Are we right to dismiss astrology?

well an interview with the Conservative MP David Trudeau neck has been published in the astrological journal the MP is quoted as saying I do foresee that one day astrology will have a role to play in health care and he also suggests that opposition to astrology is based on superstition ignorance and Prejudice including racial prejudice of course astrology is very ancient practice dating back 4000 years at least Mesopotamia and is still widely respected and used in India China Japan the Catholic Church however banded as a divination and in contradiction to God's gift of free will are we right to dismiss astrology well Shri Patman and Wales Ganesh temple central to Hinduism isn't it so do you make decisions on the basis of your astrological chart and so forth yeah we can take decision according to the horoscope charge it it doesn't mean you have to take decision according the horoscope sure it will help you to take the decision it will make make your life easy to take to take the decisions onion in your life say em they're examples a you just finished your study or say you're going to choose their studies and you are confused what you won't study in that case like you can use your horoscope to to take the decisions what do you want to study say which in which topic you will be am easy to stereo which way you can take the paths on your life say say if you want to study medicine or do you want to study engineering or in which way or which industry will be easier for you to study or carry on your life I understand so you would take the advice of a negative decision if it's at your own medicines maybe not for you you would perhaps steer clear of that yeah horoscope can and tell you exactly I'm going to change your mind yeah can I change your mind yeah you can change your mind oh you're changing your mother but it the horoscope but it's not saying if you study medicine you're not going to do it but everything else II what is called say you go into school but if you don't take exams you're not going to pass or fail yeah but you can try it yeah it is up to the up to the personal decisions but if you're going to use the horse if you use the horoscope it will tell you that if you study medicine it'd be easier or harder I understand if you I just want to say what while we have the time you know we have a lot of people on here discussing a lot of different things and sometimes people come on for example and discuss homeopathy we have that debate recently they claim there is science behind it what is behind this what's the do you believe the science what's the theory what's going on light beams or ember what is it yeah say em in her they say in this place and at this second the planets in the space they're producing the waves the energy that energy make a certain kind of vibration or in this in this place is make the vibration so if you go to move to laser London is going to be different vibration in this atmosphere if you move to the China is going to be a different vibration so that then the baby born in this vibration that baby's mental and the physical body is get used to the vibration so when it gets changed there because of the movements of planets and then movements of planets when it's the vibration to change their the babies or the person or that lives body and mental is fine difficult to add up that vibe the new vibration okay so I said the astrology basically want their life that's the science behind it remember hope your father your grandfather was a notable strong astronomy not astrology astronomy he studied the science of space you heard that there I kind of don't buy it I'm afraid and the reason is because the the star signs they're an accident in the sense that they're not actual cohesive units in space and I think we've got astronomy here will confirm this but it's just the way they look at them in a million years time all the star signs will look different because they're all moving relative to each other also dark matter the universe apparently is about 90 to 95 percent dark matter so 19 out of 20 bits of mass if you like in the universe aren't even catered for by astrology house on I was one time talking to an astrologer and said okay tell me about my future and she said well this year two years ago it was this year you're going to travel a lot I said yes we're on a ship you didn't really need to be an astrologer to work that out and and and if it was a proper science it would make measurable predictions it doesn't it's a lot of fun it doesn't harm people but I wouldn't bet the farm on it like I said Sarah as astronomer Sarah Jaffa you can understand that can't you why hundreds of years ago people know thousands of years ago with hundreds of years ago no light pollution people looked up at the sky and thought that's the that's the guiding light for our lives that's determining so much of what happens on earth and what you make of astrology did people ever say to you in it are you an astrologer well people do often get the two terms name astronomer astrologer they sound very similar and people who aren't in those fields it can be hard to distinguish I think the sky is such a beautiful thing and in the past when there was less electrician as he said it would have been even more so and I can see the fascination with it I see that today you know if I'm cycling home late at night I will stop and look at the stars because it is it is beautiful and I like looking at the constellations Orion is my favorite finding around makes me happy that's all good I think the problem comes between describing astrology as a science there are various definitions of Sciences to do with you know logical processes logical reasoning testing falsifiability astrology does not pass those tests it is it could be described as a religion or a faith or a set of beliefs or a way of deciding your life many people look for guidance in their lives in different ways through religion or through you know throwing a dice to decide what to do tomorrow basing your life decisions if you're not sure about something looking for guidance in astrology might help you make that decision it could be like tossing coin to you know when it falls you know what you really wanted to see hmm I think calling it science and suggesting that it should be useful on the NHS is a very dangerous suggestion LLC astrologist an astrologer as well to some very significant people or you know you advise a lot of top people I do you know I do I have clients that are barristers consultants I have clients that are in various other professional jobs and at the end of the day I always tell them what I will find and what I tell them whether it's a psychic we doing or whether it's partly astrology but I also do tell them that they have free will when they walk out of the door and I do actually and this is a rarity for me agree with the Tory MP that it is a form of discrimination to dismiss other people to dismiss other people's faiths and beliefs and quite frankly if we were all more tolerant and respected other people's faiths and beliefs then we would have a lot more peace in this world whether you want to call it a science or not is up to you but you believe it I mean can't believe it because what a capricorns like capricorns are very grounded people they're always very shrewd in work and money the capricorns I know are all usually high fliers there are a lot of capricorns are self-made millionaires you'll find libras there the scales of justice a significantly significant studies that show the time where you born can make a difference but there is no scientific study whatsoever that shows that is anything to do with the position of the planets extrasensory perception if we go down that path now you're talking I think it's a very dangerous idea that we shouldn't discriminate between different ideas you should never discriminate against people but of course you should discriminate against different ideas some ideas are true some aren't and with the NHS case we're talking about spending public money of course we shouldn't spend public money when when budgets are tight on things that are completely ideas for everything should be up for debate yes of course and this idea that because you can't disprove something therefore it must be true well I can't disprove that there aren't fairies at the bottom of my garden does that mean I should just accept that they're down there fairies fairies Oh fairies right thanks where you live or yeah absolutely if anybody wants to come and see me they can at the end of the day what the Tory MP said about the NHS and bringing in things like astrology and other alternative therapies may take pressure off nurses and doctors I absolutely agree because there are certain holistic therapies that could work and we need to give credit to how hard of the people in the NHS work to make our country
