is pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever [Music] a reading from the first book of samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of zith with three thousand picked men of israel to search for david in the desert of zith so david and abisha went among saul's soldiers by night and found sauls lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping around him whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abisha do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and the water jug from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone's seeing or knowing or awakening all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of nur and the troops he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i will not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord [Music] the lord is [Music] is [Music] bless the lord o my soul and all my being bless his holy name bless thy lord [Applause] [Music] is [Music] he pardons all your iniquities heals all your ears [Music] kindness [Music] merciful and gracious is the lord slow to anger and abounding in [Music] to kindness sins does he deal with us nor does he requires according to our crimes [Music] is as far as the east is from the west so far our has [Music] from us [Music] is is [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so also are the earthly and as is the heavenly one so also are the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord [Music] ya oh [Music] says my lord [Music] my [Music] me [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus said to his disciples to you who hear i say love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who mistreat you to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others as you would have them do to you for if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even sinners do the same if you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners and get back the same amount but rather love your enemies and do good to them and lend expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap for the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you the gospel of the lord today's gospel account is a continuation of last sunday's sermon on the plane which is saint luke's version of the sermon on the mount and presents us with what scholars call the golden rule do to others as you would have them do to you this is a phrase we have heard on more than one occasion and probably have not given it much thought except of course when it's in our favor today's gospel is filled with catchwords for christianity phrases that are quite familiar love your enemies do good to those who hate you turn the other cheek do not judge give and gifts will be given to you this gospel is filled with guidelines for christian living and we might be able to extract our favorite instruction but the problem is that the entire gospel is a package deal and we cannot pick and choose which part of the gospel we wish to observe admittedly part of today's gospel is simply good manners and it is natural for us to be kinder to the people we like or who like us or those folks that are like us the people that we normally associate with however if we are honest we probably have a difficult time sometimes getting along with our own family and now jesus is telling us to love our enemies for this could be next to impossible for many perhaps the best way to understand what jesus is trying to teach us today is by looking at the way psychology and sociology categorize the patterns of human behavior it is very common for psychologists and sociologists to refer to human behavior in the form of cycles we hear about the cycle of domestic violence the cycle of poverty the cycle of addiction the cycle of abuse psychology teaches that these cycles often continue until somehow the pattern is broken with today's gospel jesus is calling us to break the cycle jesus is not telling us to let people walk all over us but he is instructing to break the cycle of violence by not responding with violence we all know that one harsh word is usually returned with another gossip is traded for more gossip and gossip kills cruelty is met with even more cruelty as pope francis observes when we have a problem with people we tend to immediately condemn them spit on them and destroy them strong words but true and unfortunately the cycle becomes continuous it becomes a vicious pattern by which one person or a group of people respond to another but that is not what jesus wants of us jesus wants us to become holy and when one person responds to evil with evil something very unholy happens something very negative happens when we choose to respond to evil with vengeance we choose to allow evil into our lives and that destroys us and we're also cooperating with evil's wicked intentions and none of that leads to holiness jesus is challenging us to rise above our basic human nature as pope francis stated earlier today in rome the disciple of jesus is called not to give in to instinct and hatred but to go further go beyond instinct jesus calls us to be compassionate not to judge not to condemn jesus tells us that what we pour forth into the world will be poured upon us and we all want goodness to be poured on us and so in turn we should be pouring forth goodness jesus is our greatest example of one who broke the status quo on every level jesus refused to condemn those who were trapped in sin instead he poured forth divine mercy upon them jesus refused to respond in kind with the evil done to him just recall the many less than pleasant encounters that jesus had with the scribes and the pharisees his response was always one in which he challenged the scribes and the pharisees to look at themselves and to see if what they were doing was leading them and others to god or driving them away or think of when jesus is brought to his passion and he is brought before the high priest annas and the guards did not like the answer that jesus gave when questioned about his teaching we are told that when he had said this one of the temple guards standing there struck jesus and said is that the way you answer the high priest in response jesus states i s if i have spoken wrongly testify to the wrong but if i have spoken rightly why do you strike me after that jesus is led to caiaphas and when the high priest did not like his answer regarding jesus being charged with blasphemy scripture relates they spat in his face and struck him while some slapped him and of course jesus gave us the ultimate example of how we are to deal with those who offend us or persecute us when hanging from the cross jesus utters one of his final prayers father forgive them they know not what they do another good example of one who refused to respond to evil with evil is david from today's first reading from the book of samuel saul was in search of david to kill him because saul was jealous of david we saw in today's reading how david could have killed saul but david refused instead david kept trying to persuade saul to turn away from the violence in his heart in our pilgrimage to holiness in our quest to be united with jesus there is no way that we can escape today's difficult challenges and we all know that there are many challenges in our life in our world and in the church the temptation to hold a grudge to condemn to be selfish to curse someone who has cursed us is really easy it's a natural response but it's not the christ-like response the christ-like response to forgive to love and to pardon is not easy it's very difficult because it is not a human response it is a divine response and today we are called to respond divinely in our life and that's the bottom line of today's gospel it's also a challenge to each of our hearts to see what guides our hearts and to make sure that our hearts are divinely guided and for us who are people of faith it is god who guides our hearts god was always in charge and it is god who gives us the grace as we pray in the opening prayer of today's mass to carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to god i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things remain for us man and for our salvation he can came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins i look forward to the resurrection of the dead the life of the world to come amen trusting in god's unconditional love for us we ask god to provide for these our needs for all members of the church that the gospel may be the light that shines forth in their daily words and actions let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our president and elected officials that their laws and policies will always reflect to concern for the most vulnerable and those in need especially the poor immigrants and refugees the elderly and the unborn let us pray to the lord lord o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of this unto its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore oh lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me
