Game Sack is one of my favorite YouTube series. Joe is just informative and technical enough to be interesting, while also often adding personal commentary that makes it feel authentic.

I look forward to each episode. P.S. Dave is missed. That guy added another element to every episode he was a part of. I often identified with his observations.

Thank you for all the content.

I miss Dave and would be really happy to see him come back even if it's just occasionally, but I have to admit that Joe is doing a great job keeping the show going solo.

[Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to this week's episode of game sack and this week we're gonna dedicate the entire episode to the NEC turbo graphics 16 game system it is a fantastic little thing and it's underrated and overlooked both in his time and these days it deserves much more attention than it gets yeah you got that right this thing is awesome and I dare you to go down to your local game store and try to find one of these things it is damn near impossible I've been looking for years just to see if I could find one and I would even know because I've also worked at a game store too so let's take a closer look at this thing the turbografx-16 was designed around a similar CPU as the one inside the NES only much more powerful many people write the system off as a bit but really it was part of the 16-bit generation the played games on credit card sized cue cards which were called turbo chips in the US but I'll always prefer calling them view cards the biggest two card game was Street Fighter two champion Edition which came with 20 mega power but unfortunately was never released in the u.s. speaking of Japanese games you'll need a converter like this one to play them on your us system or you'll need to get your system modified unfortunately the converters are not cheap these days that's why many people buy japanese systems like the core graphics as they are very easy and cheap to obtain and support with games the turbo is also the first home video game console to have a cd-rom add-on and it was quite ahead of its time for the day it attached to the system from behind and also offered composite video outputs and direct stereo audio out this didn't add any horsepower to the turbo graphics system itself of it in the CD audio and lots and lots of storage space in Japan most games ended up being released on CD and you also some of the best games on CD in the US as well in late 1992 the turbo was redesigned and relaunched under a new banner called turbo technologies which released what we know as the turbo duo an all-in-one unit that combined hue card CD and super CD super CDs require more RAM than the older CD games and the duo had to just built-in if you wanted to play super CDs on the old turbo graphic CD you needed a super system card which turbo technologies also released making the old system every bit as powerful as the new the duo is probably the best way to get into turbo graphics games as you won't need to hunt down appropriate system cards to play most games Japanese duo's tend to be a bit cheaper and unlike the hew cards CD games have no reagent protection Japanese games are also a bit cheaper so you might as well buy lots of Japanese hue card games as well there was also an upgrade released only in Japan called the arcade card which allowed for a teen magazine Ram which was amazing for the time not many games were released to be used with this card but those that were were pretty impressive there were some pretty cool ports of NeoGeo fighting games and a cool shooter called Ginga UK Densetsu sapphire just rolls off the tongue doesn't it [Music] all right that's pretty cool the system was pretty juicy for its time I think but what good is a game system without good games that's true it all boils down to the games upper available for the system and there were tons of great ones and we can't cover them all here there's just no way so why don't we just take something that we feel everyone should take a closer look at because there are really good games fact why don't you go first and tell them what people should look at okay whether house is a side-scrolling action game with seven levels the story surrounds the west mansion where dr. WestEd all his experiments and created deformed beans and monsters plane each stage the controls in this game are great for the most part and it's easy to get used to the floaty feel of the main character the levels autoscroll and our average link with some of them having branching paths all are quite colorful and have detailed backgrounds the music is great for the game in some of the tracks you might want to listen to on your mp3 player while waiting for the bus sound effects are nice and creepy and round out the nice horror feel of this game [Music] military madness is a sci-fi themed xMAP turn-based strategy game the game takes place on the moon in a not so distant future the typical strategy game where you have different types of units that have different strengths and weaknesses each unit can move a certain number of spaces and if in range can attack their enemy battles take place during a cutscene which shows how each side fares terrain will take effect on how well your battle will come out if you are on a hill for example you will be much stronger than if you are fighting on level ground because of the altitude advantage this game is really awesome because it's not overly difficult and you don't have to worry about 5 bazillion things before you finish a turn just good ol mind-numbing gaming at its finest music is fairly elect Lester and you won't be humming any of these tunes as you put your grandmother's grass Dracula X's Castlevania at its finest set in 1792 you play as Richter Belmont and just like every Castlevania game up to this point your object is to kill Dracula and get your woman back before she gets the neck kiss of death a side-scrolling level based game my favorite type of Castlevania where you fight a boss at the end of each stage a great feature in this game is branching paths for example as you are fighting your way through a level and you get knocked off a ledge you think you are dead right wrong you fall off to a different path which could actually lead you to a different boss the controls in this game couldn't be any better and the color palette is perfect and highlights the gloomy mood anime cutscenes with a voice and by far one of the best video game soundtracks ever recorded this game is fairly rare and is in demand always which drives the price up to the $100 range on eBay in my opinion is worth every penny truly the perfect Castlevania games magical chase is a side-scrolling shooter game also known as a queue demo there are a total of six levels in the game which can be played on the normal and hard difficulty settings only the first three can be played on the easy difficulty setting as enemies are destroyed delete different colored gemstones which serve as your game's currency twice during each level a balloon appears where power-ups health and extra lifes can be purchased the control on this game is quite good you have two stars that follow you like options from Gradius these can be directed to fire in one direction or fire in the opposite direction of your last d-pad movement the stages are all fairly long with mid bosses and are beyond colorful backgrounds are decently detailed and the music fits the game nicely the soundtrack on his own has a few good Tunes but nothing you wouldn't want to listen to to cover up your girlfriend's never-ceasing talk the game is quite rare in the USA as it came out very late in the system's life and an auction can fetch upwards of $1,500 per game in manual only the Japanese version can fetch close to $200 as it is more common is it worth it I don't think so star parodia is a vertical scrolling shoot-'em-up or another khuddam up it is a parody of the star soldier series similar to Konami's parodia series and was originally only released in Japan the game comes on a CD and has some decent music and sound effects I like parts of this soundtrack but not so much the others at the beginning you can choose from one of three characters Bomberman which his power ups will look like they do in Bomberman games secondly is Paris Caesar which is from Star Soldier I imagine his Paris resemble star soldier finally is a PC engine yep you fight as a small game system his pair ups will look like heyou cards each has three different types of weapons in super bomb a great game and very fun to play I would recommend this game to anybody even Michelle Obama [Music] alright Joe those are the games that I think people should take a look at oh yeah those are some pretty good game Thanks what do you have well I've got some good games that everyone should look at some of them are popular some of them aren't so popular but everyone should take a closer look at these games first up is legendary axe it's an early hack and slash game with very precise jumping controls it's a really tough game and I usually turn it off when I die due to everything you have earned up to the point of your death being taken away but that doesn't mean I don't have tons of fun getting up to the point where I die I often pull this one down from the shelf for a quick play there is also a sequel called legendary ax 2 that is completely unrelated to this game but I feel it is even better than part 1 it's a bit more floaty much darker and more somber but this game goes balls out in the action Department of features big bosses and really fun stages if you beat the game the ending is not exactly what you'd expect from a game like this [Music] next up is our type an arcade shooter from the late 80s in fact this is one of my favorite versions of our type I like it even more than the arcade version due to the far superior sound and music sure it doesn't feature all of the parallax scrolling that the arcade did but I can live without it this is another game where I play until I die for the first time and then I turn it off I can usually make it to about Stage five or so definitely one of the more creative shooters of its time pick it up [Music] [Applause] [Music] one of the games that really sold me on how awesome this system is was these book 1 & 2 I was blown away by this when my friend bought the $400 cd-rom attachment for his turbo graphics 16 back in high school it uses professional voice actors some of which are from TV shows and movies such as Michael Bell and Thomas Haden Church oh you are brave you are also a fool these three Wanderers for me is was a departure as it went to a side view with more of an emphasis on action rather choppy action at that but it was still really fun and had great music but the voice acting was it was just awful both you and demonicus are living beings with emotions and feelings why yz4 was never released outside of Japan unfortunately it begins by showing the events at the end of East - which is completely awesome then a doll goes out on his own seeking new adventures this game returns to the top-down perspective and as always the music is amazing [Music] Gate of Thunder was the shooter that debuted with the turbo duo in the US it's definitely one of the better shooters of its day and offers a fairly robust challenge and phenomenal music one thing about this game that still blows me away is how short the loading times are the programmers did an amazing job disguising them there was a spiritual sequel to this game called mord's of thunder that was pretty cool and much easier it also comes highly recommended but I think in the end I prefer gate of thunder over this finally we have JB Herold Murder Club which got severely overlooked because it came out at almost the same time as Sherlock Holmes consulting detective which was the first console game with full motion video young good chap JB Herold only features digitized stills but it is the far better game you go around on a graphical text adventure trying to find clues to a murder the story is very well done and you can listen to the voices and Japanese women to seduce what they look like you guys they're not so big I do my stuff or you can switch them to English finish my shift at 8 o'clock game clothes and went home every line of dialogue in the game is voiced in both languages you'll spend a lot of time with this one trying to crack the case very dated but it's still really one of my favorites check it out as you can see the turbo graphics is a great system and the games that came out for it are just plain awesome there's too much to talk about in one episode and not even 5 episodes we could fit everything in that we'd like to say but I suggest to you that you go and try and find a system which is sadly gonna be on eBay or you can just go the easy way and download them on the Virtual Console for the Wii service don't write the turbo graphics 16 off I mean just because it wasn't popular or didn't sell well doesn't mean it doesn't have tons of great fantastic games go try it now now well you can wait till later [Music] [Applause] [Music] right crippled graphics magical dinosaur tour I can't beat the last boss on that I better call the hint line and get some help there's that phone number here it is the number you dialed it's not a working number please check the number and dial again out of service why the hell would this be out of service [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to game sack this is the turbo graphics 16 part 2 in fact part 1 was six years ago six years ago six very long years I've actually been wanting to do another turbo graphics episode because it has been longing of course we can't put some games here and there but nothing completely dedicated to the system like this one today but as we did in that first one Joe did an overview of the system we're gonna have you do that again but this time I imagine you're gonna want to open the thing up what you didn't do that and the first time that's true let's check it out [Music] you may know the turbo by several different names the turbo graphics 16 the PC engine or even the turbo duo released in Japan in 1987 it was designed to compete with the Nintendo Famicom but when it was released in the US and 1989 it was shoved into the 16-bit era competing directly with the Genesis and eventually the Super Nintendo the system was versatile enough to compete in both generations with an 8-bit hue see 60 to 80 cpu running at 7.16 megahertz a 16-bit graphics processor and six channel stereo sound it was also the very first video game console to feature a cd-rom peripheral there was also the super graphics an upgraded version of the PC engine with four times the memory and a second graphics chip this console only received five exclusive releases but it could play every single PC engine game all in all nearly 700 games were released for the PC engine and the turbo graphics but only 138 of these ever came out in North America in Japan the system outsold both the Nintendo Famicom and the Sega Megadrive for a time but sadly it never gained much of a foothold in the West [Music] alright Joe another great overview as usual and thank you all right I'm not done yet anyways a lot of people probably like that just as much as I did but let's get right to the games because that's what you're here for right indeed the game [Applause] [Music] here's Tiger Road originally from Capcom imported to the console by Victor musical industries in this side-scrolling action platformer you take control of Lee Wong from the Olin temple as Lee Wong was travelling his temple was ruining the sacred Scrolls were taken you must now fight to regain these sacred scroll so you can use the double-headed Tiger fighting technique this is a fun part of the arcade game but it can be frustrating at times your character controls well but your enemies will piss you off they like to jump and attack you and mostly try to land on your head it seems this wouldn't be a problem if you could just attack upwards you have three weapons that you can collect throughout the game and only the axioms the land hits on enemies coming from above the ball and chain is a good weapon in fun to use the sword on the other hand is the worst and you'll feel like you're handicapped when you're using it so I suggest just avoiding it besides the platforming stages there are others where you float upwards avoiding enemies or spikes to get to the exit even get a fight a boss while floating around and that's cool the boss has an easy pattern but be careful because he deals mega damage and takes half of your life bar with one hit there's tons of stuff to collect in this game from power-ups to extra points to bottles that replenish your life the developers thought it would be pretty funny to add these yellow bottles that'll drain your life but after you collect them a few times you'll pretty much learn to avoid them overall it's a good game with solid action and decent music [Music] this is samurai ghost from Namco released in 1992 you take control of the undead samurai kikuchiyo who's risen from the dead to defeat his old enemies which of course saves the earth from invading spirits I really do like the art style of this game with skeletons skulls and death everywhere I like in certain levels where the Sun and the moon rise in the background I died a few times in the stage and the Sun in the mood were different every time that's cool at first glance your character looks like he's a marionette like Ernest Evans by the way he moves luckily he doesn't control that way and to be honest the control is pretty good the sword takes a bit of getting used to with its stiff motions but once you get the feel for it you won't have many issues the difficulty level is up there mainly because they throw a lot at you but of course once you start to learn the level it gets easier you can also collect weapon power-ups like a projectile or a stronger sword / but these right now quickly it would have been nice if they just last a little bit longer with good artwork lots of parallax scrolling and a worthy soundtrack samurai ghost is a nice game for your collection [Music] we got to mention bonks adventure right he was originally intended to be the mascot for the system but found his way out to other consoles as well you smash your enemies with your head but that's not the only thing that you can use your head for you can bounce on these colored florets which give you fruit for points and health and even meat eat enough meat and you get super pissed off and rage attack all of your enemies for a limited amount of time you can even flip through the air if you turn on the turbo switches on your controller and bypass nearly half of the stages most of the stages are actually pretty long I really like the colorful cartoon style graphics the bosses all look especially coolness really fun to fight them I also really dig the music overall it's a pretty damn good game the next year we got bonks revenge and it was mostly more of the same the stages are all new and everything is very lively and colorful but there's now an occasional mid boss and some tougher enemies to fight throughout the stages funk also has a couple of new abilities like being able to breathe fire when he's powered up on meat and now it's a bit harder to bypass the stages by floating across them but most stages weren't designed to be wide open enough to do that anyway it feels like they took a little bit more time planning the stages of this one out the graphics have improved quite a lot and helped make the world feel much more lively not only that but the music has really improved too [Music] and nearly two years later we got bonk three-box big adventure again it's mostly more of the same the gimmick with this one though is that if you eat a piece of blue candy you grow into a huge ass bonk