[Applause] the catholic community of sacred heart welcomes you to this celebration of the eucharist we are so pleased you're here to celebrate with us on this seventh sunday in ordinary time together we make a community of faith to celebrate the lord and so we do [Music] there's a wideness in god's mercy like the wideness of the sea there's a kindness in god's justice which is forth and liberty there is plenty for redemption [Music] there is joy for all the members in the sorrows [Music] like the promised grace and good there is mercy with the savior there is healing in christ's blood there is [Music] so be merciful just as our god is merciful [Music] just as our god is merciful to us in god's mercy let there be kindness oh may our lives be merciful [Music] oh may our lives be merciful [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace and the peace of god our father the immense love the wisdom and the irrepressible joy of our resurrected and ascended savior jesus our christ and the fellowship of their holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit well hello to all of you at home uh this is a very sacred time for us to enter the deep mystery of the eucharist so i invite you to unplug i would to turn off the phone if you can and find a quiet place where you can be comfortable and rest in god and when we practice the breathing together this is our means of fulfilling what the church asks of us that is to be full fully conscious fully present fully aware and participating in the eucharist so when we take a big centering breath we breathe out our schedule our plans we leave the past behind we don't go into the future we become totally present to enter into the presence of god when we take that big communal spiritual breath together we welcome an interior silence this disposes us to be receptive to the grace of god in the word of god and in his body and blood and when we take the third breath we exhale and open ourselves completely entrust to the activity of god through the work of the holy spirit to transform us from our sinfulness into newness of life [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] is [Music] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king glory to god in the highest and on lord jesus christ only begotten son god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us glory to god in the pies [Music] [Music] [Music] jesus christ [Music] with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father glory to god in the highest [Music] glory to god glory to god [Music] let us pray grant we pray almighty god that always pondering spiritual things we may carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the first book of samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of ziff with three thousand picked men of israel to search for david in the desert of zif so david and abisha went among saul's soldiers by night and found saul lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head an abner and his men sleeping around him abhishek said whisper to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abishai do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and the jug of water from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone seeing or knowing or awakening they all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to the opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of nur and the troops and he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over and get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and his faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i will not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord [Music] the lord is [Music] the lord [Music] bless his holy name [Music] and forget [Music] is [Music] kindness not according to our sins does he deal with us nor [Music] is [Music] [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so are the earthly and as is the heavenly one so are the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord [Music] [Music] i give you a new command [Music] love one another [Music] hallelujah [Music] [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you jesus said to his disciples to you who have ears to hear listen i tell you love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who mistreat you to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others as you would have them do to you for if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even sinners do the same if you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you for even sinners lend to sinners and get the same amount back but rather love your enemies and do good to them and lend expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for god himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked so be merciful just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will pour into your lap for the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you the gospel of the lord jesus christ ah dear friends here we have a very powerful teaching of christ in the gospel of luke notice how he begins this discourse let him who has ears to hear let him hear and you'll notice that jesus says this often let those who can hear hear and notice that a lot of his miracles are opening the ears of the deaf and uh sight to the blind so what does he mean with this exhortation let the one who can hear hear well it means that many people are obstructed in their hearing you can think of it this way the message is coming from jesus but it it can't penetrate you if you can't hear it because you're already thinking about something else or you already have a fixed idea in your mind that will prevent his radical teaching to enter it's like a tv screen you know nowadays it's uh not that things are coming out of tubes from inside the tv but there's now through the internet and cable messages are coming into the television but if your screen is covered with that snow you can't see you can't receive the messages that are beaming in to your tv set so the first thing is we have to be ready to hear these teachings and ready means that we have to drop a lot of our preconceived ideas we have to drop a lot in fact we have to drop what our society teaches what our culture teaches sadly sometimes even what the religions will teach in order to hear the words of life that come to us from christ now this teaching is so incredibly radical love your enemies like what what love your enemies jesus says and he goes on to teach something so astonishingly new and fresh about the heavenly father and remember jesus is god made flesh he is the word made flesh he says no one knows the father but the son and whomever the son will reveal the father through the gift of the holy spirit he knows what he's talking about and listen to this god shine on the good and the bad alike it is like sunshine the sun doesn't say oh i will give my life-giving raise to what all of you good people on the earth but i will withhold my life-giving light and warmth from all of you bad evil people the sun doesn't do that similarly god's love is like the rain the rain is the same the nature of the rain is the same but it brings out roses in the garden and it brings out thorns in the marsh he's exhorting his disciples if they have ears hey be like your heavenly father be his children remember back in genesis you were made in the image and the likeness of god well if this is so then this teaching of christ has to sink into the marrow of our bones so that it really is possible to love your enemies you know it you might say no i i can't do that there are these unlovable people where i absolutely positively cannot love him or her they're evil they're bad i cannot love them and yet christ is challenging that view and he's saying god loves them right on you think jesus didn't know about enemies spitting on him scourging him he knows about nails and spears and plots against him to bring him down and all kinds of awful things they said he was coming from the devil for heaven's sake he knows about enemies and he's saying love them and jesus even though he was attempting very much in his earthly ministry to correct them he loves them and at the end once they had done the very worst to him his last words forgive them father they don't know what they're doing already forgiveness as he's crucified between two thieves to one of whom he says this day you will be with me in paradise now jesus the christ has now given you the gift and the grace of the holy spirit wow we've received this in our baptism we renew it every time we pray and we bow down and ask the spirit to to give us the grace to do as jesus says and to become the message of christ in the world that we would actually be people who by being so radically close to god in our prayer by participation in the eucharist and all of the sacraments that we embody his gospel we embody him in fact our whole project as christians is to become in union with him to have them not only the mind of christ but the heart of christ and when we do loving the enemy is easy as pie it really really is you're able to see through what happened to them as children you're able to see through the terrorists and see what happened to that little boy having hatred drilled into him from day one not his fault he's grown up this way god sees into the heart and he's saying that we can too the more and more we allow ourself to be transformed by that grace which is available to us always the christian life is really about this radical transformation of our human condition we came into this world certainly not perfect none of us were raised perfect from year one onward things happened to us we have emotional traumas every one of us from childhood etc we got conditioned and cultured by a very sick society sick world sick culture we ingested all of this clutter and poison and uh here we are and when jesus says repent when he says the kingdom is here we allow him to have access to the deepest places within us and to transform us as a process until our eventual union with him which is the project of a christian life spelled out perfectly in the wonderful gospel teaching that we read now you'll notice in the gospel that the people who listened to jesus who had the ears were generally the very sinful people that were easy to look down upon i mean it was the prostitutes it was the uh money changers and the tax collectors who were really extortionists who we would consider the worst of society these are people who have been beaten up enough with life that they're looking to jesus and seeing something so much better that they're welcoming him he's having table fellowship with these people and having intimacy with them and their lives are always changing for the better as they see the goodness they hear the goodness and the possibility for a meaningful powerful joyful life in him they're all ears but who are the ones who cannot hear him who were the ones where he had so much difficulty these are the pharisees these are the scribes these are the ones who are judging others these are the ones who are condemning others and sadly we have some of that in our own church oh my lord someone showed me a book it's uh written by a protestant pastor and the title of it is mean christians and the pastor's thesis is how can christianity ever have produced so many vitriolic mean people all about rejecting people wholesale all about rendering judgment on people all about condemning people and all of us are going to heaven but not you and all of the rest please dear god if anything spare any of us from being mean christians don't do that there's enough of those in the world already but you you have the word made flesh giving you not only this divine teaching but giving you the power the wisdom and the grace to absorb it and thus to be healed first so that you are transformed in love and then you love your enemies and no matter what they do to you it's like throwing cans of paint at a blue sky you never contaminate the sky because you're in union with your father in whose image you were created and in whose grace you dwell in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen and so do you believe in god the father the almighty the maker of heaven and earth i do too and do you believe in his son our lord jesus christ who was born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried i do i do too do you believe that jesus who died rose from the dead that he ascended into heaven that he is seated at the right hand of the father that he's the spiritual authority of the universe and to him alone belongs the divine right to judge anyone the living and the dead i do i do too do you believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of the saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting i do i do too this is our faith and we celebrate it in the power of the holy spirit and in the joy of christ on this seventh sunday in ordinary time let us join in offering our needs to god asking him to bless us and those for whom we pray for our church may goodwill and compassion mark all deeds done in the name of christ we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our ordained and lay church holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith and drink this calm we proclaim your death [Music] [Applause] as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread
