the city's been dark since the sunset I'm not sure if the dawn will ever come some people say that I'm a hero but I don't even know what that means anymore get back already [Music] hello sir where's the s-class yeah there's never been an s-class it's the g90 it's the new one you know that where's Alfred Alfred is away it's just me today okay yep I've got him oh he's Batman today where is she you're watching throttle house I'm Thomas and I'm James and today we want to see if the New Genesis g90 can take on the S Class because in the land of limos many believe that the S Class is king or at least at this price point and this s 560 doesn't mess around it puts out 463 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque that's the same torque figure as a mclaren 675lt granted this is a little heavier and a little less aerodynamic but it's also packed with luxury as it should be because in today's spec with almost all the bells and whistles it'll run you a hundred and forty five thousand dollars Canadian and that requires a big thank you to mercedes-benz of Oakville for foolishly trusting us to return it in one piece thanks guys or for under ninety thousand dollars you can get all the bells and whistles in this brand new g 90 this car is the very definition of an underdog coming out of korea the g 90 is here to try to hang out with the big kids no it doesn't have pedigree yes the front end looks like swarovski got a hold of Superman's crest but all the goodies are there on the inside the real question of the day is does the g 90 actually have the engineering end presence to roll with the giants or is it just a bit of a knockoff if you're new to throttle house we do car reviews track tests and quite a lot of messing around so subscribe and hit the bell the Mercedes s-class this car is all about one thing comfort and I'm feeling like a boss so two things but you it really does feel special the rules don't seem like they apply to me in this car stop signs don't matter this this must be held cyclists in Toronto Phil this is the genisis g90 it's awesome all about one thing doing exactly what those cars do but for cheaper there is without question a significant amount of sophistication to the way that this vehicle drives and that's due in part to the engine isn't it if you do want to save a few bucks you can order the g90 with a turbo charge to be six but you're better off with the v8 this is a naturally aspirated v8 with aluminum block and heads and variable valve timing that makes 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque now James's car has a twin-turbo v8 but it's only like 40 more horsepower so that's like 20 horsepower per turbo now the car is very naturally aspirated you do have to run it all the way out to get that power but one thing that I definitely notice is that the throttle is intentionally tuned so that the first half of it is very long which means that you can do whole foot motions and it doesn't create any unwanted response from the engine I would say that overall most importantly this cars power is completely but if you're not satisfied with adequate and you shouldn't be then step over to the Mercedes side of things because while this s 560 only has 43 more horsepower it actually has a hundred and thirty-three pound-feet more of torque that's incredibly significant if it's not enough for you then you can get an S 63 of which this is the detuned motor and if that's not enough for you you can get an S 65 which is a v12 but what's significant about this is that it's a hot V that means that the turbos sit inside the V of the engine which puts them closer to where the explosions are and that means the torque is available to me now and the way the car delivers the power is so buttery smooth it feels like you're inside of a red velvet cupcake assuming that there's cream cheese in it and I know these cars aren't all about speed but this cart cutting fast I put my foot down and he hit snort 100 kilometers an hour in four and a half seconds this weighs four and a half thousand pounds that is a lot of power and speed for a car that still has two trims of car above it we might not know a whole lot about this car in Canada or in the United States but in Korea this is what presidents and CEOs drive but I can tell you here what it feels like to me is an incredibly insulated and isolated place it's it's like a safe space and that's a good thing I need one of those from Millennial and actually sounds pretty cool okay there is a sport mode you don't really need it it's more like a comfort mode and then also comfort mode there's a custom mode too which is pretty cool basically this car is not about driving around the back roads and carving corners it's about long-distance cruising it has that better than anything going down the highway using the adaptive cruise control a lane keep assist which is really good by the way I was so isolated from everything that was going on around me that I actually looked up and I was in a different city than I thought it was in it erased the drive from my memory it was incredibly relaxing now I don't need to tell you as an s-class there is almost no NVH earnest that's noise vibrations harshness it is a smooth sailing quiet ride there's a little bit of tiny noise and there's a bit of wind noise but it's not a Rolls Royce you really have to jump up to Bentley Rolls Royce to get the next level for that and for that reason I'm very curious about how the genesis is doing as the underdog but like the a8 and the 7 Series we drove recently go see that video if you haven't already this does drive the size that it is it feels a bit like a boat there's lean in the corners nothing's too urgent about it but what that allows for it to soak up small driver errors or small imperfections in the road you get to feel like a chauffeur if you were to hit and move your passenger would say oh my guys and mouse but if you hit a chicken you'd be like what was that it's it's fine in the corners but beyond that it doesn't do anything fantastical or amazing deals with its mass very well and it's really well damped there's no unnecessary motions or sounds or anything delivered to the driver of the passengers it's easy to control the steering is light but it's direct its accurate I