40 Facts About EVERY Pokémon Rival and Player Character

champions and today we're going to be highlighting arguably the most important Pokemon characters of them all the player characters and rivals even it's just essentially an avatar for you the player getting into the facts now we of course have to start with red in a Japanese publication titled the official fanbook of Pocket Monsters from 1997 Game Freak hinted at the appearance of bread in gold and silver while he does appear in those games it's obviously intended to be a well kept secret until the end of the game where you meet him indicating that this tease might be alluding to a different role for red that was originally planned for the gen 2 games also in this book Game Freak referred to read as much like his anime counterpart in Japan likely mean that this was going to be his name originally after series creator Satoshi Tajiri before they settled on the name red after the titles of the original gen1 games technically leaf wasn't actually the official name for the female player character in FireRed and LeafGreen until very recently when that name was used on official merchandise for the first time and was also used in Pokemon masters prior to this fan simply called her leaf thanks to some unused data in the games referring to her as such and because it was one of her default names in FireRed and LeafGreen next up is green and while she technically isn't classified as a rival in the games she is similar to one and it's also possible she was going to be a player character at one point too so I thought she qualified to be in the video anyway technically speaking every one of greens Pokemon in let's go evolved with the use of an evolutionary stone as victreebel clefable and nine tails evolved with the leaf stone moonstone and fire stone respectively while Blastoise kangaskhan and Gengar can all mega evolve with mega stones which are essentially a kind of evolutionary stone of their own Blue has an interesting quality about him when it comes to names as not only is his name different depending on whether or not you live in Japan as his name is green in the Japanese games but he's also had a number of interesting default unused and beta names as well in the English version of the games a default name for blue that went unused is Sony clearly referencing Sonia Nintendo's rivalry meanwhile in the original Japanese red and green blues unused default name is Ishihara referencing the now CEO of the Pokemon company suna Kazuki shihara in Japanese blue and yellow his unused name was Korea referencing creatures Inc one of the owners of the Pokemon franchise and during development of pokemon red and green blue was named Kiara which was a reference to him being a Gyarados trainer which he still does use in the final gen 1 games depending on which starter you pick the newest male protagonists from Kanto Chase has an interesting connection Ethan from Johto as both his English and Japanese names were used as optional preset names for Ethan in HeartGold and SoulSilver while most likely just a coincidence it's interesting to note that Elaine's appearance is extremely similar to Hilda's from pokemon black and white as both have a white and reddish pink hat denim short shorts and a black and white top it's even more of an interesting coincidence when you consider that Hilda comes from games that acted as soft reboots of generation 1 which are the basis for the games that Elaine appears in trace along with chase and Elaine all have names themed around movement tying in with the let's go titles of the games they appear in in traces case however his name could also be a reference to the original Kanto rival blue as he fills blues role almost identically and is essentially a tracing of blues character getting into Johto Ethan is unique amongst Pokemon protagonists as he is the only male one to have two female counterparts in Chris and Lyra and also two anime counterparts in Jimmy and Ethan with the latter being due to the fact that Ethan was not his canon name until HeartGold and SoulSilver release chris's counterpart in the anime is marina who debuted in the legend of thunder TV special which also served as the beginning of the pokémon chronicles series originally airing in Japan in 2001 marina states in the special that her goal is to be a Pokemon idol who seemed to have very similar attributes to coordinators which had not yet debuted at that time given that this was only about a year before Ruby and sapphires release however it's possible that this was a very subtle nod at what was to come for the series furthermore marinas desire to be a Pokemon idol came before the idol trainer class even existed which actually debuted in generation 4 which just so happens to be the time that marina made a cameo appearance in the anime as a pokémon coordinator meaning all of this was very likely intent Lyra gets her name from lyre an instrument which is essentially a small handheld harp meanwhile Ethan whose name we previously mentioned was not officially stated or made canon till heartgold SoulSilver when light was introduced gets his name from a biblical figure who is believed to have played the symbol alongside lyre and harp players in King David's court showing an unusually religious inspiration for these two characters names in HeartGold and SoulSilver