and you can really cause some damage or if you eat the red candy you shrink into tiny bonk and you're able to gain access to new areas these are kind of fun and do add a bit of freshness to the series the graphics really haven't improved but the music is completely different this time and it's still fairly good there is also a CD version of this game released believe it or not besides the music this is actually the inferior version of the game when your giant bonk there's far less animation on the CD version and sadly the U card and the CD are both crazy expensive these days with a CD over $300 and Hugh Card even more than that Japanese versions cheaper though but be careful because there is a repro version of the CD and people even like to sell that for high prices online for me the first two games are my favorite with the original holding a special soft spot but the second one is probably the best playing and best design Bob game on the system but no matter which one you go with you're gonna get a good game [Music] here's gum Ola speed by eupl released in 1990 only in Japan in this action puzzle style game you must collect the body parts of your snake once you do this then you enclose your body around these orange things which are food and when you've done that the exit opens up and off you go to the next level it's actually a bit tougher than that when enemies are thrown into the mix if they touch your body segments will fall off and you have to collect them again if they touch your head then well of course that means you're dead so don't do that because it's not good for you okay your character controls very well considering all you have is the d-pad if you had an analog stick I think it would make the action a bit more enjoyable I'm surprised this hasn't been remade for a current system that supports analog control spending five minutes with this game will get you hooked and you'll want to keep playing to see the next board plus the music is actually pretty good not every track is amazing but it really goes well with a game play so if you can play Japanese Hue cards in it's worth a purchase [Music] let's take a look at a few more japan-only games this is Allison Wonder dream a pretty solid action platformer that was released in 1990 by face it's a good-looking game as very colorful Alice has a couple methods of attack firstly she can yell at her enemies and it works pretty well except that you can only have one yell on screen at a time but you can charge up that yell for a more powerful shot she can also jump on her enemies just like Mario as you play the game you acquire magic like this ability to reveal hidden items the game is difficult and it has some hit detection issues but luckily he has an enjoyable high energy soundtrack to keep you interested [Music] here's liquid kids by Taito released in 1992 in this single player action platformer you take control of hippo Po and you set off to rescue your girlfriend hippo po has water bombs for weapons he can throw multiple at a time or hold the two button in for a slightly larger bomb enemies don't die when hit with a water bomb but they do freeze once you touch them then they fly off the screen and they die horribly I presume if you're good enough you can chain enemies together for higher points there's lots of little icons here in there to collect four points as well the game is very fun and have Popo controlled really well even though he can't change his direction during a jump the graphics are nice and colourful and the music complements the gameplay definitely it came to having your pc engine library [Music] sonson - is a side-scrolling action platformer from Capcom released by NEC Avenue you play a sunset and you're trying to save your friends from a mysterious shadow figure that was shown in the intro your staff is your main weapon and it's quite useful you can also get magic from shops like these peaches that you can throw out your enemies these are kind of a pain in the ass since you have to hit the one in two buttons at the same time to throw them you'll collect a lot of fruit that enemies drop and that are hidden in walls the fruit is used as currency in the shop so collect all the ECAM I'm not gonna lie this game is tough boy I've been having a lot of hard times with these games the enemy placement seems cheap at times and when you die is game over unless you purchase to continue from the shop all in all is still a fun game though [Music] you know Davis amazing the kind of games at the turbo graphics and the pc engine have i mean a lot of people you know they totally ignore the system it but it has a lot of fun game it has a ton of fun games and that's the whole thing it's like why in america why was it Sega Nintendo in turbo on the outside when it had all these quality titles let's take a look at some more of these quality titles and some maybe not something [Music] bloody wolf is a cool overhead running gun it's two-player simultaneous in the arcade but it's single-player only here you begin the game with a mission to rescue the president who's been kidnapped by the enemy who exactly this enemy is we never really know but we sure as hell like blowing them away so it doesn't matter you have a machine-gun and grenades and both of these weapons can be powered up you'll definitely need a controller with a turbo switch for this one and I can not imagine playing with that one in the game you'll need to rescue hostages to get items and information the game can be tough until you learn two patterns but you do have unlimited continue so it shouldn't be that huge of an issue [Music] there is a hell of a lot of slow down here and it gets pretty bad still the game is enjoyable with average visuals and fun music [Music] last alert for the cd-rom is another cool overhead single player run-and-gun this one is experience based and you gain more life and weapons as you commit more and more murders this one has a lot more stages than bloody wolf and they're bigger too but of course being a CD game you'd expect that since CDs have however the game as a whole is a little easier especially since it saves your progress that's okay though because it's still really fun to play through multiple times some missions have you running all over the place planting bombs or even rescuing hostages in the light the graphics are kind of plain but good the music is really cheesy but still somehow very enjoyable of course the standout feature in this game is the comically bad voice acting guy Kazama if you don't want the hostage killed you should keep quiet in the back of this Factory it doesn't get much better than this overall based on the gameplay alone I think I prefer this one over bloody wall but if you add in the thick layer of cheese that this one has then it's no contest don't get the Japanese version you need the English version it's a great game and one I definitely recommend if you have a CD system cool almonds already been taken away well then all I need to do is that you tell me where he is [Music] [Music] shadow of the beast even got a court on the do though the game only calls itself beast this is a fairly fun part of a game that's based mostly on memorization as there's lots of running around to do keys and power-ups to find and enemies to defeat the game design can kind of seem a little bit weird at times I mean there will be spikes or branches that come down on you for no reason whatsoever or random thrusters here for no reason other than just to harm you I mean why else would they be there to launch the ceiling into space you're in an underground cave oh well that's okay that was the way European game design was back then no rhyme or reason doesn't mean it can't be fun and yes of course being a European game the water drops will hurt you so avoid them anyway like I said it's still fun though and the scrolling in the outside portion is outstanding for the turbo in fact the graphic detail everywhere is actually quite amazing the standout feature for me though is the music hell the game is worth getting for the soundtrack alone [Music] it destroys the soundtrack in the 2016 reboot game and the gameplay here is tighter than it is on the Genesis versions [Music] who says that the turbo doesn't have absolutely the best sports games ever to grace a console well actually pretty much everyone says that but it does have John Madden do OCD football I mean this is clearly all you need check out these insane full motion graphics here TTI presents the latest in digital video technology John Madden football for the turbo duel and look how happy John Madden is to be on the turbo he can't contain himself as a game it's ok got a lot of sports fans you're about to experience the most intense action ever felt in a video game it plays like the genesis and the Super Nintendo versions for the most part but sadly there are no passing windows but what they did put in the game is lots of full motion video of the referee telling you how it is first down you also get the occasional shot of the massive crowds cheering for you and if you make a touchdown some high school player in a different uniform comes in to spike the ball out of all two football games on the console this one is the best [Applause] first down Valkyrie no densetsu is an action-adventure game released in Japan by Namco Hearn am kott or whatever the hell they were calling themselves back then you play as a Valkyrie sent from Valhalla to save the country of Marvel and as you can see the game is played from an overhead view your character can shoot in 8 directions which is nice but sometimes those diagonal shots are kind of tough to pull off you make your way through each of the seven levels killing everything in your path you'll meet people along the way that will give you items like this rainbow ball thing that fills your magic meter magic is easy to use as you just have to hold in the - button for a few seconds eventually you'll make your way to a boss fight these are fun and typically not too difficult the game looks great and I like the art style of your character in the enemy sprites the music I found to be really enjoyable and it only adds to the experience do try this one you will like it [Music] Godzilla is a fighting game by alpha system that was released on CD for the turbo duo in 1993 in the single-player game you fight as Godzilla and you can choose between two different battles at the start of each round this is good because it adds some replayability the bad part is that you can only fight as Godzilla if you're able to play with two players and you have the option of picking other monsters the gameplay is pretty sluggish in Godzilla controls just like you'd expect a 25-ton monster to so I guess I should say that is spot-on instead of sluggish graphically it does have some nice character sprites and the backgrounds are interesting which is always a plus in fighting games the music is good but you know it doesn't seem to fit the action this is poppin magic which of course was only released in Japan from Telenet this 1 or 2 player game plays on a single screen and it might remind you of some of Tytos stuff you know like bubble bobble or you know one of those this one doesn't seem to be related to magical popping on the Super Famicom as far as I can tell anyway basically you shoot the enemies with your wand and this imprisons them in a colored bubble you can then shoot the bubble a bunch of times to destroy it or you can pick it up and toss it into another bubble to increase your rewards and power-ups be careful not to toss a bubble into the same colored bubble though as the enemy will reappear and he'll be all pissed off and stuff honestly though instead of tossing bubbles into each other I usually just try to destroy them with my wand it's tedious as hell but it's honestly the safest way eventually you'll get to a boss encounter and I feel that these are the best parts of the game between each world our cutscenes and the characters sure have a hell of a lot to say to each other oh my god skip the graphics are very saturated and I like how often the scenes change the music is OK nothing really stood out very much for me I'm not very good at these kinds of games but I always end up playing this one for quite a while [Music] superstar soldier is the second game in the star soldier series this vertical shooter looks plays and especially sounds a lot like blazing lasers also on the turbo graphics you've got some cool weapons and the music is decent when you get hit your weapons drop a level until they bottomed out at which point you die otherwise honestly this game kind of bores me to tears it's not that this is a horrible game or anything there's just nothing really special about it [Music] thankfully things got a lot better with final soldier as you guessed this is meant to be the final soldier game ever sadly this one was only ever released in Japan the gameplay feels a bit smoother the stages are much more interesting and overall the game is just really really fun you can even choose how you want your weapons to work before you start the game the options you get that follow you around can be sacrificed for a really cool special weapon the stages can be kind of long but you know what that's ok because the music is outstanding hell I wish the stages were even longer than they are Plus being the final game in the star soldier series you get to see how this epic saga ends [Music] turns out that final soldier was all a big lie because then we got soldier blade this one definitely has the best graphics of the bunch there are some nice colors even a few parallax effects and overall it's just very well drawn and fortunately it plays really well too you can still sacrifice one of your options for a special attack but your options here depend on your weapon so each color has its own type of special what's cool is that you can stock three of them at a time though only one of them follows you around on screen the action is very intense and as always it's pretty easy to power yourself back up if you get hit or die and lose everything and it goes without saying that the music is fantastic though not quite as good as that in final soldier I like the sound effects as well with some smooth panning of your weapon fire as you move left and right across the screen this is a series that really improved over time and the last two games on the system here are outstanding [Music] [Music] my god we've talked about a lot of teams are we done yet Joe oh hell no Dave I mean there are a lot of great games for the system let's take a look at a few more let's keep rolling [Music] or dine from Namco is a port of an arcade shooter and it was released in 1990 don't worry folks I won't call it a cute uma because the term is starting to get old and a bit annoying but it is very cartoony and very colorful and cute you play as dr. tamari trying to rescue his girlfriend in a key that she's wearing around her neck that can unlock the or dye nuclear reactor I wonder which one he'd like to have back more the key or his woman I think the key because without it they've both begun I like that his ship has no canopy which lets his hair blow freely in the wind and also let's bug splat on his face your basic weapons are your main gun in a bomb you can enter a shop that appears a few times during a level and by weapon power-ups and speed boost which makes it kind of like fantasy zone in a way this would be really cool if whatever weapon you bought would last more than a few moments what's worse is that they start immediately when you leave this shop so you can't even save them for a boss fight just flip your turbo switches up and use the default weapons the graphics and music are fair but sadly this one had to be scaled back from the arcade quite a bit this is a decent shooter that can bring a bit of enjoyment but is far from amazing [Laughter] [Music] cotton is a super CD shooter that was released for the system in 1993 by Hudson soft you play has caught in writing your broom around dealing lots of pain and death small fairies will accompany you and can help you a little bit in battle enemies will drop crystals that you can shoot to change their color each color will help cotton when she collects it by giving her experience which will upgrade our weapons they also will give her magic attacks that are very helpful on bosses to do the magic attacks you must hold in the fire button for a couple seconds it's quite easy but you'll want to play with the turbo buttons on for rapid fire so when you want to do a magic attack you have to turn the turbo buttons off it's slightly annoying because it's an extra step but you know what are you gonna do the graphics are amazing I've always loved the backgrounds and the enemy sprites with skeletons and evil-looking trees and whatnot the soundtrack is also exceptional and this is just a fun game to play [Music] [Music] and how about a little Galaga 90 from Namco this is a really nice part of the arcade game which was called Galaga 88 in the beginning you can choose from a single ship or a double ship right off the bat the action starts off feeling very similar to the original with enemies streaming in from the sides of the screen the play mechanics are the same as you can only go left and right on the bottom you can still get your ship captured and then rescue it again I like how some of the enemies blow up and make fireworks at the same time eventually you'll open up a warp dimension which I guess takes you to the 90s the screen now Scrolls vertically as you fight a few ragtag enemies that come on screen eventually the enemies will just appear all information there's also music now where there wasn't before the dimensional warp and there's even boss fights it truly is the 90s this is a great addition to your turbo library so get it now why it's not overly expensive and before people start accusing us of driving up the price here's Hana taka daka released only in Japan in 1991 by Taito yes it's another very bright and very colorful shooter don't let the aesthetics fool you though because this is not an easy game or is it that I just suck at shooters there's plenty of enemies that come at you at all times and lots of them take multiple hits plus everything that you kill turns into a raccoon and falls from the screen and that can be very distracting and yes I know it's tanuki but hey but luckily you can collect power-ups that will really help your weapon once you do have a weapon pair up just quickly charge up your power meter and unleash it these are very helpful but only last while you're big when you take hits your character shrinks in and you'll have to resort to firing your weapon with the turbo switch is on still it's a fun game with a decent soundtrack and it's definitely worth a try [Music] this is fuzzy amor for the super CD and it was only released in Japan this game has so much potential to be awesome you play as this sexy lady who's trying to save the world from demons or something I don't know her doesn't really matter your main weapon is a whip which you can fire off in any direction except down if you press the jump button again while you're in the air your whip fires up and can attach to a platform kind of like Bionic Commando you can collect three different colored special attacks which happen if you press down an attack at the same time but only if you're in the air and you can use this an unlimited amount of times like a ghouls and ghosts once you get hit your armor flies off get hit again you become naked and of course being naked means instant death you have many chances to get your armor back throughout any given stage though the visuals are for the most part excellent and really well drawn where the game fails however is the stage design there's rarely ever any need to use your special Bionic