you all and with your spirit let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen [Applause] foreign foreign um foreign and over in earl walker oh [Music] oh [Music] allah [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] oh [Music] go [Music] foreign [Music] now [Music] be [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] the [Music] [Music] is [Music] the car [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you oh lord jesus said to his disciples be careful not to berate your good deeds before men to attract their nucleus by doing this you will lose all reward from your father in heaven so when you give arms do not have it trumpeted before you this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets the vein man's admiration i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you give arms your left hand must not know what your right hand is doing your arms giving must be secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you and when you pray do not imitate the hypocrites they love to see their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you pray go to your private room and when you have shut your door pray to your father who is in that secret place and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you when you fast do not put on a gloomy bloke as the hypocrites do they pull long faces to let men know they are fasting i tell you solemnly they have their reward but when you first put oil on your head and wash your face so that no one will know you are fasting except your father who sees all that is done in secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ for our reflections today i will focus on three points today's ash venice day begins the season of lent so what is the purpose of land there are different ways of expressing it but simply put is this to help us to love the lord our god with all our heart all our minds all our soul it's a season for repentance and renewal renewal in the life of the spirit as wednesday opens with the blessing and imposition of ashes we are reminded remember you are dust and to dust you were returned oh we are challenged turn away from your sin and believe in the gospel the ashes remind us of our human fragility and the impermanence of our life the cross on our forehead symbolizes the regaining of our lost dignity and friendship with god so we are called upon to regain the lost graces during this season through a process of repentance and renewal but for today's imposition of the ashes we won't mock the cross on your forehead for reason which you know very well we will sprinkle the ashes on top of your head afterwards then in the gospel jesus teaches that renewal comes through the practice of three basic spiritual disciplines arms giving prayer and fasting this three spiritual practice sum of the challenge of the season in the world ash a s age a is for unscathing we practice love and compassion for our less fortunate brothers and sisters and attend to their needs they practice our traditional corporal and spiritual works of mercy s is for sacrifice that underlies fasting we mortified ourselves we modified our bodies which grave for human pleasure and comfort and convenience so as to find our true pleasure and happiness in loving and serving god and god alone when we fall and then fueled the hunger and curse we pray with our body it is easy to pray with our words but when we pray not only with our words but also with our body we are praying with our whole person in our self-denial we seek to be in solitarity with the poor and share our blessings with them but beside body fasting another kind of force is what we call mental fasting our minds are filled with thoughts all kinds of thoughts feelings and emotions so sisters and brothers why not twice a day twice a day for 10 minutes 15 minutes 20 minutes because since our mind is always on the switch on mood switch on mood twice a day we change it to a switch of mood the best don't think we think too much our minds filled with thoughts images emotions and so on this is a practice of detoxing our mind so not only our body need to be detoxed our mind also needs to be detoxed so in the correct in the process of detoxing or purifying our body and mind of all the toxic within us we also detox and purified our spirit so we call this the practice of meditation age is for holiness that is nurture by prayer to be holy is to be in loving fellowship with jesus it is to make jesus the center of our lives so in prayer we try to align our lives to jesus and make him rule over every areas of our life so the church fathers will say if we pray fast if we fast show mercy but then during the time of jesus it is taken for granted that the jews practice these so-called free pillars of jewish piety arms giving prayer and fasting so jesus took it for granted that they practice all these things so in today's gospel actually jesus reminds the disciples to see that the practice with the right motivation so we are invited to examine our conscience as we practice these three basic expressions of poetry why examine because we can do these things in a very mechanical way if that is the case no effect no benefits or verse only to be seen to be known and thought of as a good buyers observant believers praying arms giving fasting all this are good are very good they are essential they are good in themselves but they should not be performed just to impress people and to be praised and admired by them we are seeking the glory which is due to god and god alone and that is what we call rain glory often this motive is hidden from our consciousness because it is unconscious so jesus insists on the right motivation to please the heavenly father alone only the father in fact can give the reward that loves to give alms pray and false for sure to impress people hence is reward on earth but not in heaven thus the legend season is an opportunity for us to purify our motives and intensified our desires to please the heavenly father in everything we do and not to please others and not to please ourselves because the danger is always of doing a good work with the intention of being known of being seen just to impress people and to be admired and praised by them this is ego's satisfaction sometimes in malaysia only for shocks and tearing so we should not seek reward for our good works not from people but from the heavenly father who knows very well what we need and when we do these things in secret god sees them and blesses us unto eternal life jesus calls those who seek public recognition and praise hypocrites which literally means play acting actors when we seek attention and praise from the public for any good works we do not meet god's standard which is purity of intentions and purity of god man is a social being living and acting in a community so good as well as back actions are not done in isolation they are seen and no matter how hidden covered x will eventually be revealed however our actions may be motivated by an intention other than perceived by other people so sisters and brothers let us be mindful it's a mindful living of a habit serum which means be aware of our motivations in everything we do cultivate purity of heart through the daily practice of silent contemplative prayer or christian meditation our habit number six and you will experience purification and renewal of the heart so this is purification from inside out is not external amen brothers and sisters that is humbly asked god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penitents o god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance let your lend your merciful year to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes dead as they follow the lantern observances they may be worthy to come with mind speak pure to celebrate the past mystery of your son through [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] pray sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord the true works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful evade the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds make pure so they more eagerly intent on prayer and on the books of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with angels at archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hopes and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as we don't end we acclaim [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] who comes in the of the lord [Music] [Music] [Applause] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy day for these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poorer for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have helped us worthy to be in your presence administered to you humbly we pray the partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis of a poem and julian of a bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of their resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy
