer nielsen it's a really great soundtrack that sounds new age and ambient there's also some educational fmv that'll tell you all about dolphins [Music] the sequel echo tides of time also got a release on this system as with the previous game little enhancements were made all throughout one cool feature i found are history glyphs that show cg cutscenes that tell the story from the first game they don't look very good today but back in 1994 this was something special it's a fun game with another great soundtrack by spencer nielsen there's also some cool teleportation stages where you swim through rings to go to distant waters these were fun levels trying to swim through the rings some of them are on top of the water which makes them really tough to jump through back in 1995 or so i bought both of these games on clothes at a toys r us for eight dollars each the thing is i didn't even own a sega cd at the time and had no intention of buying one either i bought these games specifically for the soundtrack and never regretted it i still listen to both of these from time to time as they're perfect for when you just want to chill out here's the sega cd version of three ninjas kick back the main part of this game is an average platformer that appeared on the genesis and super nintendo as well however the sega cd got two exclusive 3d levels using its special hardware scaling these stages are pretty cool i honestly don't know what they're doing in a game like this but they're a breath of fresh air after playing the platforming segments that's for sure it's just too bad that most people will shut the game off before ever even making it to these stages [Music] battlecore is a first person mech game by core pick one of three mechs with varying attributes to battle robots that have been infected by a virus and then take back your planet this is a slow moving game and the action never gets too frantic but keeps at a nice steady pace i really like how this game plays and the levels are all set up very well it will take a small amount of time to get used to how you control your mech but once you do you'll have a blast my only wish is that there would have been a jump button and a stray feature those would have been very helpful in a few areas of this game anyways there's lots of great weapons here that can do some nice damage all this in a nice jazzy soundtrack make for a great game check it out [Music] silfide is a vertical shooter from game arts well i guess technically it's a three-quarter shooter due to the angled view but it plays like a vertical shooter you fly over cool looking polygons and other effects while blasting tiny enemies and bosses i like how the voice proclaims that there's this huge craft approaching but this tiny little thing is what we get kind of reminds me of how dave talks to girls between stages you can choose which weapons you want attached to your ship the graphics are cool but unfortunately the game is mostly in space so that adds a lot of empty nothingness to the visuals the music is alright it's not bad it's a somewhat decent game for your sega cd android assault is a shooter by human entertainment i know this title screen says bar yarn but trust me the box says android assault and that's what it is i've got to admit that i really like this game it plays well enough like any shooter out there where you have a handful of different weapon types you can power up your ship to the point that it'll transform into a mech which is really cool the part that i like the most is being able to charge up your weapon as long as you aren't shooting you can charge up a bar at the top of the screen you then release it at any time for a much more powerful attack if at all possible it's best to let the bar charge up three times this is the most powerful attack and will even crush bosses quickly of course it's different depending on the weapon you have but i like this one the most your powered up attack releases a snake thing that'll go all over the screen and home in on enemies it's totally awesome this is a really fun game with great graphics and a better than average soundtrack get this one if you can [Music] the ninja warriors is a port of a mediocre arcade game by taito this version of the game never made it stateside you're a robot ninja and your mission is to assassinate the president and i am not kidding that is really what's going on here the soldiers are just doing their duty trying to stop you and you hack them up even patriotic dogs try to defend their country and you just slice them to death the graphics are pretty bland but the music is fairly good i could never figure out how to beat these stupid tanks this is by far the best port of the arcade on any platform but really who cares [Music] dungeon explorer is an overhead dungeon crawler and i'll bet you can guess where this game got its inspiration from yeah i thought it looked and played a lot like gauntlet 2. luckily i really like playing this game because you have to have a lot of patience in the beginning it's going to take a long time to level your character to where you can fight and don't have to do so much running away leveling up your character only gives them an hp boost to up your attack power and defense you need to buy armor and weapons i'm not used to this as normally when you level up everything gets a boost still it's enjoyable minus these few flaws and adds a bit of diversity to the system's library and despite the name being the same it's actually not the same game as the dungeon explorer on the turbo graphic 16. there's a few notable racing games on the sega cd the first of which is bc racers by core this one has chuck rock and the gang racing around in a cart style racer this game has appeared on several platforms but i feel that this is the best one since you can attack left and right instead