Commando style moves really the game should be full of this stuff the stages are also slow and the checkpoints are very few and far between ghosts and goblins and ghouls and ghosts got this aspect right but this game just gets boring what brings it down even more is the extremely repetitive soundtrack seriously just put on your own music honestly my favorite thing about this game other than its potential is the music in the title screen this game could be so awesome but it ends up just being yeah kind of good [Music] the turbo graphics even got an exclusive adventure island game called new adventure island that's right this is brand-new still it's based on the old adventure island actually the oldest adventure island with its gameplay style that means you've got to keep getting fruit to keep your health bar from draining you got to get weapons from eggs and try not to get hit because you die in one hit regardless of the familiar gameplay style there's still plenty of new weapons stages and bosses here to keep it fresh I mean how can it not be fresh this is new adventure island its new the graphics and music are both good but to be honest I did expect a little more from a game that appeared so late in the consul's live it's still worth having if you can find it for a few bucks which of course you can't [Music] wanna see the true power of the turbo graphics 16 then look no further than Falcon spectrum holobyte you're a hothead air jockey and you get to choose your own weapons in this adrenaline-pumping action fest take off and get ready to blow up the enemies all of which happen to be right near the base where you just took off from hell yeah the combat is so real you'll even feel the g-forces as you spin out of control yes it's Falcon on the turbo graphics 16 from spectrum holobyte this is why you game on a console and not a PC equally as powerful if not even more so is gunboat your put where everyone wishes they could be and that's in the middle of the Vietnam War get briefed by your CEOs arm your gun bow and then get ready to destroy Charlie the graphics are almost too real the game is so lifelike that you'll be treated horribly by society after you're done playing as you attempt to deal with the terrors that you've seen and yes seriously both Falcon and gunboat are quite terrible this is Marcin maze from Namco and as you can guess it was only released in Japan it's an overhead action game where you take control of Alice you play the game on board suspended high up in the air Alice can shoot bubbles at her enemies which will knock them back in off the sides of the level holding the to button will produce a slightly bigger bubble which will knock her enemies back even further but be wary because your enemies will do the same thing to you if you get knocked off the sides you ever reserve of two balloons that will bring you back up to the playfield it gets pretty hectic at times with lots of enemy shots coming at you from all directions the game is generally fun and is definitely tough but are you tough enough I guess you'll have to play to find out the graphics are like the music which are passable but not amazing [Music] here's final lap twin by Namco released in 1990 if you like RPGs and you like racing games then this title is for you as it's a mixture of both genres there's two ways to play this game the first is like any old racing title advancing from one circuit to the next the races in this game are always split-screen but there's more than meets the eye with this game there's also a quest mode here you can walk around town and get information you can buy and equip new parts to your car and of course what RPG would be complete without random battles which are actually just races when you're walking outside of town you'll get accosted by random people that want to race you if you win this one lap race and you collect a nice sum of money and move on from where you are if you lose the race and you get sent back to your house where your dad console's you and gives you 300 bucks so either way you're still making money the game is fun and it's definitely challenging until you start building up your car stats it's a novel idea and a refreshing take on the racing genre [Music] let's take a quick look at all of the super graphics games I mean why the hell not 1941 counter-attack is a port of the arcade game from Capcom this is how the 1940 series of games were always meant to be lots of fast incomprehensible action going on all over the place and even an annoying alarm when you're near death who doesn't love that now the scrolling isn't always smooth but at least the music is pretty much always excellent it's not the best game on the poor super graphics and it doesn't really show off much of the consul's power but it's still not bad at all [Music] all dines is the horizontal shooter for the super graphics it's okay I mean again it's not horrible or anything but it's not outstanding there is some decent parallax scrolling in this one though you can generate a little shield to block bullets remove small obstacles and destroy weak enemies but the problem is that you have to disengage the rapid fire switch to use it and you're not gonna want to do that the music is again really really good though [Music] Grands org is a pretty good action-platformer during the gameplay you can switch between one of three robots at any time of course each one has their own unique powers and weaknesses you'll need to use each in different situations the super graphics powers are used here for true overlapping parallax scrolling in every direction and generally the game looks pretty good the music isn't bad but it's not really anything noteworthy either no pun intended overall the game is enjoyable and is rather challenging but it's certainly not the most in-depth game of its time [Music] the best game on the super graphics is the port of die macht I'm Mora or ghouls and ghosts as it's known here in the West this one has more memory than the Genesis game and as a result tends to be more faithful to the arcade with the exception of the scrolling layers here which somehow they messed up compared to every other version that's okay it doesn't break the gameplay or anything the game is incredibly fun as well as challenging I've always thought ghouls and ghosts was the best game in the entire series that's right I like it better than super ghouls and ghosts deal with it this version offers only a limited amount of continues though yes you have to go through the game twice to properly finish it and yes of course I beat it it truly is a fantastic game and if you have a super graphics you absolutely have to have this one [Music] this is battle ace the one super graphics game we couldn't review in our super graphics episode well here it is and you fly an aircraft shooting down enemies while avoiding their attacks and sometimes other things floating in the air you have a regular gun as well as lock-on missiles both of which have an unlimited supply the stages are pretty long but eventually you'll get to a boss you'll also encounter challenges like trying to fly through these stupid rings be careful because one hit and you're dead and it seems like it takes 8 minutes to finish dying you see I'm still dying generally this one's rather boring to play if this uses the power of the super graphics I'm not sure how I mean it's fairly unimpressive the music isn't bad and that's probably the best thing about the game sadly there's really not much more to say about battle ease [Music] the only other super graphics compatible game is Darius Plus this is just a pc engine game but when you play it on the super graphics there's a bit less flicker since the super graphics can put more stuff on screen at any given time it's pretty hard to tell the difference though if I were you I just go play ghouls and ghosts instead alright now we are done with episode number two of turbo graphics indeed and the turbo graphics is an awesome system especially when you're able to play the imports and stuff like that there's a lot of shooters out there if you like that kind of thing yeah it's the system for you it really is so what other games are out there because you know the library in Japan is way huge so let us know what other games we should be looking at and in the meantime thank you for watching games [Music] you [Music] what's up Joe oh hi Dave check out the turbo graphics 16 it's a video game console that has many great games to play especially when you factor in the ability to play Japanese imports [Music] Joe I'm sorry but you're an idiot I mean look at this you've got so many choices here your TV's not even on because you can't make a choice you have way too many games here this is just ridiculous I'm sorry but [Music] what now Joe I'm a busy guy I don't have time for you to show me another video game system where you have way too many games to choose from and you never actually get around to play anything oh hi Dave check out the super graphics this video game console which has not more than five games [Music] now this is more like it with such a limited selection you never waste any time sifting through a massive library of games from many prolific developers to many choices can be overwhelming and with the super graphics there are only two genres represented there's 1941 which is a shooter there's aliens which is a shooter there's Baddeley's which is a shooter there's ghouls and ghosts which is a platformer and there's grandeur which is also a platformer there's no need to even turn on the TV because it's simply easier to choose not to play since there's not much available only the super graphics respects the burden of too much choice placed on modern society and what's cool is that the super graphics can also play the entire library of PC engine games what [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to game sack this week we're gonna take a look at a true gaming oddity that's right the Pioneer laser active Wow Joe what the hell is this well you remember games in the arcade kind of like dragon's lair or maybe Space Ace oh hell yeah me and I love dumb blue stuff well this is kind of like the Home version of that kind of sort of a not really but the games come on giant laser disks oh that's interesting laser disks you're gonna have to remind me about laser disks no problem developed by pioneer MCA and Philips in the late 70s laser disk was a video format originally known as disco vision it used gigantic optical discs and it could hold 30 or 60 minutes of sound and video per side crazy the video was pure analog composite which was plenty flying for the primitive Society it was made for movies had to be split over two or more sides and sometimes even more than two discs later model laserdisc players switch sides automatically but there was still an interruption eventually digital sound was added to laserdisc and later than that 5.1 sound came in the form of Dolby Digital and DTS the discs themselves were fairly expensive and it was a fairly niche format as a home video format it eventually failed shortly after DVD was introduced pioneer laserdisc it's the best show in town is it really I think that must be a crappy town in Choa anyways so the laser active is basically heaven for gamers who love full motion video then huh yeah more or less I suppose and now let's take a closer look at the system itself the laser active comes in the form of the Pioneer CLD a 100 laserdisc player back when it was introduced it cost over 900 dollars but that's not all in order to play laser active games you needed to have what's known as a packed there was a second pack and there was an NEC pack these modules would plug into the slot on the laserdisc player itself games compatible with the Sega pack were called mega L DS and games compatible with the NEC pack were called LD ROM twos and not exactly a catchy name now these games wouldn't run unless you had the appropriate pack plugged in and each pack costs upwards of six hundred dollars at the time except for this kuroky pack which as you can see cost twenty nine dollars at a thrift store these packs were damn tough to remove to you really needed to pound the button hard what's more is that the sega pack could plays sega genesis games and even sega CD games and if you wish to disassemble your power base converter yes you can play Sega Master System games on it too the 32x could not be enjoyed on the laser active unfortunately the NEC pack to play turbo graphics 16 games as well as turbo CD games if you wanted to play import games well then you needed a Japanese equivalence to each pack now what's interesting is that the video encoder quality of the laser active is different than a real Genesis or turbo graphics 16 s composite video output notice here the composite video output of my real Genesis model 1 the rainbow stripes in the waterfall is Sonic moves around on the laser active the rainbows are gone and the composite video is much better quality on a real turbo graphics 16 notice how the background shimmers when I move up and down this rope on the laser active this doesn't happen at all unfortunately the laser active only features composite video out so it's not perfect but for composite video it's pretty good and of course the laser active can also play laser disc movies it does an ok job but it won't playback Dolby Digital sound and it won't automatically flip sides for you as a laserdisc player it's okay but nothing great so Joe can you take a laser active disc and put it in a laserdisc player and passively watch the game that way well you know some people say they can do that but when I put it in my player it just kind of spits it right back out and I can't watch anything I don't know why Wow really anyways do you think we could see some of the actual games playing on this system uh yeah sure let's take a look at some games [Applause] [Music] first up is space beserker on the mega LD this game is incredibly unique because it has full motion video backgrounds and you have a crosshair to shoot your enemies paste it on top of it basically your main goal is to shoot the enemy shots to defend yourself your secondary objective is to shoot down to enemies if you find the time wow this seems exciting you bet it is this is what the laser active is all about okay moving on here we have pyramid patrol for the mega LD it turns out there's a pyramid on Mars and we have to blow it up we don't like other planets having pyramids oh just the thought of another planet having a pyramid pisses me off that's right we can't have that anyway this game is really unique you see it has a full motion video background and you have a crosshair on top of the video to defend yourself and to shoot enemies wow that sounds exciting you bet it is this is what the laser active is all about [Music] next we have the mighty Hyperion also on the mega LD this game is unique because it has a full motion video background and you have a crosshair on top of that to shoot down enemies as you fly around actually I think that's a spaceship not a crosshair Joe oh I guess it is it still acts and works like a crosshair though but in this game you'll need to dodge stuff and fly through an occasional ring this one sure dials the phone up to 11 yeah now this is what the laser active is all about well let's take a look at Vajra this time on the LD ROM to Vadra huh this key must be all about the vag well you better sit down to it because madra is a super unique game that provides full motion video backgrounds that gives you a crosshair to shoot things and defend yourself this time your goal is to defeat a giant robot in each stage hey Joe what what is that I see there it's called color this is the first laser active game to have colors I think well yeah but there's no detail well you can't have both still this game is my favorite of the crosshair games and I really like the music it sounds like raisin bar 2 on the PC engine CD too bad there's no sound test though [Music] well Joe those games were all right you know but definitely not worth paying $1,000 to play them though so where is dragon's lair yeah unfortunately dragon's lair and games like that we're never released on the laser active no Dragon's Lair no no Don Bluth I am out of here no no no no sit and stay I can show you a game similar to dragon's lair and a few other good games if you like ok ok show up to me this game is called Triad stone for the mega LD I imagine it was originally an arcade laser disc based game basically you follow some cartoon dude around give him power tell him which direction to go and which direction to swing his sword so it works pretty much just like dragon's lair then yeah pretty much it's not a bad game I just wish it would look better yeah these games look kind of poor even for laser discs why is that Joe well that's because all the video and laser active games is presented in 240p instead of for ATI this is likely because the Genesis and turbo graphic games are all in 240p and it had to overlay those graphics on top of the laserdisc video so the video portion of these games were at half the resolution of normal laserdisc video well that sucks I know [Music] here's one of my favorite full motion video games in the world Road Avenger on the mega LD but here it's called Road blaster or a road prosecutor depending on which region of the sega pack you have plugged in but you know i'll always prefer the name road avenger anyway the video in this game looks great although it's only half of the resolution of the arcade if even that it looks much better than the Sega CD version of the game unfortunately this game is just too tough you must react incredibly fast to the on screen prompts or you will die also this game keeps mirroring the video back and forth randomly for no reason whatsoever I hate that and the sound kind of sucks too really it's nowhere near as good as the Sega CD version in any way except maybe the video quality where it's definitely better still it's pretty fun though [Music] here's my favorite game for the laser act of JB harold manhattan requiem for the turbo graphics pack longtime viewers will remember how much I love JB Harold murder Club in the turbo graphics 16 episode and this game is a sequel to that anyway one of the characters from the original murder Club has died and two other people with nearly identical names also died what's more is that they have all been ruled suicide by jumping out of windows maybe they should change the name of their club to a suicide Club is up to you to crack the case you'll meet plenty of characters oh crap that's Morgan Freeman every line of dialogue is voiced and as usual they went to the game sack school of voice acting take a listen my name is roberto rosetti you say you're a detective from liberty town huh so mr. Harold what do you want with me looks like an astronaut Anna I still cannot believe Sarah killed herself can you understand how it feels to be a father who has lost his daughter that's uh please go home sorry I don't like Italians I agree there's something suspicious about that suicide I don't want to talk to that kind I got hooked on this game and of course I've solved the mystery and I've completed the game I do recommend you turned the voices and animations off because that makes the game much snappier if you turn all this stuff off you can complete the game in a little bit less than eight hours if you leave all that off it'll probably take you about 70 or 80 hours you can also get this game on your iPhone or iPod for $1 it now has cartoon characters and most of the text has been directly copied over even the typos there are no voices though [Music] once again this is my favorite game for the laser active there's another JB Harrell game called blue Chicago blues or some crap like that and it has a bunch more full