3 Card 4 Monte (Card Magic) ~ An In Depth Tutorial

did you know that three-card Monte was originally created specifically for swindling people out of their money and that there is no legitimate three-card or for card or any card money where you actually have a chance of winning and that by design it's a con right from the get-go please allow me the opportunity to share with you my first experience with three-card Monte I saw this guy speaking very loud he had four cards and was drawing a crowd he'd say double your money it's easy to win and then he'd smile or the funny little grin I have three black tens and a Red King and how much money did you bring I said I have the money I'll play the game he said step right up I'm glad you came all you have to do is find the red and he began to make his spread you can win or you can lose it all depends on which card you choose I'll take away one just for fun and now you can see there's only three hey diddle-diddle it's in the middle now my money was on the table it was too late to quit he began mixing up the cards a little bit jingling worse the king I said it's in the middle I watched the mix and I didn't see any tricks he said sorry but you lose this card is a 10 the other two cards are a 10 and a 10 again the king is over here in the rear where it seems to always up here it's ok we'll play again and this time don't pick a 10 I'll take away one just for fun now you can see there's only three hey diddle-diddle it's in the middle he mixed them face-up this time around so the red King could be easily found jingling where's the King now this guy was smooth and very clean but I said it's in the middle in between he said sorry but you lose this card is a 10 the other two cards are a 10 and a 10 again the king is over here in the rear where it seems to always appear now if you want to win your money back we'll play one more time and don't pick black I'll take away one just for fun now you can see there's only three hey diddle-diddle it's in the middle he mix them again pretty much the same but I was catching on to his little game Jing Ling where's the king he'd sing I said it's over here in the rear where it seems to always appear he said sorry but you lose again this card is a black 10 he should have picked the middle this time you wouldn't owe me a single dime now before I go and collect my dough I'll reveal a couple things you could have selected any one of these three red kings I hope you enjoyed that and I'm gonna show you how to do it this routine is based on Jo writings the only three-card trick in the world using four cards it's not the only one now because many variations have been created by other magicians over the years including sidewalk shuffle poor man's Monty and routines using jumbo size cards the routine you just watched is my own variation I kept to the original plot but I changed the handling so it looks less complicated to the viewer and other than borrowing a couple lines I wrote a new pattern it's more like a poem patter now before we get into the tutorial part just remember if you don't want to know the secrets then watch no further because once you do know you can't unknow we'll give a couple seconds for those who don't want to know okay here we go this routine uses for regular cards no gimmick cards no extra hidden cards you'll need two black tens and two red kings you can use clubs or spades just as long as they match such as to tens of spades are to tens of clubs same thing with the Kings two diamonds or two hearts the reason for using tens and Kings is because the black tens have a lot of black and the red Kings have a lot of red plus the Kings or court cards which contrasts with non court cards and most importantly the ten and the King are part of the patter there's only two moves you need to know and they're fairly easy to learn and perform I'll show the moves first then we'll go through the handling and the pattern from start to finish the first move is a double lift from a packet of three cards one of the easiest double lifts and card magic square the cards up you're going to put pressure right here with your thumb and you're gonna smear two cards over just a little bit you can see right there this is two cards smear them over you're going to grab it right here once you grab it you can let go here pull it out line these up and flip it over do the same thing again smear two cards over a little bit just enough to grab it here line it up and flip it over now you do it now a single lift is similar you're gonna hold the cards right here in this little crease and your finger so when you push one card over your finger holds retains these other two cards so this is a double lift this is a single lift you want them both to look the same double single this is the second move it's super easy you're gonna be holding three cards you have the two tens on the bottom and a king on the top you're gonna show all these as tens I'm going to pull that middle card out and show the ten when you place it back don't place it back in the same position bring it real close to this card and down just a little bit and when you come to grab this card they're going to reposition just lightly so when you pull this card up the timing has to be just right soon as they see this card you're gonna switch a little bit just like that now in the performance I brought this card in front just a little bit so you can see it but if you're doing this live all you have to do is bring this card over here they're gonna look at that card you switch it nobody's gonna see it only in a video where you can rewind it and watch it again and so you show that you switch it that card goes on the bottom and you show the other ten looks like three tens one more thing you're gonna have to be able to do when you're holding these cards normally you're gonna hold them like this but in this case you're going to be holding them up a little bit so these three fingers are going to be controlling these cards and these two fingers are going to be independent holding this card yeah so you sort of have to know how to do the Vulcan live long and prosper this is the order you start off with super easy to remember Kings on the top tens on the bottom meaning this is the top that's the bottom now I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to learn and memorize your pattern to perform with it's just as important as learning the handling otherwise [Music] okay enough of that remaining silent is not an option for this routine and simply mimicking your actions with ad-lib words can ruin any perfectly handled performance I've included the pattern in the description these are the sequence of moves to do for this routine start with the tens on the bottom Kings on the top do a single lift place the King down to a double lip show the ten double lift place the King down single lift show the ten single lifts show the ten you've hidden that King there pick them up make sure when you hold them make sure they're up slightly because you're gonna bring this King and you're gonna place it right there now you do you spread next you're going to take this card and remember always spread to the right take this card which is the King and you got to put it backwards remember this King is facing forward you're going to replace it and take this King out place it in the middle do a nice spread let it stick up just a little bit see when you bring it up it's very obvious it's two tens and a king and the King is in the middle square them up push the King down now you're gonna do a count now you see how I'm holding here I have to keep holding this card here and when I do this count I am using the bottom of the or the side of this finger just to sort of put right there so what I'm holding it I can keep them nice and square this is the count you do you're gonna peel off a single card just push pull this one card and push two cards every single card single card now you're gonna push two cards over and do a double looks the same then spread them out you're gonna reveal that middle card to be a ten place it back just like I showed you before show your other ten switch I'm turning it like this so you can see you don't want to go that far you're gonna be going like that this goes on the bottom and then show your other ten it goes on the top then reveal this card by turning it over showing it's the king place it back now do your spread spread to the right pull this card out that's the King again you're gonna do the same thing replace it pull this one place it in the middle do a nice spread pull it up and show you can see we're right square them up slide the King down in the middle this time you're gonna do it face up you're gonna peel a single card the ten place it on the bottom keep them nice and square do a double push two cards over put them on the bottom square them up do another double push two cards over and then flip the whole thing over once again you showed the middle cards be a ten place it back just like before show this ten switch place that King which is the one you slid over see that's actually the King and then when you show this last one which is the ten instead of putting it on the top this time it goes on the bottom reveal the King to be over here and then do your spread again to the right to discard which now it's the ten gets replaced here the King now you can't put it in like this we're gonna do this we're gonna put the King here on top of this card hold them together and show them you can see it's a tenon ten and a king don't flash this this is a king so you're gonna you're gonna place that card you're going to show it bring it back down and place this card do the same thing as you did before and then slide your King down now this count is easy you're just going to take one card one card and spread now this time you're going to reveal this card first and show the ten so it's a black 10th toss it down reveal the middle card to be the king you could have picked the middle this time you a single dime square the pack up continue with the patter you're gonna do a double lift show the king double lift turn it over place the 10 down single lip show the king now I like to separate them and bring them over like this because it's this last king that is the clincher right there when you see
