don't come on don't be so good don't be so mercenary in crass commercialism here I understand this book is in its fifth printing the first hokage's out this afternoon for the first verse for were blurred were they so no it's an old joke haven't you heard that joke before it's an old old job but you're an old guest so what's the difference we just wrote in it it will be so nice if you weren't here my journey through show business my journey is over well if I may yeah your journey you doesn't say it on here it says my journey which means of course your journey you never read up we now begin by now you're here all the time can I just say one thing first thing I like to say yes would you put the book back up put on yeah I'm gonna get a round of that all right you'll get around to it all right that's that's kind of epitomizes you know to fit um I think you know what Filofax me now I have no idea what final facts you don't know what Filofax epitomized I know what epitomize I don't know final what is epitomized me it's the opposite of Filofax is this gonna be another one of those nights no I I've been on this book tour and and one of the main questions I'm asked is why since he treats you so rudely do I go on the Johnny Carson show you don't treat me that rudely I don't mind rowdy me no no that's the fear that a lot of people do feel I treat you rudely right and you're Berliner when you do and a lot of people feel that you treat me rudely mm-hmm I hear this a lot it's your home thing that's right best always to remember that while you're out here so on so we really don't understand the banter do this well I don't know each other well let's be honest we don't we don't hang out together I've never been out with you socially if you've never invited me to your home now certainly uh and even if you did I would not come I think if we keep the relationship the way it is it's probably best for both of us it's got a mutual the woods not admiration of mutual all or acceptance tolerance yeah you know what tolerance means not really well I say to people if you give me an instance where Johnny Carson is rude to me cuz I don't really feel it I don't know that you do I I mean all this rude not a bit then I was given an instance Oh what what is he the instance was the last time I was on the show you said the book costs how much and it's 1895 and you said that seems like a lot of money for a book and I said well it's my whole life and you said well that would be okay if it was Mother Teresa and that's I guess I did say that I didn't I mean that in a pejorative sense you know what majority means you started that whole thing about it pretty much I meant that she is 1895 you're not as well-known as mother Teresa that's all I was the only are you of course not that might be I don't I don't do this much good work as she does certainly now I certainly don't but I want to thank you for autographing this book I want you to see I just opened this book here you want to see what I saw here in the book I didn't know how to grapple dear Bob thanks for all the help over the past 16 years love Chuck whoo-ha Bob Eubanks he's a very dear friend you didn't bother where did this book come from well not from you evidence well no you didn't buy a book can you haven't read the book either I read the book cover to cover you have yes I have and it's a very very long book three hundred three hundred and eight pages not only one about you you don't mention me a lot in here but you you talk about me briefly nicely - yeah I think you do why is that we never discuss the title would be so nice if you weren't here can we really talk about that well as we tend the stray off I think I have had a reluctance over the years quite honestly I mean ah you have been rude to me on many occasion are just on this sentence but I know you mean it and fun a lot of people don't know that you mean it um but I know you mean it of course you know of course I do and and and and I have been criticized for being rude to you and the reason I've been criticized is that I kind of refused to answer your questions right now it's a game you play right it's a game I play it's just all in fun right now but there's a reason I refuse to answer question why I don't think you're really interested in your questions you're right there see the way you keep a job like this for 28 years you pretend you're interested in every flu meal who comes up that takes a certain amount of acting to tolerate sometimes what goes on here and that's why I get the big big bucks right we have to take a break but we're going to continue this fascinating conversation we'll be back in just a moment I know that you're not the risk of ruining our relationship I'm gonna say I read the book and it's a very amusing book thank you I mean that I see no jokes you thank you very nice a very pleased bluesign sit down yeah now the title it would be so nice if you weren't here that came out of some experience that you had here's what I find difficult about being on the show and doing this you're asking me a question yes basically to explain with the title of the book maze right yes but you know what the title of the book means right no I don't but you read the book yes but I want to pretend you say that that's what I mean it's hard for me to answer a question when you know the answer no I said but is that what is acting is all about yeah but I'm not acting now this is kind of me I should they don't know I was sitting