motion video but I haven't seen it and I haven't played it so I can only guess that it's probably pretty good what is your name I see mr. Harold okay Joe those games weren't too bad really is there anything else cool on this system well you know I don't know about cool there's a lot of edutainment stuff and some other random stuff let's take a look let's look at the rest of the games I have for the turbo graphics pack first this one came with the turbo pack and it's called quiz econo Saurus it's a piece of crap but maybe it'll help children save the world someday [Music] next is Angel mate a game where you play strip poker with Asian ladies I have no idea what I'm doing in this game and I have not seen one bit of nakedness I might like this one let me take a crack at it Joe yeah I'm gonna need some tissue and privacy please okay now on to the rest of the games for the Sega Pack this is 3d museum which offers 3d images I was almost able to play this one for a minute and a half before shutting it off I can't figure out how to control the menu it seems really glitchy this is I will the story of London you have some weird English Doc Brown type of guy whining about something for 30 years we finally succeeded and now it's calm then you drive around and look at things and I have absolutely no idea what's going on here at all yeah what's the point next game please what are we gonna do now at the International clean air conference everybody's waiting to see it what can I do are you so know who is gonna help me find the Alfa ozone for me this is rocket coaster which actually lets you speed up and slow down the video depending on the speed of your vehicle it works ok your goal is to basically stay on the track sound exciting well it isn't [Applause] here is virtual cameraman I guess you get to take pictures of naked girls here you can select from several below average looking Japanese girls basically you ask them questions and depending on how you answer them they may let you take pictures of them I have absolutely no idea what they're asking I have no clue how I'm responding due to all the Moon language here so I have yet to see a naked girl ass equal called virtual cameraman to came out believe it or not it's more of the same just with three girls this time and they look slightly better I suppose konnichiwa ladies somehow I was actually able to take some pictures in this one but I never saw any nakedness yeah I think I keep trying again and again if I own this one I'm gonna get my money's worth the Great Pyramid lets you learn all about the pyramids of Egypt what the hell is this this EDI I am so sick of this educational crap game system should have games well at least these pyramids on earth and not Mars oh no I'm getting worked up again these pyramids are for humans only construction began with the sides sloping at 54 degrees but at a height of 50 meters the slope was reduced to 43 degrees Wow Joe that is just one weird ass piece of technology that is did we see every game for this system though well no there are some games like time gaol which are crazy rare and they're extremely hard to come by and very expensive and I can't show that nerd some others that I don't have either so huh time kill huh all right well you know what next time I'm at the thrift store I'm gonna keep an eye out for it oh thanks anyway that's a pioneer Laser active foria we hope you found it interesting and we'll see you next week [Music] [Applause] [Music] Wow nice throw hey at least these laser active discs are big enough to encourage some physical activity yeah when we use them like this every game is a two-player game hey this is time girl by the way you actually do own it I guess [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome the game sack this time around were taking a look at another underrated system and this time it's the Nintendo GameCube that's right Joe a lot of people shun the Gamecube in favor of the PlayStation 2 and even the Xbox but the system in actuality has a lot of great exclusive titles it really does and it even has the awesome game boy adapter it is anyway before we look at the games we're gonna take a look at the system itself the Nintendo GameCube was launched in North America on November 18th 2001 just three days after the launch of the original Xbox the consoles name was very descriptive because that's exactly what it was a cube that played games it also had a nifty carrying handle on the back of the system were connections for power analog audio and video as well as digital audio video though the digital port was only ever used for video requiring you to use both Jack's simultaneously which was definitely not cool the console supported progressive scan and widescreen video Nintendo eventually did away with this Jack entirely on late model game cubes it was the first Nintendo system to use optical discs as the main method for game delivery though they went with small discs with very low capacity only about 1.4 gigabytes that meant that games often had to be split up over multiple discs or that features from multi platform games had to be removed from the GameCube version the standard controller looks very strange at first offering a rather bizarre but very comfortable button layout and perhaps the best analog stick ever for any game system the Gamecube would eventually get add-ons like a modem broadband adapter and a Game Boy player which let you play Game Boy Advance games on your TV the online capabilities of the system were barely touched upon however as Nintendo officially say that that gamer did not want to play games online instead they focus on what they called connectivity where you attached a Game Boy Advance player to controller ports and each player could see his or her own screen on the GBA the system was supported until early 2007 and sold 22 million units more than twice as much as a Sega Dreamcast and it also should be noted that the C AV formatting of the Nintendo GameCube discs also help Moe times to be pretty fast Joe just what the hell is C AV I mean act like everybody's just supposed to know what that means they don't know what's not well I'll see AV stands for constant angular velocity which means the disc always spins at the same speed no matter what position the laser is in kind of like the old laser discs which only had a half hour video per side but it really helps to seek times and all that stuff that is very interesting if you notice another fun fact that I probably will never remember again oh yeah do we have any games what we're gonna take a look at yeah why don't you start out what do you got for us I'm gonna show three of the finest [Music] first up is Luigi's Mansion alright so the game keep launching there is no Mario title to the dismay of hundreds of fans you know I bet if they did have a Mario title at launch the system would probably be a lot more popular sadly we will never know Nintendo decided that it was time for Luigi to have a chance at glory and gave us Luigi's Mansion it's not a typical platformer game that people were accustomed to with a new Nintendo system this time around Luigi has to save Mario who is trapped in this mansion by the same scheme that got Luigi there anyways you play Luigi's Mansion by going room to room solving riddles you use your gameboy horror to search for ghosts and lock onto their beating heart hmm ghosts don't have beating hearts Dave if they did they wouldn't be ghosts they dude look at the gameboy horror there's a beating heart right there here you'll get a clue of what you need to do to be able to see the ghost and suck it up with your Poltergust 3000 ghost vacuums [Music] once you collect some of the bigger ghosts you will get a key which will open them new parts of the mansion to explore and repeat the process again the controls in the game are really good once you get used to them the music is also good for the game it's not creepy by any means nor are the graphics which are way more cute than scary remember this is Nintendo exactly we've got kids to think about here I think it's split right down the middle on people who like this game and people who don't I for one do like it a lot and had a great time with this game it was in is a game that's very unique I'm highly anticipating the sequel that's coming out for the 3ds [Music] and here is super smash bros melee what game system is complete without fighting games none of them the CDI didn't have any fighting games and look how impressive that thing was he was so right granted the Gamecube never saw any Street Fighter King of Fighters are dead or alive but that doesn't mean it didn't have anything fun instead it had the biggest fan boys fantasy come true smash brothers melee pits characters from all across Nintendo's franchises against each other in a four-player battle royale actually this is the best part when you get three of you Nintendo fanboy friends together and you spend hours playing this game like it's just five minutes even if you're on your own you can play this game because there's so much content that it would be very hard for you to get bored in single-player you can play the adventure mode which has some platforming and all-out battles like defeating a certain amount of Yoshi's before you can progress or you can play the 4 player melee with three CPU characters the control in the game is good and the fighting is far from deep I mean you have a block button punch button and a secondary tech button a block button what is this Mortal Kombat oh god no well as far from difficult it's a true button masher that's very fun back to fanboy step this game is loaded with it each stage is taken from a different Nintendo franchise the music is remixed awesomeness from Nintendo games PAL labs has got to be my favorite second-party developer everything they seem to put out is pure goal in what would a GameCube episode be without a mention of Metroid Prime when it was first announced as an FPS game I had mixed feelings firstly I loved the Metroid series so naturally it was very happy to hear this I loved Metroid so I was very sad to hear this secondly at the time I wasn't a fan of fps and I thought this would never work how can you have a platforming puzzle solving game as a fps well I was very pleasantly surprised by the outcome Metroid Prime is a great game all around retro studios did an amazing job with a Metroid franchise they made it all fit together so nicely that I was immersed in the game from the first couple of minutes of play the controls took a bit to get used to but ended up making perfect sense the world created in this game is a very deep the graphics are very good for the GameCube and the music is outstanding it's a mix of classic Metroid melodies and some atmospheric minimalistic awesomeness [Music] throughout the game you are required to scan objects to open things up and get further in the game if I remember correctly a lot of fans complained that this slowed the game down a lot I myself liked it very much that's because of your collector mentality must scan everything oh and I did I loved scanning all objects possible to learn about the surroundings scanning fallen pirates to learn how they met their demise scanning bosses to figure out their weak spots it all made for a very inclusive experience that feels very much like Metroid of course Metroid Prime 2 came and was good but not as good as the first one a must-have for any Nintendo fan yeah but Super Metroid is still the apex of the series to this day in my opinion but it's not on the Gamecube and of course you can get the Metroid Prime trilogy on the weed but it's not very common so be prepared to spend some big bucks for it yeah but they did make them all control like Metroid Prime 3 which is actually really nice that was pretty good control so alright Joe what games have you chosen to talk about well how can I just show you that's a great idea [Music] rogue leader aka rogue squadron 2 was a launch game for the Gamecube it covers the same time span that all three original movies take place in you also get to control a bunch of ships you really don't care about either all I really want to control is the next wing and the Millennium Falcon I hear you on that many scenes from the original trilogy are here and during those scenes you can control Luke Skywalker there are other scenes that take place elsewhere in which you control some other Yahoo the game is very challenging and also quite rewarding now I've heard it said that this game pushes the Gamecube to its limits graphically you know I don't know about that but the graphics are very good they are good graphics I was pretty impressed when I first played this game the sound is also well done with good imitations of most of the real characters and some good fakes around thanks to Dolby Pro Logic 2 sometimes it's hard to spot the TIE fighters that you need to destroy because they blend in with everything else and you really can't see him on the map due to all of the clutter a fun game but my enthusiasm for the Star Wars universe has seriously dropped off so I really don't care for the storyline waverace blue storm is another launch game for the system I loved wave race 64 on the Nintendo 64 uh-huh you're not the only one it was one of my absolute favorite games for that system and I couldn't wait for a high-powered sequel so how this one turned out well Nintendo handed it off to Western developers and they did a decent job the water looks really cool and sometimes it really feels like you're smack in the waves as you speed past the control is pretty tough and I don't think it controls anywhere near as well as wave race 64 but it's still quite manageable for the most part I also found the controls a little lacking the n64 game controls so nicely it really did the music is good in a few spots but overall it's nothing that'll blow you away one thing waverace 64 had was an announcer who was extremely happy [Applause] [Music] the announcer here in blue storm seems a little less thrilled to be here [Music] [Music] or did take practice plus the character choices here are also lacking I never found any of them interesting I hate when game companies tried to give a polygon character - it just doesn't work [Music] f-zero GX is one amazing racing game Nintendo knew that they could never make the game as awesome as it needed to be so they handed it to the only ones who could Sega that's right only Sega had the skill to make a proper Nintendo game oh geez I have mixed feelings about this statement Joe I think Nintendo could have made it very good but I have to give credit to Sega they did an excellent job here presented in widescreen this game is frustratingly intense that's right I said frustrating this game is absolutely punishing to all but the most dedicated players yeah frustrating is a good word is super hard to win races on upper levels even when you feel you've had a perfect race judging by the graphics this game takes place a few years in the future and in the future games always run at 60 frames per second Sega knew how to use the GameCube hardware better than Nintendo did in fact Nintendo never made a 16 by 9 widescreen game for the system ever they were weak the music is great as well though sometimes it seems a bit racist for example the music in the Lightning stage constantly insults Italians by repeatedly saying [ __ ] walk hey Dave aren't you Italian uh I'm half Italian my parents crest ready and I'm a mutt oh so it's only half if that's up to you then but despite its difficulty this game is amazingly fun and addictive and worthy of the f-zero name isn't this game slightly different from the arcade game f-zero ax well yeah there's a few different tracks here and there too bad I didn't have my GameCube memory card with me when I saw it in the arcade Super Monkey Ball was yet another awesome launch title for the Gamecube in fact it was made by the same development team who would later make f-zero GX and I've got to say this game right here is one of my favorite games of all time the goal is simple you have a monkey trapped inside of a transparent ball and your mission is to tilt the floor in order to get the monkey to the goal before the timer reaches zero that's it there are tons of stages in here to play in master and thanks to the GameCubes awesome analog controller to control simply could not be better you can kind of get this game if you buy Super Monkey Ball deluxe for the ps2 or xbox but the control simply isn't as good because there are dead spots in the analog that kill you despite the simple gameplay things can get a bit challenging here and there for example level 7 here on the expert mode is definitely the hardest stage in the entire game but otherwise the game is pretty easy for me I like the fact that the developers put an easier routes in some of the stages so novices can have fun and make it to the goal also yeah you can often take shortcuts to work to higher levels more quickly but you don't want to do that because then you'd miss out on some of the Super Monkey Ball goodness the graphics are pretty good and they get the job done and the music is generally pretty catchy as well it even has party games which are fun like monkey racing and of course my favorite monkey target but actually I've got to say Dave is the pro at monkey target hey thanks Joe I hate to admit it but I like monkey target even better than the main game that's because you happen to be as good at monkey target as I am with the main game wouldn't you agree huh yeah you are right [Music] anyway this is a game I come back to often and I always make sure to beat it completely whenever I play absolutely no other monkey ball game ever made can live up to the greatness of this one but Sega did try with Super Monkey Ball - this time it's in widescreen and progressive-scan and it looks great this is the second best Monkey Ball game ever made unfortunately they put in gimmicks that bring the game down like toggle switches that you have to pay attention to now it's no longer a simple matter of just getting to the goal you've got to operate moving parts of certain stages with the switches still it's really fun with even more stages and the music is great there are even more party games here and monkey target 2 is still pretty awesome oh man it's good but monkey target in this game suffered they changed up the formula nuff to make it too easy they took out the skill shot of the small platform and made it easy to get power-ups it's still enjoyable and the music in this version is actually a very incredible but it can't beat the first monkey target suffice it to say I'm good at both of these Super Monkey Ball games so here's some examples of the fun I've had with these two games [Music] [Applause] [Music] you know Joe despite not having a Mario game a release the game keep launch lineup was pretty impressive it was you know it is basically the opposite an n64 is launch lineup which consisted of Mario 64 and what title Wing yeah finally yeah yeah well anyways there's a lot more GameCube exclusive games that we'd like to show you and we're gonna do it via a montage [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] and there you go tons of GameCube games you should probably check out that's right I feel bad because my memory card was corrupted and I couldn't show a lot of the later levels in those games in the montage that I wanted to yeah you're pathetic Dave but remember you can also play GameCube games on your Wii system as it is backwards compatible that's true but remember in 2011 Nintendo took out the Wii GameCube compatibility on the Wii so if your we have GameCube controller slots and memory card ports you can't play GameCube games on it yes but if your Wii doesn't have stuff like that and you can't play GameCube games on it you could probably find a real GameCube