of just to the right like in the other versions overall the presentation is pretty good if a bit underwhelming i'd say that this one is a good one for casual kart racing fans jaguar xj220 also by core is pretty cool or for you brits jaguar anyway you raced that sports car around a variety of different tracks in this early game the control is pretty good and the difficulty is just right the music is pretty laid back and it helps keep your nerves calm you can even build and save your own tracks i wonder if this game was sold at jaguar dealerships or if you got a free copy of this game if you bought one of their cars better damn well hope so those cars are not cheap anyway it doesn't look like much but it's fairly enjoyable formula one beyond the limit is an f1 racing game by sega of japan this one's a lot more technical than arcadey i'm generally not a fan of f1 and definitely not the games that go into full on simulation mode the control here takes a lot of getting used to in the graphics it could be a lot better i mean things have a hard time even staying on the screen you do get to race against real drivers of the time however i recommend playing pretty much anything else unless you're a hardcore f1 fan and while not exactly a racing game the adventures of batman and robin consists of only driving and flying sequences you try to catch up with the typical bad guys and avoid their weird traps there's also a timer which doesn't make things any easier this one also has an exclusive episode of the cartoon between the stages if you wanna see mr jay you gotta follow me this game is extremely hard to win at so don't say we didn't warn you [Music] [Applause] [Music] puffle mail is a platformer by falcom it says action rpg on the cover but i'm finding it hard to feel the rpg elements in this game well other than the earning money to buy stronger weapons in the stuff aspect and maybe the adding members to your party aspect okay okay i guess it's an action rpg sort of luckily for us in the us it was brought over by working designs and you know that they just can't leave this game alone they have to add their special touches to the game which they did just the facts man the platforming is really fun and the action isn't too bad either there's only a few enemies on screen at any given moment so you can pretty much take your time there's a lot of story here and the action will pause for you to listen to some decent voices so you can keep track of what's going on these can get old fast but fortunately you can just turn them off and speed through the text at your own pace the best feature of this game is that you can save anywhere you want when you die you can continue fairly close to where you saved with really nice graphics gameplay and a good soundtrack this is a great title for the sega cd let's play ball haha eye of the beholder is a game in the dungeons and dragons series in this one you create your party and start exploring underneath the city and then a beholder traps you in oh no it's a dungeon crawler 100 for sure in the tradition of might and magic and other games of that nature you roam around the dungeon find items open doors and fight enemies you even need to figure out how to disarm traps when you're worn down you can rest your party but it can actually take over a week or maybe even more to recover fully look at that the graphics are pretty choppy and they could have been animated much much smoother the music is great though as it was done by yuzo koshiro obviously this has been ported from a computer platform and the use of a mouse is highly advised playing with the master game is pretty fun but it can still get old pretty fast here's the ever popular sonic cd to me this game seems a bit harder than the other 16-bit games in the series it's not so difficult that it'll make you want to rage quit or anything but you might notice a bump in the difficulty as is usual with sonic games the action is fast and the levels are all big with multiple paths the ability to time travel is a cool aspect and adds some meat to the gameplay the graphics are all really nice and i like the backgrounds to the 3d style bonus stages and you're treated to a great cd soundtrack by spencer nilsson this game has some of the best music i've heard in a sonic game the euro and japanese versions have a different soundtrack which is also really good sonic cd is definitely a strong title for the systems library [Music] there are a couple of more cyberpunk digital comic games like rise of the dragon here in this one you play as blade hunter who starts out investigating the death of the mayor's daughter there's a very heavy interaction with items in this one you have to remember things like taking your id card with you wherever you go basically you move items over your little guy to make sure he has them honest person also be sure to save often as it's really easy to abruptly come to the end of your mission there's a few flaws here and there like being able to get permanently stuck but otherwise it's a great game you'd better have a darn good excuse for standing me up blade i'll forgive you this time blake there's also the space adventure cobra from hudson soft which will cost you nearly two hundred dollars more than rise of the dragon and this one you play is the perpetually cigar smoking cobra he's got a big price on his head and he starts out looking for a colleague of course he quickly runs into trouble everything in this game is menu driven by text it can get old fast but it's still a worthwhile game even though it's definitely not for everyone there's also some rather mature content in here well at least it was considered mature back when this game came out it's a good game but not quite worth the asking price forget everything you've seen here no problem pal i got a bad memory anyway lucky