christians have observed with great devotion the time of our lord's passion and resurrection and prepared for this by a season of penitence and fasting by carefully keeping these days christians take to heart the call to repentance and the assurance of forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel and so grow in faith and in devotion to our lord i invite you then in the name of the church to the observance of the holy land by self-examination and repentance by prayer fasting and self-denial and by reading and meditating on god's holy word holy god holy and strong holy and immortal have mercy upon us let us pray for grace to keep lent faithfully almighty and everlasting god you had nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent create and making us new and contrived hearts that we worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our righteousness may receive from you the god of all mercy perfect remission and forgiveness through jesus christ your son our lord who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god now and forever amen please be seated for the readings the old testament reading from prophet joel chapter 2 verses 1 to 2 and continue from verses 12 to 17. blow the trumpet sound the alam on zion god sacred hill tremble people of judah the day of the lord is coming soon it will be a dark and gloomy day a black and cloudy day the great army of locusts advances like darkness spreading over the mountains there has never been anything like it and there never will be again but even now says the lord repent sincerely and return to me with fasting and weeping and mourning let your broken heart show your sorrow tearing your clothes is not enough come back to the lord your god he is kind and full of mercy he is passion and keeps his promise he is always ready to forgive and not punish perhaps the lord your god will change his mind and bless you with abundant crops then you can offer him grain and wine blow the trumpet on mount zion give orders for fast and call an assembly gather the people together prepare them for a sacred meeting bring the old people gather the children and the babies too even newly married couples must leave their homes and come the priests serving the lord between the altar and the entrance of the temple must weep and pray have pity on your people lord do not let other nations despise and mock us by saying where is your god this is the word of the lord the epistle reading from paul's second letter to the corinthians chapter 5 verses 20 b to chapter 6 verses 10. we plead on christ's behalf let god change you from enemies into his friends christ was without sin but for our sake god made him share our sin in order that in union with him we might share the righteousness of god in our work together with god then we beg you who have received god's grace not to let it be wasted hear what god says when the time came for me to show you favor i heard you when the day arrived for me to save you i help you listen this is the hour to receive god's favor today is the day to be safe we do not want anyone to find forth with our work so we try not to put obstacles in anyone's way instead in everything we do we show that we are god's servants by patiently enduring troubles hardships and difficulties we have been beaten jailed and mocked we have been overworked and have gone without sleep or food by our purity knowledge patient and kindness we have shown ourselves to god's servant by the holy spirit by our true love by our message of truth and by the power of god we have righteousness as our weapon both to attack and to defend ourselves we are honor and disgrace we are insulted and praised we are treated as liars yet we speak the truth as unknown yet we are known by all as though we were dead but as you see we live on although punished we are not killed although saturn we are always glad we seem poor but we make many people rich we seem to have nothing yet we really possess everything this is the word of the god [Music] [Music] [Music] here the holy gospel of our lord jesus christ according to saint matthew chapter 6 verses 1 to 6 and verses 16 to 21 glory to christ make certain you do not perform your religious duties in public so that people will see what you do if you do these things publicly you will not have any reward from your father in heaven so when you give something to a needy person do not make a big show of it as the hypocrites do in the houses of worship and on the streets they do it so that people will praise them i assure you they have already been paid in full but when you help a needy person do it in such a way that even your closest friend will not know about it then you will be a private matter and your father who sees what you do in private will reward you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites they love to stand up and pray in the houses of worship and on the street corners so that everyone will see them i assure you they have already been paid in full but when you pray go to your room close the door and pray to your father who is unseen and your father who sees what you do in private will reward you verse 16 and when you fast do not put on the sad face as the hypocrites do they neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting i assure you they have already been painted full when you go without food wash your face and cope your hair so that others cannot know that you are fasting only your father who is unseen will know and your father who sees what you do in private will reward you do not store riches for yourselves here on earth when both and rust destroy and robbers break in and steal instead store up reaches for yourselves in heaven where moth and rust cannot destroy and robbers cannot break in and steal for your heart will always be where your riches are this