system for cheap since most ways are backwards compatible so you might as well even use a real GameCube system anyway thanks for tuning in and we'll see you next time [Music] hey Dave let's see what the Gamecube looks like that stairs on my new big screen can you bring it up oh oh yeah all right I'll grab it no not like that what are you doing what's right dude this is my third Gamecube I know what I'm doing here no no no not like that what are you doing you're supposed to pick it up by the handle see it's a handle handle that's the handle yeah didn't you see the opening segment of the show oh I missed it I bet that was to put your course towards oh it's nothing geez gonna make Sam Baily's no wonder it's me bro candle [Music] [Applause] [Music] are you still playing Nintendo then what you need is a Sega Dreamcast with the Sega Dreamcast you'll experience hours of fun and excitement with each and every game available you'll be flabbergasted by all 128 bits you want racing games we've got only the best racing games on the planet that are guaranteed to make your heart palpitate it's a Sega Dreamcast awesome you bet it is we've got fighting games role-playing games platform games extremely unique games more role-playing games more fighting games even sports games everything you need to be a winner we've got great graphics but there's more you can go online and play with other players from around the world that is if you don't get disconnected we've got the most spectacular library of games anywhere so why mess around with that stinky Nintendo Stiga bring on the games Sega Dreamcast available and limited one of these may cause leakage up the anal glands hello and welcome the game sack now as you've probably figured out we're gonna spend this entire episode talking about the Sega Dreamcast and his games the Dreamcast I thought it was a Sega dream catcher dumbass is the Dreamcast you know that I do anyways the poor dreamcast it was an awesome system but it had a really really short lifespan and even though I had a short lifespan it made a huge impact on the world of video games that it did and with that said let's take a closer look at the Dreamcast itself the Sega Dreamcast launched in Japan in late November of 1998 in the US on September 9th 1999 at the time it was the biggest US console launch ever the magazines claimed it was 128 bit console but the main sh4 processor was 32-bit whereas the graphics had 128-bit processing the software was on GD roms which were the same size of standard CDs but had the capacity of 1.2 gigabytes the Dreamcast made sure that you knew when it was accessing it is because a horrible grinding sound of the laser could be heard from - two miles away the controller was a bit odd it was modeled after the Saturn 3d control pad but it removed two of the face buttons and made the remaining one smaller it also made the d-pad an analog stick out of a very hard and sharp plastic the vmu accessory acted as a memory card we could display primitive graphics depending on what game you are playing you can also transfer entire Dreamcast games to the VM you to play on the go oh wait just get it you can't do that of course the system had the standard AV output but it also had a wide array of VGA boxes made by many different manufacturers which allow for 480p on almost every game the US version also came standard with a modem but you could also get the optional broadband adapter for high-speed Internet play there were several games that took advantage of it but unfortunately the server's no longer exist though some games let you and put your own many Dreamcast web browser still work but the internet looks pretty ugly if the sites you want to go to even load at all though many still do the system was discontinued less than two years after it was released and sold about 10 point 6 million units total [Music] yeah oh the Dreamcast definitely is an awesome system you know but there has been reports of a lot of disk drive failures yeah well the most reliable system ever made Dave but I've got to say it's probably a little bit more rock-solid in a lot of the modern consoles they're coming out with these days that's right and they did try to change the design of the system midway through in an effort to thwart piracy but I don't think that worked too well because it didn't stop pirates for very long now it didn't that system was very easy to pirate games for do you think that's what killed it Joe do you think well you know it may have had a small bit of an impact but overall I don't really think so like I said Dreamcast only saw about ten point six million units and Sega was bleeding money so that's ultimately what doomed it in but anyway let's take a look at the Dreamcast games and see what they've got yeah that's awesome let's do it [Music] samba de amigo is an amazing rythm game by Sonic Team the first time I played this I didn't think much of it as the music wasn't really my taste but after playing the game a while I got hooked the game is insanely fun the more you play there are two types of play styles you can use the maracas or just the regular old controller watching Dave play with the maracas is more fun than playing the game itself the object of the game is to shake your maracas or time your bud push the moment the blue or red balls are in the center of the doughnut looking circles outside of your on-screen character the closer you are to hitting the center of the circle the more points you will get as you are playing you will be graded on how well you are or are not hitting the beats if you do badly your grade will drop and the background will become sad and dark if you do great your grade goes up and the background goes ballistic with colors and animation it is truly a sight to see yeah they're totally spazzing out it's like they're on drugs or something I love watching other people play as it gives me a chance to stare at the beautiful backgrounds the game supports one or two players with mini play options from arcade or original to challenge mode at the time logging online to Sega via this game would let you unlock new music already on the disc oh I hate it when DLC is already on the disc a lot of the music was from other sake of franchises such as outrun afterburner Rena hero etc in 2007 Sega like gearbox develop a Wii version of this game along with a Samba mm naturally they screwed it up which is too bad overall Sega did an amazing job with this game and it is one of my top three games for the Dreamcast [Music] Soul Calibur Soul Calibur was a launch game and also one of the few games at Namco released for this system it's a sequel to soul edge or soul blade depending on your territory at this time the game blew everyone away with its crisp graphics and fast action to be honest it still holds up very well even today every character has seriously scary weapons did you just get cut with that gigantic sword no problem simply just get back up like anyone else would do no visible flesh wounds at all swords and other extremely sharp objects don't actually damage the skin so this is all perfectly reasonable the gameplay is pretty much about mashing buttons to win but if you like there is some strategy to be had if you look hard enough that doesn't mean it isn't fun though because it is it is a fun game I really had fun with this one and got to enjoy most of the characters though I'm not a huge fan of the newer games in the series yeah there are other modes besides the basic story mode to help add a little bit of longevity but it's really nothing amazing the graphics however are outstanding for the time even the intro is 100% real-time Dreamcast graphics the music is also excellent though it sounds pretty scratchy and harsh as it is seriously hindered by the compression they use to store the audio still this is probably my favorite Soul Calibur game and a definite must own for anyone who has a Dreamcast I hope they made enough for all of you jet rhinorrhea his objective you [ __ ] up in your face let's get scratchin check rain radio is another great game for the Dreamcast this game revolves around a gang in Tokyo tow they need to expand their territory by painting graffiti all over the place really that's all you need to do it acquire a new territory suite Sega's legal department did a great job of shuffling responsibility for teaching kids that it's really really cool to spray-paint they added a little bit of text before the game that loads up stating that graffiti is wrong anyways this is one of the earlier games that shows cell shading over traditional polygon graphics the end result doesn't disappoint by today's standards the game is a bit dated but it still does look great and is really fun to play as you go along opening up new territories you tag your graffiti all over the town and escape the police etc there's a DJ that blares a bunch of music by artists that I'm not aware of this is awesome as the game stays fresh and you're not playing the game to music that was in the top 40 or you know 12 years ago which now you probably don't like the control is really good and spray-painting large text is really easy just using motions on the analog stick the graphics are great and the colors in the game are really good the soundtrack like I said is good and it really fits the style of the game completely a sequel to the game was released on the Xbox but in my opinion it wasn't as good as the original there will be an HD remake coming this summer to your PSN and Xbox Live Arcade [Music] Ikaruga is a spiritual sequel to the Saturn game radiant Silvergun a lot of people absolutely love this game saying it is the best thing that mankind as a whole has ever accomplished it's a vertical shoot-'em-up and I'm not sure if it qualifies as a bullet hell shooter or not though I would say it does but you know any shooter with more than 20 bullets on-screen and once I consider it pure hell that's because you're not very good anyway pretty much like all treasure games this one has a gimmick to the gameplay the gimmick here is that you can switch between light and dark ships and your shots are accordingly light and dark when you're in light mode you can absorb light shots from enemies without taking any damage likewise when you're in the dark mode dark shots will damage light enemies more than light shots will and of course vice versa it's a really cool concept definitely you'll find yourself switching back and forth like crazy in order to stay alive it seems really cool at first but I'll be honest I grew tired of this game rather quickly the gimmick was very fatiguing to use and you're constantly switching back and forth to the point where it becomes very annoying the graphics are decent but nothing really stands out at all there's very little color in this game and the enemy designs look rather uninspired and generic the music is alright but again nothing really noteworthy sorry fan dick arooga is a good game it really is but personally I'd rather play radiant Silvergun next up is Power Stone you know Capcom sure did show the dreamcast a lot of love this is a 1 or 2 player fighting game it's set in stages that are littered with stuff to use as weapons like boxes plants benches etc litter is bad that's why you throw it at your enemy cheese you can even uncover weapons in treasure chests the ultimate goal of this frantic game is to get the three power stones once you do your fighter becomes a super fighter for a limited period of time during this time you can usually use a super projectile or a very hard to dodge super attack the game is pure chaos and very fun the graphics are really good for the time and have aged fairly well the control is good in the music is well you know the usual Capcom mediocrity my only gripe is that this is a two-player game Capcom fix this in Power Stone 2 and added four player support but they really changed up the multiplayer in that version and I felt it was for the worse I have a hard time keeping track of which player I am when there's so many on screens at the same time it's just too chaotic it's the same reason why Smash Brothers doesn't really appeal to me dead or alive too is another early Dreamcast game this time by Tecmo Dead or Alive started off as a poor man's Virtua Fighter but with this game it's now more similar to Tekken as as pure button mashing but this game has well-endowed women doing most of the fighting you can select from a bunch of characters obviously and even change their costumes Dennis Rodman is even in this game and he has one weird-ass costume look at that it's like a silver Teletubby the game has some sort of a nonsensical story about you know I have absolutely no clue what this game is about and it really doesn't matter the button mashing is overall pretty fun but the game rarely presents you with a challenge of any kind I like all the different kinds of throws yeah and I like the multi level stages and the lack of ring outs and somehow I was able to pull off this move that I thought existed only in the opening demo [Music] the graphics are excellent there's really not much more to say about them than that the music is pretty good too also the programmers did an excellent job of hiding the loading times in this game usually when you win a fight year at the next stage ready for the next one immediately this sucks if you're trying to enjoy a beer because you never have time to drink it ah Dave I think you need to cut back on that stuff [Music] those were some interesting Dreamcast games Joe yep are you gonna mention Shenmue well you know I love Shenmue to death it's one of my favorite games of all time David really is and I love Shenmue 2 as well but of course it didn't ever come out in America on the Dreamcast but you know we've already talked about Shenmue in depth and so I'm not gonna mention them in this episode yeah that's right it was in our episode number 33 games that caused polarizing opinions yeah so here's a good idea maybe you could put a link under our video that you know points people directly to episode number 33 I have already done that man I'm Way ahead of you it's directly below the video you can even click on it with your mouse and just go straight and watch that but first stay here and watch some more Dreamcast games we're not done yet [Music] confidential mission is about as close to virtue a cop as you're going to get on the Dreamcast the manual doesn't mention it but you can use a light gun with this game that's because Sagan never released their own light gun in fact I've never played this game without one you control this sexy guy oh you power Gibson see mmm secret agent yep he's almost always wearing a tuxedo of course he's not very good at sneaking around is about a thousand bad guys are always ready to shoot you down no matter where you are the gameplay is simple shoot the bad guys and don't shoot the innocent people also don't get shot sometimes there are little minigames to add to the variety like shooting adhesive bullets at the vents to save yourself or poison gas or decoupling a train car this adds a bit of variety to the gameplay and in a good way of course being a light gun game the screen flashes every time you pulled the trigger and it might get a bit annoying but it's still really fun yeah it is really fun um and I usually get enough into the game where I don't even notice the screen flashing it's much more fun than holding a Wii controller our PlayStation Move the graphics are pretty good for the time and they remind me a lot of Virtua cop the music definitely fits the game as well Virtua Tennis yeah I know I'm highlighting a tennis game but when the tennis team is this good you can't help but show it up I'll admit that as I played this game for this episode I noticed that the graphics have aged I used to think that the player models were completely realistic now they look like they all have skin transplants or something yeah skin transplants from a mannequin maybe well graphics don't always make a game especially a sports game what makes this game great is the control of your character it controls so well you'll just want to keep playing and figuring out the ins and outs of a server or where to hit the ball to make your opponent become unbalanced the game has typical elements of a tennis game singles doubles exhibitions circuit etc the graphics are pretty good when playing the game the cutscenes of your character don't look so hot though the music is fun as it's gotten some good guitar work and decent melodies if you only have about a half hour to play a game you can't go wrong with this one [Music] next up is out trigger by Sega it's basically Sega's own attempt at making their own version of games like quake 3 arena but instead this is a third-person shooter and it has its roots in the arcades it's a fun attempt but in my opinion not nearly as good as quake 3 was I agree but I definitely prefer to third-person perspective of our quakes first-person view anyway the single-player mode has you running around destroying terrorists an extremely small environments they just keep reappearing the control takes some getting used to as a dreamcast has only one analog pad but once you figure it out the controls should be pretty much ok of course this version had an online mode that was pretty fun that you can't play anymore oh yes you can always count on online gaming to be there I guess games are supposed to be enjoyed fully as they age you know Joe this brings up a good point and it makes me really think about purchasing games today that won't be playable in 10 years from now yep the graphics are well done certainly nothing to scoff at here and I like the character designs yep no fake to adhere to ruin this game the music also tends to be pretty catchy as well rumor has it that this has a land mode but I don't know anyone else with a broadband adapter so I can't even try it [Music] one of the launch games for the Dreamcast was House of the Dead - it was a great liking game where you got to shoot down zombies but this isn't the version of the game that I want to talk about here instead let's take a look at the typing of the Dead you're basically playing House of the Dead - with the keyboard yes folks here we have a typing tutor game only apply if you have the real typing skills none of you two finger hunting pecker should apply as you won't make it as far as real ten finger typers that's why I have a tough time with it you know you're a pecker aren't you Joe anyways words and phrases will pop up over zombie and monsters heads and you've got to type them completely punctuation and all before the zombies attack you the only thing this game is lenient about is capital letters the game as you can see is a spoof your character walks around with a huge Dreamcast where that battery on his back in a keyboard on his chest enemies throw a rubber mallets instead of knives every now and again your character will appear as a zombie why this happens I don't even know James go on pretending confusion in the city okay let's meet at sunset we're County James it's a great game to help you become a better type and if you're under this kind of pressure while typing in real life Ashish I merely find one I only have one or two words to knock out but when there's a long phrase comes up I do stumble oh and the freezes are completely wacky in this game some of them are downright hilarious a great game if you have the means to get it and a keyboard to player works really well and is a great fun you know Dave I couldn't beat this game but my mom did true story she's a secretary at her job and she could probably win the typing Olympics she beat it on her first try you know how humiliating that is no my friends are inside I'd also like to quickly mention toy commander a lot of people are big fans of this game basically you're a kid playing with this toys pretending they are on real missions in the house like a helicopter dropping sugar cubes into coffee and whatnot you can control different vehicles to accomplish the different tasks all of which are defined for you the beginning of the mission I don't know Joe these graphics seem really dated to me oh they definitely are but at least they're in widescreen one of the few Dreamcast games with support for sixteen by nine the music and sound are pretty unmemorable though what the hell did this kid just flood his entire house just so he could have a water mission yeah looks that way you should be glad you don't have a deviant child like this one Dave it's all fun and games until you have 4 feet of standing water all throughout your house yeah I hope they have a mop and a bucket anyway this game never really grew on me like it did for others you know I can see some appeal but I just rather not keep playing it well Joe that was definitely fun I mean how about that voice acting and type into the - almost as good as ours oh man just about that Dreamcast sure has a lot of fun games to play yes it sure does look at this thing but longtime viewers will know our mo by now that means we have a big montage o game so sit back and watch [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] man dave is so sad at the Dreamcast's had such a short life I really think they could have been a contender if say had done things properly yeah I totally agree I mean I thought they sold a lot of units in we're doing fine but then they just failed or something they just kind of dropped up and quit the rates gave up yeah well whatever it is but hey there are still people making homebrew games for the system though that they are but they don't really take advantage of everything the system can do but I guess it's better than nothing I suppose well maybe but well that's the Dreamcast for you and we will see you in two very short weeks with a new episode [Music] [Music] thank you for the new dream cat news [Music] get healthy Debbie you got a Dreamcast yeah so can i play now uh yeah I guess so yeah let me hook it up like racing game I got a real nice yeah you know this is a two-player game can i play too [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to game set this time around we're gonna devote an entire show to Nintendo that's right we're gonna take a look at the n64 this time that's exactly right there we are looking at the n64 so Joe why don't you tell us all about the system sure the Nintendo 64 was released in 1996 as a follow up to the incredibly successful Super Nintendo unlike its competitors the n64 featured no internal moving parts greatly enhancing its reliability they used cartridges for faster loading times when everyone else had moved to CDs the system featured a 64-bit CPU running at ninety three point seven five megahertz but with the 32-bit system bus it eventually got an expansion pack which doubled the RAM to eight megabytes with only a few games required it had a weird controller with three handles it featured an analog stick and four C buttons as well as a Z trigger underneath the middle handle when all was said and done the n64 sold about 33 million units worldwide [Music] Joe that was some great information but probably nothing that people didn't know already and I noticed you forgot about the 64dd oh yeah come on Dave that was released in Japan only it used 64 megabyte magneto-optical dist store its information and stuff like that and you could do things with it like store your user created tracks on games like f-zero it had what maybe nine release titles yeah see I told you the Virtual Boy has a lot of games compared to other systems yeah whatever anyway let's look at some real nintendo 64 games beetle Adventure Racing was quite a surprise for me at first glance I didn't think I was gonna care at all for with a VW beetle being the only car in the game how fun could happy well let me tell you that I really enjoy this game and I still enjoy today the graphics have aged a little bit but for the time it looked fairly lush is fast paced and each track is loaded with multiple paths there are so many different paths you can't even take everyone within a single three lap race yeah and I'm always forgetting with shortcuts I've been through and I want to go through them all Oh tell me about it along the way you can brake cartons that give you points towards a continue or even a nitro boost but the tracks are super long so you better get comfy an average three lap race is about eight minutes long the control over your car is very good and you'll get the hang of it after just a few races there's some issues with the hit detection but if you're good it shouldn't be an issue I really like the atmosphere of this game take for example this part of the track in inferno Isle it's a total ripoff of Jurassic Park with the t-rex that breaks down the huge fence that's supposed to keep them inside it's this kind of imagination that I really like a total ripoff but with great imagination awesome you catch my drift in my opinion a must-have for your n64 collection f0x is a fast-paced futuristic racer and probably one of the better games for this system overall just like you'd expect you pick your racer and your cup and off you go next thing you know you're blazing through flat tracks tunnels where you can go crazy spinning if you're not careful as well as weird tube-like tracks oh yeah those tube tracks are crazy I found it very hard to stay attached to this stupid track the whole time the control is pretty smooth but you must press a combination of different buttons to attack which is really weird plus the downright bizarre shape of the n64 controller really doesn't help things still though I have a lot of fun with this game despite its difficulty the graphics are pretty plain with lots of fog and really next to no detail but it does run at a constant 60 frames per second and that's really cool the music is awesome but unfortunately it's in mono also the announcers voice is kind of weird the Super Nintendo version is still my favorite and this one ranks number three behind the GameCube version but if you have a Nintendo 64 you really ought to consider adding this one to your library [Music] last core is quite a fun game that has possibly the best storyline ever in a video game a missile carrier is out of control and it's your job to clear a path for it using multiple types of construction vehicles and mech style robots if you don't clear a path in its KaBlam mode and the human race as we know it gets incinerated yeah I don't understand this why doesn't someone just shoot the tires because this is a video game Joe and there'll be a really short game the control of all vehicles is pretty good and it's fun just to drive around and smash everything even if it's not in the path of the missile carrier yeah wanton destruction is always such fun luckily the missile truck moves at a very slow pace giving you enough time to clear the path or make a bridge for it to go over or whatever you need to do graphically the game is pretty average and the music isn't very good the voices can also be super repetitive but I'm usually having too much fun with the game to really care I had a really good time with this game and I think you would too another good game by rare before Microsoft ran them into the ground [Music] nice multi racing championship or MRC is an arcade like rally racing game I used to really enjoy this one back in the day but looking at it now it has an aged well the graphics are so blurry that they hurt my eyes but I really did enjoy the arcade like experience a long time ago the co-driver always seems so concerned and damn this game is tough I can't even get anywhere in the game and I don't know if I did back in the 90s but this was the first game I ever played with a rumble pack so probably not since I don't think he can say with a rumble pack in place actually Joe certain games will allow you to switch out controller packs for rumble packs so you can save and have Rumble it was a chore but it could be done oh well you would know I guess since you're the fan boy anyway the rumble feature is probably why I enjoyed it so much back then because it was just so new and different but nowadays I might suggest approaching this one with caution [Music] give it everything you've got [Music] what are you doing get a move on Diddy Kong Racing was a mascot kart racer trying to cash in on Mario Kart 64 s popularity and you know this one is pretty good you can choose from all of your favorite rare characters like timbre and drumstick I was so happy when I saw they made it in the game yeah me too you can't leave such popular characters out anyway the game was pretty much like your typical kart racer except there is a built-in hub world like Super Mario 64 has you are in a balloon when you win a race and you need a certain number of balloons so you unlock certain races I love balloons yeah that's nice not only do you race in a cart but many races put you in a hovercraft or even a plane I like that you can race in different vehicles in the tracks are all designed really well for each type of craft yeah once you are in a race in a certain section you can even race the boss all in all the game plays well and keeps you coming back for more the graphics are very colorful for a Nintendo 64 game and there's not a lot of fog or drawing rare definitely needs to be commended for that the music is pretty much what you'd expect for something like this overall it's a great kart racer I agree with this and it's still enjoyable to play [Music] you Wow Joe we sure seem to be talking about a lot of racing games Jess so the n64 has a lot of good racing games who cares shall we continue yeah we should wave race 64 is one of my favorite games for the system Oh mine too definitely it was something new as I'd never played a racing game with jet skis before yeah I never played the original game boy version either yeah yeah anyways there was something about how the jet ski controlled in the water physics that just meshed together making a perfect racing experience the locales were all really nicely rendered with lots of atmosphere the track design was great not only did you have to be your opponents but you had to follow a specific track outlined by different colored boys if you miss more than five of these the race is over it made for some really close races on harder levels yeah I can get pretty intense at times and it almost feels like I'm really controlling something bouncing on water there was a rumble pack version of this game released only in Japan which added to this feeling even more the best way to win is to customize the controls of your jetski you'll definitely notice the differences in handling after you tweak some of the settings also included with this game is a fun stunt mode in this mode you make one lap around any of the courses and try to get as many points as you can by pulling tricks off of jumps and consecutively passing rings the music in this game is really good for the action [Applause] this is a must-have for any n64 collection absolutely it's actually my favorite game for the system [Music] star soldiers vanishing earth attempted to follow up the popular star soldier series on the NES and the turbo graphics 16 the first thing you'll notice is that instead of being an overhead shooter you're now at an angle since the Nintendo 64 could do polygons and all that stuff hardly anyone wanted to make strictly 2d games and that's a shame as this game looks and plays more like a poor man's ray storm than the star soldier game I am happy to report that the game does get more enjoyable on the upper levels but it never really becomes much above average at any point it does have the two and five minute modes where you try to get as high of a score as possible but that's really as close to a star soldier game as it comes the graphics and music aren't as cool as the older games either yeah I hate to see I did not like this game at all it felt very basic and just boring the game had no atmosphere to it so you felt like you're just going through the motions almost like it was actually working not played overall it's a mediocre effort that I initially had some high expectations for [Music] Kirby makes it in 64 appearance in kirby 64 the crystal shards as you may know I'm a huge Kirby fan so I was really looking forward to this one when it came out firstly as you can see Kirby is now a polygon and plays on a mix of 2d and 2.5 D planes a lot of this game I felt that it was imitating the first klonoa game in a way that you progress through the levels and also how the game looks and feels but it's still Kirby as you can steal your enemy's powers Kirby 64 adds a little bit by letting you combine two enemy powers to make a new type of power this aspect is really fun as there are quite a few combinations you can make oh come on Dave I know how you really feel about the rest of this game this is not your favorite Kirby game is it sadly no the whole game moves at a fairly slow pace which can be mind-numbing at times and overall there really isn't a lot of challenge to this game some of the mid bosses are ridiculous as they just sit there waiting for you to kill them and they don't even defend themselves the end level bosses are a bit tougher but you can still beat them on your first try the music is also a mixed bag it has some traditional Caribbean mainstay themes that I really like in a few that I hadn't heard before but wasn't really impressed by it overall it's a fair game but probably the weakest game in the Kirby franchise [Music] Banjo Kazooie is one of the better mario 64 clones available for the system it takes what mario has done and adds enough extra content to make it feel unique you collect music notes skulls puzzle pieces and much more there is a nice variety of levels and I really like their design the music has some decent melodies but for the most part is pretty simple and not hugely enjoyable the game does have some camera issues and you will be annoyed at times but it's not unplayable by any means you know the banjo character never really appealed to me so I didn't bother with this game but from what I'm seeing here it looks like I missed some pretty good gameplay I really liked all aspects of this game I found it very satisfying just wandering around finding areas and items that opened up new paths definitely a great game for the n64 the sequel called banjo tooie was released two years later [Music] Super Mario 64 is an n64 mainstay it was launched with the system and was a revolutionary title at the time in that it was one of the first fully 3d games so to speak you could explore almost anywhere everyone knows how this game plays by now so it's not really necessary to discuss this in depth however it was a fantastic game for the time and it still is today a truly great first romp in 3d for Mario I never had any problems with the platforming in this game like you have in a lot of other 3d games of the time and even some games today I loved the whole atmosphere of peaches castle and finding all the secrets I played this game for all it was worth back then lots of great memories [Music] [Applause] everyone also knows about the legend of zelda ocarina of time personally I kind of got bored with this one as it didn't excite me as much as linked to the past on the Super Nintendo did but everyone else seems to really love this game I agree with you on this one Jo is not as good as a Link to the Past but unlike you I wasn't bored at all by it it was followed up by majora's mask which required the ram expansion thingy I didn't care for this game at all I didn't like the whole repeating three days game playing I didn't like all the masks in the game it really just never hooked me so I didn't play it much before I got bored of it I applauded Nintendo's effort but it wasn't for me all right the n64 has some really great games and you know what we're not done yet that's right so let's take a really quick look at some other Nintendo 64 games 1080 snowboarding is a great snowboarding game it has some great runs and the halfpipe battles always make you want to top the high score Yoshi's Story is fun but very strange lots of weird sound effects by Yoshi and some strange platforming California speed is an interesting and fun racing game it's also one of the few n64 games with nearly CD quality music [Applause] [Music] Castlevania 64 is a poor excuse for a Castlevania game it only slightly feels like Castlevania an internal clock can make the story and events different depending on what time of day you play Castlevania legacy of Darkness is a sequel and updated version of the first game it cleans up the graphics a bit and add some new levels characters and enemies Xtreme G is a futuristic combat racer it's fun in small doses very small doses that was followed up by extreme gxg - this one is so extreme that they had to make the graphics a lot more blurry just to fit all of the extreme into a single cartridge Mario Golf is a very addictive golf game set in locales all throughout the Mushroom Kingdom is very colorful and it has some solid golf action Mario Tennis is another great game by Camelot great tennis action with everything Mario and company.the cruisin series of racing games was pretty interesting cruisin USA was a rough port of the arcade and kind of twitchy but also kind of fun cruising world takes you out of the country but retains the twitchy control [Music] my favorite was probably cruising exotica here it's fun despite all of the Faden and it controls very well dr. Mario 64 is a part of an amazing puzzle game one of my favorite puzzle games and it has some really catchy music now for some reason the rush games are another well-known racing series I've always thought San Francisco rush was extremely mediocre but I was used to Sega racing games you see rush to is a nintendo64 exclusive game that takes you out of San Francisco the blurry graphics and the boring gameplay even come along for the ride [Music] San Francisco rushed 20 49 takes place in the future where they were able to substantially improve the graphics unfortunately they still couldn't fix the lacking gameplay it's also on the Dreamcast Excitebike 64 is is 3d sequel to Excitebike it has some good animation control and fun tracks the music is lackluster glover was really interesting when i first played it though it seemed to be a chore to play and the control seemed overly convoluted so i didn't get very far goal tonight double-oh-seven is one of the best multiplayer games on the system can you get the Golden Gun the single-player mode was decent though Killer Instinct Gold is a part of killer instinct to his suffers a bit because of the cartridge memory but still a worthy game Conker's Bad Fur Day is dare I say rares best game on the n64 Hideo what a great platformer this is very humorous and a great looking game on this system very good multiplayer game also this was remade for the Xbox [Music] Mario Kart 64 is a great installment in the series it really shines in multiplayer mode [Music] micki speed away USA is a decent mariokart rip-off by rare it's colorful and controls really well but it just doesn't have enough to make it that great mischief-makers is a treasure game it's cool because it's 2d but since this buy treasure it's very gimmicky I never really got into it Paper Mario 64 is a great RPG with a Mario cast some really neat ideas around the paper theme there were three mario party games on the 64 they have some fun multiplayer mini-games if you're into that sort of thing [Music] perfect dark is a decent first-person shooter there would have been a lot more popular if it wasn't for gold Knight pilot wings 64 is a great sequel to pilot wings the very enjoyable game with some