for you go home have your mother tuck you into bed ko flying squadron is a shooter developed and published by victor entertainment it's a very fun shooter that's in the cute um upside of the genre i think joe doesn't like the term kudema but whatever it fits i'm almost certain that i like these better than regular shooters i just love the wacky yarsels and hugely bright colors that this game and games like it have i mean just look at the q factor it's amazing your character controls really well if you don't shoot for a couple seconds you can get two options that'll make the game much easier and you can even use them as kamikaze weapons a nice soundtrack helps ran out this extraordinarily expensive yet solid title for the sega cds library robo-lsda is a fairly nice vertical shooter by compile it's supposedly the spiritual sequel to musha and you can see it in a lot of ways however the weapons aren't as interesting and neither is the setting the game is placed in which is feudal japan for some reason the graphics are kind of drab and not as inspired as moosh's backgrounds and enemies the music is pretty cool though with some nice techno tracks it can get really hard really fast if you die so be careful worth it if you can get it for a good price [Music] another game by compile is panic and this one is messed up basically there's a computer virus and that means that every single button in the entire world every single one is messed up you need to press buttons and work your way to the central computer to destroy the virus and restore order in the meantime however get ready for some absolutely insane crap what happens as a result usually makes no sense whatsoever absolutely none i got this game when it came out and there are still lots of buttons i haven't pressed yet now this game can be freaking hilarious but really only in short bursts [Music] batman returns is a horrible action game but it's a great driving game the action sequences are straight from the genesis release with new music and are average at best new to the cd version are the driving sequences these are all entertaining and have some great atmosphere the only problem is that they're not easy no sir not at all you'll be playing these sequences over and over again trying to figure out the pattern of each of the bosses the levels get much harder as you get further into the game it's all good though because as i said earlier it's really fun to play luckily for you you can turn off the action sequences and make this into just a driving game which is what the game should have been in the first place the game also has a better than average soundtrack with a few exceptional tunes by you guessed it spencer nilsson if you need a version of batman returns on the sega console get this one you can't talk about the sega cd and not mention road avenger this is the only fmv game that we'll mention in this episode but it's the best one ever made on any system it's full of action and it's hilarious it's also very very road warrior-ish i like to pretend that some awesome new game just came out and i'm racing to the store to pick it up and like always traffic stands out of my way so i've got to get creative with my shortcuts even traffic helicopters try to stop me from getting my game sorry about your accident man can't stick around i got places to be this is the only fmv game that you absolutely need [Music] and there you go that's a sega cd for you of course not every single game some of them i think i'll cover i'll wait till left in japan episode to cover because yeah kind of interesting but overall what do you think of the sega cd well actually i'm convinced i think it's actually a very good system i do i mean when i first went around and played it i wasn't too hip on it but now that i've played a lot of the better games for this system it's it's awesome it really is what do you guys think of the sega cd uh let us know and in the meantime thank you for watching game sack i don't even need to ask you because i turned on my tv stared right into the screen plugged in sega cd best games i'd ever seen welcome to the next level [Music] welcome to the next [Applause] [Music] all right dave you ready to do this sega cd episode are you feeling all right joe fine uh he you don't look good you look like you're uh you look like you're running about 12 frames per second there i'm fine dave see your voice is off too your voice quality's about 16 kilohertzers it's fine can we can we just do this this is a big episode all right no no i've seen this before you you've got fmv bullet don't you i do i do if it's the disease you get when you play too much sega cd it you just it just happens dave and you know what else it's contagious oh my god yeah you've got it too i've got fmv bullets and you know what the cure is to play super nintendo cd-rom and it doesn't exist oh my god what's nintendo gonna think i gotta get out of here [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to beard sack this time we're talking about the cdi yeah joe i am so excited for this stupid episode i've always wanted a cdi exactly yeah back when this thing was released i went to media play and i remember seeing this awesome freaking thing sitting on the shelf with the two zelda games and i was like oh my god i want one of these so bad but the price was through the roof yeah i remember seeing like a movie being played on it or something at media play yeah and you're like new technology but you know i don't you know still though why don't you tell us all about it because i still don't know after all these years 20 years yeah well okay here's a little bit about the cdi itself the cdi compact disc interactive phillips who is one of the designers of the original audio cd format designed and launched the cdi platform in late 1991. the original idea was to give consumers