is the gospel of christ [Music] [Music] may the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable to you o lord our strength and our redeemer seated please first of all a very good evening to all of you sisters brothers in christ welcome to this our ash wednesday service today is ash wednesday which marks the beginning of the penitential lantern season or the beginning of our lantern observance every year we observe the season of land and we have as one is the service and we should be able to understand the meaning of ash wednesday as well as the meaning of land and the purpose of this season in our christian faith what i'm going to share this evening is just to refresh your memory of what ash wednesday and land is all about and what is the purpose of this season in our christian faith usually we will have two parts in the service the first part of the service should be the imposition of the ashes the ashes taken from palm crosses in last year palm sunday the ashes is placed on the forehead of the congregation who came to the service as a symbolic symbolic act of being penitent i underlined the word symbolic act of being penitent according to the note in the service book we use for ash wednesday we have these words the ancient custom was for parishioners to go to private confession in church and later to be given absolution by the priests on the day or before ash wednesday also in the service book it says the first day of land is called ash wednesday because it is the customs for the ages obtained from burning some of the previous year's farm crosses to be blazed and put on the foreheads of the congregation again is a sign of penitence penitence means action of showing sorrow regret for having done wrong some people like to ask why put on ashes why don't we just bow down and confess our sins and that is all it's no necessity for us to impose the issues on our forehead in our church this has been a regular practice this is our tradition and this is biblical some said it is not biblical it is biblical it was a regular practice in the old testament time the imposition of ashes if you look at nehemiah chapter 9 verse 1 verses 1 and followings on the 24th day of the same month the israelites gathered together fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their foreheads they stood in their places and confessed their sins the wickedness of their fathers the israelites fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their foreheads nehemiah chapter 9 it is biblical and also in the book of psalms chapter 35 verse 13 says yet when they were ill i put on sackcloth and humble myself with fasting here we have the record of david pleading with the lord for his people with sackcloth and humble himself with fasting another reference in the old testament the book of daniel chapter 9 verses 2 to 4 in the first year of his reign i daniel understood from the scriptures according to the word of the lord given to jeremiah the prophet that the desolation of jerusalem would last 70 years so i turned to the lord god and pleaded with him in prayer and petition in fasting and in secloaf and ages i pray to the lord my god and confess three references in the old testament but not only in the old testament we have reference of that in the new testament this is our lord himself in matthew chapter 11 verse 21 so it's not just old testament it is new testament our lord said war to you horizon war ii bethsaida if the miracles they were performing you had been performed entire and sidon they would have repented logo in sackcloth and ashes gospel according to saint matthew chapter 11 verse 21 it is biblical the imposition of ashes on our forehead well friends we have not been doing this for the last two years because of the covenant 19 pandemic and this year we have decided to go back to the usual pre usual practice especially for those fully visited that is we have the imposition of the ashes on our forehead so that is the first part of the service on ash wednesday and we come to land again as i've said we have heard about land all these years and what we're supposed to do during land you have heard about that so just to refresh again our memory what is learn all about this is important not just the imposition of essays on our forehead that is important symbolic sign [Music] symbol we have many symbols in the church but more important i want us to look at this the meaning of land land is a time that we should examine our spiritual walk our spiritual life we should examine ourselves on how many times we have failed the lord that we have turned our back to him this is the purpose of land that we are to re-examine ourselves land is not the time for us to do something extra a lot of people like to think like that we should do more during land yes of course but that should not be the purpose land is not the time for us to do something extra what we encourage to do during land we should be also doing it in other days of the year that is on spiritual disciplines we should exercise we should practice spiritual disciplines in other times of the year but more important during land spiritual disciplines of prayer fasting repentance giving and scripture or holy reading is important but why is it during land we put a lot of emphasis because we need to prepare ourselves for the festival of easter because easter is a very important festival to us so we need a season we need time whereby we can prepare ourselves our hearts our minds our very our inner being for this important festival of easter therefore we have land and so before christmas we have the season of advent to prepare ourselves for christmas because christmas is another important festival in our christian faith so land and advent have more or less the same purpose in our christian life especially in our practice in the