really cool extras like canon mode and wing man free flight [Music] Pokemon Snap is very strange indeed you must take pictures of Pokemon and you get graded on all aspects of the photos you've taken it's entertaining in small doses Ridge Racer 64 was actually programmed by Nintendo it's not bad and it has the twitchy control that Ridge Racer is known for you can even choose a car called the ultra 64 sin and punishment is a great third-person action game by treasure how they made such good use of the n64 controller I still can't understand Donkey Kong 64 is not rares finest effort on the system it has kind of clunky controls and rather bland graphics Smash Bros is a great easy fighting game that will make any Nintendo fanboy happy with all is catering to the Nintendo World Star Wars Rogue Squadron was cool for a Star Wars game and it uses the expansion pack for higher resolution starfox 64 is a solid sequel to the original it adds a few new vehicles and some decent multiplayer harvest moon 64 is a farming simulator is damn exciting stuff if that's what you're into Top Gear really is a decent rally game for the system I used to really like this game but it hasn't aged very well nice control but there's not much entertainment value these days top gear rally - tried to be a more realistic rally game it also tried to be much less fun than the original top gear overdrive is like a poor man's beetle Adventure Racing complete with shortcuts it's ok [Music] top gear hyper bike is pretty fun they have some good music but it doesn't look anywhere near as nice as Excitebike 64 what tricks is a fun puzzle game where you must build lakes to hold water pieces come fast and you must think quickly great fund especially in multiplayer later released on the Dreamcast and PC Tarak the dinosaur hunter was surprisingly enjoyable for me but despite the immense fog and the ugly graphics truck 2 has better graphics but it's definitely choppier Tarak 3 returns to some ugly graphics and it has smoother gameplay but it's still not as fun for me as Tarak 1 the new tetris is tetris but with nothing super special it adds a few new aspects but they aren't great some decent backgrounds are its best feature geoff force Gemini is fairly fun it takes time to get used to the controls the game is very linear but the developers did a great job of making the levels look as lush as possible Wow Dave the n64 definitely had more stuff than I initially realized oh yeah I know it definitely does you know it's definitely not Nintendo's best system but it's no slouch into a Sega fanboy like yourself it might have more than you think you know maybe so well thanks for checking out our new Tendo 64 episode and we will see you next time [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello and welcome to game sack we are taking another look at the Nintendo 64 yes we are and I have a huge theory on why we're doing this video again but I'm not gonna say anything until we take a look at the overview video that Jill made for this episode okay well let's just look at it right now realistically lush and detailed 3d worlds were the promise of the Nintendo 64 while other companies forged ahead with CD technology Nintendo decided to stick with cartridges due to speed and piracy issues but the world found a way to pirate games almost immediately with the doctor these 64 attachment the system is also known for its unique 3 handled controller with its exciting plethora of C buttons and an analog stick though I personally prefer the story pad which was only released in Japan and the force right on the front of the system where four controller ports built right in inside the system was a wicked NEC VR 4300 CPU running at ninety three point seven five megahertz the graphics were handled by a sixty two point five megahertz RCP which of course stands for reality coprocessor because the Nintendo 64 is all about as one of the last remnants of the bit Wars the Nintendo 64 saw 388 released games it sold about 33 million units worldwide [Music] alright that was a highly informative video as always and did you have to put that in a backpack when you carried it up the side of the memory bag maybe not necessarily backpack why wasn't the game tagged anyways my theory is that it's it's obvious to you as well as it is to me that Joe loves the Nintendo 64 he doesn't want anybody know but you know he's doing this video just so he can play some more games okay and if you notice this video is in 4k because Nintendo 64 requires 4k it truly does an equal also at 60 frames per second which is almost as fast as the Nintendo 64 slowest game it's amazing anyway let's get into the games themselves [Music] let's take a look at a few of Konami's offerings here's the mystical ninja starring Goemon from 1998 in my opinion the game made a good transition to 3d it plays very similar to other titles and has your roaming towns to get information and items that are necessary for your adventure the game still retains the light comedy that always head and you see little bits of funny things here and there the tails look ok and have some decent detail to them you have a map screen that you can pull up in real time that helps you determine where you are in the old games you are able to hit anybody you wanted to with your pipe but in this installment you can only hit the thieves once you get out of town though it's all enemies so whack away also when you leave town the areas are much bigger which brings in the [ __ ] so you can't see too far away enemies also pop in when you start to get close to them and the detail in the background goes way down compared to the smaller areas but hey at least you have some good music to listen to while you're wandering around go among controls great and you can switch between him and three other characters once you unlock them my only real complaint about this game is the lack of camera control for the most part the camera works fine but when you get into tight areas it pretty much sucks still the game is fun and is definitely worth a play Goldman's great adventure came out the next year in 1999 Konami did a great thing here and made this installment a 2.5 d platformer this is great as it feels much more like the 16-bit games the game looks pretty good and one cool thing that I like was the day and night cycle stages feel slightly different when the Sun sets and more ghosts are out there there's also different things that can only be done at night for example during the daytime as well as empty but at night you find this iguana man who will give you a pass if you just leave him alone things like this add a little bit of depth to the game and I'm good with that here you get another great soundtrack that's light hearted and fits nicely with the game's humor which helps make this another good game for the system [Music] [Music] kastlevania was also released for the system under the basic title of Castlevania I'll be honest I wasn't really happy seeing Konami taking my favorite two DS here using given it a 3d installment but being a big fan of the series I had to give it the benefit of the doubt I'll tell you right now it's down towards the bottom of my list when I ranked Castlevania titles as far as Castlevania games go this game kind of sucks as far as an action platformer goes it's really not that bad you can choose between two players at the beginning and off you go to kill Dracula controlling Reinhardt is a mixed bag for the most part I had no problems getting him to go where I wanted him to he does have an auto lock on two enemies when fighting which is very helpful but when you want to whip a flame a lot of the time he'll whip off to the side or he'll turn around to whip out an enemy that's coming up from behind this brings me to the camera which definitely needed work there's three different modes you can try out but they all seem to have the same problem of only showing the action in front of you when you're battling in circles graphically I do like the settings that are represented here and they look decent although there is quite a bit of fog also the character models could have used a few more polygons seeing some faces stretched over a low polygon head is more funny than anything else the music in this game is amazing when it plays it doesn't play all the time and that's a shame because man is it good like I said this is a decent action platformer and the problems that it has can be overcome if you're willing to give it a try in 1999 Konami released Castlevania legacy of darkness at first I thought this was just a re-release of the first game after they had fixed some of the issues why how was I wrong so the game does have a lot of levels from the first game but these have been redesigned and lengthened but the game does have a bunch of new stages as well it feels like a lot more effort went into this release the camera has also been tweaked and it does a better job of showing you what's in front of you but I still found it to have problems if they would have just given us manual control over the thing you would have been fine the game does use the expansion pack which gives higher resolution to the textures the soundtrack is still amazing and has a bunch of new tracks as well if you're gonna play one of the Castlevania titles on the n64 make sure it's legacy of Darkness [Music] [Applause] [Music] body harvest by DMA is a pretty cool little game you play as this stylin dude named Adam Drake who dresses like Samus from Metroid basically aliens have taken over Earth by 2016 and now you need to travel to various places in the past to defeat them it kind of reminds me of a primitive version of the EDF games in some respects as you're running around blasting these aliens but it also has a tiny bit of Grand Theft Auto and that you can commandeer different vehicles run over people and all that anyway you have different objectives for each area that you need to complete for example you see a giant boulder so you need to find some dynamite blow it up and find the old guy's house and then you can get the key to the hangar from him stuff like that you can enter some buildings to find extra health and fuel as well as other items like new weapons and ammo so you definitely want to explore everywhere the problem is is that it all looks the same and it's really easy to lose your bearings the map screen helps out a little bit but really not as much as it should you can blast enemies on your foot or wall in your vehicle and I almost always chose to fight enemies in my vehicle because of the extra maneuverability and defense that had afforded me it's fun blasting these bug like aliens the game looks awful though the camera is pretty bad pretty much everything is bad in fact there's really nothing positive that can be said about the visuals the music is really good though and not muffled at all still it's an enjoyable game but it did make me a little bit motion sick after an hour or so I'd really like to see this one remade for modern systems and done justice Super Nintendo fans love RPGs in the tradition continues on the n64 with quest 64 fans would never give this console a pass if it didn't have quality RPGs I mean look how much they hate the Genesis good thing they have quest 64 to meet all of their RPG needs you star as a kid trying to save the land your questing in 64 bits screw you Chrono Trigger screw you fantasy star screw you Final Fantasy 3 screw you lunar 2 and screw you Panzer Dragoon saga that's because quest 64 is in town battles feature octagonal areas where you can move in attack excitement doesn't get much more exciting than this quest 64 it takes a really long time to move anywhere and it makes you feel like you're on a real quest 64 bits actually just kidding this sucks [Music] [Music] [Music] over battle 64 was released in 2000 and it's a real-time strategy RPG it's real-time because there's really no set terms for your characters and enemies you can move them around the overworld map at your leisure or try to intercept your enemies or run away if you're weak when you do get into battles combatants fight in real time in actuality there's little that you control here you can choose at any time who you want your little group to target but that's as much control as you're gonna have over battles as you start to fight each side takes two attacks and then the battle ends someone is declared a winner and a loser and then you go back to the overworld map from here you can just chase your enemy to keep on battling him or go somewhere else just like previous entries into this series this is a great time if you're into strategy RPGs thank God that the developers only use polygons in the overworld map areas each battle still uses hand-drawn sprites and backgrounds and they look really nice the music is also highly enjoyable and kind of gives the game an epic feel to it if you're a fan of this kind of game and have the time I'd recommend it there's not much of this stuff on the system so it's kind of nice to have a good one here [Music] here's Paper Mario developed by intelligent systems and it's the second RPG style game star in that little plumber after defeating Mario with a star rod in the intro Bowser has once again kidnapped Princess Peach Mario isn't a sore loser though and in his quest to save the princess he helps the seven star spirits which in turn helped him counter the effects of the star rod as the title suggests Mario is paper-thin in this game actually everything in the game is paper-thin at the time I really thought this was a cool idea and Nintendo did an excellent job making everything look as if it was cut out of a piece of paper so this is touted as a regular RPG but I feel that it's almost more of an action RPG sure there's turn-based battles but you have much more control over Mario and whoever he has at his side helping him out enemies are in plain sight on screen and most of the time you can just avoid them if you don't want to get into a battle in all actuality it really isn't a tough game if you're not much into RPGs and this would be a great game to get you into the genre the graphics are very colorful and a polygons for the most part look great with a fair amount of detail the writing in this game is comical and I'll admit that I'd left more than a few times this is definitely one of the highlights for the Nintendo 64 library [Music] okay Dave are you loving the Nintendo 64 redo episode so far I am loving it Joe I'm having a great time playing these games but probably not as much as you are cuz we're a hidden fanboy for Nintendo I know it secretly but yes I am loving this episode anyway let's just get back to the games we didn't show much as starfox 64 in the original episode because it was mentioned in a previous episode and people complain whenever we cover games more than once oh well here it is and it's basically a remake or a retelling of the original game on the Super Nintendo basically the story is is that you need to defeat evil and restore peace yeah that's actually a bit deeper than that but it doesn't really matter to the gameplay here you fly the arwing around again just like in the first game only this time it controls much more smoothly thanks to the nearly impressive power of the Nintendo 64 you can keep tapping the fire button for Rapid Shots or hold it in to build up a charge shot which will let you lock onto an enemy now you can't lock onto multiple enemies Panzer dragon in style but in the words of the immortal Keiji Inafune a it's better than nothing you also have new maneuvers like a u-turn and a somersault though I couldn't pull them off every time I tried them but most of the time they worked there's tons of radio chatter here and of course that's to be expected since you fly with a team they suck and you've always got to rescue them personally I just wish they'd all die so that I could fly alone in peace if they do get damaged then they usually sit out the rest of that round as well as the next round there are multiple routes you can take which are determined as you play each stage the graphics have not aged well and honestly they kind of look like bad FMV since it's so grainy the music is good though it sounds like the Super Nintendo and there are tons of voice recordings what's weird is that there's a training mode which shows you all of the moves but Pepe tells you everything you need to know anyway during actual gameplay in fact he does it through the entire game so there's really no need that I can see for the training mode to exist still all in all it's a great game that I've enjoyed since I got the Japanese version back in the day and I highly recommend it for the system you can also get a nicer looking and sounding version on the 3ds now I won't let you get away from me hybrid heaven from Konami is an interesting game it's actually one of the few times that Konami paid attention to the system I'm not really sure what the story is everything seems really weird and creepy but you seem to be some sort of secret government agent badass type of dude you run around inside your base where your own guard turrets and things will shoot at you so you have to shoot them down kind of weird but okay it's the typical hold er trigger and fire with another button in this case the Z button or Zed for all of you outside of the United States you roam around shooting and unlocking things and eventually you'll get in your first fight with a monster and here's where things get a little strange it's all menu driven you choose from a set of moves what attack you'd like to throw and if you'd like to guard or counter or whatever as strange as it sounds it kind of works now granted it doesn't work extremely well but it's good enough to get the job done but that means that the fights take longer and you don't really feel a whole lot of intensity it's about the same as a turn-based RPG only since its used in the game like this it feels kind of strange the graphics aren't horrible and this is also an expansion pack enhanced game you can choose from the original low resolution high resolution or high resolution letterbox sadly like many expansion pack enhanced games the high resolution drops the framerate substantially and honestly it's not like the framerate is impressive to begin with here's what it looks like on the normal resolution here's high resolution it's a damn slide show and here's high resolution letterbox and too bad it's letterbox and not true anamorphic widescreen even with the menu-driven fight scenes I couldn't play through the game like this seriously I just recommend keeping it in the low resolution mode it's an interesting game with an interesting concept at the time of this review it's fairly cheap so you may want to give it a go hey let's talk about Mario Party in this game you can play up to four players at a time or even single player with three computer-controlled characters to even it out each player hits a dice block and moves the number of spaces showing once everyone has taken a turn fund ensues and everyone plays a mini game together the winner gets coins that are used to buy items and stars stars are the best thing that you can get and will ultimately help you win the game the boards were also cool to play on and we're pretty simple when landing on blue circles you get three coins but when landing on red circles three coins get taken from you there's other circles that do different things like this star that lets you play a single-player minigame or these question mark circles that triggered something on the game board there was a lot of great ideas for minigames in the competition was fierce a year later Nintendo released Mario Party 2 this game plays exactly like the previous game but it has 5 all-new boards to play on and a bunch of new minigames this entry was my favorite for the n64 I really like the themes of the boards and of course my favorite was HorrorLand well not [ __ ] land well you know what if they did have a [ __ ] land I think I'd like that too anyways the imagery was really cooling it would switch from day to night if you land on the question mark circle hell even the characters got into the act and dressed up for the boards they are playing on the minigames were good but you know it wasn't good that they were already starting to recycle games from the first title and believe it or not Mario Party 3 was released a year after part 2 it plays the same as always but to keep the action from Guinea's steel Nintendo tried some different things they added a quest mode where you have to play all the board's and collect stamps it's very superficial as all you're doing is playing the same battle game that you'd play with the three AI opponents they slightly change the graphical style which in spots mimics paper cutouts like Paper Mario which is kind of cool they also started adding a lot more types of circles to the play board this title both 70 all new minigames and they're all right for the most part they even started adding games of chance which I don't care for since there's absolutely no skill involved like this one where you pick a chest and hope that you're lucky enough to uncover toad after Mario Party 8 on the Wii I finally got sick of playing these titles and haven't touched them in years although I did have fun playing these games for this review maybe I just needed a long break [Music] did you know that Nintendo made a rail shooter' app well they did and it's called Pokemon snap you're shooting Pokemon left and shooting them right not with a gun though as that would be impolite this wasn't quite the experience fans wanted to see using the camera to snap pictures of Pokemon wandering free a traditional Pokemon entry fans did one but side games like this is often what they got take pictures of Pokemon for the Pokemon report as you ride your automated buggy around the resort up to sixty different pictures are what you can take but I rarely took more than thirty for efficiency sake after you're done with your ride you will need the aid of the professor to whom you give your photos to grade he checks size pose and if you centered it right give some bonus points if other Pokemon are in there he might the control is good and not at all lame as it's really easy to Center Pokemon in frame later you get apples which can be used as bait this is just to get a better picture not seal their fate you also get a pester ball which brings them out to the paparazzi this is a trick that I learned back when I stuck that creepy Bill Cosby the different areas you explore all look pretty good they kept [ __ ] to a minimum so you can see most of the hood but pop up in the distance mini Pokemon - it looks really ugly kind of like last night's poo I really like the musical soundtrack because it meets my ear but is it rearranged tunes or new stuff I hear I can't tell because I'm not much into the series at all hell this is the game I played most next to pokemon pinball but even if you're a true fan then maybe you should give this game a try because it's really quite good [Music] there were a few Star Wars games on the system but I always liked Rogue Squadron you spend the entire game flying various rebel vehicles on lots of different missions mostly directly over the surface of various planets so if you don't like flying ships and Star Wars games or you want some missions that are on foot this is probably not the best game for you however factor 5 did a great job utilizing the n64 hardware especially if you have an expansion pack installed the game starts you out just six months after the original Death Star has been destroyed and you play as Luke through the majority of the game most levels will let you select from different rebel crafts but I usually choose the x-wing because well come on it's the x-wing it's pretty easy to control you can boost and brake and all that hell you can even roll your ship entirely if you want gameplay usually consists of destroying all of the enemy and often there will be a fragile rebel or civilian thing to defend from the Empire attack as well and yes there are a few escort missions the gameplay isn't perfect but it's good often I found myself blowing up without knowing exactly what caused it and sometimes it's kind of hard to get the enemy in your sights the graphics run an interlaced mode if you have the expansion pack and are really sharp for the console this city however really has a pollution problem kind of looks like this mission takes place in Beijing the framerate certainly isn't the best but it's usually high enough so that you feel like you still have some control over your craft the music is all Star Wars II with original stuff thrown in here and there and it's all done with the n64 s internal synth and it sounds pretty damn good although I like the Gamecube sequel better I do recommend this game but it does get repetitive thankfully you can save your progress one of the other Star Wars games as shadows of the empire from LucasArts at first I didn't like this one very much because the presentation is sloppy and the camera can get really weird trying to trip the at-ats but most people like this one more than Rogue Squadron and honestly I can see why this game takes place during and after the Empire Strikes Back and you don't play as any of the characters from the movie you play as - renderer don't you just love that name - renderer but what sets this one apart is that it's not just flying missions there are a lot of on foot missions and the game flows really well of course there are plenty of stages where you have to fly a ship or other vehicles I haven't played much of it yet but I am really enjoying it so far you just got to be careful because it's really easy to follow up also I don't understand why some of the camera views exist it was an early time for 3d I guess this one uses digitized music from the movies in mono seriously check this one out [Music] [Music] all right we're rolling right along here and we've got a lot of games covered they're all you know there's a lot of good ones in there but I've noticed a serious lack of racing games I mean which we had in the first in 64 episode what's going on here well it's probably because we had them in the first n64 episode but I'm gonna find a way to squeeze him in there 1080 snowboarding was one of the new IPs at the time for Nintendo and it paid off this game packed a lot of tude with edgy music and edgy characters there's more than a few modes for you to play here and they'll keep you busy for quite a while Matt race is a race between you and a computer-controlled character the courses are all long and fun to race on with some great graphics though I always thought it was wrong for this course to have you race on the street and then on grass for a portion of the course it's very unrealistic and would quickly ruin your board there's a trick attack mode where you can race down the same tracks but try to pull off tricks for points and there's a contest mode where you're racing through gates all while trying to pull off tricks for more points and of course what snowboarding game would be complete without a halfpipe this was my favorite a long time ago when my nephew and I would have competitions he always killed me and as obvious as to why if you look at my performance here as you can see I'm not good at this game and never really have been still though I do have a good time and I always aspire to get better [Music] snowboard kids is another game in the genre this one is a bit more cartoony in less serious than 1080 there's a few different modes here that make up the game first off his battle race where you race against three other racers you can also get weapons and use them to help you get the edge although the edgiest I ever got was second place I feel with a bit more practice I could have won them all each race consists of multiple laps yeah I thought doing laps on a snowboarding game was quite weird also at the end of a lap you have to hop on a chairlift which takes you to the top of the mountain for the next lap there's also a skill games mode with three sub games in speed game you have to collect the fans laying around the course that will get you down faster low score is the key here in shot game you have to shoe snowmen for points and every time you shoot us snowman you get more bullets and finally his trick game you have to do tricks on a halfpipe and off of jumps four points I really really sucked at this game overall though this game is generally fun and controls pretty well [Music] rocket robot on wheels released in 1999 was developed by Sucker Punch the same guys who went on to create the Sly Cooper series in this game you controlled the titular robot rocket as he scours her Whoopi land for tickets finding tickets unlocks new areas for rocket to search not only do you find tickets but also tokens these tokens aren't just worthless collectathon crap you use them to buy abilities and of course learning new abilities makes it easier for you to collect those tickets tickets for the most part aren't just lying around for you to collect you have to search them out and this might include doing mundane things like playing tic-tac-toe with the chicken or building a roller coaster which you have to do twice to get two different tickets at least you get to ride the roller coaster after you've created it and that's kind of fun hell let's face it all the tests that you do in this game kind of feel mundane that's not to say that this game isn't enjoyable as I actually had a decent time playing it there's enough to discover here to keep you interested for quite a long time rocket controls pretty well but it would be a lot better if the camera wasn't so wonky it's very unstable and although you have control over it you're gonna be messing around with it a lot oh and if you like xylophones and keyboard music then you're gonna love this soundtrack it has plenty of both and feels totally jazzy give this game a chance you just might like it [Music] [Music] I'm gonna mention waverace 64 Kawasaki jetski given any chance and you're gonna like it this is one of my favorites for the console simply because it's the game that I pull down and played the most often there's no huge quest to get into that takes days and days you can just play for an hour every few months or so and that's awesome this was an early game and it kind of shows but it still plays very well it feels like you're on the waves and of course trying to go to the correct side of each buoy only adds to the fun the announcer is super happy to be here and the music is really happy too this truly is a must-have for the system [Music] [Applause] [Music] and of course we got to mention mario kart 64 really quick we've covered this plenty before so I'll just say that it's a great update to the original game most people like the multiplayer playing with up to four separate individuals at the same time but I always enjoyed the single-player mode a lot as well as always it's really fun and frustrating at the same time this was my favorite mario kart up until the DS version came out definitely check it out unless you're sick to death of Mario and we've also mentioned f-zero X before as well but we've never shown it running as 60 frames per second before and honestly there's not too many games on the console that can claim to do that but this is one of them it's an excellent and challenging game with amazing music even though it's in mono and it sounds fairly compressed there's lots of tracks to race on and stuff to unlock here I really like the way they changed how boosting works as it's tied to your life bar you can boost as much as you want just as long as your bar has life but it drains a little each time of course the life is easy to refill and just as long as you're not too reckless with your driving you should be okay this is another definite must-have for the console [Music] we mentioned road rash 64 briefly over five years ago or was it six I don't know we didn't think much of it but some of you insisted that it was pretty good so I thought I'd take another quick look at it I'm gonna say that at best it's it's okay it doesn't look even 1/10 as good as the proper 32-bit versions compared to the 3do version is kind of like comparing Atari to the NeoGeo and this is the Atari version right here it looks bad gameplay wise though it's not too bad though it's certainly not as tight as the road rash and non 3d games made by EA themselves if you have the expansion pack you get a little bit more horizontal resolution but you'll barely notice at all the game is certainly playable but I'll be sticking with the 3do version probably the most popular games for the system are the two Zelda titles the first one is Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time after seeing how well Mario turned out in 3d I was excited to see how link would make the transition and I wasn't disappointed it's easy to see why this title became an instant classic the game is very good in controlling leak feels very natural in 3d I'll admit it took a bit of time getting used to link jumping automatically when he comes to the edges of platforms but now it just feels right Hyrule looks good in 3d it's a huge world and even though it's pretty sparse in spots it feels very complete not just the overworld but all the dungeons are huge as well and having a fully fledged 3d world the puzzles took on a new level of thought the puzzles in the dungeons were really fun to figure out I actually really liked the story in this game and I loved all the customs that helped piece it together and what Zelda game would be complete without an awesome soundtrack lots of new tunes to go with the ones that we've heard before and they're all completely enjoyable even though it's not my favorite Zelda game is definitely in my top 5 [Music] [Music] next came majora's mask and in this title link leaves and gets caught up in something very crazy the Skull Kid who's a loner in a bully steals Majora's Mask which was used in hexing rituals by an ancient tribe the Skull Kid wears this mask and steals Epona links ocarina and turns link into a Deku after the first 72 hours of gametime everything comes to a head and leek hits his ocarina back and plays the song of time this little trick let's link start the 72-hour clock over again before this big moon crashes into the planet so this is how you play the game accomplish as much as you can in 72 hours and then play the song of time to reset the clock it's simple enough and it works just fine I've got to say that the first time we talked about this game in our other n64 episode I came off rather harshly and said that I don't care for this game because of the clock feature and the masks and all that what I really meant to say is that this is a quality game and Nintendo did a fine job with it but I'm not a big fan of the clock system since you use it all throughout the game it starts to wear out and can be annoying at times in the end is still a good game but as far as Zelda games go as far from my personal favorite [Music] [Music] neon genesis evangelion from Gainax and bandai was only released in japan i don't recall ever seeing the anime but in this game you fight one-on-one with giant mechs in a scenario which reminds me of Ultraman or Godzilla the game doesn't play particularly well and it's brutally difficult even though the only difficulty selection available is the easy mode but the game has an extremely good presentation the visuals are top-notch and really convey lots of excitement likewise the music is really well done and it sounds fantastic it's just too bad that the controls are stiff and all the moves seem timing based almost as if they were based on QuickTime events even though they're not still it's a game to check out if you want to be impressed by the visuals and audio hell maybe you have what it takes for this game [Music] okay quick character mascot rundown beginning with Super Mario 64 this was a launch title and still one of the best games for the console it showed the world that 3d gameplay can be done well all the different environments and tasks for Mario to complete will keep you busy for quite a while [Music] and then there's banjo kazooie from rare this one definitely gives Super Mario 64 a run for its money with a rares usual cheeky humour if you like collecting notes puzzle pieces and other things and you're gonna love this [Music] and let's not forget it sequel banjo tooie all the same moves control and gameplay are here but it seems much slower kind of like the game is struggling to run so far I prefer the first game Donkey Kong 64 is also by rare this game requires and comes with the expansion pack what's cool is that this is one of the very few n64 games that has a proper anamorphic widescreen mode though it awkwardly switches back to four by three for non gameplay scenes the game is pretty slow to start like most rare games are but it has the DK wrap and honestly that's all you need in your life [Music] finally there's Conker's Bad Fur Day by surprise surprise rare it's a great game that was in development hell and it prides itself on being the British version of vulgar it's like being gross yet polite all at the same time there's lots of different types of scenarios to play through here if you're offended by toilet humor stay far far away and maybe play Mario instead but if you liked it be sure to pick up two or three copies because they're super cheap only seventy plus dollars for a card only copy nice [Applause] [Applause] [Music] all right there you have it the n64 part do in the books indeed it was a great episode I thought you really pulled it out strong in the end with some Nintendo and rare love I thought it was good anyways indeed would you guys think of this Nintendo 64 episode do you think it was better than our original have you seen the original Nintendo 64 episode you haven't go back check it out leave us some hateful comments we always appreciate that always and what do you think of the console I mean it's a lot of people's favorite console I think mainly because they grew up with it mm-hmm oh yeah big time and what do you think of 4k video if you're watching it I mean this is I mean the Nintendo 64 it requires quite a video to appreciate and if you watched it in 4k let us know if you didn't anyway what do you think of the Nintendo 64 I believe I've already asked up in the meantime thank you for watching game sack [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] what's up Joe oh hi Dave I'm just admiring when I PlayStation 4 it's a video game system with graphics indiscernible from reality you're kidding right I can't believe you bought this the graphics are so good they require no imagination at all Joe this has got to be the stupidest thing you've buy in your entire life I'm sorry [Music] what is it Joe you know I really don't have time to keep coming over here for this crap all right let me guess you're gonna show me you another new system with real graphics and absolutely no imagination right oh hi Dave no this week I have the Nintendo 64 it's a system which graphics require a comfiest amount of imagination now this is more like it with Nintendo 64's excessive fog and blurry textures you need full imagination to enjoy this Nintendo clearly knows that imagination is the key I'm still not sure what they were imagining when they designed this controller building an active imagination is very healthy so kudos to Nintendo for making everyone's mind extremely fit Joe you are a great friend and I'd like to give you this copy of uncharted 4 for the PlayStation 4 you're not gonna believe the graphics are so realistic [Music]
