SPECIAL PRAYER EVENT: Pray for Ukraine With CBN's George Thomas

hello my name is dan andros i'm a managing editor here at cbn news and i am honored uh to be with you today for this very special prayer event uh for ukraine going to be george joined here in a minute by cbn's senior international correspondent george thomas who has been in ukraine reporting now for a couple weeks since the build-up uh of this war and then now the launching of this war he's been there doing incredible reports on the ground um and so we're going to talk to him in just a moment we're also going to be joined by ukrainian pastor vladimir bielik and he's a pastor in ukraine and so what we're going to do here today is we have the opportunity as believers to gather and pray for the people of ukraine and obviously as christians we know the power of prayer prayer is essential to the christian life and so um we believe in the power of prayer and so we believe something like this is incredibly essential and it's incredibly important and so you know paul tells us to pray without ceasing and so that is what we are going to do here we're going to continue to pray and we are going to lift up our prayers to the lord and so a lot of times society will will mock prayer and say oh well you're only offering your thoughts and prayers but when when you know you are praying to the god of the universe the god who holds the stars in his hands the god who is sovereign over we know that prayer is powerful and it is meaningful and so we also want to pray informed and so that's what we're going to do here now we're going to bring in george thomas and we're going to bring in the pastor and talk to them here for a few minutes and get an idea of what's going on so that we as christians can have our prayers be informed so george pastor vladimir thanks so much for being here it's a pleasure and honor thank you so much i'm honored also to join pastor volotomir uh here in la viv he's a major christian leader in the country and also here in la vie so it's a pleasure to be with all of you gentlemen george let's start with you here before we get to the pastor let's just talk about where the war stands right now what is the situation on the ground we've seen so much misinformation so much information flowing uh you've been there you you have your finger on the pulse of what's going on what can you tell people about the latest needs and situations yeah so the latest yeah thank you dan the latest today is that uh russia had agreed in essence uh to uh to a ceasefire that would allow residents of the city of mariopol which is in the southeastern part of the country i think we have a map if you look at the map of ukraine and you go just you know you look at southeast which is basically on the black sea close to the sea of azov it's a major major port it's one of the largest posts ports you see right there right next to crimea well in the last three days mario paul has come under intense shelling in fact i have a contact uh pastor pastor gennady mokneko who is who lives in mario poll and he has been his entire town is is completely surrounded by russians and they are under intense bombardment and so the russians had agreed to a ceasefire to allow a humanitarian corridor that would in essence allow residents of mariopol to get out and the ceasefire time was agreed upon and then when that cease-fire time came the russians continued to shell and so my understanding as we come on the air is that uh folks who did manage to get out of mario paul have actually gone back into murder poll because it is unsafe it is very dangerous and uh and and and the shelling continues if you look at the map today herson uh has fallen into the hands of the russians it is their first major city that they've taken again it's a strategic town it's right next to a city rather right next to odessa and the reports are that russian warships have left the port of crimea and are headed to odessa and the residents of odessa i've got contacts in odessa as well they are preparing for a full-scale invasion of the russians from the sea uh so odessa is in the crosshairs of the russians today if you look at a map further if you pull out there you see to the to the northeast of the country another city that has come under intense bombardment uh this past week in fact the equivalent of the city hall uh in harcave in downtown harca freedom square and and incidentally i have been on that very spot on that very freedom square several years ago russia launched a huge missile to the heart of that building and destroyed it and today they are trying to lay siege to to to we pull out the map again and we look at the city of kiev which is all eyes is on kiev the capital city uh right now the russians are to the northeast to the north and to the northwest and they have still day eight day nine into this they have yet to lay complete siege on the on the capital city the ukrainians continue to put up a huge resistance uh around the perimeter of the of the capital city so as we stand as we look at the broader map of of ukraine since the russian invasion you've got kiev you've got you've got obviously donetsk and luhansk in the east and then you've got mario paul down to the south to the crimea odessa and uh and and her son uh so so the russians continue to make their moves the uh ukrainians are dug in and uh this is going to be uh you know this is this for ukrainians this is they're going to fight to the last drop of blood that is in their body and and everyone that i've spoken to in the last three weeks uh have said that today i took a trip early this morning to an undisclosed location i will not tell you where i went uh for security purposes uh but i drove out of the city and uh we were on the road for about three hours and i can tell you i saw so many checkpoints around my my my location and not only that once you leave the main road of this particular place i was going to