churches aglican so that when the festival of easter come or the festival of christmas come it will not just be like that come and go when festival of easter come it will be more meaningful to us if we have prepared ourselves by practicing the spiritual disciplines that i've mentioned of prayer fasting etc so friends a lord use a very strong word in matthew 11 21 concerning the needs for repentance our lord said woe to you horizon war to your websider our lord denounced the cities which in which most of his miracles had been performed because they did not repent as our lord began his ministry he also preached on repentance matthew 4 17 repent for the kingdom of heaven is near repent for the kingdom of heaven is near let us use this lantern tide my friends first to draw near to god and repent of our sins let us practice the spiritual disciplines of prayer spiritual reading fasting giving and repentance it sounds a lot i think i see jesus that we just focus just on one if it is prayer then prayer it is giving then on giving as well as on fasting perhaps we can focus on just one or two of the spiritual disciplines friends let us remember the significance of this spiritual discipline in our christian life as i've said it should be practiced not only during land but in the other days of the year that we should practice it especially during this decade of discipleship that we have we need to practice spiritual discipline land is not a time for just for fasting of course you like to think like that when land come yeah there is a fasting month but land is not just about fasting abstinence lands is also about giving about repentance which is more important than that repentance in cycloth and ashes was mentioned as i've said not only in the old testament but in the new testament as mentioned in matthew chapter 11 verse 21 the words from our lord himself but let's go to the i want us to look at the readings for today for tonight for this ash wednesday what do we learn from the readings what do we get from there first the old testament the book of joel chapter 2 book of joel chapter 2 verses 13 to 17 what is that all about are you able to follow joel chapter 2 verses 13 to 17 is a call to repentance is a call to repentance verse 13 joel chapter 2 run your heart not your garments return to the lord your god for he is gracious and compassionate slow to anger and abounding in love what's the meaning of ren r-e-n-d reign your hearts return to the lord message from the old testament this evening in the true fact the word wren is a very strong word split your heart according to the dictionary but what is important there is also verse 14 is not just reign our heart but who knows he may turn a pity and leave behind a blessing verse 14 who knows he may turn a pity and leave behind a blessing old testament reading is a call to repentance very appropriate because we begin our lantern observant today and it's a call to repentance the book of joel chapter two as i've said the word ren r e and d is a very strong word split your heart but we can look at it this way rend your heart meaning we can search ourselves search our hearts search our minds we can examine our spiritual relationship with god we can look at it that way search our heart search our minds it is friends a call to repentance what about the second reading second corinthians 5 20 is the need for us to be reconciled to god sin separate us from god the moment we sin we are separated from god but we know that jesus has died for us there is a need for reconciliation and that is the message from ii corinthians 5 20 the cross of christ brings reconciliation therefore we need to confess our sins and seek for forgiveness and then come reconciliation the message from the second reading is for us to turn back return to the lord that is the message the gospel this evening we have three very important message there the gospel this evening one is on giving giving to the needy we have the guidance there from the readings you can look at it yourself when we give to the needy what must we do and also talking about prayer the needs for us to emphasize on prayer and the needs for us to fast fasting that is on the go in the gospel for this evening it touches on the spiritual disciplines spiritual disciplines of prayer fasting and giving again connected to the meaning of land and the purpose of land for us friends when we practice these spiritual disciplines we are sure to be blessed according to the words from the old testament the epistle for today so we need to reflect on that how we should give how we should pray and how we should fast each day in the gospel once again remind us of the significance of the ashes because immediately after this we will receive the ashes what is it for just a few words you will remind us on the needs of one repentance the needs of two to be humble and number three of our own mortality let us begin our lenten observance with our heart full of repentance and humility and knowing that thus we are and unto thus shall we return it's only by the grace and mercy of god sisters and brothers in christ will be able to practice these spiritual disciplines to put this into practice we need the grace of god it is tough and therefore prayer bible reading etc of these spiritual disciplines is important or are important and therefore we need the grace of god the grace of god that we can receive through prayer through bible reading through our participations in the blessed sacrament we will receive the grace of god it is only by the grace of god that we will be able to have a very meaningful lantern absorbent this year i pray friends for god's grace to be upon us as we begin our lenten observant this year in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] dear sisters and brothers in christ let us enter into a time of
