hi guys it's us here and today I've prepared for you 30 words which you must avoid in IELTS writing why did I do that because I see these words used all the time but they're just too informal for IELTS and if you want to achieve a high score you should stick to a more formal style or unless you're writing a letter to a friend in general writing task 1 in all other situations stick to for most I'll and avoid these words let's get started and the first one is in the nutshell many people use it to open their conclusion but this what is very informal imagine friends asking you about a difficult situation and you can say well in a nutshell and then one sentence to summarize the situation but in IELTS don't be original just say in conclusion or to conclude the next one is a couple of a couple of countries no say several countries also avoid saying kind of sort of the findings were kind of significant now say the findings was somewhat significant or the findings were significant to some degree the next one is lots of or a lot of I use it all the time when I speak but you should avoid it in IELTS writing say many or much instead of saying lots of kids say many children yes and avoid the word kids say children the next one is you and you're avoided in the formal arts writing for example instead of saying you can clearly see the results say one can clearly see the results or the results can clearly be seen that's a passive voice and must for IELTS writing the next group of words to avoid is everyday abbreviations instead of saying F phone say a telephone of water a photograph a fridge a refrigerator in for information uni University a cop a policeman or a policewoman and ASAP write it in full as soon as possible when you're writing a list of things avoid words such as so on or etc at the end of your list for example public transport in London includes tube buses trains and so on no say public transport in London includes tube buses and trains what about idioms in IELTS writing you should avoid them too idioms are informal you may use idioms in out speaking but I would be very careful because you should only use an idiom when you are absolutely sure that that's a good place to put it otherwise it just sounds so unnatural but that's for IELTS speaking in now it's writing avoid idioms or colloquial expressions if you don't know what it means don't worry concentrate on examples the first one is at the end of the day for instance at the end of the day children should go to school rather than be taught at home that's a conclusion but at the end of the day is informal don't try to be original it's okay to say in conclusion or to conclude the next one is to get out of hand and let your wide so popular but I often see it in essays it means to be no longer in control but don't use it the next one is once in a blue moon it means very rarely or hardly ever he comes once in a blue moon but that's not for ads writing and the last one is since the dawn of time I've seen people using it to open the introduct on a number of occasions but it never looks right to a native speaker so don't use it some words in English are just very simple and if your level of English is advanced and you are aiming to get been 7 or higher United's writing then try to avoid words which are very simple if you only need to achieve band 5 or 6 in writing don't worry about it okay simple words for advanced English speakers the first one is to get say to obtain or to receive to get a job offer say to receive a job offer to get a university degree to receive a university degree next to give this chapter gives an overview say the chapter presents or provides and overview so and very it's so important say it's extremely important or just it's important if you want to learn more about that and also how you can improve your writing skills immediately watch the video which I'm going to link in the corner so to show that's actually the verb used by IELTS but you can use more interesting verbs such as to illustrate to demonstrate to reveal bad a bad result say it pours out a negative result big a big sample say a large or a sizable sample recently I made a list of synonyms for 20 most common adjectives used in IELTS writing task 2 and if you want to download it the link will be in the description box below be careful with phrasal verbs again this piece of advice is for people with advanced level of English the truth they is most phrasal verbs are quite informal you may not feel it straightaway but let me show you an example a couple a couple of researchers found out a new way of clarifying water can you imagine that in a science magazine probably not several researchers discovered a new way of clarifying water so the verb to discover sounds more formal than to find out another example to think about or to consider as the government should think about a new policy now the government should consider a new policy it sounds better it sounds like what you would hear on the news right another pair is to look at to examine or to point out to indicate there are many many prayers like that and if you know a verb which can replace a phrasal verb do it okay that was a list of 30 words to avoid and outs writing there are many more of them just try to avoid all informal words in ads writing especially in IELTS academic writing and if you