feel very aware of where the car is pointing it I'm not just eyeballing the turns it also has driving modes you're probably not going to find yourself in sport that often everything this car does is in the interest of comfort it even has an air suspension button which raises the car if you want to go over a steep speed bump or some snow it also has the active bolstering that is if I do a harsh left turn like this it gives me the right bolster immediately so that it keeps me upright and vertical and comfortable it's not a gimmick it's actually one of my favorite features in cars and the s-class has pioneered it for a long time honestly this car is a win for Genesis transmission stays completely out of your way the seats are really comfortable it's got all the safety and overhead camera and 360 blind spot thing you could ever need and it's all included in the price in fact there's nothing that this does worse than the 7 Series or the a8 that we drove before the only thing left for me to do is to drive that s-class but first we have to talk about the styling I love these long limo days I feel soothed by them no relaxing okay that's class tell me about it okay so no much has changed this has the mg package which is like six thousand dollars it's a lot of money yeah you get the sport breakout 20-inch wheels and you get some more aggressive styling down here I wonder if that's where I'd save some money okay there's a lot of badges there's also a Cadillac badge that is not a Cadillac badge is the technology you have the same time very well integrated mine isn't really either to be fair but anyway this is class it's it's well done it always has looked good period yeah it's very sharp I'm more interested in this yes because this is the new kid on the block here though this has got the this cross-hatching theme this shape when you're following behind me the road presence of this is insane yeah yeah exactly and if you're behind me be able to see that this is the shape of the exhaust tips actually this like the entire grille yeah it's really cool anyway so this cross hatching goes all the way along here in this headlight it's over here and it kind of is present in these wheels which are the coolest wheels I think I have ever seen another car we actually did a poll on Instagram to see which ones you guys prefer and you chose the Mercedes agree with that but honestly I really think this is a good looking car it reminds me it's got like an Aston Martin Lagonda vibe going on I've heard that before and I don't agree you know what it kind of reminds me of is a Toyota sentry we don't get that here but this looks like a Toyota sentry to me I know I see that we do the interiors though let's start with the s-class okay it's nice welcome to s-class luxury and slightly old man wouldn't you don't have the option okay good yes so we have a bunch of stuff in here in fact in the Premium Package you have heated and cooled seats you got the leather upholstery yes 360 camera safety staff that's quite a big package well if you're a scarce I know you want that's what you want to have but there's also the nice headliner and this exclusive nappa upholstery is that from the same package as before no that is part of the exclusive package and that costs more that's like another 5 grand yeah ok anyway this is obviously very lovely I've noticed this though we've have some characteristic Mercedes Creeky it's not nearly as bad as no not nearly as bad I'll show you something in a minute when we get of that incredibly comfortable these get contoured seats we have the thermos the sound system which is good but for six thousand dollars more you get the high end it says thermistor high end and there's like tweeters that spin out you physical things twenty-something speakers amazing okay obviously what the dual screens this looks like every other Mercedes there yeah the tech does yeah but well this is the steering wheel it's is unique to an s-class but like in the 7 Series that we were just in it has the same 7 the same wheel that's in the 3 series which might not be the case in Europe yeah by the way this is unique in this this looks really nice I've really really liked the look of this interior the ambient lighting is very cool alright sure you check out the back seats we have two of course what is that that is the extending belt buckle yeah so luxurious everything about it is that an optional extra dough yep okay so this is in a long wheelbase James no this is the short wheelbase yeah how much more is the long wheelbase to match the G 90 from the base prices nine thousand Canadian I I was just trying to bring the prices a little bit closer to the Genesis this is still really comfortable but you would have some extra space in the long wheelbase oh man yeah this is gobby's we have one of these for sure we have wireless charging back here that's cool this passes you this in person that's too much everyday the press button I don't want to extend from peasants you yeah do we ought to go lift yeah well I'll say hey Siri passing my scotch yeah exactly this is amazing by the way I love this yes thank you with the light it's really really nice in here really really nice yeah incredibly comfortable it is however how much does this car cost its cost a hundred you don't want to say it out loud do you I said it no I'm ki say it louder 445,000 do native yeah would you like to see what under $100,000 of g9 he gets you sure soft close off close which is standard as is everything that you see really the 89 yeah damn well I don't know what I'm seeing it you might not have any of the stuff and I have all this is a cool tip you didn't call it seeds isn't cool yes leather trim dashboard nappa leather yes open pour wood yes you know what though it's very brown in here all right I feel like that side of a tree no there's a different Brown here to here to here to here all the Browns match the coffin Joe okay but you get was in a cream color [Music] anyway the biggest thing for me in here to the build quality is supremely good is rock-solid everything there's no defense in the Mercedes though we did decide that the wood creaks because it was from a creaky meadow that's great yes this must not be a creaky meadow yeah no however one thing I really do like the design of this however it's taken some styling cues from I don't know say the car sitting beside us like this piping with a stitch that goes onto the door right there it is they they did a great job this is the really nice it is a touch even if it's not far away yeah it as matter because you can use this thing down here and it works perfectly that looks dated I agree with you they could have done something more for their this is supposed to be the call that suggests the new Jenna Jenna Jenna here with your marketing there's a fancy clock is it what it's in the Mercedes you can get an iwi awesome you can't do that in this where me focus a clock alright know it well any Logan rock walk is not a clock sometimes clocks can be cooler because they're made by really fancy companies and Genesis should do a partnership of some kind anyway everything in here works perfectly except for the charging it's slow it doesn't charge my phone yeah it's so slow there's wireless charging yeah but you're using a VW charger it's just rejecting the brand no it's just the wrong bug to think so yeah anyway oh yes yeah you have to open this manually okay the back seat takes care of you should mean oh yeah okay high seating position just like the 7 Series really really remind the whole interior reminds me of the 7 Series this is genuinely as good as a BMW 7 Series in terms of material qualities feels very nice we got the old we go the climate control heeds in a cooled seats yep you didn't call see also you are in the president's chair of course Alan just wherever I sit you automatically becomes either hold that button down right there all right well the front seats moving yeah you tell the president said that just makes things bounty oh oh hey all right I mean this - I shall join you so join your contract because you know in the president's chair that I feel it's still pretty cool okay that's pretty comfortable right yeah I know for might be able to move the seat in front of me it makes you feel like less of a child passenger yes like I have control you can move the seat in two ways you can actually fully control it here or you can just reach up on the side of the thing and push the buttons and it moves it I mean other otherwise there isn't anything amazing in here there's no televisions in this no well that one that one you have two options you cannot you can also option televisions in this you can that's the only optional extra and man any mirrors right got the whole thing these are stitched exactly like the s-class now concluding thoughts about this that I have I want to say that while this is absolutely fantastic it does just feel like a reverse engineered version of that car yep well that's that's the problem with the Genesis stuff is it there's a generic vibe to it it's slightly missing identity but they but it's way cheaper way still feels as good quality pretty much no it is well liked these are the same types of materials so here's what Genesis needs to do basically they need to take one of their cars build it and enter a race and win no they need to be in a movie John wick needs to be driving whatever the new Genesis cube that's for that would work - like Dustin Hoffman's call stick John wick in it and build the identity because right now well this is unbelievably nice yeah it just does feel like a kind of a copy of that well yeah we said that about the G 70 as well yeah good as it was yes it would feel like a copycat do you wanna drive this I would love to drive this just got away with it James didn't realize that the g90 doesn't have massaging seats g90 Thomas didn't quite catch that the Mercedes didn't have the head-up display which this does you can get it in the Mercedes but it's another optional extra all right the s-class the benchmark we've now driven every single of these large boats that you can get and this one is heralded as the best you know what getting out of the g90 and into this okay yeah it's better it's a little bit better it's definitely faster but overall in terms of ride noise and how smooth it is it's not really that much different all right immediately the power feels very naturally aspirated and you can feel the lower torque this steering wheel feels nice that I'm not sure the wood wants for me I'm very impressed with the interior of this honestly as much as I rip it for not being the s-class and the way it drives is it's great Thomas is right this isn't any louder than the s-class which is a huge thing it's no mystery that that g9z drives very much exactly like this in most respects that's probably by design now when it comes to which one of these you might actually buy most of us if I'm actually going to buy these but which one of these makes more sense I don't know personally I think the gene ID as long as you can get over the fact that it's not a Mercedes why would you not save a huge amount of money every time we've got into Genesis we've said if you can get over the brand snobbery this is a great and that is no less true for the g90 is the S Class still king yes probably be you're paying a king's price but again Genesis does feel like it is lacking some identity and that's something that I hope that will change over time but as of right now if you want something like this for the sake of opulence and showing off the Mercedes is the clear answer if you want something like this because you just genuinely want to be comfortable the g90 is the their answer which one of these would I take if I had to buy one probably the G 90 and because they've really on that many of these in North America if you got one you'd be driving one of the most unique vehicles on the road and it would have these wheels which are so good out of the four the a8 the seven series this and the s-class but I think the a8 was one of my favorites just because of how high-tech it was inside I'm not loyal to any particular brand and considering money as a factor I would take the t90 if money wasn't there 63 we love these big comfy limos and there are still a few that we want to try like the Lincoln Continental coach door edition but having driven most of the sub $200,000 luxury boats the g90 stands up tall and stares the rest in the face it's impressive it's wonderful and the price well that's just unmatched isn't it thanks
