[Music] let us begin with three verses of my god accept i can't accept my heart this day and make it holy [Music] decline before the cross of him who died beforehand let every sin be crucified [Music] [Music] [Music] thy face and were the ship at thy throne [Music] in the name of the father and to the son and unto the holy spirit the lord be with you i ask you to think of this lent as a time of great opportunity opportunity opportunity to get things right where it really counts within we can't control the world we can offer our prayers places like ukraine terrible let's start within and get the tensions the wars within under control so that we can be christ in our world his ambassadors that's what lent is about dear people i said say this mouse for a special intention that's just been given me grant oh lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever and there's some ashes in front of us here so um dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he is pleased to bless with abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penitence we pray oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants through these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our lord let us sit down now there's no formal penitential act at the beginning because of course your penitential act is the receiving of ashes after the homily a reading from the prophet joel now now it is the lord who speaks come back to me with all your heart fasting weeping mourning let your hearts be broken not your garments torn turn to the lord your god again for he is all tenderness and compassion slow to anger rich in graciousness and ready to relent who knows if he will not turn again will not relent will not leave a blessing as he passes oblation and libation for the lord your god sound the trumpet in zion order a fast proclaim a solemn assembly call the people together summon the community assemble the elders gather the children even the infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his bedroom and the bride her alcove between vestibule and altar let the priests the ministers of the lord lament let them say spare your people lord do not make your heritage a thing of shame by word for the nations why should it be said among the nations where is your god then the lord jealous on behalf of his land took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned have mercy on us so lord for we have sinned have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion blot out my offense o wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned my offenses truly i know them my sin is always before me against you you alone have i sinned what is evil in your sight i have done have mercy on us so lord for we have sinned a pure heart create form your god put a steadfast spirit within me do not cast me away from your presence nor deprive me of your holy spirit have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned give me again the joy of your help with the spirit of further sustain me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians we are ambassadors for christ it is as though we were appealing through it is as though god were appealing through us and the appeal that we make in christ's name is he reconciled be reconciled to god for the sake for our sake god made the sinless one into sin so that in him we might become the goodness of god as his fellow workers we beg you once again not to neglect the grace of god that you have received for he says at the favorable time i have listened to you on the day of salvation i came to your help well now is the favorable time this is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god praise to you all christ our savior word of the father calling us to life son of god who leads us to freedom glory to you lord jesus christ a pure heart create for me o god and give me again the joy of your help praise to you o christ our savior word of the father calling us to lie son of god who leads us to freedom glory to you lord jesus christ the lord be with you a reading from the gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice by doing this you will lose all reward from your father in heaven so when you give arms do not have it trumpeted before you this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win men's admiration i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you give arms your left hand must not know what your right is doing your arms giving must be secret and your father who sees all that he's done in secret will reward you and when you pray do not imitate the hypocrites they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them i tell you solemnly they've had their reward but when you pray go to your private room and when you have shut your door pray to your father who is in that secret place and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you when you fast do not put on the gloomy look as the hypocrites do they pull long faces to let men know they're fasting i tell you solemnly they've had their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that no one will know you are fasting except your father who sees all that is done in secret and your father who sees all that he's done in secret will reward you the gospel of the lord i once knew um one of the sisters or nuns from uh um stan brook abbey and maria maria balding and she was lovely uh uh very lively and she gave me some excellent advice by the way spiritual advice i still remember it my mother confessor as it were but uh leaving that to one side she said you know at the beginning of lent the whole abby is miserable and and and they said but once we've got the idea of it once we throw ourselves into it she said suddenly something cleans up and purifies inside and by the end of lent we're rejoicing a little lesson for us all the eh so let's get stuck in okay get stuck in whatever way you can 150 000 things in our newsletter to do and even you know the matter of fasting some of us say oh past the age is it as if it's a rule no you just fast from something you say to the lord within my limits what can i do just to get my life under control she lent us the time for getting our priorities right in life we repent which means turn around from dead end things or things that are not bad in themselves but taking over our lives and turned towards the priorities that last things that are permanent i mean this last year you know up to the end of the real covered threat we've realized that sometimes our priorities can change what we thought was important was less important so so invent getting our priorities right putting our spiritual life in order getting the spiritual things that last on the list head up on the list is so important we try to free ourselves most particularly from being distracted i think we live in an age of distraction don't we the first thing people do when they can't think of anything to do is get their mobile phone out and do something twiddle around with it get some distraction in case i might be thinking for myself oh danger frightening i think that's the first thing isn't it pretty quiet time but um uh going to a private room as our lord said get a bit of prayer in that means just talking to god or not if he's your friend just go and visit him in your heart okay but um so often we're getting distracted from our good intentions and we're going to get bombarded by these distractions aren't we because it's lent we all know this what do we do well i think what happens is this we've got a good intention going on some business and then we pass something like higginson's pie shop you know meat pies and all that for those who have not been to grange one of the glorious of grange uh and this this this smell wafts out glorious doesn't it and and and you you see people walking past and you know they're fixed on something and then suddenly something happens and they go and and after a few pauses they whip into the pie shop and come out with something rather nice in in a paper bag now okay that's us that's us all the time isn't it let's face it now i'm not saying higginson's pies are bad they're lovely i'm saying you can't the cheese and onion pie's best called uh yeah yeah yeah of course well yeah yeah it all depends what you i mean there are lots of good things anyway it all smells very nice but hey hey look everybody look uh they've got distracted they've probably forgotten why why did it come out by the time they've got their higginson's pie or cheese and something onion pie um but um now if we allow these distractions to pile up and they do all the little passing pleasures instead of the spiritual certainties our life gets distorted because we are body and soul and that's the important thing okay so frankly we've got things more important to do as christians we have a mission a purpose which gives deepest satisfaction that anybody will ever know we have permanent personal relationship with jesus the lord of life do we even talk to him all this is good news but also as a paul reminds us ambassadors gotta remember my main job walking down the street is to represent christ you have to be disciplined yet warm charitable people who shows that there is another way of living with purpose so lent is a time for making up for the negligences of pastimes get that right negligences in christian life in living in living the great privilege of being a christian and um historically prayer fasting good deeds have all contributed to our getting back on track where we've lost it a bit fasting control your life rather than being controlled prayer links to jesus we find the real person our companion who's the way the truth and the life and arms they take us out of ourselves make us worry less about me me me but more about them than them let's do this lent well let's do it properly and i'm sure you can reward yourself at the end of lent with all sorts of higgins and spies and down dear brothers and sisters the lord jesus does not desire the death of any sinner but their conversion we pray that you hear our prayers that we who acknowledge we are but ashes and will return to dust made through steadfast observance of lent gain pardon for sins newness of life after the likeness of your risen son who lives and reigns forever and ever and now i will ask you to come forward to receive the ashes jackie repent and believe the good news repent and believe the good lord and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you lord lord wash away my iniquity cleanse me from my sin pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and jaws may be acceptable to god the almighty father [Music] as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleansed from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us to imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries but on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me of the history of faith we proclaim your debtor lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the ablation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one
