A Homemade Compact Survival Kit

hi folks often on this channel i'm reviewing off-the-shelf survival kits that are made by someone else and i've had some viewers ask me if i could show you some homemade survival kits and so this is one of my homemade survival kits and it happens to be my favorite homemade kit and so we're going to check it out today on kit bashed survival [Music] so i feel i should clarify that last statement i said this is my favorite homemade survival kit but i've got a lot of homemade survival kits and the ones that are larger and more complete than this start to get into survival bag territory but as far as compact survival kits this is my favorite homemade version obviously it doesn't have everything you could possibly need in a survival situation because of its size but also considering its size it's got a lot of stuff now i've actually shown a version of this kit on this channel already in a previous video i reviewed a small grenade style survival kit the kit itself wasn't very good but at the end of the video i repacked it into this tin and i added a whole bunch of extra stuff to make it pretty good but since then i've modified the kit i've removed some stuff and added other stuff and so it's a little bit different than it was at the end of that video all right so let's check out this kit and i don't know if you can hear in the video but there is a big thunderstorm raging outside it's kind of relaxing anyway the tin itself is made by best glide asc and you can get these tins on amazon i think they're about 15 bucks this is my favorite survival tin because it's well made and it also closes up nice and tight with these clamps now i added a ranger band around the outside just to add a little extra tension because i do have this thing filled to the brim anyway go ahead and pull the ranger band off and open the kit and there we go so here's the underside of the lid and by the way the tin and the lid are made from aluminum or as the british would say aluminium so there's a rubber gasket on the underside of the lid for waterproofing but if you wanted to you could remove that gasket and use the lid as a frying pan or something like that then we've got this essie knives survival card and it's got some unit conversions some survival tips and some ground to air distress signals and stuff like that i've got about a million of these because anytime you buy anything from essie they put a bunch of these with the product so i figured why not put one in this kit and then i've got some paracord and this is 275 paracord 15 feet of it 275 paracord is half the strength of 550 so this will support 275 pounds i used to have 550 paracord in this kit but i replaced it with the 275 because it took up less space and allowed me to add more gear to the kit so it's not quite as strong as 550 paracord but because i get to have more gear in the kit i felt it was worth the sacrifice then i've got a roll of gauze and this could also double as tinder in a pinch we've got some duct tape a couple feet of it and a pack of mre tissues this could be used for toilet paper or tissues or what have you then i've got this container so let's go ahead and open it up and see what's inside alright so i've got two trick birthday candles i've got some thread and a needle right here i've got one two mini glow sticks i've got two waterproof storm matches there then i've got six regular matches and then i think there's two bobby pins yeah here's one and then there's the other so two bobby pins and then here's a match striker surface for those matches i've got a little led flashlight so this has a momentary action or you can flip the switch and keep it on then we've got some coffee tasters choice that's a luxury item got a book of matches then i've got a mini fishing kit it's got some fishing line some hooks and some weights and swivels and a couple of safety pins as well i've got a length of jute twine which can be used for tinder got a little swiss army knife this is the victorinox classic with the stay glow scales that glow in the dark and of course the classic has the scissors the knife the nail file with the flathead screwdriver and then the toothpick and the tweezers i love these things then i've got another beverage we've got some mre beverage based lemonade then i've got the main knife in the kit which is another victoria knox knife this is the one-handed trekker i believe so it's got the main blade that locks [Music] got some serrations on the blade too and then it's got the bottle opener with a flathead screwdriver the can opener with a flathead screwdriver a saw and these victorinox saws are excellent [Music] a phillips head screwdriver a punch and then of course the toothpick and tweezers so that's the victorinox one-handed trekker then we've got a first aid kit and i've got a bunch of stuff in here so let me open this up so first i've got some medicines i've got this little bag that has six ibuprofens and two benadryls then i've got two imodiums just in case of diarrhea and then we've got a whole bunch of other stuff in here let's see i've got a two by two gauze a large band-aid got one two three three regular band-aids although these are pretty large as well some hand sanitizer which could double as a fuel source in a pinch a sterile alcohol wipe some butterfly closures and then a sterile scalpel blade oh i missed one of the band-aids so there are four of the normal size band-aids up next we've got a wire saw with a ranger band around it then i've got another large ranger band and on the inside of that i've got a mini big lighter then i've got two jolly ranchers for a little bit of sugar and energy and a morale boost got some tinfoil a couple sheets of tin foil these are 12 by 12 sheets then i've got a water straw so this is an aqua mira frontier emergency filter and you connect the straw to the filter like that and you've got a survival straw and this will filter up to 30 gallons of water pretty cool then i've got a mini pack towel these are the ones you put a little bit of water on and they blow up into a towel got a little button compass i've got a one liter whirl pack stand up water bag [Music] i've got a signal mirror it's not a very fancy signal mirror but it'll do there's a pencil [Music] then there's a ferro rod and striker pretty good let's see then we've got an emergency bivvy sack which is always a good thing to have this is made out of that mylar trash bag material kind of like a space blanket i'm not going to unfold this because i would never get it refolded but there it is and then we've got an actual space blanket [Music] 52 by 82 so that's two shelter elements in this kit which i think is pretty darn good got some waterproof paper to go with that pencil i've got two molida coffee filters to help filter out sediment from water before it's purified then i've got some snare wire it's about 10 feet of snare wire a whistle and then there's a piece of fat wood to help in building a fire now i think there's some water purification tablets in here too maybe i missed them they might be in the first aid kit let me check oh yeah here they are totally missed those not sure how but i've got six water purification tablets and they will purify one liter of water per tablet all right so here's all the gear laid out we've got the tin and the lid the coffee the lemonade the mre tissues two jolly ranchers the one liter stand up water bag the mini pack towel the first aid kit that's got the medications the bandages the water purification tablets the hand sanitizer and the scalpel blade roll of gauze which could double as tinder the frontier water straw and two molita coffee filters the signal mirror the compass the flashlight the victorinox classic and the victorinox one-handed trekker the 15 feet of 275 paracord this little plastic tube container the fishing kit the needle and thread the bobby pins the mini bic lighter a matte striker surface two storm matches and six regular matches two trick candles one piece of fat wood some jute twine two ranger bands the se survival card the ferro rod and striker the matchbook two mini glow sticks the duct tape pencil and paper tin foil whistle snare wire the wire saw with ranger band space blanket and the emergency bivvy bag so yeah quite a lot of gear for a kit this size i'm very happy with it now obviously there's not much room to add anything else but i will add one more thing for the time being and only because it's something that i thought was already in there so to the first aid kit i'm gonna add this little pack of antibiotic ointment and one more thing i would like to add one of these days is some sunscreen if i could find some sunscreen in packets about this size i would add one of those as well so let's see if we can get all this stuff back in the kit and then we'll call it a day [Music] well it took a little bit of work but i got it all back in there it is really tight there's lots of stuff in there so this is my current favorite homemade compact survival kit and as i've said in many of my videos none of my survival kits are ever written in stone the contents will change and evolve and improve over time and that's because my knowledge of survival kits and my preferences for what goes into them changes and evolves over time so you know if you see this kit a year from now it may have some different gear in it and that's the fun of doing this you get to change things over time and make them better anyway that about wraps it up for now let me know what you think
