breathe out we simply let go of all of the contents of our active lives our projects and our plans our worries and our concerns we simply drop everything and become simple like children we take that second breath in and as we breathe out here is the grandness of interior silence gently ushering us into the mystical dimension of our faith we take that third breath deeply and as we breathe out we sink profoundly into the depths of our hearts and there from a place of inner mystery but inner knowledge we cry out to god to touch us in exactly that place where we need that god-like love and healing the most [Music] so [Music] [Music] please [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen we praise you we bless you we adore you we the world [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth [Music] [Music] are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father glory to god in the highest and on earth glory to god glory to god glory to god in the highest let us pray o god protector of those who hope in you without whom nothing has firm foundation and nothing is holy bestow in abundance your mercy upon us and grant that with you as our ruler and guide we may use the good things that pass in just such a way as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure we ask these things through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in unity with the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of exodus the whole israelite community grumbled against moses and aaron the israelites said to them would that we had died at the lord's hand in the land of egypt as we sat by our flesh pots and ate our fill of bread but you had to lead us into this desert and make this whole community die of famine then the lord said to moses i will now rain down bread from heaven for you each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion will i test them to see whether they follow my instructions or not i have heard the grumbling of the israelites tell them in the evening twilight you shall eat flesh and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread so that you may know that i the lord am your god in the evening quail came up and covered the camp in the morning a dew lay all about the camp and when the dew evaporated there on the surface of the desert were fine flakes like horfrost on the ground on seeing it the israelites asked one another what is this for they did not know what it was but moses told them this is the bread that the lord has given for you to eat the word of the lord the lord gave them bread from heaven the lord [Music] and what our fathers have declared to us we will declare to the generation to come the glorious deeds of the lord and his strength [Music] [Applause] [Music] he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven he rained manna upon them for food and gave them heavenly bread [Music] man ate the bread of angels food he sent them in abundance and he brought them to his holy land to the mountains his right hand had won [Applause] [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the ephesians brothers and sisters i declare and testify in the lord that you must no longer live as the gentiles do in the futility of their minds that is not how you learned christ assuming that you have heard of him and were taught in him as truth is in jesus that you should put away the old self of your former way of life corrupted through deceitful desires and be renewed in the spirit of your minds put on a new self created in god's way in righteousness and holiness of truth the word of the lord [Music] one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god [Music] reading from the holy gospel according to john when the crowd saw that neither jesus nor his disciples were there they themselves got into boats and came to capernaum looking for jesus and when they found him across the sea they said to him rabbi when did you get here jesus answered them and said amen amen i say to you you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because because you ate the loaves and were filled do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for life eternal which the son of man will give you for on him the father god has set his seal so they said to him what can we do to accomplish the works of god jesus answered and said to them this is the work of god that you believe in the one he sent so they said to him what sign can you do that we may see and believe in you what can you do our ancestors ate manna in the desert as it is written he gave them bread from heaven to eat so jesus said to them amen amen i say to you it was not moses who gave the bread from heaven my father gives you the true bread from heaven for the bread of god is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world so they said to him sir give us this bread always jesus said to them i am the bread of life whoever comes to me will never hunger and who believes in me will never thirst the gospel of the lord jesus christ ah my dear friends there are two men behind the cameras today one is our sacred heart person of the year brent billman and the other one is my very close and dear friend of almost 30 years daryl nutt daryl doesn't know i'm going to talk about him today but daryl was in a big dream that i had last night that i want to share with you it was an amazing dream he and i were having a talk like old times good friends just sitting down and talking and i was trying to explain to daryl the difference between bread that you'd buy in the grocery store and eat and jesus himself as the bread of life and daryl was looking at me uh and very open you know and said yeah explain that to me and this is what i said well daryl when you eat bread this is nutrient for the body and the body is an astonishing piece of equipment we all know that it's connected to uh you know the brain and the nervous system and all of our interface with reality as such we perceive through the body and all of this perceiving is also what holds in place the emotional body of a person think about that the emotional self the part of you that experiences love of a kind that experiences afflictive emotions we all know them things like anger and uh frustration and those kinds of things uh the sensations of joy all of the emotive things are part and parcel of this physical body and food depending on what you eat can make a big difference in how you feel how you feel about yourself can how you feel about the day your attitudes and i went well you know there's one more element daryl the soul what is that and the two of us began to discuss back and forth what is the soul and while the soul is at one now with the body and its wonder and the bread we eat and the body developing developing developing there comes a time when the body has a shelf life an expiration date and will no longer live however the soul of a person is eternal and lives forever that soul is what survives death that soul is what is always in union with god that soul is where we go when we do the breathing exercises we go inward and become wordless and silent and we all can intuit the soul but it's impossible to define and in my dream i said daryl do you understand all that and he said sure of course doesn't everyone and i woke up i went wow what a dream and then i remembered it was time to celebrate this mass for you and that that is the subject of jesus's teaching i am the bread of life so i think it's important to distinguish between bread that nourishes the body and the bread that jesus speaks of the bread of life that nourishes the soul and grows the soul that grows the everlasting eternal parts of ourselves developing developing developing in this glorious union with the author of everything now obviously the bread that jesus speaks of is intensely spiritual and it's interesting i came across recently some comments made by pope francis he was saying we have jesus the bread of life to feed upon but so many of us have ruined our diets by eating stale bread stale lousy bread kind of like what would happen if you and i went on a junk food binge say for a week we wouldn't feel too good would we or if we went on a binge where all we did was 24 7 watch a radical news network you know the kind i'm speaking about and we ingested that all week long 24 