silver is shown having two different eye colors as in his artwork his eyes are gray but in the intro of the games they are red and an early art of him from generation - he is also seen with a houndoom which he does not use possibly meaning that he was originally meant to have one on his team in the Pokemon adventures manga it's specified that Brendan's birthday is July 2nd the birthstone for July is the Ruby which is also one of the games he debuted and is also his name in the manga as well when battling Mae and Pokemon emerald in rustboro city she will use a torkoal if the player picked Torchic as their starter this torkoal never appears again after this battle and may is the only one who uses it Brendan will use a slugma instead in the same situation which stays on his team throughout the game unlike Mays torkoal making for a very odd circumstance in the original ruby sapphire and emerald there are a couple interesting circumstances that can come out of the catching tutorial with wally first it is possible for the Ralts that he encounters to be shiny using the same odds as usual although it will not stay shiny afterwards it's also possible for wally to faint the Ralph's during the battle under a very specific set of circumstances and it comes out to a roughly 1 in 8,000 574 chance of happening which is actually even less likely than the shiny scenario as the odds there are 1 in 8,192 Lucas makes a very brief appearance in the anime in Giratina and the sky warrior with a design that essentially combines his appearance in diamond a pearl with the coloration of his lon in platinum furthermore he uses a mag mortar in this cameo that is voiced by Bill Rogers who in addition to voicing a number of other characters in the anime such as Barack he also provides the voice for King roam in the Legend of Zelda breath of the wild Don's name in Japanese is Hikari and in the anime her rifle Zoey's name is Nozomi these just so happened to also be the names of two train services in Japan with the Nozomi being faster than the Hikari which is likely symbolized by the fact that Zoe is usually one step ahead of dawn when it comes to Pokemon coordinating Berry's name in Japanese is Jun which while coming from junichi Masuda is also noteworthy because the birthstone of the month of June is the Pearl which is the namesake of one of the games he debuts in and is also one of his default names depending on which version of the game you're playing Hilbert has been noted as having one of the goofiest names of any of the player characters in Pokemon and to make matters worse he was seen with several pre-release names that were so much better in various pre-release media for black and white Hilbert was seen with the names black Blair and Kudo the Japanese word for black all of which would have been way cooler in my opinion than Hilbert Hilda also had some arguably better pre-release names as well as pre-release material had her named as white Whitley and Shiro the Japanese word for white also an interesting quirk is that both Hilbert and Hilda's names come from a German word meaning battle meanwhile in the very next generation Caleb and Serena get their names from the words calm and serene practically the exact opposite in terms of inspiration Sharon has a bit of dialogue where he takes note of the player not taking any damage in their first battle with Bianca if the player is actually able to pull this off however given that it's one of the very first battles of the game it is extremely hard to pull off and therefore the dialogue is almost impossible to legitimately trigger within the game speaking of Bianca when pokemon black and white were first released Bianca was widely reported to actually be the champion of the pokémon league in those games even though that was completely untrue this was likely due to black and white beans similar to red and blue in many respects and her being a rival to the player many people also suspected this as they thought her clumsy nature was just a ploy to divert the player from this possibility Nate along with Rosa are the first player characters to receive their starter Pokemon from someone other than the professor a trend that interestingly enough would continue to occur in nearly every Pokemon game since it's very possible that Rosa's visor is a small nod to her univ and predecessor hilda as it shares the exact same colors with illnes hat when usually player characters are very distinct from one another when it comes to their designs in black and white two's challenge mode Hugh's Pokemon can actually level down from one battle to the next as his starter Elemental monkey and boon pheasant our levels 45 43 and 43 when battled in undal a town but when he battles alongside you in la Canosa town all three pokemon are two levels lower this is likely a trait of the harder challenge mode since in the second battle hue is on your side instead of against you but still interesting to know nevertheless a nice subtle detail having to do with Calum is the fact that he has a meowstic on his team as your rival more specifically the male form while his female counterpart serena has the female form meowstic when she takes the role of rival interestingly serena is the first travelling companion of ashe to not have her bike shocked or be shocked herself by pikachu at the beginning of all of their series misty may and dawn all had their bikes shocked while Bonnie and iris were hit directly by Pikachu since the Sun and Moon series also didn't see ash traditionally travel around the enola region and he does not have a female companion in the sword and shield anime to this point this also makes her the old want to achieve this feat and it is likely a subtle nod to her and ashes romance throughout the series meanwhile Shauna is the first rival of one of Ash's female companions to be based on an in-game character true to his character as a dancer every one of tierno's pokemon in every battle you face him in has at least one dancing move using moves like swords dance petal dance and feather dance Trevor along with Shauna battles the player less than any other rival with only two battles occurring with him throughout the entire game and one of those being a double battle alongside tierno moving on to a Lola now we know in the games that both Elio and Selene are originally from the Kanto region but in the Pokemon adventures manga it's specified that Elio is originally from Cinnabar Island more specifically Selene just like Elio was given a redesign in ultra Sun and ultra moon however there is concept art that shows a slightly different look for her in her redesign before it ended up the way it is in the final games essentially it uses her hairstyle from Sun and Moon with her ultra Sun and ultra moon outfit at this point it's pretty common knowledge that most characters in Pokemon are named after various flowers and plants well to show you how extensive this naming scheme can be sometimes how gets his name from the Hawaiian variation of the sea hibiscus who is part of a family whose common name is the Malo and many Mallos also belong to the genus known as malva all three of which are the direct names of characters from generations 6 & 7 gladion was largely seen by fans as the edgiest or most antagonistic rivals since silver and Gen 2 when he was first revealed so it possibly comes as no coincidence that gladion and silver have some things in common both our rivals both stole their first pokemon a joto starter for silver and type null for gladion and they are both children of main antagonists Giovanni for silver and loose a mean for gladion Victor's official uniform number has some in meaning to it as an official artwork for the games his jersey number is 227 which is the date that pokemon red and green first released in Japan meanwhile in the Pokemon adventures manga his uniform number is 808 which is also the date that bean of August 8th that the first volume of Pokemon Adventures was released in Japan a very nice detail of glorious design are her Scottish tartan socks and Tam O'Shanter hat these little details make all of the sense in the world for a uk-based region but what makes it even better is that Galler is essentially the UK flipped upside-down which puts Scotland on the southern end which is exactly where Gloria lives and Galler in the town of post wit alright so when it comes to hop this hasn't been stated officially so I can't technically say it's a fact but I think it's convincing enough to bring up and is really cool if true if you look closely at hops hair especially in his artwork you can see that his hair actually resembles a crown his bangs represent the outer rim of a crown and on the top of his head it comes to five separate points just like a crown would if intentional this is a nice little nod to the UK inspirations of sword and shield but it goes even deeper his brother Leon champion of the gala region is very clearly the in effect King here as he wears a large regal cape and a hat with a crown shape on the bottom side of the brim that faces upward so with Leon playing the role of King that would essentially make hop the prince which would explain further why he might have this element in his design and why it's a lot more subtle than the elements in Leon's design can't say a hundred percent if this is all legit but the evidence does add up and if true is insanely cool when it comes to Marnie she has a fairly unique name but she's actually not the only Pokemon character with the name Marnie believe it or not Marnie is also the name of the daughter of a Nurse Joy who appeared in the diamond and pearl arc of the anime so not only is that cool but it also clearly means that Sinnoh is confirmed an interesting thing about bead is that he is the only character whose signature completely changes between their regular and rare league cards this is likely a nod and a very nice touch to the fact that on beads rare league card it mentions that he no longer refuses to give autographs and if you look at the signatures themselves on the standard card it's just a bunch of scribbles likely reflecting beads refusal of autographs but on the rare card there is a cleanly written signature illustrating the change of heart that his card referred to pokemon sword and shield are the very first games to have rivals with a type specialty and thanks to both Clara and Avery being classified as rivals its introduced a whopping four of them so far and thanks to being described as rivals in the recent pokemon direct Avery along with Clara are the very first rivals in the series to be version exclusive and there you have it everyone thank you so much for watching this video
