2020 Audi S8 vs BMW M760i // S-Class Killers

yours is bigger you know I know I just I think it's just something to do with the shape of yours it's not it's a bit weird well I mean like it was it was designed that way no I know I know and you know I think it's I think it's the way this is trimmed there's something more subtle about it yeah but who needs subtle these are big executive performance sedans [Music] you're watching far less I'm Thomas and I'm James and this is the new Audi s8 the pinnacle of Audi sedan lineup and we're comparing it to the BMW M 760i which is the Big Daddy of the BMW lineup the Battle of the German limos is a rivalry told throughout time this year the s8 is outies newest champion against the s-class and 7-series horde it's a lavish combination of technology and performance all wrapped up in an understated package this s8 which has been kindly provided by the lovely folks at POW de Valencia here in California has a v8 and two turbos under the hood and at a hundred and twenty nine thousand dollars USD and a hundred and fifty one thousand Canadian dollars starting price it's the underdog today but it's got some modern tricks of its sleeve not least of which is its predictive active suspension that can raise or lower each wheel independently to react to the road surface tech like that is what will make its serious trouble for that 7 series I'm sorry I can't hear you over the sound of a v12 yes the 7 Series flagship packs a turbocharged 12 cylinder punch and like the Audi sends his power through all four wheels and steers them all - and while the Audi might have a very advanced and fancy new suspension design this 7 Series can also read the road ahead and adjust its suspension accordingly flagships don't come cheap and the m7 60i starts a hundred and fifty seven thousand dollars us nicely optioned it can run you up to an eye-watering 180,000 like this one after living with both we took them to the canyons to stretch their legs and discuss if you're new to total house we do car reviews test and quite a lot of messages out so subscribe hit the bell all right back in the Audi s8 I'm excited for this Oh ever since we drove the a8 and it felt new you know we were just waiting for that Sh yeah-eah felt like it needed a little bit more power but after driving this I'm realizing that I don't need as much power as this as because this has a twin turbo v8 pushing out 563 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque these cars are so fast they don't need to be this fast James yeah I mean am i dying for them in the same group because the 7 Series it's fall stuff but this isn't about speed it's actually it's kind of like being on a beach and what I mean by that is that it's all about isolation right there is the Pacific Ocean and right there is the Pacific Coast Highway but because of the rolling smoothness of the waves I can't hear it and that's what the Audi s8 does for you but it just seems that like no matter what no matter where you are on the beach or on the road there's always an idiot behind you but whether there's an idiot behind you or an idiot in the driver's seat which there might be the Audi takes care of you especially with things like the transmission are you aware of the cars shifting gears right now you know it's very smooth even when you're approached stop signs and stoplights normally that transmission punishes you as it makes it seem like you're breaking bad you get a little downshift yeah this is it might as well be an Eevee the only thing telling me that's not a TV is that when I click it over into dynamic mode the exhaust opens up and I get this lovely oh and it becomes bs it becomes somehow a sports car it has active rear-wheel steering so it steers the the rear wheels the opposite direction in tight corners in the same direction in fast corners and it makes what is a very long car actually one inch longer than the seventh one and a half one and a half inches longer it makes it feel like an rs3 no runway the way you're carving these corners this is ridiculous I don't get me wrong I feel sick but I'm not worried I know it's not being boat like yeah that's because the suspension is incredible in this on the road first of all it's somehow WAAFs like a Rolls Royce the 760 and we'll recheck in a minute but it doesn't have quite this level of smooth motion wafting that's why you're feeling sick I don't know it's very comfortable don't give it the rolls-royce reputation no you're right okay neither reserve its true the architecture of luxury the architecture of luxury after being in a Rolls yes these are amazing but the rolls is on a different level it needs to be said yeah however this is really impressive actually the coolest part about the suspension is not the road it's a trick that it does when it's standing still actually I have to show you that right now okay okay what is it open that door am I gonna get an electric shock no just open that door no and you may step inside comfortably cool but honestly the fancy tricks were getting in and out aside this is a truly truly impressive vehicle howdy has mastered its a big long sedan it should be though it's forty five thousand dollars more than an a8 that's a lot of money that's the loss of money the Indian is it's worth it if you