are they who will born in sorrow they will be comforted bless us o lord when we share their sorrow bless us o lord our god we are the light of the world may our light shine before all that they may see the good that [Music] [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace and the peace of god our father the immense love the wisdom and the joy of our resurrected and ascended savior jesus the christ and the fellowship of their holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit well hello everyone it's great to be with you on this day and it's wonderful to finally take some time make some space to commune with our god so uh if you'd like i invite you to unplug your devices and to find a comfortable place where we can rest together in the presence of god we take a practice of taking a deep breath we do this because holy mother church asks us for full active conscious participation in the eucharist and if we're in the past somewhere or we're in the future somewhere we're not even present how can we be full active and conscious so when we take a breath we exhale the schedules the clutter the worries the problems we have and we become simplified interiorly where we can have communion with god we take a big deep spiritual breath second time we breathe out and allow a silence to help center us into our hearts and we take a third breath and as we exhale we acknowledge before god our sinfulness ask for his pardon and his peace [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] [Music] you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world mercy on us [Music] jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father glory to god in the highest [Music] glory to god glory glory to god in the highest [Music] let us pray o god who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true grant that we may be as fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling place pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god for ever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah for thus says the lord cursed is the one who trusts in human beings who seeks his strength in the flesh whose heart turns away from the lord he is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season but stands in a lava waste assault an empty earth blessed is the one who trusts in the lord whose hope is in the lord he is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream it fears not the heat when it comes its leaves stay green in the year of drought it shows no distress and it still bears fruit the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] are they who hope in the lord lord blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners nor sits in the company of the insolent but delights in the law of the lord and meditates on his lord day and [Music] in night lord [Music] he is like a tree planted near running water that yields its fruit into season and whose leaves [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters if christ is preached as raised from the dead how can some among you say that there is no resurrection from the dead if the dead are not raised then neither has christ been raised and if christ has not been raised then your faith is in vain and you are still in your sins then those who have fallen asleep in christ have perished if for this life only we have hoped in christ we are the most pitiable people of all but now christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep the word of the lord [Music] oh rejoice and be glad your reward will be great in heaven hallelujah [Music] [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you lord jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a stretch of level ground with a great crowd of disciples and a large number of the people from all judea and jerusalem and the coastal region of tyre and sidon and raising his eyes toward his disciples he said blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of god is yours blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied blessed are you who are now weeping for you will laugh blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and insult you and denounce your name as evil on account of the son of man rejoice and leap for joy on that day behold your reward will be great in heaven for their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way but woe to you who are rich for you have received your consolation woe to you who are filled now for you will be hungry woe to you who laugh now for you will grieve and weep and woe to you when all speak well of you for their ancestors treated the false prophets in just this way the gospel of the lord my dear friends well jesus has just chosen his 12 apostles and here they are coming down the mountain and the gospel we've just heard is the very first teaching he gives to them as a group so already we know that this teaching has to be central this is important stuff and it's great to pay really good attention to it so uh in the gospel of matthew we have what they call the eight beatitudes the eight blessed are you when and we usually read that on all saints day in the church but here now luke gives a different version of this where we have four you are blessed when and we also have four woes whoa to you and uh for those of you that were paying attention to the first reading uh this is classic rabbinical teaching so blessed are you and cursed are you and uh this is to show contrast between the spiritual world and of course worldly values which can get all of us into trouble now when jesus speaks about the blessed i don't think for one minute that he's uh preaching a utopia that's going to happen on the earth in fact i am one who don't believe that it's really ever going to happen on earth that we have this this utopia here however he is giving what you might think of as a parallel universe what would the world actually look like if people really paid attention to his teachings what if everybody really took on this revolutionary mind of christ and began to live it out in the world what would it look like so he presents this radical radical view that really takes our our moral concepts our society and cultural concepts and turns it on its head he says blessed are you who are poor you know you have to scratch your chin a little bit and wonder the poor what's so great about being poor society certainly doesn't love the poor society hates the poor doesn't even want to look at the poor what's so blessed about being poor except that christ is pointing to perhaps a humility of heart that comes from being poor and especially for those who know how to live with very little and when you think about it living in simplicity of life is in many ways a royal road saint francis if it sees he taught this the person who renounced all possessions and lived a life of radical poverty felt at the end of his life that he was the wealthiest person on the face of the earth blessed are you who are poor and then he says blessed are you who are hungry now what could he mean well if you are always filled up and there isn't that little bit of hunger we'd be missing out on the true hunger for the riches of experience of the life the light and the love of god that's our that's our fulfillment that's where we're finally satisfied it's no earthly thing will ever satisfy that deep primal human hunger for the divine so blessed are you who are at least a little hungry now then he says blessed are you who are weeping uh for any of you who have been through grief uh the tragic death of a loved one the stages of grief you know that you're radically altered by it you're not the same before the grief was experienced and you're certainly not the same after human grief has the effect of softening the heart and this is where ever deeper compassion is born so blessed are you who weep good things love and compassion will be coming forth from you in greater and greater measure measure well now he says blessed are you when they hate you when they exclude you they insult you they denounce your name as evil and utter every manner of slander against you because of me well i have plenty of people who hate me and they don't like my personality they don't like my