in a I was making a movie with Candice Bergen I'll see if the vital if I don't turn back this way I'll be on armed force of Armed Forces Radio Network all right but you don't mind cuz I bet they didn't we talk to those people are your well we were making a movie with are we making a movie with Candice Bergen in a castle outside of London and we were sitting in a little room off the main hall where they were setting up the cameras and an English woman who I think owned the castle came in and and said did someone ask you to wait in here and I said no and she said it would be so nice if you weren't here now that's what you call a scrape right yes I mean later when you sweeten it in their execution when we punch it up but is it alive and we won't have a chance the editing room to do that I never die the way it goes here we don't don't edit this yeah but I would rather you tell the story since it's your crowd you know all right don't so the next question you ask me you answer it now the reason I called the book it would be so nice if you weren't here as the book is about dealing with rejection and surviving when you deal with a lot of difficult problems like a stone wall like a lack of acceptable and what do you do when people are really like just kind of looking at you like this you know what do you do when here what do you do when you're talking to a man that has a picture of himself as a young boy in front of that why do you do that what if I had a picture of myself as a young boy as I saw it what is that so terribly insecure aren't you you got the picture of the young boy I don't know that he would call me I don't have the picture now why do you do that there's a picture of a teenager set of you sitting in a cop I didn't even know was there you did know your witness why don't you tell some of these other hysterical anecdotes that are in the book you had it's about your careers about all about its rejection and oil promising and you know and it says you and I both know there been there been many years when I've you know been banned from this show let's be honest them and many more to come right that's another story what do you mean there were year now you see that people think when you say that you have never banned from this show I actually got a telegram from you telling me that the door was closed off get out I was I see they don't buy that with finish you know I was on radio Teran in about five years when you were like skyrocketing with every don't buy the story they don't buy that story at all they don't you being bad noisy you pushing an eyepin fan from most everywhere three years yeah and and I thank you and uh and the book is about what you do and you're banned you're rejected well you're a generous one awful were you not thrown off you had a job at candy I am hired three times off candid camera uh the the last time was Allen Funt asked me to close down the men's room at JFK Airport and I said I don't think that was a good idea when people come off a plane they're not looking for a laugh you know I mean you were supposed to be out like oh really we went to JFK we I said don't do this he said do it you work for me and we shut down the men's room and people came off and went into the men's room and there wasn't anything there but a fake door and you know and then eventually after by the couple I say it's candid camera and they almost killed me yeah give me gonna photo they didn't think that would you think it was funny to run off the plane you don't want to go on with probably no oh and and there's a curtain and it's a fake door and he fired me and I said it I didn't say anything I just left by that time been fired several times what was the lowest point in your life other than earlier tonight taking my joke oh you know I'm trying to move it sorry Louis money high life you mean in show business sure there's no way look textile business a part-time course in show business what else have you done well there are there are things other than show business people have what I think so well done out light of it well I've lived outside of this was a low point when we were living God the lowest point in my life when I was living outside of showbiz is well outside of show outside of showbiz I'll answer that question if you'll answer that question sure okay what was the lowest point in your life your personal life well I had a showbiz when I first got divorced your first time mm-hmm and that was the hardest time yeah see I wouldn't reveal anything that first see look at look at that look how they're booing you this is our that that's that's nothing this is sweeps week so you'll really reveal course right or ratings I will go through my whole life yeah why I I - it was very very depressed when you were divorced because you know yeah if you've never been divorced a guy you've never been divorced uh well you have I didn't know that I didn't say that no but I can tell you pick you up errantly you have this your second marriage you're on I mean you're on you're currently you're currently in your second marriage I would guess by the way you I'm hesitated when I said you but you didn't answer I I have a two-year-old son I'll alert the media what the minute there's only your first one are you secondly it's for my present wife okay well you've answered the buzz but the lowest point of my life is probably still to come and I haven't all looked forward to that we'll take a break but we're coming right back