think you need the power I'm not sure you do but it's certainly nice to have it because there's a there's definitely an effortlessness to this car all right well that's let's go see what happens when you spend a little bit more money the 760i xDrive em the 767 there is no m7 and there is no RSA RSA know there is an Alpina though there is an Alpina b7 but the Alpina b7 actually has more performance than this it's about being the best fair yeah this has already yeah yeah the north of 60 in this BMW plane is 3.6 seconds that is hilarious that's hilarious for a false luxury sedan yeah thing weighs 5 5150 pounds this is actually lighter than the Audi and that's in it despite the extra four-cylinder work yeah there's war it's all coming up the hill everything about this v12 is effortless and it has less weight to carry because it has a carbon core yeah you can see the carbon core on the door it has a little thing so it's not as fat and it's just because it is all sports car in the canyons it's just crazy will never drive it like this you'll never need to you know it's nice to know that it can yeah throw it into sport mode and it just becomes you know I want to say a slightly bigger ride but then chuck it into comfort and it's just like if I oh I can hear the exhaust chill out yeah you could even say that you're like you're on a beach you're on a beach anyway the sport mode is nuts well just the capability of the car I was in a Lamborghini recently a very fast Lamborghini and I was carving these canyons and I look in my rearview mirror and somehow you were keeping up with me and it was frightening well you know what don't give me I'm such a good driver line this is an incredibly incredibly competent vehicle both these cars make life so easy you get to you get to feel like a pro especially in comfort mode like this is slow to come on to the power and comfort mode yes but that's intentional it's intentional and with the levels of torque that it has 627 pound-feet of torque right that's a lot that's all of them that's all of the things all the torques any Hill you know we've been staying in the hills California beautiful state well done everyone that lives here yeah and it goes up those hills and I'm quarter throttle yet quarter throttle and it's just coasting up the hills cosa it's unbelievable how's the steering though I didn't initially like the steering you know around town this it's very very light in comfort and it's actually not that much heavier in sport it's it's vague but in the key they big they big arcing vague vague VA shut up Canadian action so the yeah the serie is not that heavy but around the canyons somehow I don't I can't explain it translates to confidence in like it weights are well yet the based on how fast you're driving because it's exactly the speed limit the chassis is just so dialed in absolutely the the confidence in the corners oh how quickly we just got this - there's been a 45 mm hour right you got up to it quickly and from a passenger perspective this is soap well that's not comfortable that's fast that is off not v12 unbelievable it's not necessary but Wow is it cool all right no I'm not letting you out I did that with the rolls-royce and I still regret it to this day Helen join us fine there we go all right it might look like a rolls-royce in the king color in color yeah it's very similar red of the room this is the aventurine red it's quite regal venturing a venturing okay yeah it's Bilbo Baggins favorite color so the grill is still afore so sight it's grown on me but it's also grown on the car like algae so it's gonna wipe it off it's a shame because I think the car has really great lines everywhere just it's pretty looking no it's lovely this line all the way down the side perfect it's just that it's just that front grille it's just the grille it almost ruins look at the car but it doesn't but it does make a statement this does not make a statement as much no it's still got that understated things very understand even though it's the s8 yes even though it's ESA it does have the black optics package and has the LED lights and oh it actually has some 20 inch wheels and red brake callipers which I think look really really cool that's also good they give it the the S this gives a way that it's a sleeper a little bit a little bit but no one's gonna know you put up to a light in this against like an m2 competition yes right guys gonna think you could smoke you this war smoke and it took up literally after life but it just looks like a big rowdy a six it does actually just like a big Audi a4 to be honest and a huge Lda 3 we could go all day this is like a moon blue it's not blue it is not whatever it's black or grey as near as makes no difference I can see a blue tint sure there's a blue tint but like why not make it like a like a rich colour like a royal blue this is a really good red well you can spec it the way you want this is again it's gone full understated it almost murdered out in this this little bit yeah speaking of murdered out the interior as you saw is very dark but it works I think it's fantastic let's go look Thomas you're learn soft clothes every times when you grow up in the boondocks you're not ready the boondocks I said yeah a hundred thousand people it's not like London London that's the boat all right so it's wonderful in the back it is also lovely in the front this feels more like the future to me than that and then with the screams I would say that yes okay so the screens are obviously incredible and they have haptic feedback and they're lovely to look at like the black levels are incredible this is like an iPhone you just hold this stuff down yeah and you can move the apps it's incredible I mean it has everything its fingerprints it's gonna get to that yeah it's uh you just did a big one there I can't even see the word radio anymore greasy little fingers you had some it's a chicken for lunch why they did it so I don't mind a little let's be honest tears of the use of the hands here now this aside from the piano black I think is one of the prettiest mix of materials I've ever seen like look at the door for example you've got carbon fiber you've got the the piano black you've got the satin silver you've got the Alcantara and then you have the regular smooth napa leather and it blends together in the most brilliant way I think it's lovely and solid we have wireless call play supplier that's carplay now an admittance peak banging Olufsen sound system yeah which might as well not be a sound system might as well be a band that you've hired to travel with you so it's brilliant it's unbelievable bunch of carbon fiber area of course there is yeah I convinced that close when you turn on the aircon that goes down there reveal more carbon fibre I even like the shifter the carbon fibre it works really really well well this this Audi shifter designed that look the low flat why I think is really nice on the side from the piano black this whole area is very pretty in the steering wheel it's really really really good-looking the full spokes 4 spokes 1 spoke to spoke three spoke forth look yeah I think it's pretty much perfect for a car like I love it there's a sense of occasion about it virtual cockpit beautiful it is however I have noticed and I can't seem to to spec the cockpit with the two circle dials in the map in the middle I could be an idiot that's possible but I can't seem to figure that all I get is this obtuse angled tack in the speed in the center but when you have the map that's so nice and clear it is and I do like it better than BMWs Virgil what about these front seats very comfortable and very adjustable not crazily bolstered though I think they shouldn't be they did the right thing by not over bolstering them I knew it's the S but it's still a big luxury boat yeah I guess they'll say that's the RS is yes well this won't get an RS it's probably won't get an S Plus maybe maybe an S Plus the last gen yeah also these I know you like these yeah there's a loss of control there's a lot of control of you know and the wireless charger yep let's take a closer look at the back seat and you can show me what you can get okay not bad buck of the s8 all right very comfortable very spacious it is yes I got that full center console well it does this one doesn't have the full executive rear seat package okay okay so you can get it obviously it would cost more but it gives you this cool like center spar control area here it gives you the two screens that you would see just like in the 7 Series but most importantly it gives you a footrest okay right but this footrest is a heated massaging footrest no yes but - calm down ow d that's weird for the Germans to come using something so relaxed and chilled yes massage and heat your feet at the same time I think that I'm against the cooler oh then you can have champagne that's unnecessary and it takes up trunk space I don't even drink champagne you don't like anything that has bubbles in it this is afraid of bubbles bubbles no one is afraid of fun let's go talk about the cemetery's yeah okay soft clothes what must your wife felt you don't listen I don't I can't learn I've done the seven series before yes I'm not different we do have a nice centerpiece there yeah I love that it's sunny in there so the view will abide so nice that's why I spent tens of thousands more than the it is wonderful in here this is this feels like a lounge the way they suspect with the piano black and the white leather which by the way is called smoke white smoke white the other option is black lung that might not be true but the way it's set up is if kept clean this is beautiful yeah if kept clean I mean well the white was there's white carpets for God's sake that's probably a mistake the first time we got in this car we eat the first time in you ruined it done like at least the rolls-royce were and even though I had white interior I had black black mat made of Lambs lambs blend yeah everything else is all BMW we have I Drive we have the your favorite gauge cluster ever the M sports doing will and like the Audi the material qualities in here everything is solid it's very quilted there that the quilted leather on the seats with the Navajo thing no your little braid that you like I will say that my samurai dim right I used to sweep the dojo so this I would say is if the Audi interior in terms of like design is a 10 this is a 9.5 this feels a little bit older it does feel right if that's all screens that's all futuristic yep I know this is more traditional back there there's stuff you when you're