i recently answered a question on how to build a base in the open and realize many new players are drawn to the safety of caves or maps with one to two choke points and it makes sense this game is merciless on harder difficulties if you don't know how to layer up this guide will be a quick introduction on what i believe are the three most important things when building a base in the open number one the onion this is single-handedly the most important you need to accept that as you expand raiders and mechs can and will make quick work of even a double stone wall having your walls spread far apart and layered like an onion will not only serve as protection but can also confuse the ai and give you precious time to organize your troops think of building your base like a castle in the federal age layer a you have your food storage barracks medical and anything else you deem essential this is important because air raids are a possibility and you want your important things in a small surface area possible layer b has anything important but not critical to survival safe from any exterior perimeter breaches but still not clogging up your core this is where the melee fighting will take place close tight quarters where collateral damage is acceptable i usually like to have my farms here layer c has everything that takes up a lot of room and is not necessary for short term survival this is your manhunting pack wall this could be anything from a tree farm to prisoner and slave pens or animals that you hate your defense here is the weakest but who cares you didn't like that chicken anyways number two razor blades in the onion you're giving your worst enemy your onion and you want every bite to hurt make sure that your core layer has most razors don't waste your turrets on spots where they may never see an enemy clump up all those turrets and key spots in a and b and leave c for passive defenses such as traps unless you are loaded with components be smart where you place your expensive defenses number three mess with tynan's coding back in early rim world the hardest difficulty was called extreme this was easily manageable with leaving an open path to your base that was lined to the brim with spike traps he has now adapted to the cheese and made the coating better and also created different raids that will ignore the easiest path but the end of the day is just coding by placing walls and layers in confusing patterns the ai will have non-optimal pathing to be fair to tynan in real life if you drill through a wall only to find another behind it you would be confused as well not every wall has to have a distinct purpose some are there just to slow down the enemy what is critical is that you have the time to react and losing a few wood or stone is completely worth it that's it i hope you enjoyed this guide and found it useful if you want to see more content be sure to subscribe thanks for watching