the brave new world of cd-rom technology and at 700 it was much lower in priced on a full-fledged personal computer many different models of the cdi were made most often by phillips and magnavox the unit could play cdi discs audio cds photo cds and also video cds with the optional digital video cartridge the system had a wide array of different controllers like this thing and also some more standard looking controllers a lot of educational and multimedia titles were produced but the system also featured its fair share of games it ran on a hybrid 16-32-bit 68070 cpu with 16.7 million colors one megabyte of ram and eight channels of sound mixed down to a stereo output what's interesting is that the cdi had a built-in battery chip to keep track of time and game saves and whatnot but when this battery dies the system can't even boot up so what you need to do is grind away the chip and solder a new battery to where the old one connected can you even imagine a company today designing something that won't even boot if the non-replaceable battery dies overall the cdi project was a huge financial loss for philips but ended up selling about 1 million units in seven years [Music] wow joe that was i really didn't learn anything yeah well you know anyway uh everyone knows about the cdi you know about the educational games and stuff but in this episode we thought we'd take a look at the actual legitimate games that the system has versus all the you know encyclopedia stuff and things like that and dave has got the first game and it's a big one it's one of the most popular games in the world yes so sit down hold tight here i go so tetris on the cdi should be pretty good right i'm a pretty big fan of tetris and this was one game that i was actually really looking forward to playing while i somewhat enjoyed playing it it does have its fair share of problems well i'm not sure if it's problems really more just my personal preferences maybe so the first problem i ran into is that there's only one game mode and it's a mode that i really don't like it's the type where after every 10 lines the action stops so it can tell you that you've completed a level i really hate the break in the action and is pointless to me just add an extra spot by your score that lets you know what level you're on this version control is okay it seems to lag a bit after pushing a button and this is problematic when action gets fast one other control issue i don't like is that you're only able to rotate your tetronomos in one direction i was able to get used to it but i do like being able to rotate them in both directions but the game does have some nice photorealistic backgrounds that change with each new level these are nice to look at and i even recognize a few of the views here the music is actually pretty good well that's if you like new age music it kind of has that yawning feel to it i used to like yani for some stupid reason but you know i don't care for his music anymore but the music here is actually nice and relaxing the problem is that you're only going to hear half of each song because the game stops to advance your levels way too often overall i guess i recommend it because it is tetris [Music] hotel mario might actually be one of the better games on the cdi that's right it's actually kind of enjoyable basically the princess has been kidnapped as per usual and she's hidden in one of bowser's dastardly hotels yeah i guess he got sick of castles and now he's into hotels anyway the game is kind of confusing to play at first if you need instructions on how to get through the hotels check out the enclosed instruction book oh thanks mario i guess your job is to close all the doors on any given screen yep that's it that's all you need to do but in order to do that you'll need to avoid getting hit by the bad guys you can go up and down through one-way elevators what kind of hotel has a bunch of one-way elevators anyway you just work your way through the screen close doors and complete the level why does mario need to close the doors anyway i don't really understand this but it works as a game so whatever you can collect coins and other items along the way you have a jump button as well as a close the damn door button sometimes after you've closed the door an enemy will open it up again to come out of it these enemies are truly evil and they must be destroyed you press up to enter a door you can hide in open doors to avoid enemies which are content just to patrol back and forth all day or you can hop on them to kill them the control isn't super responsive but it's wicked fast for a cdi game let me tell you you'll still end up dying a lot the music changes a little here and there but it's still very repetitive overall you can certainly do worse on the cdi [Music] pack panic here is another puzzler and it's definitely one of the best games for the system this is known as pack attack on the other systems like super nintendo this is one fun game and it mixes elements from tetris to end of course pac-man to play you arrange blocks and ghosts on the screen try to arrange the ghost so that they'll all meet eventually pac-man will come down in one of the bundles and all of the ghosts will turn blue as you know when the ghosts are blue pac-man will eat them if you have all the ghosts lined up nicely you can earn some big points here the wooden crates will disappear if you complete a line across the screen like in tetris the graphics are really nice and the music is good enough this is a standout title on the systems library that was only released in europe burn cycle is a special kind of awful actually believe it or not this is supposed to be the killer app for the cdi this is one of those point-and-click games with slow full motion video graphics in them you're inside someplace and you need to get out because you just