getting to the Audi you fly there's a bunch you have to learn about it yeah you haven't got massaging see you I don't know massaging seats no but the seat behind you the president CES pushes your seat all the way forward thanks for that take okay I understand that also you're not important I guess right the important people say well we're about to go check out the back seat and I'm gonna get the presidency all right let's do I'm impressed I did it you did it I did do it yeah wow it is beautiful in here the white makes it it does so if you keep it co op you'll n't you have to keep it clean though you can't keep it clean but you can try and it might be worth it the seating position is high but that's good though because then you kind of have this like high up view of the world I really do like it I really do it is that with the window with the sunroof so printer and everything down I mean obviously you've got the privacy stuff yes of course there we go one thing if I was going to nitpick quality I did find that the Audi when they put their sunshade down which it also does have a little flap closes over hmm this just leaves a space that's all can't buy this car you can go really check this out that's a table this is the sturdiest table better than any airline better than anything I've ever been in a car this is super super German yes it is super German it's not the no massaging heated foot rests in here not nine although you are in the president's chair which means you can push with one button with will touch of one button that whole chair goes oh that's right yeah I can push this in the whole thing and then it's a foot raise a footrest widget is a heat massage it doesn't get massage you and it is also white so it's disgusting you must take your shoes off when you get in the car but you get to do what you want because you're in the back of your 7 Series I guess it's true especially for taking this chair this has the cushions yeah for long pillows yeah unfortunately for you there is no fridge now cool cooler little area cool clip that's a nice cool clip um there's screens so yeah so these are on right now you can control the ambient lighting with these screens right yes and you've got the top and you control am dealing with these does all the same stuff this occasionally doesn't work in other 7 Series as we've had sometimes it does a reboot and then it won't turn on this is working right now it is currently working yes this is very BMW you know if it's too predictable it's boring yes the ambient lighting is all the different colors and at night from back here this is a really cool place to be sleeping in and molten multiple cinema yeah it's really neat I've got massaging back seats here this is a really optioned out car this has like this has like twenty five thousand dollars of options so it's form what you know you can option the Audi up higher yeah but this has got a bunch of stuff that says most of the stuff I'm gonna put this away now I think that when it comes to the back seats of these cars between these physical two cars here this one obviously has a beat do you think so yeah was it hasn't the more it has more stuff you can get all the stuff with that Audi obviously yeah but I think in terms of the seating position and the pillow and the whole thing I think a screens aside tack aside I think I like the rear of the 7 Series better I think you'll being sold on the white I'm trying not to be I'm trying not to be I just think I like this episode it's so bright and wonderful but I like the front seat of the Audi better so what do is cut them in half just like a heart this is what everyone else would say it's an s-class which is the option maybe is the answer so yes the s-class poses an interesting question and I guess we'll have to drive the s63 soon to find out the answer we realize that sometimes we drive expensive cars and they don't make much sense it requires an emotional purchase rather than a logical 1g class but these vehicles have a blended cocktail of performance technology and luxury that is unmatched below the six-figure mark that said after spending time in both the s8 with its futuristic interior - the fingerprints just presented a feeling of modern luxury that I couldn't deny so it's the one that I crowned the winner and it doesn't hurt that you get to save thousands upon thousands of dollars in you James ah this is tough for me the m7 60i wins the day its massive power road presence and yes Marlee contradicted but bold styling achieves flagship status better than the s8 does but if it was my money considering that you really aren't going to be Canyon carving in your 5,000 pound executive sedan a fully loaded a8 would suit me just perfectly and it still has the ability to make you feel like you're on a beach like you're on a beach come on like you're on a beach yes yes it would yes finally Thomas Thomas Thomas mummy

All these S-Class Killers and yet the S-Class remains the best selling by a decent margin despite being the oldest. It will be interesting to see if the new W223 generation that comes out this year will boost the sales. It has some major brand prestige.

Let me put it in context. The current 5 series is only 1" shorter than the beloved SWB 740i.... which was not a small car to begin with.