understanding of the gospel they don't like the way i celebrate mass they don't like the way i preach they don't like the way i hold my hands sometimes they don't like a lot of things well why does he say blessed are you when they hate you who likes to be hated i don't i don't like it people write to my bishop and complain about me etc who likes that except that the big teaching that is so important for you and for me is when he says you're blessed you learn what was so prevalent in the first reading hey don't put your self-worth in ordinary people don't look for your happiness in them you know if i were to feed or you or i were to feed on the compliments people give us well we'd be feeling up we'd be feeling great everything's going wonderful but then when the criticism comes people as you know are fickle and can turn on a dime and when then we're the object of their reproach and they want to shame us and do all kinds of things to us say bad things to us then we're down in the dumps and this in today's language is called codependency it's a miserable condition of uh having all of your happiness depend on what other people think of you and jesus is saying you're not blessed when you do that and what's great about the teaching is we are blessed well it doesn't matter what they say of you or what they think of you why because you've built your house on the rock of one who loves you unconditionally unequivocally constantly and without exception that's true foundational godliness this love is the one that you put your stake in you're loved by god you keep returning to that well how blessed are you because when they do insult you as they will when they do harm you and they will you're unaffected because your true source of affirmation comes from god who is always constant but now what about this woe to you who are rich you know i don't think it is so bad to be rich do you honestly it's not necessarily an evil or a bad state to be rich except for those who have bought this awful teaching that was very prevalent at the turn of the century that you work hard very hard and get the money once you've got the money see now you can do the things you want well so then you've got to work twice as hard because now you've got a big mortgage then you have to keep working really really hard because now you've got to pay for the yacht and now you have to keep working and everything is competition achievement and go go go and all of those things and actually you're miserable woe to you uh thomas merton one of the most brilliant spiritual writers of the 20th century had this lovely insight he said that those who buy into that getting rich are like climbing this ladder called success you know you climb and climb and climb but when you get to the top you find out there's nothing there and you've wasted all this time all this energy you've wasted your life but you think there's something up there the whole time but then when you get there you find out that you were wrong there's nothing there so then he says blessed are you who are filled now and the ones who are laughing now and then finally woe to you who are when they are all speaking well of you and you're you're puffed up and now you're really feeling on top of the world and he's really talking about something so common to all of us and that's ego inflation you know the ego gets filled up woe to you who are filled up with yourselves now woe to you when you are laughing and implied and that is that you can now look down in scorn on somebody else because you're so full of self aggrandizement your ego's puffed up and uh you're getting attention you're getting fame everybody's speaking well of you you see good reviews on the newspaper you're just feeling great but woe to you because how fragile that is how fragile that is and again it's like building your house on sand it shifts it shifts and everything comes crashing down jesus is giving very practical advice about how to live your life fully i've come that you may have life have it to the full i have come to give you my joy and that our joy will be complete blessed are you the lord says hopefully the blessed are you and me and we should know better about these other things in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit and so do you believe in god the father the almighty the maker of heaven and earth i do too and do you believe in his son our lord jesus christ who was born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried i do i do too and do you believe that jesus who died rose from the dead that he ascended into heaven he is seated at the right hand of god the father the almighty and to him alone belongs the divine right to judge anyone the living and the dead i do too and do you believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of the saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting thank you i do too this is our faith we celebrate it with great joy on this sixth sunday in ordinary time gathered as a faith community to celebrate god's unfailing love and mercy we now turn to him in our prayer for the church that all who lead and guide us in our faith may be examples of true witnesses to christ's compassion for all we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for peace in our world that god will turn the hearts of those who choose injustice or persecution away from sin and toward life and love we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer that we may be trees planted near the flowing waters of god's grace placing our trust and our hope firmly in the lord we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those who are persecuted for their faith and their witness to jesus that they may have the grace and insight to rejoice in the knowledge that their reward in heaven will be both rich and full we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who are poor who are weeping and hungry and sick and that those who are rich and filled may see and come to their aid and that our prayers may bring them solace we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who have died may they rest in the peace of christ for our loved ones for the sick and the homebound the military law enforcement personnel and all first responders and we remember most especially those for whom we have promised to pray we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god our father we ask you to hear the prayers we bring to you help us to acknowledge your greatness and to serve you with grateful hearts we ask you this through christ our lord amen blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this bread to offer which earth has given and human hands have made it will become the bread of life by the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share on the divinity of christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this wine to offer the fruit of the vine and the work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever lord god we ask you to receive us and to be pleased with the sacrifice we offer you with humble and contrite hearts lord wash away my iniquities and cleanse me from my sins pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name as we celebrate your mysteries o lord with the observance that is your due we humbly ask you that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may profit us for salvation through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in goodness you created man and when he was justly condemned in mercy you redeemed him through christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim [Music] heaven and earth is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] we proclaim your death [Music] [Applause] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and frank our bishop and all those who serve you remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ [Music] through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] [Applause] together we lift up our hearts and pray the beautiful prayer jesus himself taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus you said to the apostles i leave you peace my peace is my gift to you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and grant us the peace and