stole a whole bunch of sweet ass data that that i must have packeted i i got a sudden song during your daring escape you shoot enemies down via your aiming reticle if you die that's it game over yep you only have a single life along the way your team member keeps bugging you again and again she's not long for this world however she quickly gets shot down by an unseen enemy but be sure to molest your corpse a little bit before you move on then you get into the burn cycle and you have to fumble through turning it on and selecting a destination after you figure all that out and you're finally flying then you got to shoot down these space boogers who keep coming at you if one of them hits you you guessed it game over good i don't want to play anymore anyway i really don't think that this is the game that you want representing an entire platform [Music] this is zenith i really don't know how to categorize this game so i won't even try you control a bouncing ball and you must earn points by landing on these red circle things and then find the end of the level the ball bounces automatically on its own so all you have to worry about is controlling the ball's direction and where it'll bounce there's multiple ways you can die or lose your ball if you aren't careful so watch out for things like this acid here yeah i know it doesn't look like acid it can be challenging at times trying to get your ball into the goal but it's not horribly difficult the difficult part of this game is trying not to turn it off in the first 20 minutes of play i don't know what it is but this game does absolutely nothing for me i found the background graphics to be totally repetitive i guess it's cool that the graphics are 3d ish but that's really all it has going for it the lack of any music at all is pretty annoying if there was some good music the game would at least seem better i honestly found no enjoyment playing this title it's just not for me [Music] the apprentice is one of the very few platformers on the system you hop or even swim around the vertically scrolling levels avoiding things like enemies and drips from the ceiling because of course one drop will kill you in fact touch anything bad once and you'll die you can collect a little fly or maybe it's a ferry but it'll enable you to take an additional hit sometimes you'll need keys to unlock doors to keep going the game is responsive and that's actually somewhat fun it's got that crazy european platformer feel unfortunately it's really not very well designed but the graphics are damn good for the system and even the scrolling is smooth which kind of surprises me in the past i always felt that this console as well as the 3do were designed with scrolling being an afterthought the music isn't half bad either it's a tough game but i did find myself wanting to keep trying to see how far i could get if you like challenging euro platformers then check this one out here's link the faces of evil and zelda the wand of gamelon in faces of evil you play as link whereas in the wand of gamelon you play as zelda herself both of these games were released on the same day i remember seeing pictures of these games back in the early 90s and thinking how great they looked but pictures only show one aspect of a game and while they look good the actual games themselves are another story these titles are just a good example of really poor game design and execution i like the idea of a side-scrolling zelda adventure and in the right hands like miyamoto's these games could really be good sadly everything about them is just bad the stories are told with animated sequences and the art style is just so ugly there's nothing appealing about link zelda or any of the other characters here and the voice acting is atrocious and this is coming from someone who has no skill whatsoever a whole month gone and still no word i'm certain he's all right yeah that old ganon's no match for the king both link and zelda control poorly they move sluggishly and you have to press up to jump in in a platformer that's always a bad idea swinging your sword is easy enough but having no upward thrust makes killing flying enemies really tough as i'm playing these titles i never really feel that i'm doing anything in them except for harvesting rubies from enemies so i can buy stuff in the shop and yes the money here is actually rubies as you can see here in the original legend of zelda manual somewhere along the line nintendo must have changed it to rupees you'll be visiting that shop a lot since everything you use has limited quantities like if you buy a rope you'd think you'd be able to use it whenever you want and as many times as you want oh no not in these games you can only use items you buy three times and then they're gone there's just too much pointless grinding in here to get the things that you need plus to pick up rubies from fallen enemies you need to stab at them why can't i just walk over them like in real video games thank god nintendo didn't let the developers use any of the zelda music here as i'm sure it would have been really jacked up i don't like these games but i do wonder if there is anyone out there that actually does [Music] tetsuo gaiden is a shooter that kind of reminds me of what galaga would be like if it were horrible you start as a fun little spaceship you move back and forth but you also have a small amount of vertical movement you can do the goal is to shoot down each enemy group as they appear on screen if you get them all your score increases score increase if any of them escape before you shoot them your score goes down screw the score i'm just trying to save the known universe now where's my galactic dancing there's the occasional power-up that floats by but you'll probably end up shooting it by accident even if you don't they can be tough to grab thanks to their sporadic movement the backgrounds are a rather boring fmv stream but there's also a classic mode which gives you boring 2d scrolling backgrounds that never seem to change what's funny is that the fmv streamed graphics are called future mode so i guess this is supposed to be the future of video games right here i don't think video games would be around anymore if this ended up being their future at least the music is pretty cool though the sound effects seem like they're lifted straight from galaga and that really makes me yearn for some better gameplay the game can't even pronounce its own name right in their defense when this game was made i pronounced it gaiden myself so whatever the biggest problem with this game is that the enemy shots are so tiny that it's really tough to see them this is a fun one for 10 or maybe 15 minutes if you really want to push it now if you'll excuse me i'm going to go play some galaga 90 on my turbo graphics [Music] 16. score decrease [Music] two years after the previous cdi zelda games zelda's adventure was released have you ever wondered what it'd be like to play the original zelda with digitized people i haven't either but the developers at varieties sure did ferritus sounds like an ailment my veritas is acting up the good thing is that the game does try to play like the original game and it does that pretty well that's pretty much it for what this game does right let's see what it does wrong first of all the game uses two buttons one is your action button and the other opens up the menu screen since there's only one action button you can only have one thing equipped at a time so for example say you have your weapon equipped and you want to buy something from a shop you have to open up the menu and equip the ruby icon back out of the menu and then hit the action button to use rubies to pay for your item then go back in and equip your weapon again this is horribly annoying then there's the world zelda travels in it actually doesn't look bad and i could get used to the graphics but the thing i don't like is that there's a lot of areas that can hide enemies rubies or hearts going from screen to screen has a slight load which can get rather irritating the digitized people are horrifying to look at most of the time you can't make out that they're even human until you talk to them look at the bartender in the tavern here is he wearing a baseball hat i think he is of course i don't have to mention the quality of the voice acting as i'm sure you already know is horrible i'm so exhausted from my travels if only i'd known to cross the chasm riff with the ladder it would have saved me months and what is that music that's playing it sounds like it should be in a western movie and not a freaking zelda game that's just about the only music you'll hear anyways as there just isn't anything else except the sound of wind blowing or is that the game blowing if you're a fan of the zelda universe like i am then this game and the other two come off as very hear me offensive trust no one with hair don't even trust me i've stolen one of your lives all right dave we're about halfway done what do you think you liking it um not as much as i was wanting to like it you know i i like tetris but well maybe these games that we've got coming up will change your mind god i hope so cause i'm not really impressed so far okay let's get back into it [Music] kingdom the far reaches is an interesting one this one requires the digital video cartridge as the entire game is full of hastily drawn cartoon videos you play as lathan and you're trying to restore an amulet that's been scattered all around the kingdom before the evil turlock destroys everything you know and love basically what you do is choose where you go and if you can what to do when you get there if you choose poorly then you meet a wretched death think of it kind of like a point-and-click dragon's lair you'll die a lot trying to figure out the best path but you will eventually figure out the correct order in which you need to proceed for example you need to cure this blind beggar here before you go to talk to these guys try to go to these guys without curing the beggar first and well like i said it's an interesting game but once you figure things out there really isn't much replayability jeez there's also a sequel called kingdom shedown in this one you still play as lathan only several years older you need to collect the last two pieces of the amulet that you were trying to collect in the first game this one is more the same basically except it seems a lot more tame your death scenes are pretty lame just floating away or even falling asleep but the map is still pretty big so it may take you a bit to figure out what you need to do all in all i think i prefer the first one because the destinies were a lot better tell us the secret you know old man i know you'll look and smell like a baboon but that's no secret thanks i needed that [Music] thanks for trying kid but you better leave before you become a porcupine micro machines made an appearance on the cdi this should make everybody happy because who doesn't like a micro machines game i always like the idea of racing tiny cars on human sized surroundings like a billiards table or a workbench or even a kitchen table not only are there cars and trucks to race but you can even race a boat around the bathtub avoiding rubber ducks as with all other versions of the game this one is pretty fun to play it's fairly responsive even with the cdi's less than stellar controller there's tons of races here which is a good thing the bad thing is that you're stuck racing with the ugly yellow vehicle it would have been nice to be able to choose the color of your car the game looks pretty and all the tracks look good but the downside here is that the game is kind of choppy and slow compare it to the nes and genesis versions here and you can clearly see how the cdi version runs in comparison this doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me but there you have it and my last complaint is that there's no save feature so you'll have to start from the beginning every time but that might be alright because the game does have a good soundtrack unfortunately though it's all in mono it's not high quality stuff but it's far from unenjoyable if i ever decided to get a cdi then this game would be in my collection for sure solar crusade by infograms is an fmv crosshair shooter that requires the digital video cartridge basically you thought you've killed all of the aliens but you find a ship and it turns out that you haven't killed all the aliens so now you need to go kill the rest of the aliens there's only enough room for one species in this universe and that's gonna be humans basically the game goes wherever the video stream takes it and you move your crosshair around and shoot things you can switch between various weapons and all of them have a very limited capacity who thought it would be a good idea to limit the amount of your shots in a crosshair shooter anyway the stage keeps looping over and over again so i must not be shooting something that i'm supposed to the game could certainly be more clear about its objectives this is like a laser active game only much worse if you can actually believe that escape from cyber city is a shooter game that plays like you're watching an anime movie you have a crosshair on screen that you can move all around and shoot enemies and use it to dodge obstacles the game plays like a choose your own adventure book at the beginning of each scene you can choose to take the left or right path it's all done while looking at nicely drawn anime playing the game with the standard controller is horrible there are two main problems that i can see firstly you have just a split second to train your crosshairs on whatever needs to be shot secondly controlling the crosshair is cumbersome and very inaccurate these two things don't mix so it makes the game nearly impossible i played this game through at least 20 tries and i was barely able to get past the first handful of screens and this was on the easiest setting i wish we had the mouse because then i think we would be able to make some real progress in this game since i don't have access to the mouse i guess i won't be escaping from cyber city [Music] cather is another wonderful game from infogrames this one doesn't need a digital video cartridge surprisingly you start out by waking up from hibernation and piloting a ship yup that's it you can't even shoot your job is simply to avoid getting hit but if you do get hit you can always grab these green things to replenish your shield you arrive at your destination and are presented with a simple tile matching puzzle oh this is fun tell me again why the cdi didn't set the world on fire anyway i guess i didn't solve it in few enough moves or maybe i won i have no clue because now i'm flying my ship around strange places again at least i'm flying somewhere different okay i'm here anyone have puzzles for me to do all right this one's like the classic game simon i wonder what happens if i miss a note in the sequence what now i'm in a first person dungeon for no reason whatsoever with demons attacking me just for missing a note this never happened when i played simon as a kid i recommend that you stay away from kether here as it really doesn't have anything exciting to offer mutant rampage body slam is definitely one of the better games to come out for the cdi but just because it's one of the better games for the system doesn't necessarily mean that it's a great game well here's my two cents and then you can decide so as you can see it's a beat em up there's a very uninteresting storyline that's set in the future it's about how humans are inferior to the rest of the mutants who have taken over the world you take control of three humans to show that your race matters or some nonsense like that it's all done through low quality animated cutscenes anyway the game itself is actually kind of fun to play your character controls pretty well though he or she doesn't have much in the way of moves but you have your punch kick and a special move that of course takes away from your life bar at certain points during each level you can switch between the three characters which i actually thought was a nice feature there's a lot of enemies to fight in this game and as usual with beat em ups there's not a lot of variety in these enemies the good thing is that each area mostly has its own specific enemies so you won't see any of these ugly ninja things from the china area in the la area and so forth but there are a couple of enemies here and there that show up in multiple areas all of the levels are full of color with decent looking backgrounds weapons can be picked up as well as one ups and food to replenish your life you can even punch this guy's head off and then pick up the head to attack other enemies with it that's pretty cool the only bad thing is that the way the enemies battle seems to be unpolished a lot of the time you'll have to chase your enemies around the screen just so you can fight them the music is there but not really notable joe says he kinda likes it but i don't know it just didn't do much for me this would be just an average brawler on another system but for the cdi it's one of its shining stars [Music] thunder and paradise interactive is based on an old tv show with hulk hogan that ran for an entire season it's about two ex-navy seals who are mercenaries for hire unfortunately you don't get to play as hulk hogan instead you play as the kid who lives down the block that you never talk to you can choose to watch the show without playing the game portions or even play the game parts without any of the story getting in the way or there's the interactive television mode where you get everything rock and roll buddy anyway that kid from down the block that you never talked to can jack into the boat and control the guns you can face all four directions and there's always a ton of stuff coming at you at once this part really sucks this isn't a video game zack around here game over has a whole other meme okay okay not a video game this is interactive television got it this part goes on way too long and it's pretty tough to hit things with your crosshair hey man this ain't no video arcade hit something why is this game putting so much effort into telling me that it's not a game anyway you get past that and now you're roaming around outside every time you come to a standstill enemies attack and you can shoot them back it's awfully nice of the bad guys not to attack until you're completely still the future of video games is awesome it can still be hard to hit people with a crosshair the bad guys man shoot the bad guys you ain't wimping out on me are you hey come on i'm trying man leave me alone anyway you can also play this game with a light gun but i don't have one to try but it's got to be better than this maybe i didn't make myself clear you're supposed to hit the bad guys well brother i could if you program this game a little better but even if you die the game still moves on to the next area you'll never get to me never was that razor ramon and snake pliskin's love child for real obviously as you've guessed this one definitely requires a digital video cartridge as a game there's not much here and there's a show there obviously wasn't much there either i'm really disappointed [Music] dq buddy here's the mighty atlantis the last resort this is the only first person shooter on the system it really isn't anything great and in fact is fairly bland there's not a lot of variety in the graphics and you'll be fighting the same enemies a lot the levels are all fairly basic and have no real atmosphere to them does the look of this enhance your experience not mine the game's engine seems to work fine and it plays well enough it's just that there isn't anything exciting going on here to keep you interested look at this level all the walls and water reflections look exactly the same it's very easy to get lost in here you do have a map but come on you have no way to look up or down and you can't strafe so this really is as basic as it gets there's just way too much repetition from the level backgrounds to the music and oh god does this music suck i would steer clear of this game if it was something that you were interested in [Music] we were going to take a good look at the seventh guest this is a highly regarded game that appeared on a bunch of different platforms basically a crazy guy builds a weird house invites six people and says that one of the guests hasn't arrived yet you wander throughout the house and creepy stuff happens i guess it's supposed to be creepy i mean it's not scary at all because i know the house is brand new older houses are much more creepy there's puzzles in the game to figure out but unfortunately the game crashes whenever a puzzle starts this is a known issue with early versions of the game running on certain models of cdi hardware so right here is as far as i could get it has good music and smooth video but it wasn't even slightly creepy at least not as far as i played and that is the cdi for yeah well at least mostly we didn't cover every game but dave what are your opinions of the cdi they're not positive as you've heard from the most of the games that i've talked about um i just don't see it i firstly what is it with stuff with interactive in the title like 3do interactive and cd interactive does that mean you can automatically charge an extra 300 for your system i guess so i mean god and then of course the games are just not fun not really i mean there are a few in there that aren't bad they're not bad but you know it's a cdi that same game on say the sega saturn it would be a horrible game i agree or the sega genesis or the super nintendo or whatever exactly it's just it just didn't really live up the cdi didn't really know what it wanted to be i don't think and no matter what it tried to be it didn't do what it tried to be very well right you know and i don't know if some of you collect this thing out there and you actually like it good for you i'm not going to hate on you because that's something you like yeah but this is just not for me i have no interest in mine yeah anyway what are your favorite games for the cdi or do you even have any i want one yeah anyway let us know what you think of the system and in the meantime thank you for watching game sack [Music] what's up joe oh hi dave look i've got the super nintendo it's a video game system with many great games to play [Music] what what is this dude i mean there's no edutainment there's no value you're writing your brain there's no education here this is just garbage it does nothing for you i don't why are you still playing this [Music] so what joe you brought me over to look at another brain riding game system with fun games on it oh hi dave witness the cdi the compact disc interactive now this is a real super entertainment system with the cdi system you can learn and become a productive member of society there's no rotting of the mind here titles like compton's interactive encyclopedia bring out the maximum potential of the human mind through learning and if you must have fun there's always titles like textiles jigsaw and treasures of the smithsonian this is truly a great system and the only one needed by youth and adults joe you are a great friend here is my only copy of twinkle tale and i want you to have it