there are so many side roads that go to small villages here in in in ukraine and every one of those roads to the village then they have put up sand bags they have put up uh concrete uh slabs of barricades and at each one of those posts i probably saw more than a dozen at each one of those posts there were civilians uh civilians not military civilians ordinary men and women ukrainians who were holding in my opinion they were ak-47s they were others kinds of weapons but it was local residents of that particular village of those villages that were protecting uh their their community uh even here in the western part of the country uh the sense that i have is that ukrainians are preparing for battle uh as they are preparing for battle in the east and in the capital city and uh and and they are fully engaged and they are ready for the potential uh i say of urban warfare wow yeah that definitely gives you a good sense of what is going on there and uh let's bring in pastor vladimir here again appreciate you joining us and as george was just talking about there citizens are rallying and i think that's been something that has inspired a lot of people around the world to see these ukrainians standing up for their country can you talk to us a little bit about um you know how how your congregation is doing how are how are people doing that you've talked to and that you have interacted with and and first of all how are you doing in all of this and then how's your flock doing uh we'd love to get a sense for how we can pray for the body of christ over there in ukraine thank you thank you for your support and praying it was it was a shock you know so it's hard to evaluate what really are everything you know like our feeling and everything is changing every day like we try to be um to be ready to serve a lot of people who are refugees now like our church and located on west ukrainian it's live city its main big city like cultural capital of ukrainian very patriotic city and of course a lot of people going here from east and central ukrainian and the first like i would say we have uh several stages of understanding what is going on the first one is news you know when you see news you understand wow it's happening right now next stage when you see a lot of refugees where they came and you see like desperate and fear and their eyes so and it's in our stage when you realize what is going here but and and step by step we're more and more involved in everything what's happening like in our church we change all our rooms as a place for refugees so where we can come and have a rest and sleep and food and also we give them information about next stage where we could go as a refugee have to get to the border with europe and what's next stage so it's a lot of work and right now we are getting exhausting in this area in this sense because like people come you all day and night you know so somebody came just at night and somebody goes by car to pick them up from the rail station because we are tired we spend a lot of time without good sleeping so we try to help them so it's a lot of of caring which church and mission provides for refugee right now like it's uh amazing what's the church do together and a lot of volunteers and mission together absolutely and i just want to mention too while you're talking about all that help and that is incredible to see um you all opening up your homes and shifting their your focus um but that is a great need that we will pray for here in a few minutes just for you guys and your energy and to be able to keep it up and to keep going because it's a it's obviously a draining both emotionally and physically of a situation but i wanted to mention cbn's operation blessing is on the ground there you can text ob crisis to 71777 so in addition to our prayers that we are going to offer today here in a few minutes you can tangibly also help and you know help as they're distributing food kits bottled water electrical generators fuel etc to ukrainians need to assist um what the pastor was just talking about these efforts here from the churches and from others so you can text ob crisis to 717 um george you you've seen a lot of that on the ground as well yourself these ukrainians sort of banded together can you speak a little more to that yeah you know it's it's incredible i um just this week i met a young girl 22 years old who in essence she had three girls three young ladies who escaped from kiev this week and she practically open she opened her home uh to these three strangers and and they're sting just as pastor vladimir said they're staying in her home right now and they don't know how long dan they're going to stay uh obviously so many are uh trying to get to either poland to hungary uh to moldova uh but just keep in mind i i interviewed these three ladies and and they they in essence had to run they they just grabbed what they had on their back the clothes on their back they grabbed their documents and they left their homes and they made this epic journey west out of kiev what should typically take you know about five and a half hours drive time from keeve all the way to la vie uh took two three days because they had to go through multiple checkpoints they had to backtrack because there was you know there was shelling or there was an explosion and so so just imagine this is the if you can just think of for a moment this is a major country a major city in the heart of europe in the 21st century that we are seeing the biggest exodus of of people the reports are more than a million people have have escaped from the central and the eastern part of the country but you know the beautiful thing is that uh the folks in la viv they've just opened up your you know they shelters there's i think about 5 000 shelters in the city you're looking at images from the art palace a historic building here in la vie it's a 32 000 square foot auditorium theater and they turned it into a an aid hub for people you see the church that's pastor vladimir's church they're bringing in mattresses uh every every inch of his church all the available office space has been turned into uh into a place for for refugees so it's um you know to see the folks in la vie and other parts of the western part of where ukraine really step up to this to strangers they're really banding together uh in unprecedented ways offices uh restaurants i've been i've i've seen it restaurants here office spaces uh gymnasiums schools uh colleges uh uh jewish synagogues uh they've all been turned into um these temporary shelters uh for for for people and uh and uh it's just it's remarkable it really is you see that fighting spirit because on one hand dan it reminds me of of of jeremiah you know when jeremiah was called to rebuild the walls of jerusalem he posted men on the walls of jerusalem and there was one person who was there with a sword with a spear with a weapon and then there was one person who was there to to to fill in any gaps uh on the wall in case there was a piece of the wall that fell that person would represent building the wall up so it's the same thing the same picture here for for for for ukrainians they have a weapon in one hand and at the same time they're they're meeting the spiritual and the physical needs of their countrymen because they know they're in the middle of a war so in the middle of the war they have to not only defend their territory defend their cities defend their homes at the same time they have to provide shelter provide food and and essential supplies to those who are in the middle caught in the crossfire having to escape all right if you're just joining us we're trying to give you a sense i know that all of you who signed up to be here today want to pray for ukraine are praying for ukraine and the response is incredible to be honest with thousands of you write in with your prayers um and just prayer after prayer of people praying for ukraine um i'm just reading i've got a whole list here there's a whole bunch of them just people it's just like a never-ending lesson seems i just keep scrolling through so that's really great because you can really feel in these situations and pastor maybe you can uh testify to this uh or um but you can feel prayers from the world and from when you have a larger body of people praying for it really resonates and you really can feel it and so as we're going through this information to help inform you on how to pray for the people of ukraine pastor i want to ask you um you know you mentioned the exhaustion you mentioned just the the you know kind of that physical ability to keep on going and keep going strong keep helping people uh you know through lack of sleep and worry and whatever else might be emerging what are what are some of the other top things that people specifically can be praying for for you your church and for the people of ukraine i want to give like big bigger perspective what's going on here you know it's not just a small conflict here like i think it's a crucial um time for all europe and it could be interested all the world like what is going on ukrainians wants to be independent country and we fight for this for a long period of time and to hear gospel we have a lot of freedom for gospel in our country so we we have good relationship between different denomination and something great happen here like like some some way of revival uh we we feel that it should start in in in next years and what is going on i think that uh this war it's the attack against freedom against truth because uh what is going on on russia we have a lot of elimination for preaching gospel and also even for speaking truth in any sense of this meaning you know so what we want to invade here we want to make the same here so that's why we fighting for the freedom and for for continue to preach gospel and for me i think it will be a time when russia really needs change also and this war probably will shake russia ideology and and very perspective how we see everything you know because mostly it's built on life and they feel uh in this light and like normal and they need to to be open so what i want you to pray and support us we really it's not we not just praying about peace you know we don't want just peace we want a freedom and we want uh victory because it's not fight about uh our borders or just homes it's five for for the truth and for the freedom and we really want this victory because it's not just victory for ukraine and we we see this that russian people is on like we are not free because of system like regime in this their country so we understand that something needs to be changed not just for ukrainian it's it's uh it will take effect on many countries and nation around ukraine so please it's hard to to fight our army probably 12 times less when russia and we planned this for long years ago so it's not equal power but we see a lot of miracles right now because like i think everyone is is really impressed at how ukrainians fight for their freedom and i i think we should pray about this level like that this victory should change everything in in this area not just in ukrainian but for in our countries we really wants to the door opens door for revival for me it's look like again like like system as it was in soviet union should be broken again so you know so it's what we what we should focus our prayer about uh for falling of this regime and we we believe that revival will come for uh russia and ukraine also and it will take effect in the around house yeah yeah that's a great answer hey thank you so much for that perspective george i was just going to ask you to get i wanted to get your reaction to that yeah yeah it's powerful you know i hope you didn't just say uh he he he not only asked for peace for for ukraine but he asked for a collapse of the soviet communistic philosophy that rules russia today and just like he said i think it's profound just like the fall of communism you know it was vladimir putin who said that the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century uh in his opinion was the collapse of the soviet union you know you and i would say the collapse of the soviet union was an incredible moment in our history but to vladimir putin he thought he thinks it was the greatest catastrophe and i think what you are seeing today just as pastor of valor damir said i there needs to be a second coming down of communism today there needs to be another collapse of the soviet system of the communist system today in russia and i think what you are seeing uh you know just just uh two days ago russia's duma the equivalent of congress or the parliament they passed a very controversial law and in essence this law says that if you use the word war to describe russia's action against ukraine using the word war you can spend up to 15 years in prison they said choose to if any russian person was to say that russia needs to be sanctioned that can also land you uh behind bars today facebook twitter instagram abc cbs bbc other top western uh media companies have left russia because of this new law and you are seeing these widespread protests around russia where thousands upon thousands of russians are boldly taking to the streets and saying no to this war and thousands of them are being arrested so so it's so important that as we pray for ukraine that just as pastor vladimir said that we need to pray for russia a collapse of the soviet communist empire mentality that is in putin's mind it really is it's palpable there is a map guys if you can go to it if you look at the map of europe and you look at the nato countries people will say you know people will say well why should i care about what's going on in ukraine uh but if you look at that map right there all those purple countries guys are nato countries the only country that's that this that one country that stands between nato europe and western democracy is ukraine and now and ukraine is right in the middle between russia and nato just imagine if russia were to completely take all of ukraine they would be on the borders of romania hungary slovenia poland uh uh slovakia lithuania estonia do you think vladimir putin will stop at ukraine absolutely not because he wants to reconstitute the the not only the ussr but the entire russian empire so americans watching this will say well why should we care look at that map that's why you should care that's why we should care and and spiritually it is it's about you know it's about asking god to move powerfully in the nation of russia and today just as ukraine is in this tremendous upheaval ukraine's neighbor to the east russia is in tremendous upheaval today and there is a convulsion that's taking place you see it people are nervous people are trying to escape russia today they're trying to get out of the country by land by sea by air because there is a convulsion taking place so it's a monumental moment it really is and i know all the focus is on ukraine but but but we need to broaden that out to ask god that his holy spirit would invade russia in a powerful way and that god would would intervene in the hearts and minds from the kremlin all the way down that the lord jesus christ would touch russians today by the tens of thousands across that country all right yeah george powerful stuff there as well and it's amazing too when i think about it you have people today in america who are pushing socialism or you know communism light policies and ideas here in america and my ukrainian friends at uh my church here at home watch this and they shake their heads and say i i went away we our families left that on purpose because of exactly this and exactly what you guys are talking about and so they're shaking their heads to see some of those ideas start to um spawn here but um why don't george i want to toss it to you how about we start um praying now i think we've we've given people a very good baseline here with information on everything that's going on and um why don't you uh why don't you kick off prayer here and we will uh we will do that and for everyone watching if you want to ask a question we'll take a look and see if we can field any questions afterwards potentially here if the connections are still good i know we're uh you guys are over in ukraine skype's holding up and our connection's holding up so that's good so far but i want to definitely get to that prayer while we can sure yeah i'm going to pray specifically and maybe we can just go through these prayer points right so i i just feel a burden to pray for the church uh here in ukraine uh you know many of you know this but ukraine today is eastern europe and central asia's largest missionary sending country keep that in mind ukraine ukraine is sending the most number of missionaries uh in all of central europe as well as central asia which is powerful and just as pastor volodymyr said the church is on fire today in ukraine uh because after 30 years of of freedom they have enjoyed this religious freedom where there is the freedom to preach the gospel and to proclaim it and and and and and the the opposite if russia were to completely take over the country the the prospects for religious freedom would be horrendous it would be terrible so i'm just going to pray right now for the church in ukraine as it continues to stand against the the tsunami of evil that has come against its nation uh i'm going to stand so will you join me right now wherever you are uh in the world whether in the united states in ukraine in africa wherever you are let's join our hearts together and pray for the nation of ukraine and for the church uh today in ukraine father we thank you lord uh the church in ukraine is on fire they have experienced the tremendous move of your holy spirit i think of pastor bolovir's church and the powerful worship time that we had last sunday and lord the proclamation of the gospel lord to see the church come alive in the middle of a war the lord is tremendous thousands of christians who are linking arms and meeting the needs of their fellow countrymen so lord i pray for pastor bologna i pray for his entire staff i pray for the churches here in the western part of ukraine who have suddenly been dealt with the situation of a humanitarian crisis lord i pray that you would give them the spiritual strength i pray that you would give them the resources that they need in order to continue to meet the physical needs the immediate physical needs of their countrymen lord i pray for wisdom in the days and weeks ahead lord how to strategize how to be more effective lord i pray for unity a greater unity a lord i hear this again and again this last three weeks that i've been here i i hear so many ukrainians say to me that vladimir putin not only wanted to try to conquer our country but he wanted to divide us and this has done just the exact opposite ukrainians are united like never before and today the church is united like never before and so i pray lord that you would keep that unity in the church strong that differences and and divisions and all of those things would be completely lord uh dispelled in the name of jesus lord and that you would bring the churches together of one voice and lord as they partner with their jewish brothers and sisters and the ukrainian orthodox church lord and other uh groups and other religious faiths lord that that the body of christ and those in the religious faith community lord would be able to communicate lord just the strength of this nation so pray lord your continued blessing upon the church give them boldness lord i've met so many christians a lord who are just filled with boldness they are ready to defend their country they're ready to meet the needs of their fellow countrymen even under the weight of this war their faith has been so inspiring to me so father i pray that you would continue to give them the physical strength to maintain and to continue in the days and weeks ahead lord protect the church protect the church buildings lord i pray for your blessing and protection of the pastor volodymyr's church his actual church structure the lord i pray for the other churches around the country oh lord i pray i can think of pastor gennady and mario paul i think of pastor anton in lord huge church there in the south northeastern part of the country lord and other evangelical churches that are under this tremendous strain lord give them the strength give them the wisdom lord give them the boldness to continue to preach the love of jesus christ lord in the midst of this war in jesus name amen amen and jesus we just um in the midst of all this uh we would just pray and and and i love pastor vladimir's perspective on just putting the gospel first we would just pray that in spite of our needs we pray for our needs to be met but ultimately that your name would be made great that souls would be saved and we know that um uh having faith and seeking you and pointing people to you in the most trying of times lord jesus is very very powerful and one of the ways that you draw people to yourself and so um we would just pray that your will be done and that your name would be made great in the midst of all this we pray for strength for george there in ukraine at reporting we pray for pastor vladimir and all the pastors in ukraine and the and the christians and brothers and sisters there working to spread the gospel uh in the midst of a trying trying incredibly trying time so we lift all this up in your mighty name jesus amen amen pastor uh pastor vladimir i throw this out here um would you like to close us in prayer and but maybe pray in ukrainian for everyone i thought that might be something here uh that would be uh worth doing what do you think okay i will i will want to ask about one more prayer and i will pray a little bit ukrainian and translate to english so great we really we really want to pray about miracle for ukrainian you know we really need miracle we see a lot of uh miracles right now but i mean what like when it's the miracle for victory when we need miracle for a lot of people which i'm personally you know we are black now in the eastern south ukrainian you know so some of them hiding and without food or electricity of and it's danger to go out because of invaders there and bombing and so it's really i um sometimes i have no connection with them because they lost the likes of connection and it's hard to know that somebody right now he is isolated and not secure and the way with their families with kids and we have no way to to escape this right now and we don't know how long it will be like that you know unsecure like i know christian in in somewhere in kharkov in melee topol in her son right now novaka hokkai and a lot of these places so i want you to pray about miracle for everyone who who christ stood to god in their situation in the their location god could provide miracle for everyone who will ask so let's pray about this yes yes i lord we are praying about your miracle for all our nation for our president for our government for our army and for everyone who are in different heart situations hard times everyone who is praying right now and will praying during this period i want to ask you with many people give them what we ask in the name of jesus may them receive your help in the time of need and we pray in jesus name amen amen yes sir hey dad do you mind if i pray for russia please can i pray for russia absolutely go for it yeah yeah i just want to tell our audience that i broke the news on twitter uh yesterday that over 300 russian evangelical pastors and evangelical leaders wrote an open letter to uh to the kremlin and basically uh asked the kremlin to stop uh the war it was a bold move and and they are putting their names they're putting their lives on the line in the middle of everything that's going on um and i know that pastor vladim vladimir will say right now he will say to you that russia and russians are not his enemy absolutely not russians are not our enemy vladimir putin is not our enemy the russian people are not our enemy and so i just i you know these are these are lives that are hanging in the balance and god loves them just as he loves the ukrainians he loves the russians just imagine living in russia today where you cannot boldly proclaim the message of jesus christ can you just imagine you go on a street corner in downtown moscow and say something against the regime you know here in ukraine they make fun of zelensky because he's a comedian and they make fun of him nobody here in la vie or kiev will ever get arrested for making a joke or a fun at president zelinski but in moscow today if you said something against vladimir putin you will be put in prison and that is the grip of darkness today is a spiritual battle it is a spiritual uh uh atmosphere today that is over the nation of of russia so i have no hate for russians i have i'm sure pastor valadimir will say the very same thing god does not call us to hate our enemy he calls us to love our enemy and so i just want to pray for russia today it may seem a little crazy but god can touch vladimir putin uh he can touch the he can touch the the from the army from the men who are on the on the front lines here in in in ukraine the men who before right now and uh i pray for president putin i pray lord the holy spirit would touch him would penetrate his heart would make him feel so uncomfortable right now that there would be a stirring in his heart lord that you would you would pierce his heart and make it supple before you make it soft before you may he have an encounter with you lord lord we hear stories so many times of muslims in the middle east getting dreams and visions of you lord will you appear to vladimir putin in a dream would you appear to vladimir putin in a vision would you appear in a dream and a vision to his army to his generals to uh uh lord to i think of uh uh of uh the foreign minister lavrov the lord and all the members of the cabinet in in in the kremlin lord that the holy spirit would touch them in a profound way lord i pray for these 300 plus pastors who have put their names put their signatures uh to this open letter pleading for the kremlin to stop the bloodshed lord in in ukraine lord i pray for these pastors that you would protect them you would minister to them to their families lord i pray for the russian people today lord that you will give them hope that their hope is not in the kremlin that their hope is not an institution and their money and their wealth their in their nation in their russian identity and nationality lord i pray that they would see their identity and their worth in you our messiah so today lord i pray the holy spirit would hover over the nation of russia and you would tear down just as as ronald reagan told mikhail gorbachev tear down this wall lord i pray in the name of jesus that you would tear down the iron curtain and the darkness that is upon russia that you would break the spirit of darkness over that nation lord and your light of the gospel will pierce this great nation lord and that they would turn their hearts to your father in a miraculous way just as pastor vladimir was praying for miracles for his people lord i pray today for miracles for russians that they would have an encounter with you in a very dramatic way lord and they would find your hope they would find their peace in the midst of their own turmoil their own economic turmoil their own national turmoil that they would find peace in the prince of peace jesus christ and it is in his powerful name the name that sets captives free the names that brings freedom and liberty i pray in this name that freedom would come to russia freedom would come lord to to ukraine lord and that there would be a spirit of freedom true freedom found in you o lord in jesus mighty name amen amen thank you for that george and i gotta say uh maybe we're getting small miracles early before you started that prayer george the skype was breaking up and then the minute you started that prayer that thing came in crystal clear but at the beginning of that was pretty cool um but i appreciate that prayer and um you know i think as we're getting close here i think we're going to close this out here in a couple minutes um uh if there's anything else you can think of that we should be praying for feel free to drop it in but we i just want to mention that for all of you who have been sending in your prayers thank you for that we have got them we have printed them we have emailed them we are sending them out so obviously they're going to the god of the universe but they are going out to um uh to people like uh pastor vladimir and others who are going to see them they're going to feel them they know that you're praying for them and uh that is a fact go ahead george that i want to say that every time i'm out on the streets all those prayers i think there's like a thousand plus or more as as time is permits i have been reading those prayers uh to people i just walk up to random people and i tell them that people in america and around the world are praying for you and it's powerful you know and then i yes and then i show them to i show it to them i show them in english and then my translator and and it's profound and so i know that that uh pastor bologna and so many others are feeling the burden of the of the world as as we pray and intercede and so please know i want to tell our viewers that when you send those prayers i'm going to do my best to to read them and to come up and i've been doing that all throughout my time here just walking up to strangers and reading your prayers from around the world for them and i can tell you it touches them in a profound way so keep
