I also have a PDF document with synonyms for 20 other adjectives which I'm not going to show you today and you can download it later okay. Ready? Let's get started. In IELTS Writing we often talk about rich and poor people so instead of saying rich you can see wealthy they mean the same thing you can also say well-off and well-off family or you can say better off people who are better off and these adjectives are often used in negative situations growths are available for less well-off families you can also say affluent of prosperous both are quite formal and you can say rich wealthy prosperous or affluent to talk about people or places but there are some patterns if you talk about a family you can say a rich wealthy prosperous affluent or well-off family you can use all of them if you talk about a particular person you you can say a rich will see prosperous well-off men or woman but you typically don't say an affluent person and if you're talking about a city or a country you can say a rich wealthy prosperous affluent country or city but not well-off as you know in English sound words I often use together while others aren't and these are collocations and if you know collocations you can get a higher goal another adjective you could use is money it's quite full and it means someone is rich and powerful of the moneyed class you can also use the word privileged it's not just rich it means that someone has special rights and special advantages that only a small number of people have a privileged background or upbringing and you can turn a couple of adjectives into nouns and say the rich or the well-off both are plural and you say average are here is an example everyday of the split between the rich and the poor widens what synonyms can you use to talk about the poor well you can say disadvantaged it means that someone has less money and fewer opportunities than most people in society a new educational program has been set up for economically disadvantaged children and it's nice cavitation economically disadvantaged you can also say they disadvantaged and use it as a noun it will be plural that the disadvantaged are these measures are intended to help the disadvantaged you can also say needy needy is mostly used to describe people as a group don't use it to talk about an individual person or about your own circumstances for example you can say needy children or needy families to talk about many children and many families but it would be weird to say he grew up in a needy family don't use it this way you can also say impoverished it's quite formal and it's often used to talk about countries you can also say deprived someone doesn't have enough food education and all the things that are necessary for people to live a comfortable life here are some patterns if you talk about people or families you can use all of them poor disadvantaged community impoverished or deprived similarly when you talk about areas you can use all of them too but it's very comin to hear about deprived areas when you talk about countries say poor disadvantaged or impoverished country basically you say a deprived area but an impoverished country ok and when you talk about someone's background you can say a poor disadvantaged impoverished or deprived background but not needy background and another synonym is underprivileged to describe someone rich you can see privileged to describe someone poor it is the underprivileged it means disadvantaged having less money and fewer opportunities than other people in society children from an underprivileged family background are statistically more likely to become involved in crime and I like this phrase and underprivileged family background the next adjective we are going to talk about is wrong and the synonym is incorrect it means not accurate or true incorrect information or incorrect spelling we can also say false it means wrong not correct or true and it's common to say a false argument a false assumption belief or impression a formal adjective would be erroneous it means not correct based on wrong information the theory is based on several erroneous beliefs or you can say that someone's opinion is based on an erroneous belief that another formal adjective is fallacious it means not correct a fallacious argument or this argument is based on fallacious reason and of course you can always say inaccurate how can you talk about cheap and expensive things oh when you want to say that something is cheap you can say inexpensive it sounds quite formal and there is a little difference when you say inexpensive you mean the price is quite low but the quality is still good so it's positive and when you say cheap you often mean that it's low priced but also of poor quality you can also say affordable it means most people can afford it and let's have a look at some collocations when you're talking about prices say cheap affordable or reasonable prices face or race and if you're talking about products or services say cheap affordable inexpensive the product is inexpensive and the prices are reasonable you can also say low priced there are no current plans to introduce free or low price travel generally when you're describing something expensive you can use a couple of synonyms and there were expensive can have a positive meaning that something is expensive and it's good or a negative meaning that it's expensive it's too expensive so when you mean it's too expensive you can say costly it's formal and it means costing a lot of money too expensive the failure to react will prove costly it can also say overpriced it also means too expensive due to overpriced housing many young people cannot afford to buy a property the next common adjective is enough to replace it we can say sufficient there is no sufficient evidence to claim that whatever you can also say adequate without the adequate provision of child care many women who wish to work are unable to do so the next word is helpful I think it's overused in ours essays you can say beneficial it would be a formal way to say helpful work experience is usually highly beneficial for students you can also say that something is valuable instead of saying that the Internet is helpful or useful you can say the Internet can be a valuable learning tool and the next word is advantageous it means good or useful in a particular situation this plan could be advantageous for people on low incomes okay that's enough for today learn new words but more importantly learn allocations and phrases they will really help you increase your score and don't forget to download the PDF with synonyms 420 all the adjectives we haven't talked about today I'm gonna link it on