7. imagine how you'd feel so he said we've been feeding too long on stale bread and i took some notes it's like okay francis what stale bread he said the first one believe it or not is we have been eating the stale bread of disinformation and that got my attention and i thought disinformation yeah first of all don't believe everything you read a second of all don't believe everything you hear and third of all be very careful about the opinions of others and disinformation how about this think about people talking about people and somebody says oh you're not going to like so and so he's this this this this this and then if you allow that as your food you already have an attitude when you finally meet this person but if you're wise like christ who says recently take nothing for your journey and you just let go of all of that preconditioned idea and programming about this person and you meet them you might find this person is great that you really enjoy this person you might have met your new best friend who knows disinformation the second thing that he says francis said we have been eating way too much of stale bread of conformism you know let's just conform to the society if we do we fit in if we do we'll be happy if we just conform to what the advertisers tell us if we drive the right car if we make the right amount of money whatever that is if we have status or position or any of those things conform conform francis says that this will not satisfy any thirst but will end up drinking only indifference and insensitivity wow then he says we've been feeding ourselves on dreams and grandiosity the splendor of grandeur and he says that we end up consuming only distraction and insularity and a solitude but not the good kind a kind of loneliness that is not good for us he says that we have and been gorging ourselves on networking gorging ourselves on social media and that it really really leads to us losing the taste for community real fraternity it amazes me every time i go to a restaurant i don't know about you but for me do you ever see a couple in a restaurant and they're on their cell phones the whole time it's so sad and i know all of you have told me stories of your grandkids coming for thanksgiving dinner and they're under the table texting during the meal pope francis says that we have been gorging ourselves on this he says that we have become awfully soggy by eating way too much of quick and safe results and therefore we're never satisfied we're always impatient and frustrated think recently that in our efforts to stop the pandemic worldwide instead of saying isn't it great close to 70 percent of us are vaccinated in the united states we're saying oh we didn't make the july 1st goal oh we're falling behind oh the delta variant oh the and we're frustrated you've got a whole country frustrated that we haven't gotten on top of the vaccine fast enough quick enough or is effective enough how sad we might instead be dazzled by the incredible response of brilliant people who came up with the answer to this pandemic medically so quickly and so efficiently and finally he says that because of all of this diet of stale bread we have become prisoners of a virtual reality and we have lost the savor and the taste of that which is truly real that which is truly real every morning honestly when i wake up after the experience of hurricane charlie when we had no electricity no running water i think weeks of this there isn't a morning anymore where i don't give thanks for the gift of the running water and in the shower there's hot water it's like a miracle to me every time do we take time to really savor how a day unfolds because let's be honest the day is all you and i have to live it's the present moment what do we think there is beside this right now this is how life is lived jesus says i am the bread of life notice that his best prayer is give us this day our daily bread it's every day every day we need to be fed and nourished in our hearts with the bread that really satisfies the bread of love the bread of gratitude the bread of forgiveness the bread of love may you be well fed this day and every day of your lives in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit amen and so do you believe in god the father the almighty the maker of heaven and earth i do i do too and do you believe in his son our lord jesus christ who was born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried i do i do too do you believe that jesus who died rose from the dead that he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father and to him alone belongs the divine right to judge anyone the living and the dead i do i do too do you believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of the saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting i do this is our faith we celebrate it with great joy this day and every day whoever comes to me will never be hungry whoever believes in me will never be thirsty nourished and strengthened by god's word we approach the lord now with confidence bringing our needs and the needs of people everywhere for the thousands of innocent children who die every day from starvation that we may come to their aid as god responded to the israelites of old we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those in positions of authority that they may exercise their responsibility with wisdom and compassion respecting the life and the dignity of all people we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we confess jesus as the one sent by god may we grow in faith accepting his way as god's way and his teaching as food that nourishes us in our journey through life we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer jesus is the bread that gives life to the world by our obedience to him and his commandments may we bring others to faith so that they may share the bread that gives life to the world we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer let us pray for the grace to trust that christ loves us no matter what we have or where we have gone we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who have died may christ welcome them into eternal light and the joy of god's presence for our loved ones for the sick and the homebound for the military and law enforcement personnel and all first responders and most especially we remember those for whom we have promised to pray we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer creator god we thank you for the gift of your son jesus the giver of life increase our faith in him and grant the prayers we ask through christ our lord amen [Music] we come here broken we come in need searching for truth longing for are the peace gross to you be present is [Music] sacrifice the we gather as one [Music] all that we carry all that we may we be [Music] sacrifice the bread of life we gather as one we gather as one [Music] we gather as one pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church graciously sanctify these gifts o lord we pray and accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice make of us an eternal offering to you through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in you we live and move and have our being and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care but even now possess the pledge of everlasting life for having received the first fruits of the holy spirit through whom you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an everlasting share in the paschal mystery and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we acclaim are full of your glory [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] [Applause] [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and frank our bishop and all those who serve you remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy as believers in the resurrection we take a moment to cherish deep within our hearts those we have loved the most in our own lifetime who've left this world for the next ahead of us welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles saint francis saint claire saint therese and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours [Music] [Applause] [Music] forever together we prayed the beautiful prayer jesus himself taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray
