[Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you hello everybody thank you for saying yes i'm going to keep sunday holy and what a great day to keep holy the day that jesus rose from the dead for you and for me even though we haven't treated him that well in our life god is a god of mercy and today in the gospel you're going to hear the hardest teaching of christianity is it what christians and and catholics and what jesus teaches us about um sexual morality yes or no no is it about financial morality yes or no no is it about eating meat before mass it's about loving your enemies for the times that we haven't treated people who treated us badly as god would have us treat them let's ask him to forgive us maybe pray that god bless them and change us let's call to mind our sins and ask for god's mercy for us i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words and what i have done what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone of the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray grant we pray almighty god that always pondering spiritual things we may carry out in both word indeed that which is pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the first book of samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of zip with three thousand picked men of israel to search for david in the desert of zip so david and abhishei went among saul's soldiers by night and found saul lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping around him abishai whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abhishei do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and water jug from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone seeing or knowing or awakening all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of near and the troops he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i would not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord thanks be to god the lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful bless the lord o my soul and all my being bless his holy name bless the lord o my soul and forg forget not all his benefits the lord is kind and merciful he pardons all your iniquities heals all your ills he redeems your life from destruction crowns you with kindness and compassion the lord is kind and merciful merciful and gracious is the lord slow to anger and abounding in kindness not according to our sins does he deal with us nor does he requite us according to our crimes the lord is kind and merciful as far as the east is from the west so far has he put our transgressions from us as a father has compassion on his children so the lord has compassion on those who fear him the lord is kind and merciful a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so also are the earthly and as is the heavenly one so also are the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord thanks be to god alleluia alleluia i give you a new commandment says the lord love one another as i have loved you alleluia alleluia the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples to you who hear i say love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who mistreat you to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others as you would have them do to you for if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even centers do the same if you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners and get back the same amount but rather love your enemies and do good to them and lend expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap for the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ okay so uh many of you who have been with us on this crazy journey for two years already know this so i'm not gonna go uh into how do you you know like what do you do when someone hurts you or offends you like how do you love your enemies because i've talked about that a couple times and i'm sure i'll repeat that homily the whole bless him change me if you are new to this and you have no clue what i'm saying or you want a refresher on that i think it was the sunday after christmas it was family sunday jess doesn't remember she doesn't she doesn't watch all the homilies right before diane does but her husband i think it was the sunday after christmas so i'll have a link to it somewhere up here uh if you if someone hurts you and you're having trouble loving them what do you do right some of you already know that answer bless him bless her change me right someone interrupts you and all that i go into a good teaching on that it's pretty good a lot of people like it i use it all the time we get a lot of haters online for some reason people love to like judge people online and they write all kinds and i'm not in social media other than this youtube and people write the worst things on on like facebook or something and online and that's a dangerous practice because jesus is like stop judging and you won't be judgmental so when people are typing all kinds of terrible things you are engaging in a habit that will lead to your own destruction be careful but if someone hurts you your boss someone takes your job someone destroys your family somehow or your reputation or something and you're having struggle i struggle with that i have a video that should help you certainly helped me now the hardest teaching in christianity is what you hear jesus say today love your enemies pray for those who persecute you be generous in extending mercy diane why do you want to be merciful to others so they will be dying responsible so that they will be merciful to her they might not be merciful to her but god will be merciful to me so saint francis saint francis was sitting in his uh you know his beggars hovel with a bunch of the brothers this broken down church and there was he had an owl saint francis had a pet owl and um you know they really didn't give a hoot about the politics of the world but there they are trying to live the gospel and a crow flies in and a crow flies in and lands in this little stone window and it says um what does the crow say uh the cross as the crow flies the crow says um thief thief and francis in the owl looks up and and the crow says judge him johnship judge him francis and the hour look at each other and they say what's going on and the crow explains that there's a blue jay who took some peanuts that were set out for a squirrel and so the crow wants the blue jay judged and so francis and the owl look to each other and they don't know which person that the crow is talking to so the owl says who and the crow says francis francis so by the door in the little church there the broken down church francis had two sacks one sack he put on his right shoulder and one on his left and he before he put these sacks on he cut he just tore a little bit of a rip in the bottom of each of these sacks and as he left the front door of his house and started walking one of the sacks started to drip a trail of sand it was a bag full of sand and as francis walked there was a trail of sand coming up behind him and the other one dropped seeds randomly like when they would beg for apples and whatever kind of refuse produce that the franciscans got they would save the seeds and so pumpkin seeds and cherry seeds and apple seeds and and all kinds of uh well seeds and every like every 100 yards or so francis would stop put down the sacks take a breather and the owl was flying along with them and he would plant one of those seeds even though the others were just all falling on the ground you'd pick both sacks up and keep walking and so then they got to the place where there was a whole i think they call them is it a murder of crows i think it's what they call a whole flock of crows i think it's called the murder of crows these ladies don't know i think it's a murder of crows and so there's all these crows flying around bruh and there's this poor little blue jay like shivering and cold and judged by all these crows and he is singing the blues this this jaybird this blue jay and francis comes up and then uh all the all the crows land down and the poor blue jay won't even raise his eyes to look at francis or the owl and and all the crows start cheering judge him judge him and so the owl looks at the crows and looks at francis and says who and so francis looks up at the little bird and he says i don't know that i will judge you little bird and all the crows are upset or why why francis looks around behind him at the trail of sand and he says my own sins go out behind me like sand in no position to judge you little bird and then the owl says uh the owl says seeds see i can't do an owl voice right now but you can do one at home and the the crows all start saying why why why and francis says the mercy you plant today will come and feed you tomorrow i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come to raise our prayers to almighty god for the church throughout the world may god bestow unity among all her peoples let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for political leaders may the lord assist them in working to promote peace among all nations let us pray to the lord lord lord hear our prayer for those who suffer from the effects of violent conflict in their communities may god protect and comfort them let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those gathered here may the holy spirit increase in us a spirit of conversion and openness to his work in our lives let us pray to the lord lord hear hear our prayer for all who have died may they receive every good gift from the father in heaven let us pray to the lord lord lord hear our prayer for our enemies and those who have harmed us let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the end to coronavirus let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and now for those petitions we hold in the silence of our hearts let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer almighty father turn toward us and hear the prayers your holy spirit inspires us to ask for we ask them on your day through christ our lord [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours should be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and the glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we celebrate your mysteries oh lord with the observance that is your due we humbly ask you that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may profit us for salvation through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty eternal god through christ our lord for out of compassion for the waywardness that is ours he humbled himself and was born of the virgin by the passion of the cross he freed us from unending death and by rising from the dead he gave us life eternal and so with angels and dark angels with thrones and dominions with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing to him of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god a blessed joseph her spouse a blessed apostle saint martha saint francis and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let's offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] you shall cross [Music] are you i go before you and i will give you [Music] grant we pray almighty god that we may experience the effects of the salvation which is pledged to us by these mysteries and sacraments through christ our lord ah just a couple of things to share so uh after uh these announcements here i'm gonna have a video by our diocese this is really for those within the diocese of trenton uh and this is if you came to church this week this is uh the catholic appeal week where our bishop is gonna be asking all of us to donate a little bit of money to help the diocese and particularly the money goes to some of our social programs some of our programs to help elderly clergy some of our food pantries some a little bit for catholic education when i was a chaplain at princeton our budget which was about i think it was like two hundred thousand dollars is what it took for us to run a youth our campus ministry program when i was there i don't know what it is now if it's through the roof or it's a lot less but all of that money that fed to help feed the catholic life for kids from all over the world who came to princeton all of that money came from this appeal right so did did princeton have a large number of kids from the diocese of trenton frankly no i think we only had like two most of the kids that we fed at princeton their catholic faith and encouraged to become catholic and all and our witness were from all over the world and all over the united states and all of that money to run that catholic program came from this kind of thing so we're all part of the catholic church which is bigger than us and any one of our little churches but all those dioceses need help and i give to the bishop's appeal i don't give that's not my main charity but i personally as dave take my color off my colors on the side right now but i give to it and i also help out the diocese in juneau alaska because that's where my little parish up there in skagway is so uh if you're interested in watching that video you can click that link after the mass and if you want to support it great or maybe think about how you can support your diocese a couple cool letters now a lot of a lot of you guys know this if you have written us a letter uh i try to give you a handwritten letter back and i mean well at least jess can see it she's in the office it takes forever but i try to write your hand letter back because i appreciate that you sent one to me but we i get like 100 letters a week sometimes more than 100 a week and it takes a lot of time so i'm a little behind but a lot of you out there know that i wrote you back in my terrible chicken scratch but a couple people i'm behind on so i just want to just acknowledge a couple so i feel bad for this this this should have been read january 30th uh this is from a girl in alabama dear father dave my little brother jude loves watching you and cragly each week he turns nine next sunday january 30th it would be great if you could wish him a happy birthday so jude god bless you on your ninth birthday may it be may you know a couple weeks in may be really great and enjoy this last year before you hit double digits because it'll be a long time until you hit triple digits god bless you uh she says i'm sorry we didn't get these oh bandanas they sent some cool viking bandanas um and they're um notre dame fans and then she drew a great picture of my favorite girl go vikings who have a coach so thank you very much liza from alabama as well we have some folks that have said hi from south korea and i want to say congratulations to one of the girls sunny who got her red belt in taekwondo taekwondo so congratulations um that's outstanding hello to you guys and god bless uh your family and your sister um pretty cool south korea taekwondo is not a martial art that i've studied i studied a couple other ones um and some people want to know about self-defense especially with that gospel turn the other cheek and that first reading gives you a bit of a teaching on that king david is there with saul and the spear and did saul ever try to throw that spirit david yes or no say yes yeah and david dodged it well there david is in the first reading and he's got the opportunity to just take that spear and kill saul and he does it he takes the spear away and so a good principle in self-defense especially for martial arts is to take someone's ability to harm you away and once you've taken their ability to harm you away you don't have to go further right so this is where styles not necessarily like tae kwon do but things like brazilian jiu jitsu which i haven't studied that but if you can get someone in an arm bar an arm lock a leg lock of some kind you know a joint lock of some kind and they're in pain but they can't harm you you know and then security comes or the police come or something like that that's great sometimes a good you know a good punch to the face can take away their ability to harm you so there's a difference between protecting yourself and someone you love and then just being on top of somebody wailing on them with elbows and fists and that doesn't look like taking their ability to harm a way that looks like harming them so there's a fine line in there but congratulations to all of you who are studying martial arts and advancing in that that's a great thing use that to help people jesus is coming to defend us from the cross right that's what he's doing but he's not punching he's dying for us okay and lastly this is pretty cool um so we got a letter i'm a little behind on it but a letter from pretty cool a bunch of catholics some catholics here in um china in singapore and they say dear father dave you know greetings from sunny singapore yes your masses have reached our tiny island in south asia in the southeastern sea uh with the minority of catholics comprising of many ethnicities and mixed racial people like myself mixed portuguese dutch chinese look forward to your mass online every sunday so god bless you guys all the way out there in china that's awesome we were super excited that our little church is reaching you guys out there so i'd ask everybody who's watching this week to say a prayer for those catholics out there in china and god bless them and and all those people it's pretty cool how we're a part of this big family and that family stretches back to abraham and adam and eve even when diane messed up that which you'll see the bloopers uh and one day we'll be all together in heaven so we're all part of this bigger thing let's continue to say yes to the holy spirit uh and live this faith the lord be with you oh wait i didn't get well i hope the lord is with you but i didn't give you a joke did i give you a joke no saint francis you know what was he eating what is saint francis in the first six franciscans eat all the time they were beggars right they ate whatever they could get right and one of the brothers was upset he was tired of eating bread and stuff and he wanted to know he said francis when are we gonna eat some like tootsie roll pops and saint francis said i will let you know some of you get that the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit go in peace thanks be to god [Music] let an attendant come over to get it the lord will re oh i got older you get all those names god bless and then
